    It's a slightly shorter episode this time, but that's **not** because it **wasn't** a lot of work! Special thanks to our Patreons and Supporters for helping us get this printer, I have a feeling it's going to see some use! 😎www.patreon.com/FanatikBuilds

    Excellent work, I'm a composite engineer, you should definitely print the bumper with some thickness and very little infill, the thickness acts like a sandwich panel and by spacing out the composite layers, it increases the parts bending ridigidity significantly. Then you can cover the front of the bumper with a finishing layer of fiberglass cloth and add some layers for strength in the backside of the bumper. Doing this lets you achieve very strong parts without using too many layers of composite material, keeping down the cost and weight.

    • @FanatikBuilds
      @FanatikBuilds  2 місяці тому +12

      The second set printed at 1cm thickness with 10% infill is vastly superior for sure! Thanks Amir, appreciate the advice and I hope you’ll like how it all comes together! Have a great weekend 🫡🙏

      Do you have the use of a printer big enough to make the piece in one piece?

      This should be a S.E.M.A car when it's finished the amount of design and engineering is stellar almost every aspect has been re-thought and re-engineered

      Gotta admit, as someone who 3D prints for other hobby things, I would've more thought in terms of merely shaping a finished layer on top of the print and then turning that into a buck to mold the surface for the actual part in something more durable and temperature-resistant.
      In hobby areas like cosplay costumes and props, we also use PETG filament instead, since it sands nicer (less gunking up the sandpaper) and is slightly more temperature resistant. Sanding and filling the surface is a pain, but a necessary one. Even PETG is not as temperature-resistant as ABS, but you don't have to deal with a chamber around the printer to keep the temperature steady because ABS as a material is such a "spoilt princess".

    I have to admire your work over the years and it is no way like a "conventional restoration", but rather a piece of art in the finest tradition, done in a small garage. I also admire your understanding and use of technology, which is beyond my level of comprehension! At 75, I simply don't compute. I have followed your build since day 1 and it has been a fascinating journey.

    Love that slight narrowing of the front valance. I think it really helps tie the styling in with the sides, where it curves down and under to the sill. Really keeps the design cohesive. And as a plus, it looks cool to have a bit of the tyre tread peeking out in the frontal view. 👍

    • @FanatikBuilds
      @FanatikBuilds  2 місяці тому +1

      It’s a very interesting look for sure! Makes it a bit awkward as there’s so much bodywork exposed to road debris, but some PPF should help to prevent too many rod chips! 🤞 Glad you like the design here, hope all’s going well for you 😎✌️🔥

    That is a fantastic process. It looks great. If the heat from the hot melt glue is a problem , maybe you could try Weldwood contact adhesive. The pins would keep the parts lined up ,so there would be no misalignment issues. And no heat. But, Weldwood might not be compatible with that type of plastic. Just a thought.

    • @FanatikBuilds
      @FanatikBuilds  2 місяці тому +1

    Harry here from Toronto - Wow, so exciting and inspiring. I heartily endorse the mods to move the design from a 280Z back to the Triumph realm, great work. And honestly, the 3D printed mould idea is first class and a great use of 80 hours! Hahaha. BTW, I so loved your windshield wiper video I've watched it about 8 times! Also your roof hinge videos get frequent views. Pretty sure this front end cowling will fall into the same category. I'm beyond impressed by you guys! Thanks for the good times.

    would love to see a little deeper dive into the design steps you used - i know thats not your channels direction but i am taking a similar approach for my Chevy Nova resto mod that unfortunately hit a major stall - I pull so much of your channel for inspiration - I even bought a 3d printer to for building the one off parts that i dont have the skills to build on my own
    Anyways - just another fellow Canadian that appreciates what you are doing over on the other side of the country
    From the West to the East - thanks for keeping me inspired and the dream alive

    With PLA, you might find that on a moderately hot day you are going to see a heck of a lot of movement with PLA. It simply isn't going to hold up. ABS is a good choice. Keep in mind that it's a bugger to print ABS without an enclosure. Which can be fixed with a cardboard box.
    Also, at Saturn we found that vertically hung panels (door panels, fenders) did good, while horizontal panels (roof, hood, trunk lid) couldn't be kept from sagging without reinforcing the panel to the point where it weighed as much, or more, than the original steel part. And using plastic parts forced us to widen the gaps on the car.
    Lastly, there are tricks like vapor smoothing that you can do to reduce (or even get out of) sanding. It's something that you have to be careful with, but really is no issue if you do it outside.

    • @FanatikBuilds
      @FanatikBuilds  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks very much for the advice, it’s amazing the breadth of backgrounds I’ve seen in the comments! I’m not actually planning to use the plastic in the final parts though! They’re going to be forms for fibreglass only… as mentioned earlier in the video I’m not planning a plug-mold-final part process this time… just 3D print-final part directly. More finishing work on the actual components, but much less work to get there! The PLA forms can be dismantled or discarded afterwards 👍 cheers!

    • @MrWaalkman
      @MrWaalkman 2 місяці тому

      @@FanatikBuilds Check out "Vapor smoothing" then. It'll cut down on the sanding. Apparently it does work fairly well on PLA, even though it was intended for ABS.

      @@FanatikBuilds Also keep your printer in mind for later addons for the interior, like custom gauge clusters for additional elements (engine/boost metrics and the like). Though in those cases you're better off printing them in ASA or polycarbonate, filaments that need a chamber and air extraction because of the hazardous gases their use pumps out. Some people gor outright poisoning from ASA fumes adding up over weeks. Should be possible to sand them smooth and spraying them with automotive paints.

      Thanks man, really appreciate it 😊🙏 I’d love to have tried that, but the livelihoods of getting matching panels with zero experience is pretty low! … no specific timeline really, it takes as long as it takes to be perfect! I’d love to be at paint stage next year, but we’ll see, there’s a lot to be done still. I plan on getting the car to nearly a finished state before paint, as I’ve seen too many projects get colour, only to need more grinding and welding done afterwards. Like Project Binky we’ll be doing a dry fit before stripping it down, but maybe we can fire it up while it’s still in primer 😉👌👍 cheers! … oh, and louvres are 100% a go! They are even in the 3d model if you look real close 💪

    One thing I might recommend (although it adds a couple steps…) is rather than using the 3d print as a mold, use it as a buck to make a mold to then finally make a finished part. This way you can make the show side of you mold very smooth and hopefully have good surface finish on the final part.
    The middle man mold here doesn’t need to be overly strong or thick, just a couple of layers of chopped strand mat should do. But then you could body work and sand smooth the face of the mold that will become the show side of the part while also (maybe) gaining back the dimensions that you would otherwise lose.
    Looking great though, keep up the good work

    • @FanatikBuilds
      @FanatikBuilds  2 місяці тому +1

      Yep, great technique, but as mentioned I’d like to avoid the time and expense of doing that! If we ever damage our bumper, I can always reprint a new form and jump straight to fibreglass! Just a bit of bodywork to finish though of course. I held on to the molds from my boat for over 10yrs before I threw them out and I shouldn’t have waited that long, just a waste of our limited storage space! Thanks though man, really appreciate it 😎🔥✌️

    I've done lots of fiberglass work, making a mold isn't that difficult and its how I do everything now. It is false economy not to.
    I did try 3d printing a buck for the fenders for my scale 37 chevy because of all the complex curves, but ultimately it required lots of work and it would have been easier to just make it in foam. So that is how I'm doing the rest. Great to see your progress.

      @@FanatikBuilds The key is to make the molds just strong enough to make one part or two or however many you need in 1 or 2 days. They warp in a matter of days. If you make them stronger, then you are doing it wrong as a budget process. The 3d printing always has flaws, and making big things takes hours and hours and can fail after 4 hours making the part garbage.
