One aspect of this part of the game that I think gets a bit overlooked is how Ellie has to take care of herself the entire time. It avoids the common trope of the savior coming in at the last second to save the day, with Joel only coming in at the end to restore her back to her senses after her traumatic experience. Plus, that was probably the first time she had seen Joel conscious in several months, the relief she felt at that moment must have been something else.
That scene with Joel torturing those two guys gives me chills every time. If you saw that scene with no context you'd assume he is a psychopathic monster, but with our attachment to these characters we feel conflicted about it. This conflicted feeling gets stronger towards the end of the game. I honestly don't care much for the gameplay of The Last of Us anymore, but the characters and story are great.
I think the soundtrack for this game is exceptionally well done and arguably some of the best stuff I've ever heard in a video game. It blends in soo perfectly well with the cutscenes and gameplay, adding to the already emotionally intense gameplay and story.
Great video! You brought a lot of great points that made me think. I’ve played this game four times and I recently finished it. The winter chapter felt very difficult for me to get through because of the vulnerability ellie has and her loss of power. I thought that it was interesting how differently she played from Joel, and how it connected to her as a character. I thought that it was really beautiful how she is capable yet vulnerable all at once, and this was told beautifully through both game mechanics and the story cutscenes you talked about. Hope you get more attention towards your videos!
The scene in the house where they have that intense conversation about Ellie and who she should keep going with, was so emotional, and amazingly well acted. 🙂
Yeah, there's a lot of little things. Like in the power plant when she's all excitedly telling him about the bandits and he just goes, "Are you hurt?", or in the university when he's opening up to her, or honestly when she shoots the dude in Pittsburgh and he yells at her - you can tell he's not really mad, he's just upset she had to do that.
This video was really great. I kind of expected it to be a glorified summary of the chapter, but you were making profound points throughout the whole story. Hope you get more popular! Subscribed. Btw, there is a bit of odd audio editing at 5:38
Good, well-written video. I found it interesting the David fight worked for you. To me, it's one of the few parts of The Last of Us that don't mesh. I definitely agree it is good at ratcheting up tension, but it also feel generically mechanical. All the pieces of the broken plates feel very purposefully hand-placed by designers, and if iirc it even upholds the standard video game rule of threes by having you hit David three times to "win" the boss fight. But this is only a small complaint I have with an otherwise excellent game. Really good video, keep it up.
Thanks! That''s a good point. Yeah the fight , although excellent thematically, did feel a little staged, and the mechanical elements stood out as authored. Naughty dog still struggles with organically weaving gameplay into environment design, but to be fair most developers do.
I've been a xbox player since the very first xbox (I'm 42) and I bought a ps5 just to play this game, it was worth every cent, still to play the second one but yeh naughtydog nailed, probably the best game experience I ever had, not so sure about uncharted though, was let down after all the hype I'd heard but this game....muaw, already on second play through
After playing the winter fot the first time i figured that i would never play a game as powerfull as tlou, almost 8 years later i was right, this game is truly a masterpiece and naughty dog's magnum opus.

The scene when Ellie kills David always manages to make me tear up. God, it’s such a powerful scene.
this made me realize that the torture scene foreshadows what Joel would do for Ellie at the end

Thank you for the kind words! Yeah it really struck me how masterfully they captured strength and weakness simultaneously.
Winter is my favorite chapter and has my favorite villain David
David.
Creepy pedo Biden who also eats people.
I think there is definite evidence that Joel cares for Ellie long before the Winter Chapter....

I do like how this guy explores how similar David and Joel truly are. Two sides of the same coin in my eyes.
What? It's just an ordinary cutsce-
8:09 OH MY GOODNESS, NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE!!!! YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!
This whole chapter was intense. The way joel got those guys to talk was brutal and incredible, showing a lot of his character.
And i like how ellie talks about it in tlou2
The winter chapter has always been my favourite part. What a beautiful game.

Thank you! Yeah I'm working on improving my production quality, i'm new to the whole video editing thing! Welcome aboard!

I, too, could tell the plates were staged, but it didn't really matter to me that much! :)
Im loving your content. and Last of us is one of my fave games of all time
Brother, thank you for your amazing work in this sequence!

U just gained a sub, great breakdown, I love this game so much. 😃

Lovely videi
the winter chapter for part 1 was one of the best chapters ever made in video game history.
Still on my to do list to play through this game
Most of your voice audio comes from one speaker, otherwise great analysis!
Thank you! Sorry about that ,i'm working on improving my production quality
No need to apologise! Im sure you are already aware of that, just want to safe.

The best game ever made.
It was a shame they ever even THOUGHT of making a series, as the game ALREADY IS the series.
I understand that I’m the minority in saying this, but this section of the game is some of the most frustrating shit I had to deal with in the game.
David's men fired first in my book it's self defense!
