Baraka was a military leader and retired with honors and distinction. His name was known even within the Empress' palace. After retirement he become a successful merchant and business man. Despite his immaculate service the moment he contracted Tarkat the empress seized all his hard earned assets, striped him of his titles, and exiled him and his family to the wastes. He lost his family to the sickness instead of getting help from whom he served. Gotta say he had every reason to become dissent and rebel against the crown and didn't.

Baraka had the biggest win out of the original cast with this new timeline, I think. He went from bottom of the barrel jobber to absolute G.

Seems like Tarkat carries the same stigma as leprosy did in ancient times, where even nobles who had it would be cast out.

I love how Baraka is nice to just about everybody, but genuinely seems to despise Liu Kang because he could’ve easily kept the disease from happening to begin with.

@@johngona5929 I mean no it wasn’t, and when you’re managing a whole world, or I guess in this case several of them it could be fairly easy to miss some stuff, but the dudes literally an omnipotent God. He can snap his fingers and yeet anybody he wants to into a black hole. There’s no reason to believe that he couldn’t eradicate a disease.
I mean. The issue itself is the fact that Lui Kang only had 3 options:
1.) let there be a race of tarkatan people and baraka becomes evil.
2.) let it be a disease and let Baraka be a good guy.
3.) not have him exist at all, but what variations would happen in the timeline if he doesn’t exist. He probably didn’t have a choice. We have seen that certain things are just destiny in their world.
It is great that most people answers Smoke's questions with a certain kindness, he is indeed best of Bois

Fun fact: in the intro, you actually *hear* Quan-Chi speaking. "This cannot be" upon seeing Onaga, and then "*What are you doing??* As Raiden begins charging his Final Explosion

Well, that explains why he's different from any tarkatans. Dude has strong will and courageous enough to deal with everything.
Essentially what Liu Kang tried to do is to make him a normal man with normal chances in society, but let him keep the burning passion and warrior spirit he always had. He was sure that when given a chance, Baraka would turn out an astoundingly capable and trustworthy person.
Imagine if this causes him to essentially become the equivalent to Alex Mercer when it comes to the tarkat virus able to fully control his body and have all the powers tarkat gives and never risk losing himself
smoke’s genuine curiosity is so endearing, and the fact that theres no evil inside of him (4:42)… he’s such a sweetheart 🫶
I love how Tomas an orphan who was taken in by Sub zero and scorpion’s father is asking why Reiko is loyal to Shao who also took him in and raised him as an orphan
He probably doesn’t know that and that’s why he is asking

These intro dialogues were a great idea to include because it essentially helps, nay, forces them to make every fighter a character with values and ideas they can talk about and convey. Tanya's religious, Baraka is a vet and Reiko idolises military life because of Shao's influence. All of these traits would have felt forced or been impossible to include in the main story without writing long info-dumps but here, they feel almost if not always natural conversation pieces and topics these characters might talk about. Not even mentioning great post-story content like Shao's escape from prison, Johnny making MK movies or Ashrah and Syzoth dating. Awesome and simple.
Barakas story is so sad 😢 he had such a proud humble life only for it all to be taken away by a mysterious illness.
It’s even sadder because Liu Kang didn’t want this for him, he tried to give him a normal life, but him being tarkatan is a canon event so it had to happen one way or another and it happened in the worst way possible

I love Mortal Kombat so much, its just become this twisted universe where bitter rivals, casual acqauntences, and even friends and family shoot the breeze, *violently* massacre each other, and then just return to do it again like its a normal thing to do.
In the ever-expanding MK multiverse, fights to the death are the norm. Alternatively, as Bone Thugs sang, is a everyday thing. So casual small talk before a fatally is common.

The fact that the Kris sensed no evil in Smoke just shows how good of a guy he is. He has some of the most wholesome interactions in the entire game. He's definitely my favorite character in the game.

Well, in the "original" timeline we follow, Shao had been the protector of Outworld at some point. It's not known if he had relinquished his demi-godhood before serving Onaga. Also, he's seemingly nowhere as old as Raiden or Fujin, so presumably either the Elder Gods or the previous protector deemed him to be worthy of that responsibility, which means he was could've been one of the top warriors even prior to learning blood and soul sorcery.
I also assume Shao was top dog BEFORE Onaga took over, because Onaga never chose to bear the title of Kahn, but instead of Emperor and King, so once Shao poisoned him and took the throne he may have simply reinstated the previous ways of ruling as he witnessed before Onaga's uprising, choosing the title of Kahn as the ruler of the main region of Outworld and of Emperor as he began conquering realms and kingdoms.

I think her line read at 9:44 was near perfect, like she came off as a believable character there. I don't know what they were doing during for her recording process or what the circumstances were, but clearly they weren't going out of their way to get or use her better takes. Most of her dialogue is flat as as all get out but I don't necessarily blame her for that. It's a shame, really.

I got a theory that Liu Kang sees redemption in his adversaries (even Shoa Kahn to an extent). When crafting his timetime, he sought to give Repile, Baraka, Mileena, Tanya, Shao, and Shang Tsung to give him "good lives". Then [SPOILER] f🤬ked things up...

Baraka and havik are the ones with most unique regeneration. Baraka's a little less powerful, but havik, he's technically immortal.
