even through UA-cam compression the difference is day and night, before and after. They probably paid 5$ for the controller, the COGS is probably $30 so they want to pocket $200 without efforts.
Come on, Grid Studio. You really can't be making false claims like that. Did you really think Madlittlepixel wasn't going to try cleaning the controller after you claimed the filth couldn't be removed?
No for that price all your complaints were totally fair. The graphic design on the background is nice, and the concept is good. The execution of everything else is poor. Even $50 would be a stretch - if it was cleaned up and well done, maybe I'd go up to $100.
yeah, seeing the glue holding down some of the pieces just looks janky and unprofessional especially at the price they're selling it for. Overall I like the idea but yeah, the execution needs some improvement. But even then...$240? Seems overpriced.
I cleaned controllers at a mom and mom retro game shop for years and when I watched the original video I knew right away that no one attempted to clean this. Bonus point for showing people good techniques to clean their controllers as well.
I think we watch your videos because you are always honest. You don’t allow companies persuade your reviews in any way. This controller is an embarrassment and at that insane price they should be embarrassed. Good for you for showing us because I’d be furious if I paid 230$ for this.

They should give buyers choices : 1. Clean (Free) 2. Dirty and Germs ($50) 3. Scratches ($50) 4. 2 & 3 ($75 - SAVINGS!) Actually... even the pics of the N64 controller on their website is not so clean... except for the close up on the Nintendo logo above the thumbstick... it was "edited"... which is VERY clear. They can do better...
Not gonna lie; for a very long time now, I've been on the fence about getting this company's display for the iPhone SE, due to being such an Apple hardware enthusiast. And with the company celebrating an anniversary, I believe, a bunch of their stuff is on sale. Was closer than ever to making a purchase. So my sincerest gratitude for saving me a couple hundred dollars.
Absolutely without a doubt not being too harsh. Dirt/grime are not remotely the same as scratches/scuffs (which themselves can be improved with plastic polish like Novus to the point of looking great in a frame for viewing) and the sloppy glue job and dirty cardboard backing is fully on them. If it were a cheaper product, I definitely wouldn't be so critical, but at that high a price, it's classifying itself a a boutique item. Personally, I'd use a DIY kit instead; premade kits are significantly cheaper (eg./ Xeart kits) where you bring your own device and attach the pieces yourself. Or if you're adventurous, print any of the free art templates out there and throw it in a cheap art store frame.
Hopefully they realize that they need to put a process in place that VERIFIES cleaning of their products prior to being framed. The person who framed that saw how dirty that was. A good bit of their products that I have seen do not show up with that much cleaning needing to be done though.
What really blows my mind is that THEY KNEW this was a freebie - promo item gifted to Ron for the purpose of getting their name and product out to all this channel's viewers and yet they couldnt be bothered to pick the best looking one they had on hand or at least have another set of eyes double-check the one they selected BEFORE shipping it out. There is a lot to be said about that, none of it good. Hope they did learn something from this experience because Ron was right in his original assessment.
I am glad they didn't hand pick a good one for me. I am firmly against special reviewer only versions or the best one they got type of thing as it can misrepresent what the paying customers actually get and if I notice thats whats going on I will call them out as well on it.
When you send a product to be reviewed while sending out an item that probably has a variant of Covid living on it from not being cleaned, it is what is. Scratches I understand. But that bad boy was not cleaned.
And knowing you're sending it to a UA-cam Creator for review...you'd THINK they'd make sure the items was as clean as in pristine condition as possible. That's just lazy.
I'm sure I saw this printable art somewhere free on the web, so you can do it yourself with a cheap shadowbox from Hobby Lobby or Michael's or whatever.
That email lied, there is no way that thing was cleaned as the photos you shared in the last video and this video just proves the company lied. Oversight or not, no one should have to clean anything but use the product as intended, I personally would request a refund and keep the controller since one had to put in time to do a job the company prides itself on doing.
To me it's a night and day difference mate, great job, having done this myself to retro controllers i hope the company stop their bs and actually clean up. It's simple to do and not massively time consuming. Great vid.
I was wondering how'd they'd feel 😔 😯 after finishing the video yeah that wasn't cleaned and for its price that's really negligent and while I wanted to believe that letter as scratches gives the item a historical value (like war time use and damage of a weapon), they really should've done better.
That is nasty! How someone could sell that is beyond me. They want to sell this and say the "Filthy Germs and Grime" shows the history of the product. If I want a dirty scummy controller, I will go on Ebay and pay way less than that. That is probably where they got it from. If I were you, I'd send them an email back requesting a pre-paid return shipping label to take their CRAP back!
WOW....... There is no way they did ANY basic cleaning on that. I call BS on them saying they cleaned it before production. Great video on calling out this BS. Hope more people see this before dropping that kind of cash on one. You can easily make one yourself for under $30 tbh
I love that you are super honest in this, I do clean controllers and consoles of multiple variants I can tell you most of the time a small toothbrush and some alcohol will do the trick but I have even gone as far as putting them in a dishwasher that works never had anything get damaged but I tell you if you had a ultrasonic cleaner that would do a supreme job I also feel like they could have used screws instead of glue seeing how screws screw into the top cover but whatever I guess but yeah I like that you called them out on their bullshit!
Nice response to them! Either it's BS that they cleaned it, or worse, they did clean it and that is considered acceptable. Maybe it was missed, but like someone mentioned, if you are sending a product for review, make it the best it can be. Cool idea, but not someone that is getting my money. As always, wish more YT channels were like this.
To not even do what seems to be basic level cleaning is un-acceptable at this price point. No type of care was given to this it seems. It’s also pretty telling that you are somewhat an influencer/reviewer. So, I’d imagine that they would send you something with the upmost QA on it. It would look 100% better with some toothbrush and Q tip work with some isopropyl.
If you look at the website picture the Control Pad shows the same crud that builds up between the shell seam. Also the third picture in the N64 shows gunk in the button holes
Before and after pictures CLEARLY show you proved your point exactly! Unless the company thought that crust, junk, and disease are considered ummm art...for that price you paid..it’s the extra touch that differentiates art from common trash. I’d buy a controller off of eBay..clean and sanitize it..call it video player art..great videos..I’m glad I found your channel
No way in hell that thing was cleaned for even a minute before they framed it. That was one of the stankiest N64 controllers I've ever seen in my life.
For the price I'd expect them to repaint the case. A simple primer and similar grey colour air brushed on. After it's cleaned. I think it's nicely displayed. But the price is insane.
$230 for something I could make with stuff from a Goodwill and a Walmart. Maybe at least consider using the controller screws and some hardware to mount the shell. A crafty housewife could’ve delivered higher quality at a lower price.
I've been tempted to ask for these as Christmas / Birthday gifts, but the price has been slightly off-putting. Seeing this, I don't think I will ask for any more. I have dismantled many controllers over the years so the moment I saw it I recognized just how easily that stuff can be cleaned. Thank you for the follow up!
This is absolutely ridiculous that a company charges as much as they charge for a product with so much dirt encrusted.. This shows a total lack of zeal and care with the product being sold as it is done by countless companies that only think about taking money from consumers. Don't even get me started on the justification they emailed. Pathetic.
I thought about ordering something from them even though I have the ability to make it myself. Now I think I'm going to pass and just make it myself. They charge too much for starters and if this is how they "clean" the item before framing... Yikes.
Seriously you made an absolutely NOTICEABLE improvment !!! Good Job .... I ALSO understand the "previously heavy used" excuse ... BUTTTTT Part of the novelty of this whole thing is that the parts are cleaned being as their new "purpose" is to be observed, not used again. I'm normally not OCD inclined but this is ABSOLUTELY a valid complaint. Again, fantastic job on fixing what I would call a product "fault".
I'm surprised they had the audacity to say they cleaned the item after watching the video and seeing it wasn't, can't even own up to their mistake. They'd be more respected if they apologized but can even do that.
I've cleaned tons and tons of controllers in my time.... My own controllers and every single second hand controller I've bought I completely disassemble and clean from top to bottom. Detergent, Iso Alcohol, cotton buds, toothbrush, elbow grease and an attention to detail is generally all you need to clean them and get a pristine result. That controller was NOT cleaned in any way before assembly on that display board in may opinion.
Simple procedure with products most of us have around the house!!! A good soaking in a tub of water and Dawn dishwashing soap, an old toothbrush and a few Q-tips. An application of a scratch remover and car wax if its for display only.
@madlittlepixel I am with you on this. I have always thought their items were a little overpriced for what they are especially when you consider the items are non-working, to begin with. I want their GB one, in the end, I kind of made my own - I had a few dead GBs.
Striking before and after photos, the colour tone change shows just how much dirt was layered on the controller. This response to their response is fantastic.
I only have used the basic one in white bottle and the wipes for the same one. This one says it leaves a matte finish but it gives console a new looking shine, it isnt too glossy or too matte but the ones that specifically say gloss or matte finish in the name ive not used.
He should be ashamed he questioned you, if he had watched your original video,he would have clearly seen that the controller was covered in crap. I certainly would not pay that about of money for it.
Ron, long time sub, this is THE BEST, video you have ever done, IMO, you gone from retro video game influencer to a proper journalist, and all they had to say, is "yeah, sorry we fucked up", we gotta fix that, and all would be good. But because some idiot they hired to handle their social media "PR", dropped the ball, this will absolutely hurt them, cost them many $$, but, sometimes you only get 1 chance to make things right. every successful business knows this, you just told the truth, and that was fucking amazing.
Wow. For 200+ dollars you'd probably expect them to at least spend a little time cleaning it. Or source better controllers, although I do really dislike the idea of making these consoles and controllers into art pieces, even broken, as even if it's broken it can be used for parts. I'm guessing these are produced in somewhat large numbers so I highly doubt everything they source even is broken.
Ahh, the wonderful Novus 2... pinball collectors like me can't live without it (if you haven't yet, you should see what it does on playfields and plastics)
Can't wait for the next email when they say you switched out the controller lol. Seriously I can't help but think this company is just a bunch of Hobo's dumpster diving or going to a flea market finding stuff to take apart and frame it as "Art".
i might sound dumb sayinging this. but i enjoy cleaning systems epecialy putting the tooth picks in the side grooves and seeing all the dirt come out. so satisfying
You weren't happy at all with the quality and voiced that. The company/person producing these should take the criticism and fix it. While overall I liked it, the dirty control looked gross and I'd be annoyed by it...i wonder if its noted on their sale page that the parts may look dirty and grimey. But even if clean...I'd never pay $230 for that...maybe $79-99.
Wooden cocktail sticks / toothpicks are great for getting the gunk out of those crevices. Also if you trim the brush down a little with some scissors it makes it much stiffer and better at removing the gunk.
For the price they are charging, they should be sourcing like new controllers, not stuff tossed in the trash. It's pure greed, nothing else. I would have no issues paying a premium for something like this, so long as the product is quality. This screams shitty quality, and shitty customer service. There are other companies that do this, I think I'll check them out instead.
@@Safetytrousers I said like new. And just a cursory glance on ebay and Facebook marketplace, you find DOZENS of controllers in great shape. Most of the issued are loose sticks, but if you're tearing it down, that doesn't matter.
When cleaning plastics, I prefer to use lens/screen cleaner, as it's safe on plastics and is an excellent solvent for grease and water soluble stuff that the alcohol doesn't do a good job as dissolving. Alcohol is also good as a second followup pass, or alternating, to get the stuff that is less soluble in the lens cleaner like adhesive residue.
I think its better to be harsh at companies that make luxury items like this. Even when its unfairly harsh. When i pay a price like this i would also expect no scuffs tbh. There are enough ways to remove small scuffs.
3:46 "all products have a strict cleaning process including ultra sonic cleaning... [etc.]" ok, this just makes me want to stay away from this company even more; this statement is SO not true lol
Honestly they should be embarrassed at the unboxing of what they put behind glass. I'm thinking of putting thrown out fast food behind glass and see how well that sells.
I think the worst part of this whole business is I've seen people take the consoles and controllers out of these, put them back together, and *and they worked fine*. So not only are they destroying working game equipment that is no longer manufactured, they don't even have the decency to clean up after their butchering.
Wow your clean up looks so so much better than the original. Considering how much this thing costs in the first place you'd think that they would do as good of a job as you did. Also goddamn how did you get a follow-up video released so quickly?

For the price I'd expect them to repaint the case. A simple primer and similar grey colour air brushed on. After it's cleaned. I think it's nicely displayed. But the price is insane.
Wow. The gunk left on there before framing is disgusting. Unacceptable at any price.
The cleaned controller looks like a million bucks compared to how it was before. Well done!
I can't believe they tried to palm that off...
$230 for something I could make with stuff from a Goodwill and a Walmart. Maybe at least consider using the controller screws and some hardware to mount the shell. A crafty housewife could’ve delivered higher quality at a lower price.
I wouldn't pay more than $10 for that tbh. 💀
No dude that crap is garbage put that in the trash
Pathetic.
lmao there is no way that was ultrasonically cleaned
Looks pretty good now Ron. Thanks.
The confidence in the product is extra scary. They should have thought about it a bit more before responding. This is company crippling.
Got it!
Asking you to remove the video calling it dirty? if it’s dirty then you’re allowed to say so. Good honest review
Haha. Someone gonna get fired at that place after this video is dropped. The pictures dont lie. Ron busted them in 4k!
I respect how you doubled down on their double down... let's see what they say now..
@madlittlepixel I am with you on this. I have always thought their items were a little overpriced for what they are especially when you consider the items are non-working, to begin with. I want their GB one, in the end, I kind of made my own - I had a few dead GBs.
Hope this company doesn't make it. They don't deserve to if a single product went out with this filth on it
Striking before and after photos, the colour tone change shows just how much dirt was layered on the controller. This response to their response is fantastic.
Awesome cleaning video. I picked up a few tips myself. Now I have to go clean my PlayStation 3.
Which 303 looks better on a console, the matte or high gloss spray?
I only have used the basic one in white bottle and the wipes for the same one. This one says it leaves a matte finish but it gives console a new looking shine, it isnt too glossy or too matte but the ones that specifically say gloss or matte finish in the name ive not used.
He should be ashamed he questioned you, if he had watched your original video,he would have clearly seen that the controller was covered in crap. I certainly would not pay that about of money for it.
I can't believe they had the audacity to say they actually did clean it, it's absurd.
Exactly, it's crazy that they can lie like that. Who are they trying to convince? The controller was filthy and they didn't clean any of the residue.
Wait the spect to customers clean there products after pay 200 for that crap
Yeah that’s not acceptable
Ron, long time sub, this is THE BEST, video you have ever done, IMO, you gone from retro video game influencer to a proper journalist, and all they had to say, is "yeah, sorry we fucked up", we gotta fix that, and all would be good. But because some idiot they hired to handle their social media "PR", dropped the ball, this will absolutely hurt them, cost them many $$, but, sometimes you only get 1 chance to make things right. every successful business knows this, you just told the truth, and that was fucking
amazing.
They need to fire whoever said they cleaned the controller with the processes mentioned, they 100% lied.
I wouldn't care if the controller was immaculate. A stripped down controller stuck to a piece of card for over 200 dollars. Forget that.
It would be pretty hard to find new original controllers for a long discontinued product.
@@Safetytrousers I said like new. And just a cursory glance on ebay and Facebook marketplace, you find DOZENS of controllers in great shape. Most of the issued are loose sticks, but if you're tearing it down, that doesn't matter.
@@thecasualcanuck4590 I thought you were talking in the English colloquial way.
First. It's still garbage tho
They gave you some "art" and you gave it a proper critique. I have found many DIY crafts at thrift shops that are much cleaner than this.
3:46 "all products have a strict cleaning process including ultra sonic cleaning... [etc.]" ok, this just makes me want to stay away from this company even more; this statement is SO not true lol
I wouldn't pay more than $5 for that. I still don't even get what the point of it is. Why would someone buy that?
It's kinda cool seeing a controller all taken apart and seeing all the individual pieces. Not eveyrone's cup of tea but I like it.
@@MrAxelStone Why not diy with a broken one?
@@MrAxelStone Yeah but, $250?!?!?!? I can buy a whole working console and controllers for that.
I focused in on getting this video done and just blasted through it, took a few hours and skipping breakfast and lunch but I got it done lol.
@@Madlittlepixel Respect the work you do, man. Been subscribed to ya ever since I complained about your raspberry pi 3 set up video years ago (I was frustrated and being a douche when I commented on your video but quickly discovered that you're actually a kool dood)
Anger released quickly
It could be spotless but that price is crazy. I don't even mind the scratches. Sucks cuz it's a really cool idea.
I couldn't see anyone paying more than 20 bucks for that type of thing tbh. It's just a controller that's been disassembled and placed into a frame. 💀
