The first time I saw Kovaleva, in Raymonda, I thought 'she should be a Prima Ballerina'. Now, she is! A very well deserved promotion for a wonderful dancer, in my opinion one of the best at the Bolshoi. Thank you very much for this video!

I feel for the members of the corps in ballet. They can do just about everything a 'prima ballerina' can do and must sit and watch so much of the time, they are treated as the bottom of any hierarchy is treated and paid way too little. One thing I really appreciate about other forms of dance is their more egalitarian nature. Everyone on this stage has spent years and years training. They are all exceptional dancers!
Yes, that's why it's the Bolshoi (Mariinsky, Royal, ABT etc.) Prima & Principle Dancers must be ready to travel & perform, "represent". Not every dancer wants that constant level of commitment, I suspect.
Any dancer in Marinsky and Bolshoi can probably be a prima anywhere else. That’s what makes their company the best in the world.
That is why Bolshoi should add to its other ballets that incorporate the corps of ballet.When we see Balanchine's choreographies all the members of the ballet are constantly dancing.
But in ballet, getting to a corps position IS the top and I don’t think the corps dancers see it the way you do , it’s kind of insulting. To be a professional means you are ELITE.

You just mad she doesn't take her feet off point asap like most dancers do during a performance and she also isn't loud. Can't stand loud dancers.. . I can't stand it when I can hear their shoes creaking.. .

Congratulations! Another Vaganova graduate. It sure looks like it is easier to be named a Prima at the Bolshoy than the Mariinsky.
Given that the title of principal dancer should indicate that any dancer so named performs the majority of principal roles, I do not think this promotion is merited over other leading soloists who dance many more principal roles than she does: e.g. Kretova and Vinogradova. But apparently, the Bolshoi is using a different metric, having also promoted Savin and Lopatin, neither of whom dance most principal roles. Lopatin is a fabulous dancer but his diminutive height/ frame and boyish appearance precludes him from dancing most principal roles. Savin is a brilliant dance actor but his technical ability is that of a soloist.
Alena is brilliant… an epitome of a Prima Ballerina..

Her height is disconcerting . Ballerinas ideally will be shorter and smaller than their partners. Accepting very tall girls in a company requires very tall men to partner them. Thus they get the roles and “shorter” men - the same height as Nureyev and V Vasiliev - are not given the opportunities that taller dancers get.
She is a very graceful dancer though, elegance. Grace. She goes over on her pointed shoes more so than most.. . Her arms are very delicate when she moves them and has a perfect contrast between brightness and energy while moving fluently with the music. Idc how tall she is. She is the better dancer.. . 🖤🖤🖤🖤 I can see on her toes she goes over on point and that's something I notice most don't do.. . They barely touch point while she STAYS THERE and even goes over. Oh and she's not loud.. .

The dance with Tissi in Raymonda was enchanting. One thing I noticed about her, she seems to acknowledge the audience with an ever so slight smile and wink at just the right time. She's already a skilled performer, very confident.

A principal dancer should by definition dance the principal repertoire. She doesn’t because of her height. I think Kristina Kretova deserved promotion before AK because she dances most of the principal roles.
Хорошая девочка. Но к ней надо относиться очень бережно в плане репертуара. У неё физическое строение , как у Волочковой, Цискаридзе, такого плана. Вот Николай очень правильно оценил свои возможности и не кидался на все роли подряд. Дай бог, чтобы рядом был грамотный педагог.

I think she looks beautiful, beautiful proportions, pretty face, long legs. The only problem is that she is 178 cm in height so it will be difficult for her to find a partner and will be probably difficult for them to lift her because I doubt that she is 52 kg
The male dancers need a power-room. In older videos we can see every ballerina with more muscles - with a body! Look into the videos about russian ballet technice. No toothpickers there. I think it`s a wrong way - to be anorectic always slimming and hungry. In cuba there can eating and they have a brilliant style. Same in Brasil.

Her pirouettes are not really good, and Inside she is not superstar yet, she is more like to be a student of the ballet school yet. She is too tall even for Bolshoi, and it is obvious how hard it is for mail partners work with her.I am sure in Russia there are many extraordinary talented ballerinas . But anyway it is great chance for this beautiful girl to climb up to the top.

She’s okay, but bland. I prefer ballerinas with personality and technique, like Osipova and Smirnova. Her Odile is lacking greatly in a “personality” role.
That "technique" should be called OUCH leme make it look like I've got tons of energy but in reality I'm trying to get off point as quick as possible and get this pain over with while rushing dances.. . And being loud.. . She stays on point and lives in the pain.. . Longer than most do.. . She isn't too quick to jump from one dance move to the next and try to cover it up with "ENERGY" other dancers are sloppy.. . And loud. I said what I said.. .

Ok, she's a romantic. Yawn. The Black Swan was, at best, vapid. Technique without emotion is just steps. Let's see her do Don Quixoie or the Rose Adagio (without cheating). Then I'll applaud.
I might have the minority opinion. Found her too “green” to be a Bolshoi prima as she still struggles with controlling her long limbs. I doubt this promotion would happen that early if Smirnova didn’t leave the Bolshoi.

I agree that Alena's technique is not perfect, but in my opinion being prima is more about being a star and Alena definitely is one. Smirnova doesn't have even a fraction of Alena's charisma.
The artistic appeal definitely is unique for each person. Kovaleva doesn’t really have an appeal to me. I’m also not exactly a big fan of Smirnova, but she at least didn’t make me worry about technical aspects.
That said, this is an expected promotion. The most head-scratching part of recent Bolshoi’s promotions to me is Sergeenkova’s elevation to leading soloist. The girl is barely in the company and Vaziev already threw her into principal roles like O/O.
I was hoping for Olga Marchenokrov to get the position.

I still can't believe the Bolshoi would get rid of amazing, fantastic principals like Maria Alexandrova and would promote dancers like this. Bolshoi dancers no longer have the strength and spark that they've always been known for... really sad

@@timothyk9086 I agree with you. However, the promotions of Kokoreva and Sergeyenkova are promising. Sevenard is also a dancer very fit for the Bolshoi stage I think.

Alexandrova and Kaptsova are just too old. It's time for younger dancers. They are different (as every dancer) but not worse than your beloved pensioners. And it is not a Bolshoi's problem that you do not like young dancers.
@@tanikN I do like young dancers and I mentioned a few. I just prefer the companies like Bolshoi, Mariinsky, Paris Opera to keep their style and nurture and promote dancers that represent this style. And I don't understand why dancers with long limbs and nice lines are so easily treated as prodigies today when they lack on so many other aspects. Give chances, sure, but also give time, help them grow and mature. Thrusting them into too many leading roles is good for no one, not the theater, not the public, not the dancers. Skorik and Somova will forever be ridiculed and Kovalyova might follow the same path because of their premature promotions. And regarding Alexandrova and Kaptsova, Idk, are they older than Zakharova? When the prima status was removed from Kaptsova, she was still pretty heavily involved in almost all productions. It did not seemed fair to me, this treatment.

I like the compilation very much! I am not a fun of Kovalyova, although I liked her a lot as a student in Vaganova. She definitely has a lot of potential and I agree with others regarding her charisma, stage presence, artistry. She is one of the best first-act Nikiyas I have recently seen, her characterization is so fresh and she is so engaging. And I have to bring the attention to the part at 07:55-08:05. What amazing port de bras, plus she finishes her pirouettes with pique attitude?!? Wow, just wow! I don't remember other dancers using these elements in this variation. I hope I get to see more of "that" Kovalyova in the future.

I just happened to see in a video that Nikulina also finishes her pirouettes the same way in this variation. Maybe there are others that I haven't seen or noticed... well it was Kovalyova that caught my eye on that, she is definitely very graceful in that variation.

Yes, Tissi departed due to the war. According to his Instagram, the war was the reason, but he hopes to return.
@@TheBunduBallerina I appreciate your response, B Ballerina. One of my cousins, originally for Montreal, Canada, Suzanne Rosenberg was sent at age 17 to Moscow where she attended high school. She had fallen in love with a young teenage poet in Montreal, and her middle class parents were alarmed that THEIR daughter would wed a 'penniless' poet. As it turned out, Suzanne married a famous Moscow poet and the Montreal poet also become highly prominent. And while all the above is of interest, what most interests me was the long friendship my cousin enjoyed with the world renowned ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya, whose career I actively followed in the West, in several countries. In fact I dedicated poems of my devising to the legendary ballerina and was priveledged to see Plisetskaya perform many times over the years in prestige venues like the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City. And my Moscow cousin was kind enough to send me an impressive black and white photo of Ms. Plisetskaya, autographed across the white tutu. It is one of the treasurable mementos of my life. Even in her eighties the ballerina's purity of heart and soulful beauty shone through.

Thanks for commenting. Prima is only rare in western companies. At ballet companies such as the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky, Prima Ballerina is the title given to all female principals.
