On one hand, the ship builder is fantastically fun and developing your own ships is practically a game in itself. On the other hand, it's fairly easy to make user-ships that trivialize the game's difficulty. You can give them so much thrust that enemy guns cannot track them, make them so durable that they're virtually indestructible, or simply shape them in such a way that the AI crashes into the ground trying to avoid collisions. Since there are few limitations on using custom ships in singleplayer I find the game more challenging when I restrict myself to using stock or near-stock designs. Still, it's a singleplayer game and there's no right or wrong way to play.
I like to start with stock only, but complete rework is fair game mid-campaign. I figure if I have the time to dramatically alter a ship that much I've earned it. I also feel like it's more enjoyable to build up to your ideal ship through the game, rather than just starting with it. But yeah, as long as someone's enjoying the game they should do what they want!

IRST is actually a very accurate and passive system, as it shows an exact bearing (not an approximated bearing like ELINT) and you can identify what the enemy is by turning the IR scanner to the bearing, and looking at the waterfall display. Note that the IRST will scan a full 360 degrees, as indicated by IR spikes on the HUD, the small focused bearing is just the sector that you're trying to identify with the waterfall display. All this, the IRST is still a passive system and has 0 emissions meaning it is completely stealthy to use, and it also does not suffer from reduced range when you are landed.
Agreed, but the range us my issue. I'd prefer ELINT to give me a solid warning of an approximated direction so I can counter tbh. I agree irst could have its uses, as a hunting device, but in all honesty I feel compelled to track the enemy strike teams more than cargo.
@@SimUKReviews IRST is the only way to passively know that the enemy is sending missiles (or aircraft) to you But at this point you should really just turn on your radar & jammer. A thing I found out, that you can mount your flares to a specific direction and when missile is close, shoot flares at an enemy ship, the missile will change its trajectory and kill an enemy ship.
Fast, agile ships are excellent if you're a very good pilot. I have a tiny corvette that costs less than 7k and I can kill garrison groups guarding cities single handedly with it. If I arm it with two bombs, I can heavily damage a cruiser with it, and maybe even finish it off with guns. (Bombs will require practice to use, I recommend playing with bombers in the ship editor.) That being said, big, expensive armored ships still have their place. Sometimes an enemy is just too powerful, and your flying skills aren't so stellar as to let you take on enemy strike groups with only a couple of corvettes. You can either try weakening them with missile and air strikes, or use armored ships to fight them on more even terms. A well built and heavily armed and armored frigate can kill cruisers. There are several designs in the base game that fulfill these criteria, but custom designs can often outperform these.
Another point on the personality points is that they will affect the crew morale events where you need to make a speech to recover morale (like the event where the sun's gone). High faith, order and/or Romani worldview make it more likely that morale doesn't get kneecapped and even recover the morale lost from the event. It is worth noting that it seems like Gerat worldview and Romani worldview are not easy to raise and maintain at the same time, and that order is leveraged against getting certain allies on board that otherwise would be considered bandits and outlaws to be hunted. Don't know if it's a thing but if these also affect random city events, I would not be surprised. Anyways, great guide! My PC is on the weaker side but I guess I can run it with every turned down XD. Might be a little before I can get the game and play it though. Custom ships are going to be the first thing I make when I do.

Regarding launching planes in combat, is it true that they won't ever return to your ship and are effectively destroyed after the fight? Seems a bit stupid if true and that's what I read elsewhere.
No, they return to your ship, but only if you are still within the circle range you set at launch.
@@SimUKReviews I feel like we're talking about different things. If you set a circle presumably you launched them in a strike on the world map.
I'm talking about launching them with the hotkey during an actual battle.
My bad. Hmm, you know I can't remember if that is what happens.
Wait a minute. High explosive is the default ammo type.
Very good tutorials. I have a question. I don't know why, maybe I pressed a button or something, but when I zoom in on my fleets the camera doesn't follow them. An unimportant detail but it's driving me crazy. Do you know how to solve it? Thanks for the tutorials.
When are we talking about?
@@SimUKReviews On the campaign map. When you zoom in on a fleet and put the view where you see the ground. In this particular video I can't find a moment where it happens.
@@SimUKReviews I've searched the first video of your campaign on hard but I couldn't find any moment where you zoom while the fleet is moving. Take a look at this video. Minute 1:42. See how the camera follows the fleet? In my game it doesn't. And it's driving me crazy xD

it's like he said: some choices are not made equal..
i tried it out and yeah you dont get punished for it
Anyone got any idea of how to modify ships to make the ridiculous lack of money less of a problem?
e.g. Putting planes and long ranged missiles on the sevastopol.
I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to adding engines and fuel tanks without making fuel efficiency drop like crazy.

You can solo this game on HARD with one ship without flying anywhere. Well, then you have to go to Khiva and do some stuff, but overall difficulty is pathetic. This game is meant to be played on basic ships with some minor tweaks.
