My best picks for merengue music -
If you want the very fast merengues, try songs like "La Morena" by Oro Solido or "El Baile del Perrito" by Wilfrido Vargas.
If you want to do slower version merengues, things like "El Tiburon" by Proyecto Uno or even Pop--Tropical songs like "Dale pa'lla, dale pa'aca" by Mestizzo (or "Tongoneo" by the same group) are good merengue songs to dance to.
Even some cumbia-themed/vallenato themed numbers like "La Gota Fria" (Carlos Vives) are 'merengue-able" if you want to dance the slower merengues.

Thanks for the video. Another way to think about it is that the accents are on 1, 4, and 7 (left, right, left). On the other counts, the legs are in starting position.

Hello. I'm not saying you taught this wrong but did you maybe teach the Puerto Rican style? Because when I look up "How to dance merengue Dominican ", it's not like this. They stay leading/ accenting with one foot and don't switch.
Merengue is orginated from the French minuet, Haitian gave an African twist to it. The slaves used to watch the French dancing in ballroom. We brought it to Cuba DR and pr through migration
What get people off their feet? The African percussion, and the spirit of the African ancestors.
