  • If I ask you who the smartest person to ever live on Earth was, you'll probably name Isaac Newton or Stephen Hawking or some other outstanding scientist. But what if I tell you there was someone really smart but no one's really heard about him? He was a child prodigy and an exceptional mathematician. Why didn't he get rich or famous?

Sounds like my Dad when he was young. Reading the newspaper and understanding it at 2. He had a vocabulary that was never ending. At 3 when an old lawyer stopped everyday to buy vegetables and asked him what he was reading. When my Dad told him the old man said "My boy you would make a fine lawyer one day" patting him on the head. My Dad went to U of Michigan Law School and after his law career he became Circuit Court Judge. He lived to be 99.

I'm impressed, I lived next-door to a judge named Maurice Charles in Markham, Ontario Canada. He sold the house to a lawyer with about 100 times the net worth Maurice had. His wife is also a lawyer. Streets in Markham were named after the wife.

Carol Ferguson Was your dad also worshipped by his mother or parents?!? My father was an early wind turbine pioneer. He founded the oldest organization for renewable energy in the EU, long before renewable energy became mainstrream. He built among other things some of the earliest modern windturbines, and anticipated the dangers of climate change, nuclear power, and extreme poverty of the third World countries. However he was also narcissist, always needed to be the center of attention, and a negligent father, who could not accept his children to have healthy relations with friends and women that he didn't have himself. He also lectured people in things that he didn't know anything about.

My friend who was very smart, had a very gifted child. She encouraged her mentally and by the age of 5 yrs could see that the child was unpopular with class mates and teachers. So she stopped any academic pursue and living in a rural community there was nothing on offer anyway. She just encouraged her daughter at home and endeavored to teach the child social skills. It was hard as the child had high functioning Asperger. With great effort the child was encouraged in social clubs and sports, like social swim club.
20 yrs down the track this girl has grown up and managed to have a happy family and works in financial world and is doing very well. I admire my friend for the effort and recognition of what was needed, it wasn't easy.

This reminds me of Tesla, who introduced ac electricity to the world, yet was always overshadowed by Edison his former boss and later adversary, because the latter was a ruthless businessman but Tesla was more of a humanitarian who became a recluse and died in penury.

@Zane Grey I think Edison was an opportunist with above average intelligence 🤔 . He was money 💰 driven and Tesla had no love for money which was probably why he didn't look to profit from his work. If Tesla had had a bit more love of the coin and worked on the production and profit 📈 aspect of invention he'd have put Edison in the shade. I've read somewhere Tesla financed Edisons electricity production using Teslas discovery of the alternating current rather than Edisons belief he'd discovered the secret of viable electricity production using direct current. Didn't he Edison build massive stations for production of electricity which were not sustainable. Whereas Tesla's Alternating Current was a viable option. Tesla died alone in a Hotel. The social aspect of his personality was lacking like Sir William in this story. Parents who work in jobs and leave their children to stew are negligent in the core aspects of parenting which is a feeling of security that a child needs.

He did research for the navy at the age of 16 .then worked at Sears in a research lab with two military suits standing over him taking everything that he developed. He became very frustrated with this and decided to retire in his late 20s. From that point on he raised his family while helping people improving versus things in their life's. If you look at some of the brightest minds, you'll see that they are very much in a lower state of mind because of this. It would be incredibly difficult for him to communicate with the average person because of how different he is, hence them being more likely to be depressed. You become the black sheep because you're seen as odd to normal people and you're ostracized. The average person wants to feel powerful or wanted (See Nietzsche); they don't want to change or improve the world in any meaningful way because they can't, so they take it out on people with potential. It has become easier now with computers without the need to get out to form connections and we should be grateful despite its obvious downsides.

Unfortunately, a person at this level of thinking feels lonely because there is no one who can fully understand what he wants to share. Sharing thoughts and deeds is in human nature and this satisfaction is denied to geniuses unless they meet someone at their level. This guy had no chance to find his equal. When you have a high IQ, you crave to meet someone smarter than you to stimulate your brain. Imagine a chess champion condemned to playing with beginners. Not much fun, is it?

Well there's many factors like the internet, smartphones, AI, Smart Cars, foods and vitamins they didnt have back then. There's literally hundreds of resources they didn't have. Well as a child, I heard that I had an IQ of 140 and that I was smart .Then a friend told me he had an IQ over 200 so he was smarter. I did not know how IQs were figured so I assumed he must be that smart.
Then I took an IQ test that was given on the TV. There were 100 people there, scientists, Doctors, Teachers to name a few of the people. Again it said I had an IQ of 140, but out of the 100 people taking the test, I outscored all of them.
Keep in mind an IQ of 100 is the average IQ. Just mathematically, it is not very possible. There was a lady a few years ago claiming to have an IQ of 210. She wrote books and gave lectures. Unfortunately she did not have the IQ she claimed.
To be honest, I still do not know how IQ scores are computed, I am dubious of anyone saying they have an IQ over 200.

IMO, the WISEST person I have read about would be Epicurus (341-270 BC). He was interested in BEING HAPPY, not rich or famous. William Sidis might have lived a happy life if he had read about Epicureanism. Also, living relatively stress free might have added a few happy years to his life. I wish I had learned Epicureanism about 70 years ago! Oh well, it's never too late to change (I hope).

Well, you can't test Socrates, as he was opposed to the idea of writing down ideas, instead being a conversationalist -- attaining a "disciplined conversation".
He also believed it is "weakening the necessity and power of memory, and for allowing the pretense of understanding, rather than true understanding."
"It is a discourse that is written down, with knowledge, in the soul of the listener; it can defend itself, and it knows for whom it should speak and for whom it should remain silent."
"He [Socrates] worried that reliance on writing would erode memory (it has!), but also, and maybe more importantly, that reading would mislead students to think that they had knowledge, when they only had data."
"When told that the Oracle of Delphi had revealed to one of his friends that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens, he responded not by boasting or celebrating, but by trying to prove the Oracle wrong."
Socrates was truly an incredible man. I'll see about Epicurus also.

Nikola Tesla was such a man. Einstein was once asked what it was like to be the smartest man on the planet, he replied ask Tesla. Tesla is credited with the discovery of many of the things we take for granted today.
marconi is credited with discovering radio. It was actually who made the breakthrough, but he let the patent expire and Marconi bought it.
A/C electricity. Tesla developed A/C electricity. Edison wanted D/C electricity but was having problems with it. He offered to pay Tesla to solve the problem. Tesla told Edison it will never work. Edison went on a campaign to discredit Tesla.
Tesla was supported by Edison and J P Morgan for a while. Tesla found a way of getting free electricity from the Earth for free. J P Morgan and Eddison realised this would cost them millions of Dollars, and set about ruining him. He died alone and Peniless in his hotel room. When his body was found his safe was open. All his documents were impounded by the FBI.

My father would have absolutely none of it. He had believed putting me in that position would stunt, if not destroy any semblance of a social life; I'd be smart, sure, but I'd have no way to relate to anyone. He also thought I'd be used. (He was right) So, I went through school like anyone my age. If we were learning a subject I liked or was interested in, I'd destroy the curve (sorry guys) On other things I was ambivalent, I did just enough to pass; my thoughts elsewhere. I was asked more than once how smart I was, and my answer has always been the same; "as smart as I needed to be". Don't get me wrong, being really, really (one more) really smart has its advantages, it can also be very lonely. Learning early doesn't give friendly childhood joy ... just pressure and disappointment 😞 . Playing Chinese whisper and 21 with friends and pantsetting people is much better for us
