Metallica - Creeping Death (Really Loud Bass by Cliff Burton)

- Ever wondered how Metallica would sound if James was just singing and while Kirk's playing the guitar solo Cliff's the only one providing rhythm and harmony? Well, here's how it sounds!
This is my version of "Creeping Death". I mixed it using Reaper and mastered it using T-Racks CS. This is part of my "Burton' the Lightning" project, I'm actually uploading all Burton songs I can find in mogg format, that way I can mix the bass as loud as I want to.
This sounds as if Metallica were a power trio, so whenever Kirk plays a guitar solo, Cliff is the only one providing foundation, rhythm and harmony to the song. I think that with this type of line-up, Cliff's work can really shine and stand out in the mix.
If you add a rhythm guitar, things get cluttered and the bass disappears. And my goal here is for us to hear every single note Cliff is playing. So the volumes are all switched. When we hear guitars on a record, they're always much louder than the bass, and this is our revenge! Here the bass is the star!! And Cliff deserves that, his arrangements are simply beautiful and shouldn't be buried in the mix, so please listen to it as many times as you want and promote it away.
How was I able to do that? I had access to the original isolated tracks, so that way I felt free to mix them and highlight the sections I thought were richer to the whole project. That meant cutting off some of James' guitar parts during Kirk's solos, and leaving Lars out of the spotlight. That way, Cliff's bass line came to life and the song sounds amazing!
"Really loud bass" for Metallica-standards maybe. For the rest of the world this is just about near perfect.
It is too loud.It needs to be just and bit lower.
@@martos60 nah man, its just as it should be, even a few dBs more wouldnt hurt.
@@martos60 this almost typical bass volume of Megadeth or Anthrax
@@Faks.09 cliff didnt care about loudness, he wanted his bass to mix in well with the rest even if it meant not being able to properly him him. That's the difference between Metallica and every other band.
Why did you say it, as if Metallica is the only band that "makes bass mix well with others"
10 people love the way And Justice For All was mixed
Buddy Mack .......... I like it
same
Me too
haha lol
I really hope your not saying that creeping death came from and justice for all...
My question is, why did cliff agree to it being so unnoticeable?? Hes one of the best bass players that ever existed
We'll never know, but it seems to me that James and Lars are the leaders of the band and the project has always been a riff-based band, with the guitars upfront. Cliff did what he could and he enjoyed a vantage point since he was older than the other guys and also more knowledgable in terms of music theory. He even had his "Eruption" moment being able to record a bass solo on their 1st album, can you imagine any other musician being able to pull it off with James and Lars? So overall I believe he was very successful, given the space he had. Thank you for watching!
@@alextamulis I bet that he was more into the moment and just enjoyed playing the part to play. The recordings were in moments past, so they probably didn't matter that much to him. I bet Cliff was a man that lived in the moment.
the sound of the song is more important than the sound of an instrument alone. it so obviously was not meant to be this high in the mix.
well look at kill em all, the bass is super audible
I'm born day after Cliff dudes a bass destroyer himself
I'm surprised he never broke strings @@alextamulis
This is a perfect mix. Most people who bass boost songs make the bass way to loud.
I find it a little too quiet. Not being rude, but I search for a bass boosted version because I wanted a lot of bass. It's annoying having to go through every different result, which all have the bass basically at the same level as the album. Usually I just end up listening to bass covers, but you have to find a good bassist so it sounds good
Dude, I have to disagree with you. This is the only version that you can hear the bass during every lead guitar solo. There's no rhythm guitar sharing the EQ spectrum and fighting for the limelight. So you can hear every note. The thing is, if I turned up the bass a couple more notches, it would sound unnatural. My goal was to get the rhythm guitar out of the way so everyone could have the bass there, as the foundation of the rhythm section. The original version would never give you that, because the volume of the bass is much lower and James's guitars are really loud during Kirk's leads. 2:53 is an example, Kirk is soloing and you can perfectly hear everything Cliff is playing.
ikr
The more the mix sounds like Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, the better. You can focus on a new instrument every time and it's crystal clear in the mix.
@Akimbo You can get this mix by playing the bass in Guitar Hero Metallica and turning up the volume of the bass, the game have official separate tracks so that is why it sound so good
This bass ain't loud enough, it's just perfect
I have never noticed how tasty is this part 1:51. I just love the bass here!
Listen creeping death bass only.
I don’t know how the hell I was snake to hear that through the mix when I was 7 years old, but when I discovered it it made me pick up the bass. I have no idea why the hell the bass is so quiet. It’s a damn shame.
@@thejohnleos That's Lars Ulrich for ya ;)
@Shallex It's audible. You need better headphones.
@Shallex No kidding. I just listened to Creeping Death original record and bass in this part is pretty audible. Ofc it's not as loud as this yt version, but still i can recognize notes and hear harmonics. Btw i've got Sennheiser HD 599.
You should do Pulling teeth (Anesthesia) with boosted bass
Now that's overkill
Turn up the volume, problem solved
Ryn1311 gets stuff
Yeah, turn the drums volume really low...
Everyone gone whoosh
I love the way his bass playing departs from the guitars in such classy ways at perfect places.
Listening Cliff trashing those notes back to back was to me like a deaf person hearing for the first time, I love you
Cliffs voice gives me chills 🥵🥵
"DIE DIE DIE!" Absolutely epic \m/
Gives me so much goosebumps everytine
I wish the cd sounded like this!!!!
Me too!
Really good mix. I don't know why most of the bands doesn't mix albums like this, cause adding bass louder like this doesn't even effect other instruments badly.
No way. Too much bass. You're a fool.
I never heard bass guitar till I started listening to other bands. Metallica for some reason really buries it unless it's live
I agree. they had the bass way to low on ride. it would be much better if you could actually hear it a little bit.. rest in peace cliff.
This grooves like hell. What a damn good bass part like this.
the bad brow
cliff only lived for 24 years but left a great impact ! sometimes i imagine what if god gave him a longer life.
O mundo não estaria preparado para isso...
Cliff Burton ın kardeşiyim That puts it into perspective. Some people who live much longer lives can only hope of achieving such an impact.
keşke :(
The bus driver, not god lol
I'M CREEPING DEATHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHH
The Big Flying Ninja wtf? More like “ I’M CREEPING DEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH!”
OOOH CREEPING DEAAAAAAAAAAAATH
4:01 (click and enjoy)
thank you.....
Thank you
This is the best version of this song, with the Cliff´s bass parts at his best!!!!!
Damn, even in my sleazy huawei this bass rocks!
yes baby
The guy pretty much played leads on his bass. So outstanding. Crunchy goodness.
You don’t realize how awesome the bass lines and melodies are under the layers of guitars I cliff’s bass parts
I just don't get how Metallica just did not understand the function of the bass guitar in the studio. Even Anthrax has prominent bass sound on their early records. Frank is a bad ass and he shines on those records.
Frank is bad ass agreed 👍.
Iron maiden and deep purple songs have louder bass
And lars is the leader of metallica
Yeah well Metallica is not Anthrax
@@smarkmalark I didn't say they were, I said they didn't understand the primary function of the bass guitar in the studio (they understood the concept live, as their live recordings have prominent bass on them!)
3:20 looks like it's music for the beginning of a great adventure.
It’s fun to hear, that Cliff was late at 0:18. I don’t feel so shitty about my timings now.
This is the metallica mix i want
Cliff's bass lines are something else! The world was robbed when he was killed.
He was great but he wasn’t doing anything extraordinary. He just played what he needed to play and never overplayed. But I wouldn’t say his bass lines were something else.
@@kuma1388 have u listend to the bass on ride the lighting it’s literally somthing else
I love the series of bass-heavy remixes you've done on Metallica songs. I'm got them all on my iPod as a "Cliff 'Em All" playlist. It's a great resource for bass players and it's a cool new perspective on the band's early (and best) songs. Do you have any plans to remix other songs featuring Cliff Burton? It'd be great for you to do this with "Fight Fire with Fire", "Leper Messiah", and "The Thing that Should Not Be".
I do have plans on mixing more songs, it's just a matter of finding the time, cause Cliff deserves it! This is a great project, to show the world that the bass in metal can do a lot more than people give it credit for, and to keep Cliff's legacy alive, giving people the opportunity to listen to his art in detail.
Call of Ktulu!!!!
abso fuckin lutely
I would love to see leper messiah with louder bass
The bass amplified really makes the sound thick. Great sound
Just wondering why you muted James guitar for the solo? It doesn't sound bad, just a little weird from being so used to the original
I took it out because I wanted everyone to listen to Cliff's lines during the guitar solo, nothing against James, he's a phenomenal guitar player and 90% of their riffs were all created by James. But Cliff plays some really cool melodies during Kirk's solos, that also happens on "The Four Horsemen", so I wanted everyone to pay attention to that.
I like it
Because he's an idiot that doesn't know what he's doing.
@@subzero8679 why so cold???? ;------;

Music to my ears!
It's like hearing the song for the first time again.
James' voice is so nice
Cliff forever! ♡ R.I.P.

PERFECT..
Dude....i am officially your biggest fan...keep em coming...R.I.P Cliff....😢
I wish Metallica had made more songs like this in the 1980s. Take Old and New Testament passages and make great music. A top 10 classic Metallica song!
Are they lifted exactly from the bible then?. Which parts?.
Sole Survivor i don’t believe that there’s anything lifted directly from the bible, but the song is about the story of Moses and the Plagues of Egypt

this is how all metallica shouldve been mixed
no man it's very cringe
Oh man this is fucking sick, i love the way you mixed the vocals wicked job man!!!!!!!
thx!! It's great to hear 1984 James's voice louder than you'd expect, lol
This is absolutely mind-blowing!! 🤯
And actually the first time I’ve ever heard Cliff’s bass properly in this song; he NAILED it!!!
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Respect to one of my absolute favourite bassists in thrash metal!! RIP Cliff; you’re an eternal LEGEND!! 🤘🏻
Its like listening to it for the first time again somehow
🎼 So let it be written...so let it be done.... 🎵
This is the best version I’ve ever heard🤘✌️ nice work mate
Wow, thank you so much, hawks4305!
The vocals were epic!!!
really
Thank you for the great music, in the great years 🎉
Simply PURE GOLD. Awesome job!
I'm new to your channel and have been loving what I've been hearing. A whole new dimension to songs I've heard a million times. And Cliff's playing deserves this treatment.
This mix is amazing
how could there even be a dislike for thia? Happy Belated Bday Cliff! \m/ \m/
Awesome … in this version can be heard gorgeous bass riffs that are hidden in the original version. Cliff is a force of the nature…. The bass sound beats and flows at the same time. Creeping death is one of my favorite song of all time but this version is really special. Cliff is an out of class. I speak in the present because for me Cliff is still alive in his music because music was his life. Love you Cliff
I'm in love with it
Enjoyed this immensely...
Perfect!! Fantastic!! Accellent!!
That's how I would mix it 😀 I love the originals, but louder Cliff elevates their songs to another level, man.
You can hear his fingers grind over the strings
That's a fkkn heavy metal bass guitar player right there. 🤘
It's not loud loud enough!
Yeah that's what I said. I think it just needs to be a little bit louder. I don't have any problem hearing the bass, just with my personal taste I would have it higher. Uploader disagreed with me about it, and I respect his reasons not to do it.
I think the bass is perfect on his version of Fade To Black, that sounds great. But I guess it's easier to hear the bass since the guitars aren't as loud as they are in this song.
Miss you so much Cliff.
Awesome job on the revised mix dude. It's basically perfect now!!! ;-)
Fuck yeah it sounds awesome! I’m hearing shit that I’ve never heard and I’ve had this on cd and original vinyl!
really cool...i love it when the bass stands out like this. however, i do also love the dual guitars (especially when they're playing off of eachother). hmm...
You're basically describing how Iron Maiden works. Steve Harris's bass is mixed really loud, but the way the guitars are arranged, they don't get in the way of his bass, so it's the perfect situation for 2 guitars with a bass providing rhythm. But Metallica is different, cause it's much more riff-based and guitars are much fatter - Iron Maiden focuses on high-pitched guitars playing fantastic themes over changing harmony (Em, C and D). I love both bands and sometimes I feel like listening to Iron for a whole week, other times Metallica for a whole month, lol...they're both great!
+Alex Tamulis bro please do it on the call of ktulu track..
Sounds bad ass...😜😜😜😜😜🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😎😎😎😎😎🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨😲😲😲😲😉😉😉😉🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😎😎

So awesome man! Thanks!
Not sure Lars would appreciate but I really do. I eared all the songs you worked on, What a fucking job, man. Really like how it sounds
Fantastic mix
They really did Jason and Cliff dirty
this is how bass should mix in all metal records
Very Nice!
Mustafa Şatıroglu i like katy perry
bogey the dog i like her too. that boobies especially
Amazing!
+Johan Engqvist Now we get to actually hear the bass, lol! This used to be the hardest album to hear bass frequencies, I'm glad I was able to remix some of its tracks, now I only listen to these new mixes when I'm driving!
Fucking amazing, man. Since I meet the album, was thinking that this is the way that should sound the Bass
Sounds great. like how you adjusted other things besides bass toi.
Thanks, Jonathan! Metal all the way!
very nice work! I end up missing the rhythm guitar when you turn it down, but great job giving live to cliff's bass, which sets the mood for each song
I really like the idea about seeking revenge for the bass guitar!
\m/
Perfect!!!!!!!!
Suggestion: Blitzkreig
I don't think you undertsand how this process works. You don't juet bass boost it, you take the original multitracks and do it *properly*
@NotSnarl That's not exactly easy when the tapes are kept by Metallica themselves.
I thank god that james-lars combo and mix-man were not as silly as you guys back in the day.
So good 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Awesome!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😎😎
Kill, Ride and Master are the best Metallica albums
nice remix!!! this is cool!!
Live you can hear the bass almost like this, Robert is amazing
harvester of sorrow plisss really loud bass
🤘🤟
I did it! Please check my other videos :) Thank you Roduiguez
nice, you can actually hear the bass, wish they released it this way.
While Hetfields Vocals are Incredible , i dont care for how the mix has changed the sound of the vocals.
He started doing that danzig for awhile now he's trying to do this again. Band sucks after cliff though.

Fucking amazing!
The call of ktulu please../
Can’t 😭
It cant work because there is no isolated bass track.
Andriy Vasylenko did a bass boosted version, with tabs.
Look up the live versions from 84 and 85, Cliff's bass literally sounds like a monster. Best example of why James said he had to keep up with him instead of vice versa.
i dont know how anyone can not like this. plebs.
They should re master all the early albums like this .they would sell millions more. I know I would buy them all. This is almost priceless sounding
there are
The title should be "If bass players would mix a song" lmao sounds mean tho
There's a thing heavier than heavy metal. Its this gem.
So F.cking Great
Dude you have 6.66k subscribers, that's good luck
On Metalocalypse they make fun of the way Metallica (and other metal bands) mixed bass to fucking nothing. Hearing this song bass only has blown my mind, I never knew just how awesome Cliff Burton was! But this remix is how the bass should have been all along.
Thank you so much, A. I'm so glad you liked it, I feel the same way toward bass in metal, there are many ways today to keep the low end punch of guitars and bring the bass to normal volumes, that way all listeners can benefit from the experience.
Definitely Cliff touch on this mix
This is honestly how it should've been mastered and released.
thanks a million, Synster666!

Much heavier sounding with the enhanced bass!
