Thanks Ashley for showing this video. People need to see the dangers we driving instructors face on a regular basis. There are a lot of nice, friendly and patient drivers out there. But, there are also a lot of idiot drivers like the one shown in this video. After 12 years of being a driving instructor myself, I also decided to purchase a dash cam (front and rear, Blackvue). I've found this to be more comforting (especially whilst teaching) because this is when more incidents happen. One of the biggest issues I find (and of course other driving instructors find) is drivers who tailgate. They just don't seem to understand that any learner driver may brake without warning for many different reasons. They then blame the learner... How pathetic!

People get funny when they get behind the wheel of a car, I was in a merging lane once and the driver behind me was so determined that I was NOT going to get in front of him that he actually mounted the medium strip when the lane merged. I always leave a gap for the car in front of me to merge in and expect that the car behind me will do the same. I’m guessing that’s how it’s meant to work!! But this guy seemed to take it personally, how dare I merge in front of his clearly superior car and clearly superior self!

I mean, I almost killed a wanker while taking driving lessons, the bozo straight up rushed in the middle of the street with a carton of wine in his hand from behind a parked van, making me stomp the brakes and stalling, needless to say I had quick enough reaction time to stop before hitting him and my instructor just insulted him in every way possible, that scare made me calmer behind the wheel cause I realized that even in unexpected situations I could react the proper way but nonetheless made me focus on my surroundings a bit more to try and foresee anything that might happened, avoided many crashes in the 4 years ive been driving since that close call

I was doing around 75 in the center lane and a white Juke was hogging the lane in front of me when the left hand lane was empty. I moved to the right hand lane to overtake and he immediately pulls in front of me still going the same speed. I switched back to the center lane and he cut me off again. Many people are convicted of offences based on statements and CCTV footage, there is no difference, all the evidence of a CCTV capture good enough to convict is right here, other than the actual driver of the vehicle but as a registered keeper you have to tell the police who was driving if they ask, if you don't, you "cop" for the offence - just like speed cameras. If you think about it, it's a win - win. Idiots on the road are stopped/punished for their dangerous actions and its done instilling very little police time as the footage is being sent to them.

It was during a part with no speed limit and my instructor told me to overtake the car in front of me (it was some sort of sports car 2 seats and a guy driving it with who I assume to be his GF in the passenger seat.) So I overtake the car ( he was going about 120 km/h. After overtaking I didn't slow down/ forced him to slow down . I wasn't "an obstacle" for him. I still drove faster than him). Just a few seconds after that this car shoots past me on the left side going at least 200. Man this guy had to compensate...

I've seen people tailgate really close to learners because they are angry that the learner is sticking within the speed limit and they don't want to and it must scare the hell out of them when they are new to the road.

Regarding the episode at the roundabout, I think I would give him the benefit of the doubt, he could simply be performing the same manoeuvre that you said that you had intended to perform (overtaking the slower van), albeit with somewhat less forethought and consequent less advanced planning. Even the first change of lane to the right hand lane could have possibly been just poor planning and a late decision to change lanes thinking he would make better headway in the right hand lane. However subsequently it is clear that he is attempting to obstruct your progress when he later changes to the left hand lane, even though it is contrary to the route he ultimately wishes to take. He appears to have some issue with you and is under the impression that you were desperate to pass him - I do not consider that this is evident in your driving. He is probably feeling slightly oversensitive towards your driving as he attempts justify to himself his somewhat late overtaking manoeuvre near the start of the clip. We tend to find it easier to apportion culpability for our own errors in others. A manifestation of this is our eagerness to defend our position by accusing others of being in the wrong before even being challenged as to our conduct. Take solace in that, whilst driving, he appeared to be aware of where your vehicle was, which at least shows a degree of observational skills sadly lacking in a lot of drivers. Though I suspect this may have been simply because he was obsessing about you at this particular time rather than being indicative of his normal manner of driving.

He had no way of knowing that it wasn't a learner, (not that he would care). You were able to deal with the situation as you're a professional driver, but it would have been a dangerous situation for a learner, not including the physiological effects. It might be less likely for a learner to be overtaking, but simply being in a different lane with a different direction of travel intended, as shown nearer the end, could have triggered this guy and resulted in a student being discouraged from driving. People like this need taken off the road.

That guy is so stupid! Says you had every opportunity to pass yet every time you changed lanes he cut you off! I hate people who have too much pride to let a learner driver pass (I know you weren’t a learner but you were in a driving school car) it’s almost like some people forgot once they have their opens that they were also once a LEARNER!

The thing is, people like this act like they're in a hurry but somehow have the time to block others on the road, which actually delays their journey even more.

Your absolutely right about this driver. Have you ever been a passenger when your m8, decides someone cuts him up and he goes looking for trouble. I've had a m8 do that a few times, I've basically told him if he's going to be a knob, let me out the car. My philosophy is if someone's acting strange with there driving, I would rather stay clear and they move on. There are too many hot tempered crazy people out there driving like idiots. I am sure you would pass them in a ditch later that day or in the future. What some of these knob heads forget, is the road isn't exclusively theirs and we all need to use them responsibly.

I am a chauffeur in Australia, and I will admit to overtaking learner cars occasionally where it wasn’t entirely necessary, mainly so that I can be well clear of them in case of a mistake, but to swing out to block someone like that ,no matter the circumstances, is friggin insane! That muppet shouldn’t be on the road.

I think you are both in the wrong here. Not trying to start an argument, just pointing out some things.
At 01:25 you try to overtake the juke and the van, while in an intersection. Plus if you had used perception you could of seen that less than 20 metres away was a car that was blocking the right lane turning into a side road.
"did he seriously just do that to stop me overtaking him?" - i highly doubt it as his reaction speed could be no where near that fast. just unfortunate that you both chose to do the same thing at the same time.
At 02:27 you do a little movement to the left. This could be interpreted as you trying to intimidate and make hime think you were going in to the left lane.
After he upset you at the van incident, you should of just left him alone instead of trying to overtake him, then trying to undertake him. Not very good rep for your driving school.

He changes lane while there is still a dashed white line, he was fine. It's not something I'd do just before a bend or junction but it wasn't an illegal maneuver, and pretty standard fare for town driving.

Have lots of learners in the streets near my house... and its always the very first lesson they do in this area because the streets are wide and quiet. It can be frustrating to get stuck behind a car doing 10mph but just wait and pick your moment to go by and its fine. If you take a few breaths you'll realise you've only been held up 10 seconds ... which you probably would spend at the next set of lights anyways.

  • @AndrooUK

Lol. Brilliant. You tested your hypothesis and it seemed to hold.
Then there was a nice confirmation bias by the other driver, he was somewhat 'paranoid' that you were actively trying hard to overtake him, so much that he had to protect his pride from an imagined and exaggerated slight. (Conversely, there could have easily also be confirmation bias that you assume everyone is trying to overtake you just because they don't want to be beaten by a learner car. Confirmation bias is a risk we all run.)
This seems to be an example of slight paranoia with low self confidence, hidden behind a more aggressive exterior. Possibly some elements of narcissism and personality disorder or other disordered cognitive and social functioning.
(Armchair psychology and psychiatry is great.)

It's people like this who don't deserve to be on the road. That's bad enough for normal drivers, but imagine if there was a learner driver in control of the car? He could have caused a serious accident, and what's he going to tell the police? The other car tried to overtake me so I deliberately moved in front of them because they don't deserve to overtake me - oh and also I have a small willy.

I met this kind of driver a few times, not that bad though while I was driving with 'L' signs on car. The drivers hated to stay behind me and had to overtaken my car on the one lane road with on coming traffic though I was driving with normal speed. Sometimes, I just kept left and let it do, the risk was his/hers, i was in safe situation. Sometimes, I kept in the middle of the road and didn't let it overtaken when the driver really pushed to hard / close to my car.
