I read some of the other comments and I could not agree more...this is some good stuff! Not only in terms of how you presented it but also your voice!! damn... Please keep giving out more stuff like this, its great!!
If you did not, then I'll share a useful tip with you (that I learned from another video and it helped me so much!!) - in order to find the harmonizing note, then you have to find the 'Mi' of that particular note.. Like, in this video itself, I had trouble finding the harmonising note for the second starting note (the one at 2:30), but in your mind, if you keep that note as 'Do' then sing the Do Re Mi from that note onwards, then the 'Mi' will be the harmonising note.. It fits perfectly!! I hope that did not confuse you any further.. I shared this because it helped me so much!!!

Same here! I think the challenge is to know if you should harmonize in the higher or lower note. The other day I randomly harmonized to Ed Sheeran's Perfect, but that's the only song I managed to harmonize on my own... I tried a bunch of other songs and I can't harmonize at all =(
Dude. You helped me a lot with harmony. The only tutorial that ACTUALLY helped me from start to finish. Thanks for making this short and quick series mate, appreciate it :)
I love that you actually let the watcher sing along, in other singin lessons I have seen is it only they talking to everyone, but you make it like you really are talking to me :) good job on that
This video changed my entire perspective on vocal harminy! I've taken the first step! It's the first actual video to break down harmony for beginners... where it actually makes sense! thank you! ❤
Super helpful! I can naturally find harmonies, but I've been having trouble teaching others to find them. Thanks for doing this video! I hope it helps.
This is super helpful, thank you! I always sing low/deep and I find it so hard to sing with my sister who sings very high-pitched. I can't sing that high but I always find myself trying to match her and it's frustrating.
Hailey Janney hey girl! So this comment is old and so I’m curious, did you develop the ability to find harmony on your own? This is my current struggle and so I’m curious to know if you got it!
@FlorMaria Thanks! To answer your first question, I know letting people in to see what you've poured your heart into can be a little scary; music in particular can feel as personal as it gets. All I can say is let your love of music overtake your fears. If you have ideas burning inside your head, you have to get them out. If there's music in you, then that's a part of who you are, and maybe your friends and family need to know that about you. :) For a microphone, what to get depends a lot on your budget and your goals, but in general you'll want a large diaphragm condenser (if recording vocals). As a starting point, I really recommend the build outlined in this video: ua-cam.com/video/LuiJcFfDsH8/v-deo.html A common alternate path to that is to just use a USB mic. I don't use USB mics, but I've seen recommendations in the comments of my videos for the Blue mics, both the Snowball and the Yeti, and I've read good reviews of the Shure PG42-USB. USB mics definitely have some trade-offs in terms of flexibility and sound quality, but they're also simpler and cheaper than a full studio build. Video editing software depends on your system and personal preference, but the top programs for PC are Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. I don't use a mac so I've not much insight there. In terms of how to compose or improvise harmony parts, that'll require a longer answer that I had better address in a future video.
Hey dude, you are one tutorial video that worked for me for real. I see tutorial videos just to entertain myself or just passing time but dude. You showed me a way.....thank you. 😊
2:45 MAN I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I GOT IT dude this video was so nice! You’re really good at involving people in videos rather than just lecturing. Totally checking your other videos after this :)
Great practice ! Found my own choruses to be way more interesting using harmonies. I would love to see a video with you explaining some live performance tips - Showmanship/dealing with nervousness/what microphone sound settings to go for. Keep up the good work!
I swear to God this is the best channel on UA-cam hands-down and my favorite too and I only just discovered it today! Thanks dude you rock!!!!!!!!!!! And God bless you!
I love everything about this-your teaching, style, your voice, your enthusiasm and friendliness, the visual aid and your effort, even the music you chose for the example! For this, I subscribe!
You are a brilliant teacher! Thanks for putting so much effort into this - this is really the first time I see someone giving a really good visual and auditory explanation.
"did you get it?" no, not at all. i don't even sing. i have no idea why im watching this. thanks UA-cam for suggesting this video. oh and guy, nice voice!
It's easy to get caught up in the idea that harmony means maintaining the same space and direction with the melody at all times. For me, this probably comes from looking at choir and sheet music, or listening to records. This video shows how one can think of it as two melodies doing their own thing, such as one moving down while the other is moving up, and even crossing each other. The notion that one is going to always sing in thirds, fourths, or some other interval, or always moving in the same direction has to be debunked. This video serves that purpose, and is useful not only for voices but for instrumental arranging as well. Thanks.
By far this is the most helpful video I have come across when it comes to understanding Harmony with vocals. I was actually able to follow with harmony. You are a skilled teacher Saher!
Thank you for your help... I am a singer who has struggled hearing harmony... my ear is more tuned to melody. I can sing in harmony but only by learning it with help. I understand the principles of harmony, so my challenge for this year is to retrain my ear.
To add to what he showed here: If you have a chord chart for your song (easy to find these online), you just need to know what note of the chord that the melody is, and then you can sing ANY of the notes found in that chord. If you have a piano, you can easily find your note. E.g. if the chord is D major, just find a chart with chords and which notes are in them, and then find which one is the melody. All YOU have to sing is one of the remaining notes present in the chord. If the melody note is an F#, then you could sing an A or a D with that F#. This won't work on every single note, but it's a good start.
been using your video's for a while now, send them out to all my singers (church) to get them starting harmony. just wanted to say thanks, great resource.
Your tutorials are soo good thank you for posting them ive improved soo much strugguling with the harmony but as I keep doing it Im sure I will do just fine
this helps so much. I'm singing flood by Jars of Clay at church soon and could only find the high note in the chorus but because of this I know now it's a 5th below that. thanks broseph
you can apply chord theory and sing the notes of a chord, root, 3rd, 5th, (minor/major) then towards all the other notes of a diatonic scale then on to modes for advanced variations.
This is good! Another thing I find very important for harmony is developing a good intuitive sense of accompaniment. I like to do simple exercises going up and down the piano asking my students to harmonize parallel and not have to worry that much about keeping tune and yes use the other note as the reference point to your own, feel the direction that the original is going and use your intuitive knowledge of the scale at hand to accompany the melody correctly
+Saher Galt Can you please explain why the main melody goes up in pitch while the harmony will go down? I hear how they harmonize and its sound great. They sound great, but I want to know when to go up or down after I've harmonized the first note in a melody. I hope you follow what I'm trying to say...
This helped me alot. I took choir for 9 years ,but for the life of me I can't seem to not depend on others for my notes. But I'm in Acapella now so I'm trying to improve my confidence and singing skills so I can finally do a beautiful solo one day.

They sound great, but I want to know when to go up or down after I've harmonized the first note in a melody. I hope you follow what I'm trying to say...
GEmiliano182 it's really just comfortability while singing and a personal preference
Watch his video on writing harmony.
You choose to do a higher harmony or a lower harmony depending on how high or low the melody is and your range
Yes, what they all said above is absolutely correct - preference and your vocal range determine that.
