PLEASE KEEP IN MIND when you are watching my videos: I am showing you the least expensive, quickest "backyard" methods for repairing or servicing your lawnmower. Replacing all components such as gaskets and fuel lines is always recommended when rebuilding or repairing equipment. With these videos I hope you are able to fix and repair your lawnmower yourself with minimal parts, knowledge and tools. Thank you for watching!
Jeff, I've watched 10 videos relating to fuel solenoid problems and yours is the only one from all those watched that cut straight to point without a whole lot of bullshit. Thank You.
lol! I try to limit the BS
exactly!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff, great video! I volunteer at our church to mow the 11,000 square feet lawn. The mower I've used the last 6 years suddenly wouldn't start. I looked for the obvious to no success. Called four shops and no one wanted to work on it. After watching your video and about 7 minutes of work the little mower that could... did! Thanks to you and UA-cam University.
Nice work. Thanks for watching!
Helpful hint folks. Once you clean the solenoid connect the wire back and turn the key while you watch the solenoid. If it does it's job you will SEE it work rather than reinstalling and hoping. Hope it helps y'all. Blessing to all.
What did you clean it with
@@kathleenhamm2040 carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner works
I thought he would do that since he's a "machanic"
Thanks for that tip! Mine didn’t work. After a few minutes I looked to see if it had power, and nope it didn’t! That’s why mine quit working. I did put a bolt in bottom of fuel bowl and it started right up. Going to chase the bad power spot tomorrow and put solenoid back in and all will be good again.
Went to mow my lawn before work got about 4 passes and it shut down. Been at work 5 hours and finally came across your video. Almost Same mower and all can't wait to get outta here and see if this is the issue....thank you for the straight to the point video
Holy shit you know how hard it is to find a video like the one you made Thank you now I no what I must you to fix my lawnmower
My friend narrowed down most everything he could think of for his mower, but the problem you described here was EXACTLY his problem! You are awesome! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks a ton Jeff. Took my fuel solenoid off, sprayed it with some carb and choke cleaner and it fired right up. Again can thank you enough!!
This video not only saved me time and money, it saved a machine that holds great sentimental value to me. Thanks for posting
Great to hear!
This was the fix for my 3 yr old Troybuilt Pony lawn "tractor" I even had to replace the leads to the fuel solenoid. I had made 2 laps around my yard mowing when the motor died then wouldn't restart acted like it wasn't getting any fuel at all. Thank you!
Man haven't checked it yet but thats exactly what my mower was doing. Have high hopes this is it. Put in new gas, new plugs, air filter looks perfect. Will crank all day and sounds just like this one so excited to go home and try this
Very much appreciate the video. Well done, well explained, and saved me time and money for a mechanic.
Thank you for showing that I have one just like it and has same issue and I am sure you will save my days of headache, you made a good video, again thank you for sharing these troubles.
Thanks for the video, my mower had been running a little rough and I could tell it was getting too much fuel. I did what you said here and now it's running better than it has in a long time!
Glad it helped
I think this is my problem...sincerely appreciate this
This fixed my issue thanks! Been stumped all day why it would start on starter fluid and die out right away. Thought it was bad gas or fuel filter, both of which were old, but after replacing the gas and filter still no dice. I cleaned out the fuel shut off solenoid in about 2 minutes and was back up and running. My lawn and my wife thank you!
PS for anyone reading this you don't need to go get a special fuel hose clamp for this since it's gravity feed you can just pull it off the carb, put thumb over it, and rig it up so the end is resting above the gas tank, and it won't flow out. Don't smoke while doing this. I simply hung it on a sturdy wire near the dash. Just be careful nothing knocks it loose or use a zip tie. Also I just sprayed starter fluid in there and worked it up and down... What I had next to me. Worked fine. No special lube or cleaner or anything needed.
this was my problem thank you
Great catch Jeff!👍👍
Okay off to try this!
Good info. I'm going to check my Craftsman rider for this issue. Thanks.
Good info. My B&S is doing the same thing...usually starts right up. Ran the battery down expecting it to start (for the first time this summer) any second. Will take the shutoff solenoid off for a cleaning.
Thanks for the video. That's exactly what my problem was. Such an easy fix!
This video was so helpful now my zero turn is running. Thanks again
🙌 This was EXACTLY what I needed to get my mower running!!!!!!!! I replaced the gas, oil, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter. All things that were needed. And it has a new battery, but it still wouldn't stay running. Now it's running great!!!! Thanks for the video!!!!
Glad it helped!
The exact video I needed and perfect instructions. Thank you for saving my Saturday, I was half way done with mowing and thought I was in for a big repair, luckily 5 minutes later it’s fixed. Much appreciated
Glad it helped! Good job
You're the man , that was my problem thanks
Fixed my problem exactly. Thank you!
good job, l will check my ride on.
Worked like a charm thanks
Glad it helped
Just wanted to say thank you, we had tried everything to get our mower to run without any luck just lots of wasted time and energy. I watched your video and showed it to my husband. We did exactly what you showed and it cranks up and runs like new. THANKS
EXCELLENT! good job
I was so tired of paying someone to come out every year to do exactly this. I watched him the last time but he didn’t explain anything, of course. Now with watching both of you & your explanation I have been able to save my money on a house call & fix it up myself. Thank you for this video.
good to hear, Thanks
Had this same problem with a John Deere D110. Cleaned it like you did and it started right up! Thanks a lot for the help!
Same thing with my JD 140
Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Its night here plan to try it in the morning. I believe this will work. Thanks God Bless You Sir.
Great Tip...Worked like a charm...Thank you for the experise!
Great video thanks jeff
Thank you my problem is solved you are the greatest
This what it was on my DR brush Cutter, It started right up, THANK YOU JEFF.
good to hear!
Thanks for the video! This helped out!
My engine was actually cranking and running for a little while then it would shut off. I did this and it fixed it. Thanks.
When my engine dies I usually replace the fuel pump and fuel filter and it works, but this time it didn't. I then cleaned the electrical connection and it worked for a day. I'll try this fix now, plus it's a way to clean the bowl I guess.
Thanks for video, solved my problem.
Thanks. That solved the problem.
Thanks! I have the same Mower with the Same problem. Wow👍
Going to give this a shot on my Aren's with a Briggs and Stratton motor. I have the same problem, only starts cold with stater fluid and once warmed up its fine to restart.
I had this problem last year and ordered one from MTD. Turns out, the connection plug would go in either way, so it does matter. The plunger was working reverse to the key. Flipped the connection around and fix it. I started using ethanol free gas to keep it from gumming up again. Great video.
I don't see how that's even possible
I can truthfully say that your video is a real "gas". Thanks. You gave me something else to check on my "non start" riding lawn mower. I have seen comments re poorly made carbs on the market.
Glad to help
Great stuff thanks
My X320 was hard starting but if you put some fuel in the carb (Kawasaki 22 HP) It would start and then run.
Took carb off twice, blew back fuel line from pump, new filter, new pump tested Solenoid on spare battery, worked fine.
Multimeter showed 12.6vdc at battery but the hot lead at the solenoid was only 10 vdc. Traced solenoid wire back through 3 connectors and at the 12 pin connector near the ignition switch, one of the 3 yellow wires only had 10v.
Sprayed it with Brakleen, (very tiny connectors) and wiped the male pins clean. Turned on the key and heard the click.
I expect that after dumping some fuel in the carb that it started and produced enough running voltage to keep the solenoid open. Runs great now and I have a spare fuel pump! It is 10 years old, 244 hours and does a beautiful job. Completely different deck suspension. Looking for 2 - 8" JD chrome hubcaps.
Well done thx you helped me.
Very helpful video. 🙂
Big thumbs up too!
Thank you!
Great video and explanation!
thanks SnapperKC
Fuel selinoid.. Briggs and Stratton
Can’t wait to get mine..👍
There’s a great work around
Great!! Thumps up. Bravo
Very helpful
Glad it helped
Good video. I'll try it on my Craftsman tomorrow.
Thanks for that info!!! Cheers!!!
Thanks for watching friend!
Sweet. Great video
Thanks!
I'll have to try this
Awesome video I had the same problem with the same part is all gummed up and not clicking you saved my day thank you.
Great to hear!
Great video, exactly what I was looking for,. Thank's man for sharing this with us
Thanks - having the same problem with my churches John Deer riding mower . I'll check this out on it too , has a fuel pump also . But will check this ( fuel solenoid out first ) and then ( the fuel pump second ) . Guys like you that really help the little guys out here 😉👍
Update : put on a new carburetor on the 21 HP John Deere , fixed it - but had too use the old fuel solenoid . Somebody before me unwired the fuel solenoid and I didn't know it . You just don't know when you work on something what somebody else has already done too it . Anyway done job 👍
Dude you fixed my mower thank you so much ! frustrated after 3 days of working on it!!!!
Great to hear!
Thank so much
Thank You
thanks
good job
Thank you!
Mr. Jeff, your awesome sir🙋, quick fix so cool🙌 autumn is my favorite tunes sir👍👍👍👍👍👍

Mine is doing the same thing I'm going to try it and I will let you know thanks for the video
It was a craftsman dsl3500 had been sitting outside for 3 years.changed air filter, belt, battery, cleaned solenoid.runs like new
Cheers legend !!
Thanks friend! Cheers to you too
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Very helpful.good job bro.copied you fired right up
Thanks for the tips. in my case the electrical connector was corroded. But cleaned the plunger also. Never started so easy in a long time
Glad it helped
Exactly what happened to both of mine.
thank you for the video.
You're welcome
Very Good!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Mine ran fine and I shut it off to move some things and it wouldn't start. Just spun and never started. I felt of the solenoid and turn the key on and felt nothing or heard anything. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and hit the key and boom, running. Couple days later I was mowing and it just quit. Remembering this video I took a screwdriver and tapped on the solenoid and it started. This morning I pulled the solenoid and flushed it out with brake clean and afterwards it was much freer moving.
a friend gave me a troybuilt 18 hp mower because he always had trouble getting it to start , i unscrewed that very same solenoid , took it to my bench grinder and ground the tip off it put it back on the mower and never had another problem with it starting , took 6-7 minutes start to finish to fix it haha
thx man
That was my problem. Cleaned it and she's running like a sewing machine. Thanks for the video.
A "Jeff's Little Engine Service" Sunday marathon.........WoooooHoooooo!!!!!
lol! Thanks for watching friend!
thanks man!!!!!!!!
Great video. Best I have seen. Thank you!!!!
Thanks friend. Glad it was helpful
Nice..👍👍👍👍👍👍
Another symptom is hard to crank like this. If your mower starts out like this one was doing but eventually cranks it can be the same issue. Once running it's fine but just a pain to crank. My solenoid was bad and was frozen in position. The plunger was halfway so it was getting fuel just took 10-15 seconds to crank over. I replaced it and the needle valve and it's fine. My needle valve tip was slightly bent. As already stated, you can cut the plunger off the solenoid and it will run but if it has a gravity fed fuel tank you need to add a shutoff valve because if you dont and the needle valve goes bad then the gas can flood the crankcase
I have learned so much watching your videos. I love them!! Keep up the awesome work!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks buddy
No problem 👍
You must be holding your mouth right I've never had it that easy good johb
What was wrong with mine. It was actually flooding the mower. Tapped it couple times with my pocket knife herd it click. Worked key back and forth till it was freed up. Mower fired right up. Thank you sir!
I want to go and fix mine now
I cleaned the electrical connection and it started right up, but then died the next day. Turns out the connector plug is bad, but the John Deere place didn't even sell the connector, so had to solder the wires on. I will be ordering a new connector. I did clean the solenoid up some when I had it out and it was sticking a little. But Deere wanted $115. for it and it didn't even come with connectors.
i have seen the rubber tip come loose and shut off the fuel flow thru the main jet while mowing. i just removed the tip and put a manual shut off valve in the fuel line
GREAT video my friend!!! thanx so much for your genius..i have the same pos poulan pro mower....1 of my best tho..lol
Thanks for watching!
Giving away my age but i don't grind a wrench to fit just dug out my tappet wrenches, they work great.
He's a lawn mower guy, probably does not have those wrenches. Like you, though, I have some.
@@jeffryblackmon4846 Yup, same here I have a set of Dad's old tappet wrenches, he was a diesel mechanic.
@@Don_ECHOguy I'm not aware of what happened to my father's tools after he died. We lived in 2 different states. I did inherit his lathe which he got from his dad. It's about my age or so- mid 70s.
make one out of 1/8 flat stock
this is as close to a zen fix it vid as any I have ever seen. at each point you chose to extend the ability to diagnose, and repair.. Like finding the new part along with your video. Thanks
Glad it helped
I got the same issue, engine turns over but won't start. Turns out I had the fuel filter backwards. Saw in your video that the broadest cap goes at the bottom. It started right away. Thanks.
Jeff thanks for the video. My wrench wont fit in there so I'll have to find something to grind it down as well.
What you need is a thin made half inch or 13 mm wrench.. They sell a thin body wrench.
@@michaelhall4865 yep, I bought one online and changed out the fuel solenoid the day it arrived. All good, thank you.
I had an obvious fuel shutoff solenoid problem. Mower quit while mowing. Tried restarting, etc then saw smoke coming from under hood. Fuel solenoid was smoking. Jerked wires off. Got another solenoid with wire harness and all was well..
My Poulan Pro is doing this exactly. I'll try replacing the solenoid and see if that does it. Thanks.
Did u replace the solenoid and did it start back up?..
@@hawk8087 It worked fine until I struck a large hidden tree root. Now it's defunct. Needs a new engine or rebuild.
Great job Jeff: I just had the same thing on a 17.5 Kawasaki. Thanks for the video's.
Thanks Waterman one
You mention to add a fuel shut off . I don't trust them if gas gets in to the engine if your lucky it will sit on the piston and hydro lock if your not lucky it go past the piston and start an blow to engine when I see that I always check the oil for gas sniff test
