- In this video tutorial I am working on a toilet that takes a little extra effort and is hard to push on the flush handle. It still works, but is a bit annoying. I show you how to fix this very easily and you can do it yourself and save some money in the process. I am working on a Mansfield type or brand toilet that uses this type of flush valve system.

I'm a senior citizen who was putting up with a hard to push toilet handle. For over a year I lifted the water tank cover and pulled the handle shaft by hand. I was tired of breaking handles and their cost. With your video I was able to fix the problem. It pays to read the instructions. The ring needs to be placed on the first groove. I had pushed the ring all the way down and it wouldn't hold water in the tank. Much appreciated.
That's excellent! I'm so glad I could help... 😀
I’m glad I found this video…this was so helpful
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the feedback... 😀
Thank you
Best Advice Ever!!! I didn’t find any info on this issue anywhere. You are the only one to identify what our problem was. I felt so smart just going in and buying a flush valve gasket. Can’t believe how a beat-up gasket can make a toilet unfunctional (in polite society). Bravo! Thank you!
TYSM for the super thanks! I really appreciate that.... Im so glad I could help you fix your toilet... I had one like this recently that wasn't sticking like this one was, it was constantly leaking past the flapper... I guess they present different symptoms depending how bad they've deteriorated....
Thank you. The fix suggested here worked great. $4 gasket did the trick and only took 10 min.
Nice work! You're welcome.. 😀
I've fixed different parts of my toilets over the years but couldn't figure out what was going on this time until I found your channel - new subscriber!! 👍💕
That's awesome! TYSM... I'm glad I could help.
I'm only familiar with the old fill tube and flapper assemblies. When I saw this type of valve set up in our new toilet I did not know how to service it. I had no idea what was causing the handle to stick. Wow. What an easy fix. I ordered the yellow valve seals per your recommendation and man it works like a charm. Thank you my friend. Between this video and your video on how to fix a bathroom vent fan, you have really come through in the clutch!
Awesome... I'm so glad to help and glad you got everything going again.. Thank you!
Thank you so much! You showed and explained everything clearly so I could be sure this was the type of toilet I had and I was able to swap the valve seals and fix it.
(Mentioning in case this happens to others who also have no other experience to draw on) I was afraid I’d done something wrong or gotten the wrong cable seal at first, when (after everything was set up again) there was a tiny but distinct trickle sound after the tank filled that disappeared if I pressed on the black handle, indicating I didn’t have a full seal at the bottom. But it turns out that I must’ve not had the valve seal completely its groove-I pulled it up and put it down again, running my fingers along the edge to make sure it felt like it was evenly sitting, then put everything back together again-success! Now I can be prepared if this issue pops up with the other toilets in the house!
You're welcome! Very glad I could help... Glad you were able to get things going again. 😀
Thank you! I've been living with this issue since moving into my apartment months ago. My landlord didn't understand and replaced the arm thing. Then they let a bunch of ppl go and haven't been able to fix it so finally I decided to... with your help!!
That's awesome! SO glad I was able to help... 😊
Quick and simple thanks. I’m a lady that likes to save money and do things myself.
Excellent! So glad I could help... 😀
Ok! THANK YOU!!! I m on my second handle and it just dawned on me that there’s something inside the tank making it hard to flush. I think this is it!!!! Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!!
thank you, this solved my problem! at first, the water kept going down because the valve wasn't put on correctly, but after i fixed that, my toilet runs perfectly!
That's awesome! So glad I could help you... 😀
Thanks. My wife and I have broken four toilet handles trying to force it down. I'm going to replace that seal now!
Awesome! So glad I could help. The seal should take care of it.
Exactly what I needed to know... thanks!
Awesome! You're welcome...
An excellent quick fix video! Thanks!!!!
Glad it helped! You're welcome... 😊
It works!! Thanks again!! Appreciated your assistance!!😊
Excellent! You're welcome. 😀
Thank you!!! Just successfully made the repair!
Excellent! So glad I could help... 😊😊
G.B.Stein said “ silent gratitude isn’t much good to anyone.” - with that I say thank you sir .
TYSM!
You kept me from calling a plumber 😭 THANK YOU!!
That's awesome! You're welcome...
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video, it never fails when I turn the water supply off. There’s a drip after I turn it back on. Do you have a video on how to fix that thanks.
HI, I don' have a video for that. But Ive ran into that before. Sometimes you can tighten the nut behind the actual shut off part that you turn. Make sure and back it up with a crescent wrench on the valve body somewhere and try to see if you can get an 1/8 of a turn on the nut. This will usually take care of that.
Thank you so much. Now it feels weird not having to push so hard 😂😂😂
Awesome! So glad to help... 😊
Great vid & easy fix. Thank you!
You're welcome and thanks for the great feedback!
What is a vid?
Thank you for helpful information
So nice of you.... You're welcome... 😀
I am going to try this. I just put a new toilet in the basement and then realized the upstairs was hard to flush. Our 4yr old has a hard time flushing. Thanks
Excellent! Hope it works easy for you... 😀
Thanks for this video. The flushing lever snapped so I had to replace it. Now when I flush it, the handle doesn’t go back up on its own, I’ve to tap it up myself else the water keeps draining. Why isn’t it going back up on its own?
HI... without seeing it it's hard to say. Does the lever move freely on it's own? Does your unit have a chain attached to the handle that has to much slack?
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel it’s with a funnel and no chain. Was able to fix it by less tightening the screw behind the flush handle. Hoping it stays fine now.
Great! I suspected it could be something like that...
Thanks for your help
You're welcome!
Thanks for the info!
You bet!
Very helpful thanks 😊
You're welcome 😊
Hey, thanks for the video! I hope this solves my issue and I can actually do it myself.
Side note: I ❤ my Tushy! #iykyk
You're welcome! I hope you're able to get it going very easy... 😊
I’ve done the same steps as you, but now the new valve doesn’t have a good seal. Water keeps leaking through and then gets filled every 15 seconds
Make sure you have the right replacement part... make sure the replacement washer is seated in it's groove properly. You might have to take it back apart to check that. Make sure you clean the sealing surface of the part that goes up and down.. That's about all it could be if you're working with the same style as I have in the video here..
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel Yes it turns out my valve wasn’t seated properly on one side. After I put the valve on again it works perfectly. Thank you so much
Awesome! So glad I could help... 😀@@HamzaKhan-zp8uc
Help! I removed the old gasket it was thick and crusty and breaking apart BUT after I replaced it I saw a grey cloud and now the tank does not fill up and the toilet keeps running. What should I do?
Yikes! Will be difficult to say without being able to see it.... IS the tank filling up at all? Or it it just running but won't fill up...
I saw another video which solved it. Apparently there are two grooves for the gasket to sit in. I had pushed it too far down so I pulled it up into the first groove and it was sealing fine. Thanks for replying!
@@martialarts151Thanks for the comment and I had the same problem and read your comment and saw the upper groove and is now working good.
I went to the hardware store and couldn't find the part What would be the part on Amazon?
HI... Depends on which store.. I went to Lowes recently looking for the Mansfield parts and they didn't have anything... Home Depot did... Amazon definitely has those too...
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel You have the best video on this topic. What is the name of the part I could search on Amazon?
Worked for me. Lever was completely stuck.
That's excellent!
you mustve left out some sort of steps or details because ive redone this 6 times over the last 2 days and it wont seal, it just keeps leaking water and the toilet keeps running
I actually didn't. But I have run into that before. If you take the piston/ plunger (whatever you call it) back out and reseat the red washer, it should solve the problem. It might not be in it's groove all the way around... 😀
i ended up buying a whole new piston/plunger and that worked
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel
Very good! Glad you got it going again... 😀
What market (geographically speaking) do you service?
Hello, I actually don't run service calls. Thanks.
What is the science behind why the seal makes it hard to flush?
Good question! The answer I give would probably be mumbo jumbo! So I'll spare you that... 😂
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel It would seem if anything the rubber seal would get looser and leak rather than get tougher to pull?
@@Capecodham IKR... it would seem that way, but it does the opposite! Probably to a point. Once it deteriorates even further it probably would just leak through..
Can't figure out how a seal could make it hard to flush.
I know what you're saying, but it certainly does!
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel Thanks
You're welcome!@@ricktempleton3415
My guess is the suction water pressure that is created. The old seal even looks like it is formed to created water tight seal.
Why exactly is the seal the culprit?
HI, I don't have a scientific explanation! Whatever I said would just be a guess.... 😁😁
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel It's OK. I got it fixed. Thanks to your videos.:)
Thank you!
