Becoming conversationally fluent in a language from just an app is so crazy and impressive to me. I’ve been learning German in school for 5 years but I’m just not at that point. I’m doing it for A-Level so hopefully I improve
Keep it up
That’s the same with me. I learned Russian in school for 4 years and can only hold a basic conversation. Personally learning yourself is way easier than getting taught by another person. For some reason in school I was finding it harder to learn. I also don’t feel like schools in general are very good at teaching languages. I’ve been studying mandarin at home for only 6 months now yet I know tons more of that than what I did of Russian for all those years. If learning it in school is not working for you try studying yourself at home, I can promise you it’s so much better.
Schools go *a lot* slower than Duo does to be fair. Mainly due to there needing to be an efficient one size fits all curriculum. I learned more Spanish in a week with Duolingo than a year in school.
One problem I see with Duolingo is a lack of any long term writing excercises. One thing I love is the "finish the sentence using these words" exercise cause writing independently of a prompt is something Duo leaves alone entirely, but school does often.
@@latinasawntop how have you been practicing ? what tasks do you do.
School is somehow worse at teaching a language than duolingo
I wish their Russian had stories, oh man they're so good in Spanish.
And funny tooo

I believe on mobile, after a certain level, you can choose to bring up the keyboard instead of the blobs to answer a question. It's much better, I actually can answer quicker with the keyboard instead of looking around for the words in the blobs. And if I'm only given the blobs, I block them with my hand and try to answer in my head, then I move my hand. I'm on my phone a lot more recently so I prefer the mobile app, I learn during down time at work, when I'm too lazy to leave my bed... It's great!
when???!
You have to do the lesson like twice first

Decided to learn Japanese in November, spent a full two months learning two of the three alphabets before even touching Duolingo. It really helped! Spending the time to familiarise myself with the different characters before learning words/grammar really stopped me getting overwhelmed. After I had gotten comfortable with Hiragana and Katakana I moved onto Duolingo. I found that Duolingo doesn’t really explain the alphabets super well so I’m glad I had the foresight to learn them first. Other than that it’s been great learning Japanese on Duolingo! Hey Evan, thanks for these tips, I'm a native german speaker and have learned Spanish using the german-spanish tree so far - maybe it's time for me to switch to the English-Spanish one as well. I'm also watching the "Easy Spanish" videos on youtube a lot and I'm finding them super helpful. The concept of these videos is all about asking native Spanish speakers questions on the streets and they've also added both Spanish and English subtitles. I can really recommend it for improving your listening skills :) Thanks for keeping us updated about your language learning journey!
I've been struggling a lot with organising my learning on duolingo, and the cascade method looks like it'll be really helpful. Thanks Evan!
Tris Sharp I think I will try this as well, it really seems to be a good way to learn a lot more but also not getting too much on your plate at once
I've been doing the gold strategy 😅. For me its motivating and I feel like a get a solid understanding of everything before moving on, but I'd love to see how the cascade strategy works for others.

Bruh Spanish is the only one with all the cool new features, I’m learning Italian and have seen none of these
French gets them too
French has them
It varies between the languages. Am learning both German and Japanese, and there are many features in one and not the other.
The tips are present on the website regardless. Have found they aren't the same for both app and website.
Kit Hiniku Yes, the website and app are very different. P.S; are you going to learn Italian next?
@@tsani-bn2bk Not likely. For some reason I really struggle with romantic languages. Teied learning Italian while living in Italy. ...was able to talk like a 2 yr old in Italian. 😞 Am looking at Hebrew, Korean, or Greek next.

I am learning Spanish and I have found these books called Short Stories in Spanish by Olly Richards and they are really good there are short stories in chapter which are only a few pages long that after every chapter has vocabulary lists multiple choice questions and a summary of the chapter do you can see how well you have followed the story
I have got them in italian
Ive got it in french
Also, to everyone learning a language with a different script (Greek, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew, Ukrainian etc.) make sure to have a firm-ish grasp on the script before getting very far in at all. It’s perfectly fine to throw the cascading method out the window for the first 1, 2, 3 lessons to make sure you can fairly confidently read and write with its characters first. Believe me in this; I figured this out the hard way lmao
Im studying Japanese, but Ive been spending 90 percent of my time learning all of the Hiranga first. Because I see how much easier it is to understand the lessons, if you already understand the script.
@@joeylyrickz796 I’ve been wondering that. I want to start the Japanese tree but I don’t know the best way to go about it. Would you suggest focusing on the tree, focusing on Hiragana/Katakana tab you get to from the bottom of the screen, or doing a mix of both?
Thanks so much for these Duo videos!! I used Duo pretty consistently last year but then over the break switched from Android to iPhone, forgot my log in info and finally came to terms with the fact I'd need to start all over. i was SHOOK when I saw the new 2020 Duolingo update!! I'm glad I watched your video and I'm definitely excited to use the cascading method! (and desktop! didn't even realize that was an option...) Danke! :)
it feels so weird to see and so foreboding to hear someone so full of joy and optimism for the upcoming year in January of 2020 like we were such sweet summer children unaware for the looming doom
This is super convenient timing. Me and my friend have both spontaneously decided to learn a language, he's taking up French and I've gone with Spanish and I feel like I'm making really good progress so far. This video will no doubt be very helpful. Thanks.
Your videos encouraged me to start learning Italian on Duo, and I'm about two thirds of the way through my first year. The strategy that works for me is to do two or three new lessons each day, but with tonnes of 'practice' sessions too (the dumbbell symbol) as it recaps everything.
I started duolingo 507 days ago after watching a video of yours recommending it. I'm learning both German and Japanese and thinking of adding Spanish. I'm glad I started and kept at it, and I have you to thank for it. The starting that is 😁
This video convinced me to finally tackle learning Irish. I am happy to say I have been using Duolingo every day for about 2 weeks now with no intention of stopping. Go raibh maith agat! Thank you!
A potentially hot take: For me, the only useful part of Duolingo is stories. The normal lessons are repetitive af and improve my fluency much more slowly than stories do. I found that when I was doing a lot of Duolingo lessons everyday, I would rely on translating in my head instead of directly comprehending my target language.
Yeah it definitely doesn't work for a lot of people, but for some it does. It works for me as long as I'm supplementing it with other exercises, practices, and apps. With just Duolingo lessons, progress is pretty slow
I wish they had Japanese stories
They don't have stories for a lot of languages, Swedish for example is missing a lot of features
@@PaoloDiBello98 I was just about to say the same thing! I wish they had stories for Japanese dangit. What are we gonna do? Buy Japanese children's picture books I guess.
Well I knew I was actually comprehending when I could still do the lessons while stoned. Sometimes it made me feel like God
This is so perfectly timed because I've been doing the French Duolingo tree every day for a week (I took two years of French in high school and three French classes in college, and used old Duolingo back then a bit. I haven't studied it in about a year and a half but started over on working on a tree because of your videos!)
I haven't really been sure about how best to approach it, especially because I noticed that once you get through all the levels on one lesson, you don't have to use it anymore and I've already forgotten some of what I learned even in the last week. The cascading method is for sure what I'll try to use from here on out!
Marissa Price The Duolingo community is super helpful.
It is on the whole positive and you always get an interesting response to a question.

I’m an English speaker learning French just cus I want to. Actually, there’s a little more reasons. My best friend is a fluent English, Italian, and French speaker so I wanted to learn French so we could have secret conversations. I’ve been in Duolingo for two days and I’ve put 10 hours in already. Yes, I’m that motivated. A tip is to replay lessons so you can make sure you know it well and every time you learn a word, repeat it 10 times.

5 years. 5 years I have been learning french (in school, you have to in England) and I can hardly put a sentence together. I think it’s because I hate my french teacher therefore just don’t actually try in lessons but either way I am actually going to try practicing my french at home and hopefully in another 5 years I’ll be able to keep a conversation going on French.
I learned french in school for 8 years now my vocabulary ends at croissant
I just downloaded Duolingo to start relearning languages I use to know 😅
So this year I think my family is gonna start being competitive with Duolingo. My husband also has set our goal if this year we stick with Duolingo, we're gonna treat ourselves to a trip in spring break 2021 to Guadalajara in Mexico. Motivation at its finest!
I have been on Duolingo for a little over a week and I swear I have learned more in this past week than I did in two years of Spanish class during high school.... it’s amazing, really. I love this app so much! Well worth the money
After finishing Swedish tree on Duolingo (for ~ 2,5 years ago) I moved to Clozemaster and I can't tell you enough how amazing this combo is! After Duolingo I understood Swedish around A2 level. I can now read books and news and even speak! Since Clozemaster is quite advanced I was happy that I had my grammar basics covered. I wish Duolingo had stories and more advanced tree for Swedish when I started using it! Now I can't wait for Finnish to come out, although I am aware that this tree won't probably be very advanced and there won't be stories in Finnish anytime soon either :/
The cascading/waterfall method sounds exactly like what my sister(she teaches English to second-language learning students looking to take the TOEFL/go to college in the states) calls the Forgetting Curve and she also really REALLY highly recommends it- and there's research to back it up as a good way to get information into your long-term memory! Super cool!
Interesting that you mentioned cascading. I have been trying to improve my French with Duolingo after being inspired by your earlier videos. Your advice in earlier videos to try to get every lesson to gold before moving on was logical but I was finding it a bit repetitive and had started doing my own cascade. I found that really helps to keep things interesting as it avoids being too repetitive but keeping my cascade pattern as I want it means I don’t get too far ahead and don’t forget to practice what I have already learned. Like you, I also try to do the quiz for level four and level five on lessons, again because that is less repetitive but at the same time if I don’t pass the quiz I know that I need the practice..
You found the optimal path!
I have been following your progress on Duolingo. I have to say that it has been very useful. I look at your weekly xp total and do that in a day. A lot of progress.
Really nice to hear an honest review without someone trying to sell me something else. Purchased Duolingo plus, in conjunction with Rosetta Stone lifetime subscription. allabout yourself omg I’m learning Dutch got any tips for me? I would really Appreciate it!
CityFanTv -everything man city hmmm dutch is a very complicated language. I think you should start with learning the vocabulary and try to make sentences out of these words. Second you have to take a good look at the grammar (that’s the part where it can be a little confusing) you should definitely learn the articles (lidwoorden) and when you put “de/het” before a word. But don’t be too hard for yourself because we in the Netherlands often struggle with this ourselves. Also a really good thing is to start reading child books, it may be boring but in this way you learn the sentence building. Also watching or reading news in dutch is a way to learn it quickly. If you have any more questions you can ask me:)

How practical. well timed. just decided to search this today, and saw your video from around 2 years ago on learning German.
Hey Evan!! I used to do German in years 7 to 9 in school, and your videos have inspired me to pick it up again with duolingo. 2020 will be the year I try to get fluent! Thank you 😊💞
damn that lim as x approaches girlfriend reference took me back
Awesome idea for the cascade technique. I've been completing one whole category before I move on, and of course, fatigue sets in. I'll be doing your technique from now on!
Hey, thanks for the video Evan. Answered a lot of questions I had and helped me through in coping with the new Duolingo system. Really helpful :)
I'm learning Dutch through English, even though I am a francophone, but basically bilingual so that part of the experience isn't making it any trickier for me. However, I am really sad that I don't have access to stories with Dutch yet! But I bought a small Dutch book and a dictionary and I'm translating it on my own bit by bit, it helps a lot to see the words I learn on Duolingo used in a different context! I am also using a variant to the cascading method, I am getting all the skills between two checkpoints to level two, then work my way up to level five, depending on what I want to work on that day! I'm also making sure that everything before those lessons stays golden, and I do a practice everyday to mix words from different lessons! Your videos on Duolingo have really motivated me to keep going and my streak is currently on 116 days! It broke this summer when I was almost on 300 😅. So yes, thanks again for your motivating videos and hopefully I'll be able to visit the Netherlands as well as the UK when I have mastered Dutch to the level I see fit and am able to visit!

I'm 12, kind of a nerd from Wales (uk) and I saw myself as a dunce in languages. Then my German teacher recommended duolingo when I was still 11 and I stopped after like 4 days. Fast forwards to last August, randomly did Norwegian (that didnt last long), but when i went back to school and the german teacher announced they're picking students to go to Ohio on a scholl trip, random extreme motivation. Now it's not even about the trip and I've done hours of duolingo daily. I feel extremely motivated and happy towards learning languages and continuing my streak on my longest run possible. I may try to learn Welsh, Thai, Spanish or Dutch next. Could you help me decide?
@@HDTomo I’m doing Turkish and french right now, I would recommend Turkish it’s a lot of fun. I’m from Britain and I find Turkish fun, challenging but not too hard.
Are u still doing it?
@@nataliaikramikramnatalia6468 nope gave up like 2 weeks ago lol
@@kindlittlebunny9869 yeahhh i think you shouldn‘t even learn too fast on duolingo learn only 10 minutes a day and you already complete 1 level
I just discovered this guys UA-cam channel and I’m already subscribed 😂 I love his energy!!!
Watching this 2 days before 2021. Thank you for the info!
topping the league is lowkey the one thing that keeps bringing me back to the app tbh. my grammar isnt improving as much as I'd like but at least I beat out rusty 😤
i started doing swedish nearly a year ago and i'm actually pretty proud of my progress. i cant wait till they add stuff like the stories to other courses
I'm doing Swedish aswell
ye it's pretty unfair i'm doing it aswell how far through are you
Varför lär ni er svenska?
@@nicolairvine6216 I've got to the first checkpoint but I might move to desktop from mobile because it seems better.
Grattis!
They don’t have hearts on endangered languages, which is why I’m doing Scottish Gaelic
Because of you, I immediately went to add Scottish Gaelic to my languages list. I had no idea they added it! I've always wanted to learn that beautiful language, so thank you!
Rachael Carmichael is Scottish Gaelic the same as Irish Gaelic?
Emily Coughlan no, they’re similar but not the same, like english and french.
Slap Chopp 2 do you know if there is Irish Gaelic on Duolingo?
@@emilyc4724 What Slap Chopp 2 said. They're definitely similar. I would say if you can understand one of them, you may be able to understand some of the other, but they're completely different experiences :) I believe Duolingo has both Irish and Scottish Gaelic!
Been learning Spanish on duolingo myself this year - Seriously loving it! :)
The cascading method is something that I started doing and it makes so much sense to do so for the reasons as explained in the video!
I'm on Duo to try learn French so I can apply for a job at Disneyland as the interview is done in English and French as well as any other language you might know. I love the app but I wish there was a wag where I could maybe have a tree directed to a purpose so instead of learning about the basics as much about my family and home town, I could say 'im learning for work' and maybe they could gear in some career focused learning more frequently throughout the basics of animals and foods.
Lucy Moseley I’m fluent in French if ya ever need help :)
I learned french for 7 years at school and If you asked me to say bread in french I’d be clueless and I still am. Learning languages at my school was pointless. I have been learning Portuguese for a while (not even 1 year) and I have learned loads and loads.
I’ve seen huge success with my last six months on Duolingo, WAY more than I ever learned in school, where French class is mandatory (I’m Canadian).
The way he said "El hombre come el pan" sounded like if he were saying "el hombrei coume al pen". As a native Spanish-speaker, it was weird.
Viejo literalmente aprendió dos idiomas fluidamente usando una app para móviles algo es algo no? Me sentiría orgulloso de mi mismo si lograra eso
Maeve Raeve I dint think that you can perfectly pronounce English
Jose David 1507 right but even i can pronounce things clearly and pretty well from a couple years of spanish in school and talking on iTalki with spanish speakers. Duolingo isn’t god
Maeve Raeve 😂😂😂😂
@Mute Draws Tipicamente uso videos para aprender los sonidos de idiomas como espanol
Yaaaas! I've been waiting for Duolingo to add tips to the mobile version! I always wondered why Duolingo's desktop app had these helpful tips, including grammar, and the mobile app version had none.
So glad to see the cascading tip. I’ve been questioning whether I’ve been doing it right.
i feel proud that i’ve been doing the cascade method by myself
*Sad Swedish Duolingo noises with no stories*
R.i.p. My advice is to Google some PDFs. :3
It could just be the language you're learning. You can only do stories if you're learning Spanish, German, French and Portuguese I think .
Evangeline Mash yeah I know which is why I commented that
Podcasts are also available for some languages only
sad icelandic noises
I never would have considered the desktop version of Duolingo, I look forward to trying it. Great video, love the energy and your channel. Thank you (from the UK).
I've started learning Spanish during lock down. It is great having an activity to do everyday which you can see your progress and get a sense of accomplishment. Thanks for the video Evan :)
same :)
@@pavlea721 I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I'm a Polish native speaker, English is my second language, I've been learning it since I was 4, (I'm 20 now) and now I've been learning Greek from English, mainly on duolingo, for about half a year. So far it works fine for me, I feel like i'm making some progress with every new lesson i complete. I'm going to try the cascade method now, I hope it will make my learning more efficient 😊
Hello, Cya. I'm learning polish at this period of time and it would be more than helpful to help me and be my language partner. I'm a total beginner but I'm willing to afford time for languages. Plus, I am a native Greek so it would be my pleasure to help you in exchange. Give me a feedback if you're interested.
him: “welcome to 2020! it’s gonna be a great year!
me: sitting in quarantine in 2021
I'm cracking up! Love the vid, keep it up and thanks for the tips
I’m trying to learn French and Spanish. Thanks for the helpful tips. For sure gonna apply them every time I open the app
Question: Did you have to take notes when you learned German? Or did you memorize everything?
Take... notes? No
I actually really want to start writing down stuff for my swedish course, I think I just don’t do it enough to memorize everything perfectly (I do the minimum every day)
I take a screenshot whenever I see a word or a sentence I want to take note of, then, some days I add all the words to an anki deck of French I created.
JackoClubs5545 I take notes for my Spanish, and I make flash-cards too!
I feel like it's better to write down vocabulary and everything because it allows you to practice those words and understand the meaning more etc
Im learning Norwegian and im gonna do it every day all for this summer, I'll tell u guys how it goes, (btw im also using books and norwegian work sheets also, not just duolingo)
you actually got me into duo, evan! studying spanish right now and i'm on my 120th day streak :D
The cascading method is a really good idea! I never thought of practicing that way.
On my Android Duolingo App I only have hearts when I try to "test out" to level up a skill and the exercises seem to be the same as in the desktop app. Unfortunately in some languages the explanations to the skills ("tips") are missing completely when on the app.
Edit: Apparently, when "restoring" skills or "practicing", the exercises are easier on android than on the desktop version i. e. on the app there is much less real text production and more word tapping.
when he said "language and math, my two favourite things" man i couldn't agree more
tell me why i was at that part of the vid when i read that like exactly
Lol you're funny. First video I watch on your channel, and I already subscribed. Thanks. Saludos desde Colombia! 🇨🇴💪🏽😉
Ha! I really enjoyed this video you are a cool guy! 😁 I came to youtube as I just started learning Spanish on duolingo and was a bit confused with the whole tree system so this video really helped.
