Indeed, running the PSP at 333/222mhz (cpu/gpu) will make it go 60FPS like the PS3 games. Wish the Vita Wipeout 2048 had 60fps, but with those visuals 30fps are forgivable. :)
Its much better in terms of handling for me than Fzero, also theres lots of speed classes so you can progressively get faster as your skill level increases
They're not short but they can be reduced by ripping your Wipeout Pulse UMD and copying it to memory stick and using custom firmware. Alternatively, you can remove load times all together by using the current emulator for PC.
Speaking of F-Zero, when are they going to release a new one? They haven't released one since the Gamecube. I don't have GX though I only have F-Zero X for the N64.
Can't blame you there, DoA's stage hazards are definitely awesome and make for a much more interesting fight. On top of that it's very satisfying knocking an opponent into the hazards as opposed to just getting a "Ring Out". So, I get what you're saying :)
me too, i remember my cousin got it for ps1 and after playing it for a couple hours i had to have it. when i was a kid i could go through every track without touching a wall, trying to replay it recently all these years later, it doesn't feel possible to be that good at the game, but somehow how did it.
@@Kencho27 which is better? i just started playing pure and to me it looks visually better than pulse based on what i've seen in this review. pure just has some amazing looking backgrounds that look better than anything i saw in this video, to me at least.
@@Jack_80 well its all personal preference, if you like how pure looks better than pulse then thats cool. although i would say from a gameplay standpoint pulse is definitely the better game. cant go wrong with either one though.
@@Kencho27 i played pulse on ps3 now that i think about it. the thing i didn't like about it was how they completely drop the tournament, now there's just medals where 1 in 5 events is an actual race, the rest are time attack modes and stuff like that.
@@Jack_80 im pretty sure pulse only came out on the psp and the ps2, dont know how you got it running on a ps3 lol. but yeah, thats the reason i prefer the pulse campaign though. it has more variety which is better imo. the physics in pulse also feel a lot tighter and just better in general, pure is very floaty and the acceleration is really slow in comparison.
F-Zero as well, it's very challenging. I grew up with Nintendo consoles also and had the first F-Zero and loved it from day one. I played wipEout first on Sega Saturn but never really liked the series until wipEout Fusion on PS2... but yea, both are very awesome. And you're right, they're too different to compare really :D
4:47, funny that you mention big screen tv. This game is PSTV compatible, so you can buy it on there and play it on your TV with a dualshock controller and it feels so much better than trying to use the handheld systems.
I'm not really into the Wipeout games but this might worth getting for it's visuals. Let me know some other good looking PSP games out there, I only have a handful of them.
I always feel like I should like the Wipeout series more than I do, but it probably is the difficulty/steep-learning curve of each game that makes them feel a bit too frustrating. But still, they are pretty rad and pretty fun
OMG. This remind me that I have the PS2 version and didn't play it yet! I was too busy playing RPGs and bore myself with Gran Turismo while I needed some adrenalinic racer!!
I honestly couldn't choose between them. They're both great games and some of my favorites. But one things for sure, we very well may never see new entries from either series.
I see what you're saying. wipEout is more or less in the combat racing genre. I admit weapons can be quite annoying, especially when you're in the lead. Kinda like in Mario Kart :P And yeah wipEout kinda has a more "realistic" feel because the ships sort of slide and are sluggish through turns, personally I love that handling aspect. And yes the music is fantastic along with F-Zero's. But I understand your liking of F-Zero with its higher speeds and need for quick reactions. That's why I love
i respect you for playing the rollcage games and fire bugs cause they were awesome but a the same time if you are willing to get past the high entry point for the WO games then you will find that they are some of the most amazing thrilling games ever
i think current technology could make magnetic tracks with floating 'anti-grav' vehicles like these by now, somebody should get onto it and make a new racing sport like this, bet it'll become popular and everybody wants to have a go at it.
The controls are not "touchy" - they are just sensitive. In the late game it's a godsend, otherwise it would be way to hard to steer at the speed of sound ;] Wipeout is one the most challenging, thrilling and rewarding racing franchises ever created. It's a damn shame Stodio liverpool is no more, and we probably wont see any new entry on PS4. That will be the first time since PS1 :(
yes for me its the reason I got a psp for Wipeout pure and the only game I want for the vita is WO2048 :P, if theres ever a wipeout for the PS4 I would buy it in a instant! You should check out this fan made wipeout game called slipsteam GX its awesome and right now that looks like it might be the future of the serries
Great review and i agree, pulse is hard as diamond tipped spears! One mistake and you go from 1st to last and as stated, you really do have to learn the tracks and practice practice practice!
Balthier -leading man I was leading the race for 2 laps, got hit by a missile in the last lap very close to the finish line and finished 5th -__- Fuck this game!
Well I kinda like that there's fighters that are less.... strategical? I guess that's the right word. It helps keep variety, and well they appeal more to me, like how I love Dead or Alive's fast combo style. Don't get me wrong I love other fighters such as Virtua Fighter and Tekken, I just never played them as much because I never got that great at them :P and I haven't played Blaze Blue yet. I really want to I hear they're very good games :)
That's Wipeout. It's like Dark Souls of the racing genre :] Pulse was the first Wipeout game I've played after about 10 years break (since Wipeout 2097 on PC), I got my ass kicked, I got better, I beat the game. There are very few games that give you so much satisfaction after you gold the race :]
It's actually much harder than F-Zero. It originally was a copy, but since Wipeout Pure it has been changed to be more of a F-Zero + Mario Kart type of game
It was not a good idea that this was the first Wipeout game that I played. You don't have enough space to move around and you can't just casually get into a race. You need to remember the track if you are going to have a fair chance of winning. The Wipeout game that I would also recommend is Wipeout for the PSVita. The only downside is that after the first 7-8 levels the game starts to get CRAZY hard.
I won't argue with that because F-zero GX is without a doubt an incredible game. And really wipEout's feel is kind of an acquired love, if that makes any sense. I admit, the first time i played wipEout (on the Sega Saturn), I didn't really like it. And I didn't truly become of a fan of the series until wipEout Fusion, which I played quite extensively, and it's history from there. And imho, some of the worst ranking futuristic racers includes Pulse Racer and that Jak and Daxter racing game
What i say.. i love thechnique, but it must be fast enough. Espacial DoA was my favourite 3d Beat em up, the best of all Part are the Second. The last, made for the arcade. I own every Version of DOA ((ps1, ps2, ps3, dreamcast, xbox, 360...)) Its totaly my genre. Virtua Fighter... i own some parts. There Great. Gut Technique... but i miss a little bit the fast paste gameplay with "boom" factor. As sample i see DoA with the Danger Arena. *smile*. Seeya!
I understand what you're getting at. But hey, everybody's different :) And I agree with you on the fighters, but it's probably suck at fighting games that require more technique than fast button presses :P and you're welcome :)
Ah I knew it wouldn't last, the first classic review yesterday that he done in ages, then... soon as you know it back to the shit we can find on gamespot in 2 secs if we wanted to.
I own them both. I just never realized how good the PSP version looked.
Indeed, running the PSP at 333/222mhz (cpu/gpu) will make it go 60FPS like the PS3 games. Wish the Vita Wipeout 2048 had 60fps, but with those visuals 30fps are forgivable. :)
I've started playing wip3out again, now with a namco neocon I found. Insanely fun!
So glad this review was done! I love all of the WipEout games, and this makes me happy :D
Years of Wipeout has made me a marauder of the road. Thank you Wipeout team.
That scream at the beginning is priceless.
Glad to see the PSP is still alive :)
Bought it for 4 bucks today at a flea market!
One of my favourite games :) Fury is top of my list of games to get when i get around to getting a ps3.
Its much better in terms of handling for me than Fzero, also theres lots of speed classes so you can progressively get faster as your skill level increases
More psp game rewiews please! Thanks to you I remembered I even had a psp and now I am looking for some more good PSP games to spend a few bucks on.
When you unlock the ability to import your music I recommend racing to the Tron Legacy soundtrack.
Thank you! I requested for this a long time ago!
Never knew wipeout pulse had an aphex twin track (right at the end of the vid). Most excellent.
i'd love to see my face when i saw that you have an ice silver PSP just like me

Great review of a great game, thank you for sharing!
I played the demo for hours back in the days.
Have you played WipEout Fusion for the PS2? That game has a lot of open-space multilayered levels. If you haven't played it I think you would love it!
I got WipEout 2048 a couple days ago... pretty fun game. You should review it!
Mark, any chance of an F-Zero GX review?
:O nostalgia attack! I remember when I pre ordered my original PSP... And this was the 1st game I bought after Ridge Racer! Thanks for reviewing this!
im pretty sure you might be talking about wipeout pure, not pulse. pure was a release title while pulse was released in 2008.
@@Kencho27 which is better? i just started playing pure and to me it looks visually better than pulse based on what i've seen in this review. pure just has some amazing looking backgrounds that look better than anything i saw in this video, to me at least.

yes man definitly Ive got like 100 hrs game play in that game, on phantom theres noting like it, the fury expantion pack also adds alot
My favorite racing game :D!
wipe out pure got me into the series, later got pulse and fusion on ps2, wipeout 2041 or whatever its called is one of the reasons I got a vita.
How is he playing on big screen TV ? Can you connect you PSP or is it emulators ? Know pretty much nothing about hand held systems.
F-Zero as well, it's very challenging. I grew up with Nintendo consoles also and had the first F-Zero and loved it from day one. I played the first wipeout on the ps1 it was pretty fun this is so much better then the old one.
"...by the back of your hand,..." = Top Gear reference!
would have been nice to have wipout for the wiiu. launch. considering it debut on n64
I loved this game. It was my first Wipeout game as well as first racing game on psp
How cool to se this now, I've just bought a PSP.
I love the PSP, but it usually looks awful on TV screens. How did Mark capture the footage for it to look this good?
this game was the first game i had on my psp and i spent ages playing it. its hard but fun
please do a wipeout review of fusion for the ps2, its the only wipeiut game for ps2
What will replace this since the studio closed last year.
Or i guess CGRundertow has us covered. Right on :)
In my opinion this game and Wipeout pure is the best game on the PSP system. Spent so many hours with this game lol
I'm not really into the Wipeout games but this might worth getting for it's visuals. Let me know some other good looking PSP games out there, I only have a handful of them.
Wipeout Pulse is also released on PS2 for those who don't like the small visuals on PSP.

Reminds me of extream G ! Love it
You can get A/V cables for pretty much any PSP.
The controls in the game are soooooo gooood! Plus it runs at 60fps!
I think he already reviewed the Atari Lynx if I'm not mistaken.
Such a challenging game I have it for the ps3 and Psvita!
Would have been nice to have a Wipeout for the PS4 launch.
Nice F-zero reference, you should review F-zero GX sometime, gorgeous game too, too bad it isn't much on combat like Wipeout..

I WOULD HAVE PAID MILLIONS FOR YOUR SEDUCTIVE FUTURE VOICE!
@Cody Wimbrow do you really want him to play that?
i think current technology could make magnetic tracks with floating 'anti-grav' vehicles like these by now, somebody should get onto it and make a new racing sport like this, bet it'll become popular and everybody wants to have a go at it.
Not to mention the savegame breaking bug in the PS2 version. There's no patching that post-launch :/
The controls are not "touchy" - they are just sensitive. In the late game it's a godsend, otherwise it would be way to hard to steer at the speed of sound ;]

RIP Psygnosis, I knew thee well
i have a nearly ruined copy of wipeout xl somewhere in my room
i never remember getting it myself though

Can i download it for PPSSPP? that is also an program thats like "PSP"
PPSSPP is a PSP emulator, so, if you can find the ROM, then yes, you can.
I need to have this game i cant found it
GEFORCE STYLE try and find it on the Internet, on websites like coolrom.
GEFORCE 16 Good luck playing the game on a touchscreen. Its a nightmare.
PPSSPP is available for PC as well :)

Lmfao at that old spice commercial
Wipeout 3 is still my favorite
Pulse is actually the Wipeout game I started out with, and I haven't played any other ones yet. But dammit, I need to.
just played the psone released, exept the first chapter, got all the gold medals in wipeout3.
That would be great!
Wipeout and Extreme G are indeed extremely similar.
With the TV adapter for sure :P
Hmmmmmmm.......... You said racing in the future eh? What about F - zero does it referrence you also to the future of racing?
Yaaaay! Old start format.
12th. I'm an even number so I'm special!
Anyone notice he does this thing where he makes long pauses between lines?
