My favorite joke from the series needs some explanation for everyone who doesn't speak Hungarian.
The Hungarian alphabet has 44 letter (because of course it does..) and two of those letters are 'j' (commonly referred to as "dotted j") and 'ly' (commonly referred to as "l-y j") they are both the exact same sound, there is practically no difference between them, but it's tradition so it's part of the language. The bad thing is you need to memorize every word that has a "j" in it and remember whether it's a "j" or an "ly". For example the word stupid is "hülye" with an "ly".
Now.. in one episode they asked their neighbor, Dr. Máris to tutor the daughter, Kriszta, because she was failing her classes. Then some time later Máris came back and told the parents he won't tutor her, because she wrote "Hüje Máris with a dotted j on his front door."
Upon hearing it, the father, Géza shouts at her, "Did you write Hülye with a dotted j on his door? Go back in this instant and fix your spelling!"

Bruh, as a native English speaker who has mostly only been exposed to other Indo European languages, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, in terms of writing systems, with the only other Uralic language I've seen being Finnish, Hungarian definitely looks a LOT more alien to me, even compared to Finnish lol. They may both be Uralic, but they seem to be written COMPLETELY fucking differently lol. Then again, Turkish also looks pretty alien to me too, but that is literally the ONLY Turkic language I've ever been exposed to the writing of lol. Why the fuck Turkish gotta have an I with a dot and without one? And they're completely different letters too? WTF? Also, about the show itself, but Kriszta is literally the tallest 14 year old I've EVER fucking heard of, both in fictional humans and when compared to tall people I've seen in real life lol. My cousin was 6'3 or 190 cm when he was 16, and he was considered FREAKISHLY tall for a boy his age lol. I'm 25, am a trans woman, so, ya know, I was born a man and went through male puberty to its completion pretty much (at least in my case), and I'm only 6'0 or about 182 cm lol. A 14 year old cis girl being anywhere NEAR as tall as Kriszta is CONSISTENTLY depicted in the clips shown in this video is EXTREMELY TALL for a girl ANYWHERE ON EARTH lol. The girl looks like she's over 180 fucking cm at her age, which most girls don't even get to as ADULTS in even the TALLEST countries lol. Fuck, here in the US, the average adult woman is 5'4 or about 162 cm. My mom is 5'7, or about 170 cm, and she's already pretty tall for a cis woman lol. I just CANNOT fucking get over how FREAKISHLY FUCKING TALL Kriszta keeps being depicted for her age it is absolutely fucking BONKERS lol
@@MelodyGoad There are some insane right wingers who literally believe that Hungarian is so unique they dismiss that it is even remotely related to Finnish.. meanwhile I've been talking to some people in English in voicechats and literally nobody ever guessed that my native language was Hungarian, but multiple people guessed that I was Finnish. Over a thousand years of separation where the two languages seemingly don't even compare, but upon hearing them people think they sound so similar. Also.. yes, Hungarian has o, ó, ö, ő, u, ú, ü, and ű, and they are completely different letters, also s, z, sz, and zs are also different.. :D
For Kriszta's height.. I literally never noticed. I saw this series when I was a literal baby and she just didn't look odd to me. Looking at screenshots now she is even taller than both parents (on most shots, because it's a bit inconsistent) in season 3 where she might be actually older, like 17-18? I'm an amateur artist myself and I did distort reality in ways to make it fit the narrative as all of us do unless it's some highly technical illustration, and my guess is her design was the result of the decision to make her clearly the older sibling.
Now that I looked through them she was even as tall or taller in a few shots than Neighbor Máris in season 3 who was a morally gray character at best and just evil and selfish at worst. He also had these devilish features like the pointy ears and pointy hooked nose (totally not coded as Jewish, lol) alongside being taller then even proper villain characters through the season. I feel like now I really understand why animations always make old people so short, so there's a much higher range for height difference in teenagers and adults.
Kriszta was possibly the character with the clearest moral compass too, and having her stand out so much can be a visual reinforcement of her values. Also.. if the never seen but frequently mentioned Uncle Pisti was 190 cm+ and had a lighter hair color than the parents that would explain a lot..
How am I meant to make a nationalistic Hungarian comment that everything is Hungarian on a video about something that is already Hungarian, this is unfair

90% of the jokes in this show just be lost in translation.
The script was written by a famous comic poet, who filled the show with a lot of puns and grammatical jokes. Moreover, most of the conflict revolves around the *simplicity* of Hungarian grammar. This shines through the "boring" 2nd season, as the focus is on Aladar's dry wit, his out of the box understanding of language and his cynical, dark humor. As a native speaker, the 2nd is the funniest season.
The second season is one of the bests and as a child I enjoyed it much more compared to the others. Probably Aladár is in a much more relatable setting.

The funny thing is that still after 50 YEARS the show is still very relatable to us, Hungarians, and probably all around Central Europe and the Balkans. Absoulute Cult Classic. RIP Romhányi.
I need to pay a visit to Romhányi Street. It was named after Romhányi, who was born there. It's in the 22nd district of Budapest. I played and cycled a lot in that area when I was a kid. The graveyard at the end of the street spooked the daylight out of us.
I do remember watching it as a kid in Bulgaria. One of the best things on TV really. At least for kids.

@@SLeslie Can't argue with that. Ours is one of the safest countries in Europe at the moment. But it's not because we improved, it's because everyone else fell backwards. But our 27% tax is very high even by western standards. We can't sustain ourselves, we have to keep selling stuff to stay afloat, but because relationships have soured, the EU cut off our funding. We're being slowly starved out. The EU giveth, the EU can taketh away I guess...

The Aladár spin-off series was extremely creative though, with some surprisingly dark episodes. I remember once he visited a planet where AI already conquered and enslaved humanity hundreds of years ago and basically the robots completely abused people for everyday work and activities. Another time he landed on a planet where a boy of his age started to explain to him how faster time passes here and the local humans live faster too, and like 5 minutes later said boy was an old man barely holding on to life.
Also Aladár didn't get the spaceship, he built it himslef. The intro of the series even shoved him trying many different prototypes before his current one, named Gulliver-5 finally worked.
Yeah that was my favorite of the 3 shows. Made my heart sink when he said he can't bear to watch them :(
@@scaperist Yes. Weirdly similar to Family Guy, where the "Stewie and Brian's adventures" episodes are considered the best by many, the "Aladár and Blöki adventures" episodes were some of the best in Mézga család too.
That series deserves it's own video. It was hands down one of most creative series on TV when I was a kid, in a sea of mediocre plots and narrations of modern (read: 90s kids animated stuff) it really made me wonder where those two will go next

😂😂😂 Máris in hungarian means " in a minute" or very soon. It can be a response to asking something, like " can you help me, please?" yes, in a minute. So it is also a pun with words suggesting that the neighbour is needy and demanding, and wants quick response for his demands.
This show truly had a major overlap and cultural impact throughout the Eastern Europe. Even I - a kid born in 2003 from Czechia - still grew up on watching this show (“Smolíkovi” in Czech). Till this day me and my brother still quote Paulas iconic “I should have married Pista Hufnagel.” when something “doesn’t go according to the plan” 😄

So in the Czech dubbing the name remained Pista Hufnágel? Interesting, given the family name was changed to Smolíkovi, I'd expect Paula's long lost flame's name would be also translated to something more familiar. Anyway, if Pista is an existing Czech name, then please ignore this comment :D

Actually, many of our artists were notorious for ripping off foreign songs and shows and subsequently gaining a lot of success here 😅 so I doubt this would have been the problem, so no, I don’t think that’s the case.
Then again, I can’t dismiss it, as I don’t know the true reason.
I rember this airing on Minimax Romania 20 years ago as "The Wacky Family" and we all loved it. It felt like nothing else. This and "Stories from the magyar folklore". I did not know these cartoos were so old, wich makes them even cooler.

As an animation student from the US I give noting but respect for the studio who made this show. The quality is insane for a Soviet budget while at the same time you had western shows like the Beatles cartoon with animation that actually looks like it was made with a Soviet budget
yep, but as a choice of style. Check Vuk, thats the hungarian equivalent of a Disney movie. They didn't have the budget for proper shadows, but the backgrounds - made accidentally, as the rain destoryed the watercolor paintings - are beautiful

Hungary was a commie country but not part of the Ussr. So there was no soviet budget. You would be surprised if you get know how many western animations were here drawn and colourised due to the cheap Hungarian labour costs. Those incomes could cover creating the local pieces.
This show had everything. Nasty neighbour, babuskas, gangsters, maffia, pork slaughter, shitty cars, no money, family screwing each other, wife wanting to leave, father wanting to make more money without any actual skills. Lol😅

I am German and I know this show! They showed in the 80s and even in the early 90s on German TV. I remember a whole show though about the boy being a teenager called "Archibald" in the German version who is flying to space every night. I loved this show so much because he was exploring a different planet every night! It was super trippy and surreal. LOVED IT despite being a super small toddler and only remembering little bits of it. But I really liked it!

That's the spin off series. In east Germany it was extremely popular as well, though he was called "Adolar" not Archibald. I was born in 2002 and still grew up with this show.
As a hungarian, it feels so different someone talking about these. It's like when you are a guest teacher visiting another's class and you just inspect how they present the subject. I love watching these videos, keep it up!

According to Czech Wikipedia those banned episodes were first and the last of second series (Második dimenzió and Anti-világ). These were broadcasted later in 2000s when series was re-run.
Smolíkovi (as we call them here) have cult following here too and "Why didn't I married Pista Huffnagel?" is catchphrase in Czech too.

Aladár did not teach Blöki to speak. The dog learned it in the first season thanks to the regular gift by MZ/X, and seemingly lost the ability at the end of that episode. However, Aladár and Blöki kept it a secret that this was not the case.
Also, I don't know which two episodes they banned in Czechoslovakia. But one episode that needed to be altered was the "Prehistoric Planet", where Aladár and Blöki basically enter a Planet of the Apes situation. Since commie ideologists did not approve the concept of regressing societies, despite going to the future in the book version, the TV series depicted them travelling to the past.

Too bad Blöki was nowhere to be found in Mezga on Vacation.
This show still has reruns in Hungarian TV. I caught an episode last weekend.
A bit of trivia: the voice of Géza did the voice for Lord Helmet in Spaceballs for the Hungarian dub and one of Aladár's actor (he had multiple voices) grew up to be a musician and song writer. He also voiced Sid the sloth in the Ice Age movies. He will turn 60 next year. And Géza's voice actor will be 90 years old.
Géza's voice actor is also the voice of Danny DeVito's characters. I always imagine DeVito with his voice.

The Mezga Family on Vacation was broadcast in Brazil in the 90s.
Small correction: according to the theme song, Aladár made the inflatable spaceship himself, which he hides inside his violin case when not used. His current design, the Guliverfli 5 is the 5th design. The 4th one was a flying saucer design, which Blöki uses in one of the episodes. He and Aladár have a fight because Aladár is being flippant with his family, goes off alone and gets captured on a planet where he is mandated to rest and is being taken care of by robots. Blöki goes after him and ultimately rescues him. Upon returning home, having learned his lesson about being lazy, Aladár starts shoveling snow like his life depends on it.

I'm hailing from the Philippines born and raised abroad - and finding out about obscure media, culture, and cartoons from ex-Soviet countries from a bygone era - from somewhere I myself have never heard of or been through, only being able to learn about it through books and history, is a refreshing experience.

I think most Eastern Europeans would find this series relatable. I heard it was translated to Czech too.
It was dubbed in Bulgarian too. But you could see the strange letters on screen and hear the original hungarian language.
Yeah, a kid living in a nation using cyrillic script will easily find latin alphabet somewhat similar but also strange, as some letters look alike and some don't.

@@pepita2437 cartoon is dubbed into slovak language too as it was ironically meant for a younger audience, anything intended for children younger than 12 must to be dubbed from Czech to Slovak by the law. I remember intro song being slovakian from my own childhood...
When I watched it the first time I thought it was Slovak. Gejza and Paula Miazgovci with their children seemed like a normal Slovak family and even a name such as Pišta Hufnágel wouldn't have been out of place somewhere in southern Slovakia.

As a german whose parents come from the german democratic republic, i am proud to say i know these guys
I’ll always find it funny how the German acronym for east Germany was ddr (dance dance revolution)
Although the family is middle-class (which is not the widest class in a socialist country), Paula, the wife and mother definitely has some noble class arrogance in her behaviour. She probably comes from a family of lower nobility which got disenfranchised after WW2 during the communist deprivatization. That explains her constant frustration with her middle-class chinovnik husband and fawning over her lost sweethart, not realizing that it is actually Geza who remains at her side in spite of her constant bickering.
It's a familiar dynamic of Eastern-European relationships, where the woman mourns her idealized lost romance (that had probably never been a reality), while there is a balding bearbelly husband who doesn't give her enough attention, but goes the length to provide for his wife and kids nonetheless.
I think most of the Hungarian population has noble class arrogance. Hungarians believe they deserve everything without doing anything. The two-tailed dog party nailed this attitude with their program "we want money but no work", aka "Ne kelljen dolgozni, de legyen pénz".
That's literally almost every average couple in the world. I've never understood why the love between a husband and a wife slowly begins to die down after like 10 years of marriage and just goes downhill fast from there.

I'm the only American I know IRL that likes mézga család. not counting people I've talked to online that like it. I found out about it while stumbling through vintage animation online. UA-cam used to have the whole series uploaded, but only 2 episodes were subtitled in English. But I knew a bit of German from college, so I would watch the east German dub, and sort of made out the plots from that, translating episode synopses online, or just guessing based off of the animation. The American cartoon that this reminds me more of than "Family Guy" is "Wait till your father gets home" but despite the mézgas having a smalleer budget, I like the animation in it better than "Wait till your father gets home." I wish Hungarian animation was not obscure in the US. I'm a fan of Gustav, and József Nepp in my opinion is the Hungarian version of Chuck Jones. The Aladár season is interesting, because in true socialist fashion, it deals with topics that are quite dark, in a kids show. Like the 2D planet (religion and science and social change), or the planet where people have 1 day to live, etc.
I also loved the second season. Very interesting perspectives
The second season is a work of art. I still remember the episodes you've mentioned some 30 years later.
I'll add to your examples the planet where humans were used as literal tools by robots.
The realest part about the whole Vacation season is that OF COURSE none of them speaks english or any other language (other than Aladár and Máris, the neighbor) 😃😀

Coming from then Czechoslovakia this show was and still is a cult classic in my country.
About the banned episodes: I do not know for certain, but I think these were the ones. Excuse any inaccuracies, it's been more than 10 years since I've seen these episodes.
In the first one, Aladár visits a planet, which is an irradiated wasteland. They get captured by robots and taken to one of the inhabitants of the planet. He explains that there are only two residents of the planet left, who have been waging war against one another for 100 years, but they do not know why anymore. In the end, they are captured by the other local, who decides to destroy Planet Superbellum and Aladár and Blöki manage to escape in the nick of time.
The other one I suspect having been banned is the episode with the planet where everyone is a spy. I don't remember much of the details (I didn't have the pirate DVD for this one growing up) but I think the gist of it was that the more ordinary someone is, the more suspicious they are. Aladár is also accused of being a spy of course, with the sentence "Legveszedelmesebb az ilyen apró kém, kicsi-kém", which is a Hungarian pun about the word for "little darling" (kicsikém) being made up of "small" (kicsi) and "spy" (kém).
In case someone was wondering why the two episodes were banned in Czechoslovakia, it was due to the political situation (a.k.a. known as normalization). The episodes that were banned were the Flat planet and the episode Anti-világ (anti world). According to the censors they vialoted the views of the party.
So basically the first and the last episode. I understand the banning of Anti-world, it takes a place in a world where everything is backwards and reversed. The society is made of kings, sultans, emperors and maharajas, ruled by one person called The People, who is the sole worker of the entire civilization, and instead of making things, his job is to destroy.

@@jljljl1820 th episode with the flat world is about a civilization that lives on a two dimensonal plane where the only vowel allowed in speech is 'e' (it's a funny gimmick of Hungarian language that you can make sensible albeit rather convoluted sentences with words tgat only contain the vowel e). An old teacher question the status quo by using forbidden vowels, because he believes that this taboo only hinders progress, and because of that he is arrested and tortured by the monarch to withdraw his "heretic" views.

I am from Romania and in 2000s they put this cartoon on Minimax such a great series, very creative when they fly in the future and they have that spacecraft that you can deflate.
It actually aired in Romania before Minimax was even a thing - I've seen it during my childhood in the '90s.

Growing up in Czechia in a half Slovak half Hungarian family, I really did get a lot out of this show. It's really interesting since the Slovak dubbing is much more literal and close to the original than Czech. Just a different take on adaptation, not better or worse in quality. I went on to get a degree in translatology; I never thought much about this show, but now that I reflect, it's a fascinating case study on different localization approaches

Hell I thought I made it up in my mind as a kid even.
A few years ago caught one episode on tv, followed it through and man! The dialogue among the family members is top notch. Modern Hollywood writers should learn from them.
Other show worth mentioning is called "Kérem a következőt!" translated to "Next please!" the everyday-adventures of a family doctor called Dr. Bubó, an antropomorphic owl with all other types of antropomorphic animal friends. This setup and usually playing with the language again provides the usual humor and backbone to the episodes. And boy those episodes! The anti-drug episode doesn't go Mr. Mackey "Drugs are bad m'kay?", rather the main character and his friends get drugged and start flying high (emphasis that they are avians). Or when the overly hungry hippo breaks his legs and proceeds to drink the liquid plaster cast to which Bubó replies "Let's hope it goes to his bones."
What makes me wonder is how little these studios needed to make such quality shows back then.
I thought the series's title was "Dr. Bubó" and not "kérem a következőt". 😆

When I was a kid, I was watching Dexter's Laboratory. My Eastern European mom didn't understand English (CN was mainly in English back in the late 90s until around the mid 00s), but she was impressed with the cartoon and stated that Dexter reminded her a lot of Aladar.
Then she showed me Mezga Csalad and even as a kid, I was also impressed how similar and yet so different it was compared to Dexter. And oh boy, what a scumbag the desired Pista Hufnagel turned out to be :D .
It was dubbed in Romanian, it was a really nice series, and funny! Thank you for this...I forgot about them!

In Czechia it was renamed as Smolíkovi (kinda common Czech family name) and I absolutely loved it growing up. My favorite one was the vacation one where they got scammed by wife's past "love" into going for pretty horrible adventure around the world... and of course the space travelling show of the son (Ládínek in Czech). Truly a classic.
I discovered this show years ago when I was interested in learning Hungarian but never really watched it. The theme song is a banger, though. That's why I still remember it.

Thank you for making a video about the Mézga Család. My favorite season was the 2nd. I loved Aladár's adventures through space. It showed different worlds and cultures.
There was an episode where he got trapped on a planet where every wish came true but he was not allowed to leave. He had to cleverly escape using this wish-gimic.
There was an episode where he visited a 2D planet. It showed an interesting perspective of how 2D and 3D ppl could communicate and understand each others' worlds.
In an other episode he visited a world where only 2 ppl were still alive. They were extremely old, being kept alive by mashines. They waged war against each other with robots.
And many other.
Also I didn't know a 3rd season existed lol

this cartoon was on TV in Brazil in the 90's on a kids show. i watched it i was 7 years on in 1993. i didn't knew was an adult show. most cartons of this kids show was experimental and obscure animations from europe. some of them were was scary like "Der Hund Bohumil"
In Czech they're called "Smolíkovi". I mostly watched the show where the son, whose Czech name I can't remember, built a rocket and traveled across planets.

Dutch guy here. I watched this series in the 90s as a kid. It was fully Dutch narrated and they where described as a Holland family (Sanders family). Never knew they where originally Hungarian.
Gusztáv is also a pretty good hungarian cartoon. It has 5 min episodes, and it doesn't have any talking, so everyone can understand. It was my absolute favourite as a kid.

As a Hungarian, I can confirm this is indeed a timeless classic. We used to watch the series and the feature film a lot with my 2 younger brothers back in the early 2000s.
Pannónia Filmstúdió was the cartoon animation studio that produced this and a lot of other classics. Their quality got much better in the 1980s, where there produced classic feature films like Vuk and Cat City (Macskafogó in Hungarian). They even animated the cartoon character of Pumuckl in the very popular 1980s West German children's TV series of the same name. Pumuckl is about a fun little creature with human features - Kobold in German - who lives in the workshop of a nice old carpenter in Munich and can turn invisible at will. His character is remindful of a mischievious little boy, often causing mayhem. The series combines actual sets and actors with the animated character of Pumuckl. It is very charming and fun and the animation is very good!

It's known in my country as ''De Familie Sanders is anders'' (The family Sanders is different), with lots of names changes to Dutch.
So far, only the vacation saga has been aired. There was also one Mezga cartoon that was suppose to be made around in 2004, but due the financial problem, the cartoon was canned.

Fun fact: football fans in Hungary always referred to former Bulgarian striker Yordan Letchkov as "Máris szomszéd", because of the resemblance between him and the character from the show 😂
I never knew the original name of the show, it was translated to Czech for us, including the name of the family, so we didn't even know their original name. If you grew up in Czechia and watching the local programming with the Czech language dubbing, you would never tell that it was made in Hungary. It feels so natural to watch it in your mother tongue with even the name of the family translated.
As a fan of Foreign Old Cartoons, It has always fascinated me with the art and animation style of this animation and is now obsessed with looking at the character designs..
Nickelodeon's Pinwheel series from 40 years ago did that to me.

Although I'm 17 and the show was long discontinued by the time I came around, I was introduced to it by my parents and grandparents, and I couldn't be more glad. I loved the show as a kid and I still remember it fondly. I used to love how Géza and Paula look so much like my grandparents, with Géza also being the name of my grandfather. I also inserted myself as Aladár as we were similar appearance wise when I was of that age. I love this show so much, and I will definitely show it to my kids. Although I watch your content, so we'll see if that works out :)

I'm Hungarian, and this show was such a staple of my childhood. I was born in the 90s, but it still aired regularly when I was a kid. The vacation one was always my favourite. I still watch it every single summer
My favourite season was the 2nd one, mainly because it was the only one I had on DVD when growing up, but also because I love this old soviet sci-fi style and the show captured it amazingly. The czech dubbing was seriously great and the humor translated into czech also briliantly. I watched the first season on YT, but have yet to see the 3rd and it still holds up even today. Trully a great shame that the studio was struggling financially, they deserve way more recognition, just like many other eastern europe kid TV shows

If you want any more hungarian cartoons, I recommend watching the Cat city "macskafogó" films. There's two of them, but I recommend the first one more, since it got the better humor and animation.
MAcskafogo was translated to English luckily. (Cat city). The other Hungarian cartoon series I would recommend is Dr Bubo. It's just as funny as Mezga Csalad. :)

In english it's hardly the same experience. The brilliance of the dialogs and the incredible voice acting of the best actors of the era in the original hungarian version is what makes Cat City the best cartoon movie ever made. Unfortunatelly in english, it is kind of mediocre. Lost in translation.
Omg this brought up so many memories I didn't know I had. Second season was my favorite, the episode where they flew to a planet where everyone ages super quickly so they just run from the stroller to their wedding and then jump into the grave
This show was aired in Brazil back in the nineties. I don't remember a lot, but I think it was one of the later seasons since they were travelling around a lot on the stories.
