Press the "dome override" button for your lights panel. This will allow you to remove the key from the ignition and not have your interior lights on constantly and draining your battery while you work. Also, if you press that button four times it will disengage the daytime running lights which will extend the life of your alternator. This would have to be done every time you start your vehicle, fyi. You should hear a "ding" when you do this.
@@ImChrisDeDecker I hadn't gone through your whole video before I posted my comment. With the removal of the airbag, you always want to disconnect the battery. Sorry, I jumped the gun in my eagerness to help! 😁
I really enjoy your channel brother....I say "brother" because I bought a 2005 Chevy Astro Van in 2020 and have been updating it along the way....so fun to do and channels like yours give me more inspiration....so as a member of the Chevy Astro family, thank you for sharing your Journey....!!
@@ImChrisDeDecker It's cut short. If you dive deep enough on my "profile/channel" I have a music video of a summer of folks you Might remember if you can make out the clear parts. UA-cam butchered it upon upload.
I know this vid is from months ago but I'm just now getting to these areas of my van. This is my third? maybe fourth project on my Astro that you have saved my butt! I currently have massive amounts of duct tape holding my dash together. Thanks a million, man!
I think you have MAD SKILLS with all that you learned on this project will show in the next project you undertake. That was as Brave Move tackling that dash and all the knowledge you gained using those products is priceless. Keep up the good work. I have two Astro vans that were converting into His and Hers camper vans.
I am all for learning from my own experience and mistakes, I thoroughly enjoy it. Thanks you for the acknowledgement! That sounds amazing. Yall two traveling around. Hope they turn out perfect for you two
Earlier today I was looking at my van thinking it would look better with a black dash and then I see this.... I might try one of them carpets You've got the right attitude, just do it, you learn so much from doing and making mistakes - You don't really learn anything if you don't make any mistakes :)
A carpet is a great way to go, I was just going crazy about the dash peeling. I appreciate the acknowledgement. There are just a few of us who tackle jobs head on. That is exactly right. You can make mistakes and learn without college tuition, which is an amazing thing.
I have to do this with my semi truck it’s really old and my dash plastics are all messed up I can’t wait to see how it comes out thanks for the video brother keep up the good work
CLAMPS EVERYWHERE. I think I need more. I've been planning this few about a month. Definitely happy with the outcome, and thank you for checking it out!
Not sure if you or anyone else sews but if you do small segments at a time with more planning and templating you can sew the segments together and its an easier install and you get some sweet top stitching
Not at this moment. I was thinking keeping the rest tan and that odd gray from the bezel. I am planning to try to snag some door panels from the local pick n pull. I think everything will come together then.
That is really not a bad job at all for your first try . I have my vinyl and it's the same as what you have but I have not fitted it yet as I think you have to be in a calm state of mind to do this kind of job plus I am still thinking to just flock it instead.
I appreciate it Lee. With projects like these, and new things I tackle, which is a lot of what I do, I need to consistently take breaks to prevent a lot of irritation. Flocking should be a lot easier, I am just unsure of he durability and for my purpose, I would still have to modify the peeling up dash. Definitely possible though
@@ImChrisDeDecker flocking is a really dirty job. I think since I now live in mexico If I do put the vinyl on I will just leave it in the sun for a while before fitting it . Looks good. Worried about or want to hide imperfections and make it look good... Get an ostrich pattern or gator or snake or ?? The vinyl has built in texture with a great hiding ability. Me... I like the ostrich pattern. That's what I use mostly. At least you're having fun. ♥️🇺🇸
I am in the process of painting my interior. Black. Dupli-Color vinyl and fabric paint. It's amazing once the parts were completely cleaned and prepped all the original grain look comes back. I'm real happy with it. I used the flat black. It actually dries to a satin/matte finish.
It is always so satisfying seeing your work complete and finished. Sounds amazing my friend! I like that idea, but I like the cleaner look. But, you are right. The blemishes/ mistakes are easily visible.
If you are tackling this job, use a heavier duty glue! The glue started to lift just a bit on some parts due to the Texas heat. Perhaps I didn't use the contact cement correctly. I started a Patreon and I would love your support: www.patreon.com/BuildsUnited

I must have not cleaned some of the surface well enough before applying the adhesive because it start to pick up in one spot. Other than that, still way better than the way it looked before.
@@ImChrisDeDecker I believe I’d replace it with a newer one. Looked like you had taken most of what you needed to take off already. I would have done it at the same time I replaced the windshield.
@@joshreed7102 it may be difficult to find a good replacement. I’m sure most, if not all, of the dashes are brittle by this point and removing it from a nicer example without ruining it may be near impossible.
