The Wendigo is a creature that warns against the irreversible consequences of resorting to cannibalism in the face of winter deprivation. Such starvation posed a real threat if a community did not prepare for and conserve its resources during the long winters experienced in the Great Lakes basin.
Ever heard of the Donner Party? A group of people that got trapped in a blizzard, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. They had to resort to cannibalism on the bodies of already dead members of their group, in order to survive. Then a few years ago, some new information about the survivors of the Donner Party. While most of the survivors only ate the flesh of already dead bodies in order to survive. Two of the men, resorted to murdering their Native American guides, as well as weaker members of the group. One of these men confessed to his crime, and gave himself up to the authorities. The other ran away into the wilderness, there was a search for the man, but when the weather turned bad. The search was abandoned, and people forgot about the man. Assuming that he most likely died in the storm, or got eaten by an animal. The next few years fur trappers, mountain men, hunters, and travelers started going missing in the area where the Donner Party was found. There were even a few bodies found in the wilderness. Usually found with the back of their heads caved in. In a similar way that some of dead members of the Donner Party were found. The man was eventually caught, and arrested by a sheriff of a town. He was pretty much feral, more savage than human.
Beware the moon’s pale glow, my friend, For the Wendigo’s haunt knows no end. In the silent night, its mournful cries, Echo through the forest, where darkness lies. With antlered crown and eyes aflame, The Wendigo roams for blood to drain. It feasts on lost souls, whispers of dread, with a hunger unyielding, a hunger undead.
@ THE-X-Force, One nit pick, wendigo don't have antlers. That is a modern addition brought about by people confusing skinwalkers with wendigo and vice versa. Actually, skinwalkers only have antlers when they're pretending to be a deer so that's not even that accurate. Neat poem though. 👍
I first heard this when I was a little kid, I have retold it a bunch of times and every time no one seems to have heard it, its nice to know I wasnt imagining this story's existence!
I've been blessed too wonderlust in the UP and the area for two years now! I'm originally from the Southern US. It's a green desert up here and the threat of exposure, starvation, and death are next level from the forest back home. Be safe and be prepared I almost died in the Deer Park area of exposure in early June due to a rain and sudden drop in temperature and lack of being used to the environment

I've written two books focussed on the wendigo that I will not publish. The story of this monster is the First Nation's/Native American's to tell, not mine. Thank you for including Basil Johnson in in your research. I, pardon the expression, devoured everything he has written when I wrote my books. There's a really good book on wendigo psychosis or "wendigo fever" called Dangerous Spirits. It's a really good book. Does Wendigo (the Manitou) exist? Of course, but why don't cannibals turn into giant gaunt raving monsters? Easy... We, humans, are eating our Mother (Earth). The spirit doesn't have to possess anyone. We're doing his evil without provocation.
a short film called Miner's Mountain probably the closest depiction of survivors resorting to cannibalism then turned monsters due to long term deficiencies. In the comments of the film(on UA-cam)people say that the 2 survivors(killers) are Wendigos
This was in a book of Scary stories I read as a kid. I was 8 or 9, I'm 49 now. This was the first time I heard the name wendigo. The other stories about cannibalism was way after. But to me this one is far creepier.
I think the mythologies we encounter reflect the horrors and fears we have as society. It’s incredible how those stories have stayed with you 40 years after you’d first heard them.
@@MystOfMythology lol I have heard of the wendigo before I'm sure you noticed my icon and name. But I have always been fascinated with the wendigo when I was a kid like maybe the third grade or so I seen red eyes from something really tall in the tree line right after the sun went down but like I said I was a really young kid so I could of just been my mind but later in life learning about the wendigo that fit that exact experience kinda got me wondering from time to time. @@SkinWalkerDemonSpirt I'm glad I guessed right from the icon. Otherwise, the wink emoji might have come across as creepy. I, too, had a strange experience as a child when I was four years old.
