  • My Shopsmith Mark V Headstock runs so strong and is so useful I just can't get rid of it. But, with the new Shopsmith Mark 7 in the garage, I can keep a second full sized machine. It's not a Short, it's not a Mini, it's not a Mark 4, its a "Shop Deputy"

    Really cool way to make use of the Mark V. I appreciate that you kept things simple by cutting down the cart to the right height. I would have overcomplicated the hell out of that. 😂

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Wayne! I overcomplicated it in my head for the better part of this week. I was looking at folding contractor saw stands and all sorts of implements. Just had the brainwave yesterday to shorten the keter and put the four feet on the four corners of the tool casters. I actually have 3 keter tables, so wasn't worried about this one becoming a donor.

      That's a great solution for anyone with the permanent floor space and who need their SPTs a little lower to the floor.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому +1

      The chopped down keter gets the base about 5 inches or so higher off the ground as compared to the Mark 5. That is going to put my Band Saw, Belt Sander, Jointer, and Jig Saw at a much more comfortable working height for me as compared to the Mark 5 base and especially the shorter Power Station.
      The shorty makes no sense to me given the few inches of permanent floor space that is recovered compared to the number of functions lost. The design of my Deputy folds up for winter parking with the Deputy living on top of the workbench where the Power Station once lived.

    Please do a video showing this machine as a drill press and table saw. If both of these work good then this could fit my limited space. The standard machine simply is bigger than I have room for.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому

      John, unfortunately the ShopDeputy, which is about 26 inches shorter than a full Shopsmith does not have the capacity for the main table carriage and so cannot be used as a a drill press or a table saw. You might want to look at what they call a "Shorty," which is a full size Shopsmith cut down by 14 inches. This video from Mike Young is a sales pitch really, but it will give you the idea what a Shorty is - ua-cam.com/video/F9GYYAlIVTM/v-deo.html

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому

      Hi Rob, I did not use the Shopsmith legs and casters for 2 reasons, 1. I wanted the working height to be about 4-5 inches taller to help my back and eyes and 2. when I pack the garage away so I can fit the cars in I have limited dedicated floor space. So, I need most of my tools store on top of the Mark 7 or on top of the Husky workbench at the back of the garage.

    Thanks for the video. Did you buy the kit or just use a copy of the plans for the cut length? Just wondered why you didn’t use the tubes that come with the kit. Will you drill your crosscut sled support boards to work with your new Mark 7? Enjoyed the use of the Husky adjustable workbench. I can see that being useful to keep stacking parts straight from the table saw ready to roll to the next work station. Looking forward to your next video.

    • @woodshopnerdery

      Thanks Larry. No, I did not buy the kit, but the plans can be downloaded for free from the Shopsmith web site. I put the link in the description of the video. Hey Tom, great video. Why didn’t you build a box as a mount instead of cutting down the work station, do you expect to change the SPT on the shop deputy or just leave it a band saw / sanding station.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому

      Thank Dave. If I had the permanent floor space I would definitely have built a cabinet base for storage. But the Shop Deputy will have to stack on top of the workbench during the winter. Yes, I will swap out the SPTs and use it in the same manner as a power station.

    Great job. I’ve been thinking about chopping my Mark V too. I have a 510 also. I’m so attached to my Mark V I’m a little gun shy to pull the trigger. The 510 table is much better so I don’t really need the 500 table. Maybe this is the way to go instead of a shorty. Curious as to why you didn’t use the 500 base with wheels to mount the deputy too? Again nice job.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Danny. I wanted my SPT tools to sit higher than they do on my Mark 5/7 base. The extra height helps my back and eyesight. Also, the system I designed lets me pack it up on top of my work bench in the winter so I can pull in two cars during heavy snow or these days extreme heat.

    I like the repurposing of the headrests and base mounts.
    I don't agree with the Shop Deputy concept in this situation.
    I think it would have made more sense to make your Mark 5 into a Mark 4, with the 510 table system, and a shop built cabinet mounted underneath.
    But hey, it's your shop, and your tools.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  2 роки тому

      Thanks Chad. In my technical mind I do not consider a shortened Mark V or Mark 7 a "Mark 4." What makes a Mark 5/7 is the five/seven functions. And what makes the five/seven functions are the included attachments. Since the base Mark 4 comes with nothing, it should be called a Mark Zero. So, to convert a Mark 7 into a Mark 4 you would have to actually throw away all the accessories in addition to installing the shorter tubes. Other wise you just have a shortened Mark 7.
      To try to explain my point of view, the way I look at the Shop Deputy is as a superior Power Station, which I am getting rid of this evening hopefully. I don't consider it just a smaller Mark 5/7.

    • @chadnevels246
      @chadnevels246 2 роки тому +1

      @@woodshopnerdery Ok, call it what you will.
      My point was I think a shorter Mark 5 would have been a better choice, to me.
      I don't see how you're saving much more space with your Shop Deputy, and at the same time giving up the stability of the base of a Mark, and the opportunity to have a second machine with a main table. Which could come in handy is you wanted to do a quick table saw operation, while having your Mark 7 setup for something else, possibly a time consuming setup at that.
      Plus, the option of extra storage by building cabinets attached to the base of the shortened Mark 5.
      Those are just the opinions from a dumb old machinist.
