Yep, definitely a scary lap, you really are out in the elements in an Atom. For once I can see the benefit of flappy paddles for gear change, that car was quite skatey at speed and even with some warmth in those tyres. I also noticed many times where he was in top gear and must have been approaching redline, but no more speed to give. Very lively lap, well done.
ive owned a VW .:R32 MKV and it came with a dual clutch auto and paddle shifters, im used to having a 3rd pedal and rowing gears. let me tell you those dual clutch autos are amazing. they get boring after a while BUT it lets you make moves you wouldnt be able to or confident to if you had to clutch and shift. its alot safer too. BUT the THRILL of driving is GONE you just mash and steer. the "oh shit " moments are gone. ive moved on to a Stage 3+ Ford Focus ST(wanted a stick, leather recaros, and boost) and wouldnt want to drive it if it was a auto.

I estimate that it is about a 9 minute full Nuremberg Ring lap. Like other guys mentioned it could use better gearing and a few other things to tune it better for the run. Still a fun about half run to watch. Having a passenger makes a big difference in light weight vehicles like the atom.
TrackandTuner records a very scary lap onboard a Turbo Charged Ariel Atom. The Ariel Atom is a fast pocket rocket, with no windscreen and no body. This owner took it up another level by putting on a big Turbo, getting over 450HP from this very little car. I stepped in with my helmet on to experience the very fun lap. But I must say, that the Ariel Atom might be the scariest car to take on the Nordschleife. What car would be the scariest car on the Nordschleife?
I have driven a supercharged Atom (300bhp, with additional brake upgrade) round a small track, it was insanely quick 😊. I can imagine how much fun this beast was.
Yeah I think his lines in the beginning were untidy because he must of been concentrating on catching those cars that left early in front of him. Anyway his lines looked great after that 👍
20 seconds on a track is a long way down the road. Whilst the Atom was sitting the 911 was hammering down the road. In fact, the 911 would probably be 1k down the road before the Atom left.
@@BatMan-oe2gh 20 seconds on a 20.8 km track is only roughly a 3 mph / 5 kph average speed difference to catch up. The Atom just wasn't faster. Still scary though considering the wide open cockpit.
Ugh, it's hard to watch with the rev-limiter on so much but I agree, if you geared it appropriately you would need to be a very, very, VERY good driver to wring it out. Welcome to the limit!
A decent gearbox with not so close ratios is called for and maybe dct with paddles. Driver with titanium balls this guy he deserves a machine where his untold skill would benefit from a sorted car. Great video

He passed every car or bike he came up on and the only other player was a ZL1 Corvette that was out there, they took turns out front and no one passed either of them.....
It's difficult to imagine that a human being actually said, "This Ariel Atom needs more power." Enough gearing to properly exploit the motor would be suicidal.
Over a 21km lap of the Nordschleife the atom didn’t catch the black muscle coupe 01:55 or the white porch 02:09 seen heading onto the tracks . They must have been going some stink as well!
Did he blow the exhaust in Mutkurve? I've had the exhaust crack on a Mugen Edition Ariel Atom and it kind of sounded like that. (It wasn't mine, and hats off to anyone who dares push an Atom this hard on an unforgiving track like the Nordschleife. It is definitively not an easy car to drive fast)
Scary lap - right... The car already slips away with the rear axle when turning, without the driver accelerating. Something urgently needs to be done about the setup here.
Needs a lot more gear and a lot more tire, the rear end is trying to push past the front end, no front end grip and 15 miles on limiter cant be good for the valve springs
Ha, Im just a Internet Genius, Meaning I have Zero idea what to do, but I watch a lot of you tube, so that makes me smart :) First of all the car is all the cool, just needs to be sorted for higher speeds. As many other posts say, it clearly needs more gear because its on the limiter all the time. Anyway, I look forward to seeing it again
Sorry Th X There are multiple reasons for a RWD rear engine car to exhibit varying degrees of oversteer that DON'T involve the throttle on acceleration, and many of them don't indicate an issue with the car setup. The atom chassis and suspension is pretty sorted out, but it will definitely favor a little oversteer and get just a tiny bit tail happy in the corners when pushed to the absolute limit. It Dosen't matter how perfect the suspension setup is. Yes, all 4 tend to break loose at the same time, (indicitive of a well sorted suspension setup) but... the rears will rotate more than the fronts in a 4 wheel slide... because the engine is in the back of the vehicle, and the car weighs nothing . The lotus 7s And caterhams exhibit similar behavior when driven hard. Its just a characteristic of rear engine, rear wheel drive lightweight track cars. As long as the driver is skilled, and doesn't let it get away from him - a little counter steer to arrest the pendulum effect will sort it out and no "problems" will result. Its an expected condition in this type of car when driving it to its absolute limit of grip. Big dave, you are partially correct - wider rubber up front, or staggering compounds could delay the effect - but it won't really stop it. It'll just make the car even faster through the corner before grip is lost, all 4 will slide and it'll do the same thing... just at a higher speed.
It looked pretty in control to me. This isn't a criticism, just an observation, but I found it interesting that whenever you had oversteer in a right hand bend, you took your left hand off the wheel. As soon as the car goes neutral, you loosen your grip ready to remove the hand, and then when it transitions to oversteer, the hand comes off completely. Is this because of limited space in the cockpit to move your left arm? For oversteer in left hand bends, both hands stay on.
Some people in the comments saying it needs this and that, they don't understand power to weight ratio. Nore do they understand how easy a high revving turbo car spins up

Think you should tune the gearing differently for this track, so many fast parts that isn't utilized properly, becuase the final gear doesn't reach high enough speeds to keep climbing.
