Something I do is I grab a bigger sketchbook and draw concepts for the cards, then I draw them in a smaller box and erase the border so it looks how it does on the card
Hi so I also make a homemade TCG that I play with my friends (it’s called Battle Infinity), I want to share my preference: I use paper with lines like notebook paper (I have a notebook with think paper) as guides since I’m too lazy to get measurements for the card layout and texts, but I make my card artwork so detailed and colour the background and text box that it is impossible to see the lines.
I also made a tcg (started 2020) that time I was 7 years old now I am 10 with fresh paper (blank paper) I also use transparent paper and stapled it to make it more like a factory made card 😀 😄 and it's called WAR 😀 😄 😉

Also in order to shade with colored pencils,you draw hard with the colored pencil and then you color lighter and lighter(less harder)and you get some decent shadeing Srry for all the comments
