Solid - A Better Web (Simply Explained)

- We have no privacy on the web anymore. Our data is stored with many third-parties, some even sell it behind our backs. Solid aims to put all our data in a single place that's under our control (pods). Changing the way we deal with personal data.
Solid was started by the inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. I can't wait to see the next generation of apps and services being built on Solid.
🙏 Special thanks to Ruben Verborgh for providing feedback on my script.

I really like the idea! I only see two problems that have to be solved:
1.) How to secure the pod data from not constitutional governments?
2.) How to convince the big services to set the data free?
Just an idea:
1) running pod on your local machine
2) only by legal requirements as is for example GDPR
@@Paul-lq6zp Interesting, but still, the security issue is not to be underestimated, putting all the data in one place increase the chances of losing all of it, of being hacked and things like that
Great channel, I am really happy for all the new things I will discover only because you thought about simplifying them. Thanks!
Loved the video! Thanks for sharing! Highly appreciated!
Awesome video! There are a few other companies trying to do that, maybe a video on them would also be interesting:
- holo and the holochain framework
- blockstack
- safe network
Thanks for simplifying this for us, I am on board 🎉
I'm shooketh that this channel exists. THANK YOU
I love the concept; I have a question regarding what Belgium is doing: if people's pods are essentially state-controlled, what safeguards will there be to prevent government abuse of that data?
How I understand it they can't look in it without you knowing it
Good point
Super interesting, great channel! Thanks for making it and sharing
Exciting. I wana work on a Solid app now. Also, love the name of the tech. It’s cool and catchy. It’s p solid 👌
Data portability. Now your data is your property.
I must be missing something cause the idea of Spotify allowing users to revoke or control their own data in any way is laughable. Is the idea that the public will prefer privacy-oriented companies in the future? Cause I very much doubt that existing companies are going to embrace privacy and user empowerment, especially if it means letting them seamlessly switch to a competitor. Regardless, I don't think privacy is going to win out as a reason people pick one service over another in the near future. And if the public doesn't care, I don't see what incentive future companies will have to create privacy-focused business models when data is already so valuable and it's only becoming more valuable.
So... how are Solid Servers different? It's still normal servers owned and managed by a company, right? So what makes it that people can retain control over their data? Is it a contractual matter? Meaning that the server lease agreement stipulates that you "own" your data? Or there is something more funky/special going on that I'm missing?
I don't think solid has their own server. It's stored on a pod inside your device. Kind of like cookies
It's more about building a common protocol and storing all the data on a singular trusted server. Anyone can build a Pod or use a hosted solution.
Healthcare could benefit tremendously. Going to a different medical provider and filling out a form with personal info could be a thing of the past. They could scan a QR code and you tap "Accept sharing medial history with XYZ, including..." .
Enrolling in a different school, booking a flight. Amazing how we can run this like Docker ourselves.
The pod system sounds amazing
This is amazing concept
Why I need a hosted pod for that? I think it can just as well be on my local PC. Some data you need to share only at the moment when you actually use the service. What the purpose of say youtube accessing your watching history in order to suggest your new video - when you don't open it?
Indeed, you can also self-host a pod at your home. I did mention that in the video. It's the ultimate form of control (but also responsibility).
This is pretty awesome!

Nice work ,keep going 👍
Companies have a specific budget for ads, regardless of how effective the ad is. Companies pay for the best ad services available. If there are no personal ads, the same money will just go to the next best thing. In fact, being in control of ad data could be a good thing, as it could allow each user to choose specific interests instead of big tech having to approximate them using personal data. But why would big tech willingly give up their power?
Exactly what I think. Sharing data isn't as bad as it sounds. The problem arises when such data is sold without our consent.
It's pretty neat technology by Sir Tim Berners Lee. I believe people have a right to own their own data. Maybe there should be used along side state ID in the US. It is sad that no one have any interest in this kind of tech. I believe this would solve privacy issues.
Can you share data between/within pods? I.e. two pods with the same music taste, name,... Changing one will also change the other...
What an amazing channel
this channel is my greatest discover ! thumbs up and sub
Please make a video on the SAFE Network. It's simply Awesome :)
The idea that collecting data is only for deriving value for it because the business model is broken and that some other monetization is needed... That's true, but many of these free services (e.g. Google) entirely rely on that data, so if we all stopped giving Google our data and instead paid for Google services, they wouldn't work, as the data is vital. Google needs to know who our contacts are, where we've been, where we've shopped, what sites we visited, what we eat, what we're thinking of buying, what medical ailments we're searching up etc... Laws are made by lawyers working for government, in a big revolving door of conflicts of interests. Don't expect the people to be protected any time soon.
Frustrating that when I search for 'solid' on YT, I get mostly content about object orientated design - nothing to do with the personal data initiative ☹️
thumbs up for bringing up piedpiper
Graet, thanks
Is Solid a wrapper class around block chain's decentralized algorithm?
Hello. Could you please make a video about tokenized stocks?
How do we retrieve our data already floating out there in cyber space?
The only way to truly decentralize , is to have home servers and the license (freedom) to split load balance between upload and download bandwidth freely with no restrictions. The antitrust should fine the big 4 for corrupting the ISP's all around the world. Static IP's should be free .. or should be included in the annual fees
What a good idea.....let the gov issue me a webid....smart
Hi. i want to make videos without face. but i don't understand how i can do. which free software i use make video. help?
hi, witch tool did you use to creat this vidéo ?
Nice.
One possible problem I stumbled upon reading the docs is... you are getting a unique WebID. And with this you are traceable over all services. Imagine Facebook and ebay would work with the solid eco system. If you grant facebook just a tiny bit of information about you, but ebay a lot more of other data. Who will stop them to combine that data? That data is linked to you WebID, so it's easy for them to combine/connect it.
Great video! Want to know more about Solid? Check our channel. We are a startup that is fully focussed on the Solid standard and have made several explainer videos about the questions that we get the most!
I'm afraid that these big monopolies will never allow it to come publically
This is a promising idea that is way less convoluted and gimmicky as the blockchain. Etheruem, Solana, gas fees, hashes, etc. I cannot see crypto overtaking fiat currency anytime soon because it's so damn complex for a non-tech savvy person to use and gas fees are atrociously high. On top of that, most of these cryptocurrencies are not as "decentralised" as you might think.
how configure it?
Non-blockchain technology (but decentralized plz, DAG,holochain, nano, hash graph)
Also, am I the only one who recognizes how stupid this "recommendations based on prior history" model is? If I just bought a book on Amazon, or listened to an album on Spotify, why in god's name would I want more of the exact same thing I literally just did? Would I not want something different? A change of pace? And if I did want more, do they really think I'm too incompetent to just search for more of the same? I mean, I saw/heard/bought the thing the first time, why would I have trouble finding it the next time around? This idea that you can "guess" what an end user wants is sheer lunacy that will inevitably end in miffed consumers getting annoyed by "recommendations" of things they don't want. It's pure arrogance on developers' part, and it tries to reduce the complexity of humanity to a very flawed machine algorithm.
But if 1,000 people, who had exactly the same list of favourite albums as you, all went and added a particular new album to their playlist, the chances are that you will probably like that new album too. It's not simply going to recommend more of the same, but effectively crowdsourcing based on thousands of other people who have the same tastes as you. I'm afraid it's not lunacy...
great
nice explain. love to see from Bangladesh. Any one help me to setup this SOLID
Security is primary concern and it is too risky if server gets hacked once delete the pod and you don't exist in the world :)
Good
Great idea - but how do we get those who are monetizing invading privacy to buy into this?
Provide them with other monetary incentives
Good point. Though, imho, the real challenge is getting consumers to "buy in."
Wouldn't it be better to store everything on our devices rather than a pod ( that would be central)
@@jvanek8512 and that profit motive will also ruin it
@@jvanek8512 yeah capitalism consumerism economy or money .. it;s ruining things , pushing to extreme
So many things being ruined by money...
We need to tackle these roots
What do they really mean by creating better services??? In order for that to happen means they need to know more about you in order to provide a better customise and tailor that service. That means giving up more of yourself in the gradual long term. Get rid of Facebook social media. Would like to see apple create a social media platform that’s more cohesive and meaningful.
Can solid store old data on sociale Media
I am wondering if Oracles in cryptocurrencies may be useful for this
One of the BIGGEST issues is that Social media platforms and other services WILL dictate the terms.
You want to use their platform? Sure. Provide more than you are willing to share. Else, bye bye,... you can't use their services and are automatically excluded.
People are too d"#$b and stubborn to say NO. They consent to EVERYTHING.
Have you heard of the Fediverse? 🤦♂️
That's a cool concept but the social networks would just make a copy of that data when you post it and keep that copy for themselves. Bottom line is if you interact with any of these networks you have to POST information about yourself which they get to keep. The only way to not do this is to stop using these sites or go through proxies and never give your real information.
That data would expire
Plus with this model legal checks against defaulters would be implemented similarly to GDPR sanctions
data is stored in the pod
I have been looking into Solid for a while, only if I had a better internet I could develop stuff using it.
All my data in one place raises some security questions. Since every hacker would be trying to target this one centralised data store. Also, I might want to give different data to different parties, such as my real email not being used to sign in to services which might send me unwanted emails.
I'd be interested to get Ruben's take on the potential for this technology to somehow become decentralised.
You can have multiple pods and host your own then you are less likely to be hacked unless someone is specifically targeting you lol.
Besides most data is centralized on most websites anyways
However, sometimes it's never a good idea to keep all of your eggs in one basket
Just convince Facebook to give up control. Sure…
0:51 Pied Piper 😂
Interesting, very interesting
sooooo can i buy in? lol
I don't understand what it is
Sounds like the Belgians are building the largest honeypot of their national history.
Monetizing may not be an issue. If all consumers "owned" their own data, then the various ecosystems/"walled gardens" would be forced to compete for your business. If one ecosystem, wasn't treating you right, you could take your data elsewhere.
What d
Bad idea. You have all your information in one place, make it even easier for companies/government invade your privacy.
Bad news for antonymous users
Facebook or Google will need legislation to force them to give up this data.
Their data will be out of date after a year or so anyway ,so it wouldn't matter
not convinced
Centralisation is not the solution
This is centralization of each person's data to each person. Not exactly centralization.
Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.
So you're making it more accessible to steal your data
if you don't want to share data then you shouldn't put it on the internet
instead,, move to the hills, hide under a rock, stay there until you pass away having had no effect on humanity and leaving no mark.
Is Solid a crypto project? If so, what is their symbol?
No. This isn't crypto shit, although it is compatible 🙄 don't get me wrong cryptocurrencies are a step up from fiat, but it's still (usually) capitalist money. I'm crossing my fingers projects like Breadchain and Mutualist cryptocurrencies end up helping humanity though.
0:25 - 0:30 not given a choice?? What? Just don't use them.
not given a choice, if you want to use them*
which is assumed
Some would say that these social medias are so big, that people are forced to use them to not be left out. E.g. a university that only posts updates via Facebook since "everyone has that".
Exactly
I love TBL but the man is basically just a brand-name without any real clout (no pun intended). Its pure wishful thinking. The video doesn't have any depth to it beyond explaining the idea, making it a hollow 'explainer' without any real meat. Its basically a database that's it, that's the whole thing. How does it work legally? What - if anything - do the big social platforms say about all this? Is there any big player onboard besides the brand name 'SIR' Berners Lee?
You're undermining the idea through a video designed to simplify the idea. It's a highly complex idea, read about it then form your opinion. This video is just for an outline...
@@Scientificmethods you give me too much power but I get your point. I appreciate the response. Cheers.
