    Another reason to encourage people to keep their equipment updated: every stoke a person has keeps the sport and industry on progress and growth: I couldn’t stand seeing my brother-in-law ride his 15 year old Drake bindings any longer, which were held together with a combination of duct tape and chicken wire, so I gave him a pair of my fairly new Burton bindings (I went Nitro Phantom Carver and never looked back). He has told me since that not only is he impressed with how different and better the tech is today, but he also said he has gone snowboarding at least 5 or 6 more times a year than he was doing previously.

    That abrupt wa-pow upkick in the BSOD is actually the opposite of hydrodynamic. The lower and more gradual the rocker, the more planing effect you get by the board distributing weight over a larger, more even surface area. This is a fundamental of surfing, which is why surfboards have way more gradual and blended rocker profiles in the nose and not sharp and abrupt upward angles like that. Same with boat hulls. Ultimately, that wa-pow angle creates friction and acts like a bulldozer pushing through the snow instead of getting on top of it efficiently.

    • @wlp6200

      Great information. I heard the bsod has wayyyy too much structure in the base this year as well.

    • @SteveThompson-li2fc
      @SteveThompson-li2fc 5 місяців тому +1

      Good points, and I think the Gentemstick boards are designed more hydrodynamic like you describe. My solution for staying on top of the powder despite the Wapow is to just go fast as fuck.

      As an ME that's always bugged me about Capitas. Oh well, Wa-POW! and all their other markety terms sure sound neat 😂

    • @warrens4808
      @warrens4808 5 місяців тому

      @OneEightNate I am curious if you have ridden one in the pow (I have note). Your commentary makes sense, but the flex pattern was not factored in. Any additional thoughts?

    • @ElevenEightNate
      @ElevenEightNate 5 місяців тому +3

      @@warrens4808 I've only ridden it on groomers, but the flex pattern and camber profile doesn't mellow the angle of the wah-pow out. On a lot of camber boards with rocker in the nose, weighting the camber actually lifts the nose/tail slightly, but that doesn't affect the wah-pow section because it's even further out past the rocker zone. Wah-pow is such a sharp angle built into the structural profile of the board, there's really no way for it to mellow out even with a softer nose than mid section.
      Don't get me wrong, I think the BSOD is a great board. I'm just countering Tribute's claim in the video that the wah-pow upkick makes it more hydrodynamic. IMO, Capita's best pow profile is their Surf Camber in the SB Powder Racer. It's my go-to powder board because of the super mellow and blended rocker in the nose (combined with how wide it is). It floats better in pow than any other board I've ridden in my 20+ years on snow.

    I grew up riding in Tahoe as a kid. Moved to Hawaii after high school and working one season at Squaw. My last board was a Burton Custom 56 from 2000 I think. I rode it in 2017 and it was my first time on a board in 9 years…so I hadn’t rode it since 08, and the thing was still badass. I was the fastest guy on the mountain still, didn’t fall once, had a blast. Long story short, my oldest childhood bud who I grew up riding with committed to a Japan trip Feb. I’ve since looked at a shit ton of tech videos and ended up buying an Orca recommended me by a buddy I surf with here daily, grandson, who is a young Volcom team rider in Alaska. Then another buddy I surf with told me, why do you want a board with rocker if you grew up on all cambered boards. Fair point. So I bought another board, the new Longo Aeronaut. I head to Argentina in a week with both boards, and will ride for two weeks at Las Leñas for $500 (2 week ski pass $500USD). It’s getting toward spring, so I doubt I’ll need the Orca because I bought it for Japan next Feb. But, I’m curious to see how my riding experience will be. Like my one buddy said, we rode all cambers. All this C2 (Flying V) kine technology wasn’t really a thing. You wheelied hard in the pow bad kept your speed up, that’s all. But, after I got the Capita next to the LibTech, the weight difference was ridiculous. I had a LibTech in 95ish, it basically was a donkey and sucked. I got in Burton Customs as soon as they came out and never got off them. I’m hoping this Orca, with the new tech, isn’t a heavy gutless turd like my LibTech of the mid 90s. I’m sorta worried now after comparing it to the Aeronaut which I can tell is going to be badass. If I’m lucky I’ll get Pow in Argentina next week, so I know if it’s even worth bringing the Orca to Japan for the Pow rocker, or just taking the Aeronaut as a one board quiver and riding Pow how I grew up doing it, on full camber. My thought is: the weight difference between the Orca and Aeronaut is such that any benefits the Orca confers in the Pow is probably canceled by its extra weight when compared to the Aeronaut. What say your guys? Any thoughts? PS, since you have that old Sims board here in the video, thought I’d add that my surf buddy here that turned me onto snowboarding again was Tom’s VP at Sims in the 1980s, he invented the high-backs, and drafted Craig Kelly’s first pro contract with Sims. Pretty neat history so I thought I’d share...hoping his grandson’s Orca recommendation was a good one. ✌️🤙🤙🤙

    Great video guys, I've ordered a mega death for this season, in part down to your review! I'm really curious to see if I'm actually going to like this board. I've always preferred full camber, but made my first foray into the hybrid camber world last season with a Capita Ultrafear. I love that board in the park and for cruisey carved turns in good conditions. I found it left a little to be desired with more technical, short radius turns and variable conditions, which obviously makes sense for a park board, but I am slightly concerned I'll feel similarly about the mega death with that camber profile.
    I went a bit longer than I usually do for the mega death in the hopes of still feeling that spring out of turns that I'm used to given the longer effective edge, but I'm wondering if I'll end up gravitating back to my aviator 2.0 or tweaker pro for all mountain days when there's no fresh stuff... Curious how you guys feel the turning experience will compare to something like the aviator?
    Thanks for everything you do! I'm an english guy that spent a season in Nelson back in 2017/18 and miss it so much every time I watch one of your vids!

    People think the bsod is some super advanced rider board but that early rise takes all the teeth out of it, it’s stiff but actually pretty chill. The indoor survival is more flexible but more technical imo because it’s just straight camber. I actually think the indoor survival is a better board and even lays better trenches.
