"If that's the case, despite all that's been between us, he saved the world from Chipotle's. He should've known I'd share my garlic knots if he'd asked."
50:33 This is why I've always loved Team Dark and how it relates to Shadow's character. It feels like the found family that Shadow needed since losing his original family is such a tragic way. The tear falling back to Rouge as Shadow runs forward after his final moments with Maria and Gerald almost feels reassuring, like even if he has to move forth without the loved ones he grew up with, it doesn't mean he'll have to be alone forever. It was so great to see Shadow, Rouge, and Omega working together in Dark Beginnings and having such a fun dynamic, as well as the White Space dialogue with Rouge and Omega having even more nods to the group's relationship and how much this unlikely team of miscreants actually do care about each other.
I love the logic Maria used when naming Shadow as it gives an entire second meaning to Shadow’s dialogue at the end of the final boss. Shadow says “I am Shadow The Hedgehog. This is the destiny I choose.” Not only does this work as Shadow solidifying the fact that he is not merely an extension of Black Doom, but in the scene he is glowing with light, just as Maria said, a shadow can lead you to the light. When he says “I am Shadow” it’s almost like he is reaffirming that The destiny he chooses is to be the person Maria believed he could be. At least that’s my interpretation
I want to commend the writers of Shadow Generations and Dark Beginnings for the kindness in handling Shadow’s trauma. I am not very familiar with the sonic franchise, but since watching sonic 3 I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of UA-cam videos about many of the games, where I learned about Shadow Gen and the prequel animation that you wrote. It’s a small thing, but I often see action-oriented media treat the inability to move on as a moral failing rather than a barrier some people struggle with more than others. I hope this isn’t TMI but one of the most infuriating things about PTSD is that you can open up and talk about a past memory a hundred times, and still end up fixated on it the next day. It’s exhausting for the people around you, so I really appreciate that both pieces of media you wrote were so patient with a character like Shadow. Neither the storyline nor characters punish him for how the past affects him (whether fixating on it or ignoring it), and instead encourages him forward without ever enabling him. I think that’s why this character has stood out to me despite being way older than the target audience and not having grown up with the games. Thanks to you both adding so many more layers to this campy little hedgehog!
36:31 I KNEW it!! I decided to pay attention to the phrasing of Shadow Generations while I was playing and I was starting to notice some phrases here and there in the Mephiles fight that made me feel like Ian hadn't written that part. But then he was the only one credited for the script so I thought I was just going insane lmao Thank you to Kai for sponsoring this episode!! I love hearing behind the scenes stuff like this and I'm glad a whole episode was dedicated to it. And thank you to Ian and Kyle! Ian's enthusiasm about his contributions made this episode even more of a treat
9:47 Thank you so much for saying all that, I almost cried. As someone with a loved one with chronic illness, it means so much to hear that you researched and thought so much about the experiences of Maria because of her disabilities. Seeing someone who goes through such pain every day, and yet still fights so hard to carve out a piece of happiness and demonstrates love towards others and the world, despite everything... I *do* often feel extremely humbled by having them in my life, and they do feel like a light to me. Witnessing and loving people like that stays with you forever, and it makes you feel angry on their behalf, but so blessed to know them regardless.
What Ian didn't mention is that he also has very personal experience with being the caretaker for someone who lives with chronic illness everyday. He not only researched it, it affects him (and the person very close to him that he cares for) firsthand. His desire to portray it as he did with Maria stems from that. -Kyle
@BumbleKingVideos That makes a lot of sense, thank you for sharing that with me! I'm very glad that Flynn has been able to transfer his personal experiences and emotions into such a meaningful medium so that other people can hopefully become more sympathetic and understanding of disabled people like Maria. I hope Flynn and his loved one takes care.
I also want to thank you for your wonderful work on Shadow gens. Dark Beginnings and the game were just so moving. I hadn't played Sonic games since I was a kid, so this was such a lovely way to get to know the characters again.
Just wanted to say thank ya for what you’ve been doing with this franchise. I am looking forward to whatever comes next in the series with your involvement in it.
Thank you very much Ian for the work provided both in the prologue and in the game. The Sonic franchise had a bad fall at one point, but it seems to be recovering now with the new projects announced. It's a little sad that Bumblekast won't really be like they used to be, but they'll still be entertaining.
So, Black Doom can regenerate from any Black Arms biomass due to his hive mind status? That's somewhat terrifying, especially if there are any more Black Arms in space... Speaking of which, if Black Doom was hiding out on the Ark before Generations, what were his reactions to the events of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors?
If anything, I find it incredibly terrifying how anyone in SA2 could've walked past that larva, *WHO WAS JUST WAITING FOR 50 YEARS ABOARD THE ARK BTW,* and they never knew it was there...
@MaxusFox23 I guess? Black Doom kept most of his cards close to his chest. I was going more for a comedic situation with Doom just being flabbergasted at Sonic and Eggman's shenanigans. Especially the Gaias and Wisps.
Evan really put in all that effort for the journal! Way to go! I was curious about the details with the Chaos Emerald. Ian really does look into the details!
In the Archie Comics, Mogul Mammoth said that he’s immortal, so all he’s got to do is wait until Sonic and his friends die. However, Shadow’s also immortal. What’s to stop him from getting in Mogul’s way?
So, can we acknowledge how kinda terrifying it is that larva was up there in the Ark with our cast the whole time during SA2? Just... WAITING... these past 50 years. *Imagine how many times they must've just walked past by it and they never knew it was there.*
I got my nephew this game, when he started playing Shadow gens and got to the early cutscene where Shadow comes across Tails' fake emerald, aaaaand my 10 yr old nephew skips it before learning its fake. Says "yeah I know how this works, you get an emerald". XD So much careful tie in work aaaand skip.
Question related to 29:47 - Were Maria to survive the tragedy on the ARK, how would you convey her family-inherited ego in distinction from the rest of her relatives? Would she have one to begin with?
23:04 I’m not tryna correct but I’m pretty sure the reason why it’s yellow is because that’s the color of the fourth emerald in shadow the hedgehog and you know the line.
I really hope Tracy Yardley draws some of the Sonic/DC crossover. He probably won't, but I hope so. I'm most excited to see Silver and Green Lantern team-up.

Hey, I have a question about Sonic X Shadow Generations! Ian has talked about how some planned things like animation changes were originally planned and cut, which is why we have things like Classic Sonic eating Angel Island. So I was wondering if there were ever any plans early on for Omega and Big to play a more recurring role in either game. I noticed that Omega doesn't actually talk in any cutscenes in Shadow Generations, only showing up wordlessly when Shadow first enters white space. And both Omega and Big are limited to their introduction scenes while Maria, Gerald, and Rouge show up repeatedly. Mainly, I'm wondering if those two were originally going to show up to cheer on Sonic in the Time Eater fight since we now know Shadow rescued them, and then later show up at Sonic's birthday. This isn't a complaint by the way, just curious. I loved how you wrote them in their hub world text and it was so great to see them playing a role in a story again! Also, just wanted to say thank you to you both for maintaining this podcast all this time. It happens so often it can't be easy to keep up with on top of your other responsibilities, but it's always so nice to get glimpses into behind the scenes stuff!
