  • My favorite aerobatic plane! In model AV8R episode 134, we test the waters on a possible new series for the channel - the "From The Hangar" series. In this series we hope to show and fly some of the planes from our hangar that otherwise might not be featured in a video. We have some awesome pieces, newer and older, and we thought our viewers might like to check them out. We kick it off with a bucket list plane for Adam, our Hangar 9 Christen Eagle. Let us know in the comments if you'd like to see more of this series!
    This is what's in our Eagle and, at the time of this video's release, the plane and equipment are all still available. Here are links so you can check it all out -

    My all time favorite aerobatic plane. I saw the Eagles Aerobatic team many many times out here in California growing up! I have a full set of the original posters back from the 80s that you talk about. And the Christianson plant that manufactured these aircraft was in Hollister California and I had a friend who used to take me there on their fly-in weekends for the kit builders. Always been an aircraft that’s very close to my heart! Thanks for sharing this!

    I really like the new series "From the Hanger", not just great planes but why you have some in the hanger. What a great demonstration flight of that plane in action, everything doesn't have to be 3D to be amazing. May have to add one of these after I finally get my dream the Art Scholl Chipmunk.

      Well thanks Micky, but that defeats the whole purpose of the series. The point of it is to be able to show our older planes as well. We can do reviews or other types of episodes on planes still available.

      I see your point and your segment was fun to watch. I wasn’t really talking about the Eagle as after being chronically out of stock forever, it is available, (at least for now.) How do you rate the quality of the ARF and it’s ease of assembly?

    Excellent flying and video. I like the scale flight performance. Thanks for sharing your background with the CE - I can see why you are so fond of this plane.
    Your video brought back some pleasant memories for me. I saw the Eagles Team at an air show - and was able to sit in on a presentation they gave in one of the big tents. It was interesting to hear their discussion of their routine. (Wish I had been able to capture it on video.) They took a few questions - so I asked about how many Gs they took and during what maneuver. They said when they opened the show - they came diving down to stage center and did a snap roll - all three - in formation - line abreast. And it was not for very long, but that was their highest G load. ( Don't remember the figure. ) With another question, they commented that their snap roll was flown with some finesse. They didn't just slap full elevator to make it snap roll. ( That would have absorbed too much energy. ) They actually used just the right amount of elevator, rudder, and aileron to get a snap that was quick - but that was also able to fly through the maneuver and keep up their speed / energy so that they could continue with their smooth, flowing routine - on to the next maneuver. A great flying team !

    I loved the personal connection/background story and photos and absolutely think you should continue this series. I think I posted here once before maybe to say I have had this plane for about 10 years and it has well under 10 flights. I bought it second hand for about £200, which was a bargain. Runs 8S as 2 x 4000 packs. First it would have engine failures after take off (turned out the builder took an average prop value between the 6S and 8S recommended props so it was exceeding 100A and making the ESC cut!). Once this was sorted, it did its best to kill itself by dropping a wing at the worst possible time and with no apparent aggravation or excessive alpha involved. Each time I visualised a massive balsa shower, calmed down and locked it up for a few more years before trying again. Now I realise that it's too heavy so will source a 6S motor (and maybe a lighter ESC although I'll still need a decent rated one) and use the 5000 6S packs that I bought for the FMS Pitts V2. (I bought this because the Hangar 9 one scared me - it's a total pussy cat!) The one mod I have done is to add a 'safety switch' so I can turn on the aircraft once the battery and hatch are secured. I hid it under the rear of the cowling where the cowling is wider than the rest of the fuselage.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks man, we will definitely keep the series going. Yep, using a lighter power system will help yours. Also check for warps on the wing tips. Even the slightest downward warp...even just on an aileron...could cause that wing drop. Mine actually has a docile stall much like the FMS 1400 Pitts, although it happens at a bit of a faster speed. The H9 is heavier.

    Gorgeous flight of a classic model. I have had the old 8S version for a decade now and always thought it flew heavy for its size. Did it require a lot of lead in the nose when u reduced batts to 6S5000?

    Adam since we were flying the similar looking but smaller Seagull CE years ago with a Power 10... I always wanted the larger Hanger 9. What a beauty of a Bi-Plane, but shied away due to the size and weight. After watching your video I actually have a spare 6S power system to use, so I've gained a new enthusiasm to get one. Nice landing as I know they like to bounce if not careful. How many amps are you pulling with the 16X7 prop ???

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  3 місяці тому +1

      Hey Tony! Man I remember that little CE from Seagull. I never did get that one to fly like I thought it should. Just never pleased with it. The H9 is a whole different world. If I remember right you like the little Seagull, dude...you'd adore the H9. So much better in every conceivable way (other than being harder to store/transport). I have looked at the telemetry but I can't remember the amps. Gary Wright and I talked about that new power system a good bit. he said you can run as high as a 17x8 with throttle management, and that 16x8 was ideal. I couldn't find a painted Xoar 16x8 in stock so I went with a 16x7 that was with the intention of changing it later. It has so much power on the 16x7 I'm just going to keep it ion there. I get 6 min flying the way you saw, cells at 3.75 to 3.8 when I land with a 5000 6s.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks. We are actually planing on a comparison to show the difference in balsa/foam planes and the advantages/disadvantages of both. The H9 is about 1 1/2 lbs heavier than the FMS 1400 Pitts. They fly very similar, and stall similar, although the stall with the H9 happens at a faster speed because of the extra weight. The H9 also penetrates in wind better...one of the advantages of a bit more mass. The Pitts being lighter is easier to land. The H9 has more power...which you have more control of with an ARF.

    I have always liked the CE, especially the one from H9. Was all the flying, which was great, done on one battery? Back when I was looking at this plane it was about $90 cheaper. I was going to go glow since I have a YS91 less than 2 hours on it but was not sure if it was enough power. I do remember the show That's Incredible but must have missed the one with the Eagles. I do remember always wanting an EZ Christian Eagle but it was beyond my flying skill and budget back then. I like the ideas of the In the Hangar series. Keep up the great work. In any case, I believe you have the PZ one, I'd love to see a video of that one. It might be one of the worst planes to scale from the populars WW2 Warbirds, but still is my favourite and I don't think that will change in the near future haha

      Thanks man, glad you found us and glad to have you as a viewer! Our PZ 109 is kind of a hot mess...it has been beat to death so I'm sure it doesn't fly as well as it did when new. Both the FMS and DF fly well, but the FMS flies a bit better as you might expect from a bigger plane. As for scale fidelity they all are off in several places but the DF is the closest. I'd like to see a 1.5 or 1.6m version from E- flite or FlightLine.
