This is spoilerey, but for those of you curious about what’s going on in the scene:
Hannah is pregnant with another man’s baby (who wants nothing to do with her or the baby), but she decides she’s going to keep it anyway. Throughout the series Hannah and Adam have been dating off and on. They were broken up, but when Adam found out Hannah was pregnant he wanted to take care of her and spend his life with her. Hannah decides to try it out but in the end, they go to this diner, and Hannah realizes they don’t have a future together.
On another side story, at this time, Adam has another girl pregnant but he doesn’t know it yet. We never find out what happens with that storyline, but I always assumed he ended up with the girl he got pregnant (which also happens to be one of Hannah’s best friends).

    For anyone craving more context/analysis...
Hannah and Adam were always fundamentally very different people. He is blunt, physically expressive, grounded in reality and not particularly in tune with emotions. Hannah is sensitive, over-analyses everything, seeks connections between things, speaks in metaphors, and is slightly removed from reality (she can at times be naïve or impractical). A lot of their relationship troubles were down to these fundamental differences. They just don't understand each other in enough ways for their relationship to be fulfilling long-term. On some level, they both already knew this, but neither had the courage to face it.
It's complicated loving someone. You don't always fall in love with your soulmate. Sometimes you fall in love with someone completely wrong for you, like Hannah and Adam did.
    Back to the scene...
It's in this moment, when Hannah hears Adam's effective proposal and how emotionless it is, that she can't hide from the truth anymore. She can't keep pretending this is going to work. She realises the right thing to do is to end it. Adam, on seeing Hannah's tears, smiles, hoping to steer her back into their previous light-hearted conversation. But then, really seeing her, he too is forced to face their incompatibility. They both know they love each other but that they aren't right together. Love isn't enough and they are going to have to say goodbye. This is what makes it so heart-breaking and tragic.
EDIT: For anyone interested in psychology, I think Hannah and Adam were originally drawn to each other by a trauma bond. She seems to have anxious attachment and him, avoidant. They are obviously different and not right for each other from the start, but crave something from each other (validation/acceptance/love). Their eventual goodbye can be seen as a positive moment of growth (they both stop going after people who act as a plaster for their trauma wound and finally realise they both need to be with someone more compatible) but it is also sad because I think both of them feel this rejection from their trauma bond partner like a baby would feel rejected by its parent.

For me it's Adam's face. I've felt myself make that exact face. You smile somewhat foolishly, hopefully. You look at her and you just can't help but smile. But then you see her face really. You pull away from your own emotions and your feelings of her and you really look at her, and you see she's not where you want her to be. Maybe she's not lip quivering and beginning to cry, but you can just read it on her face that she might as well be. And your smile slowly fades. And you know it's not going to come back for a while.

Since I have my own understanding of what you meant; I needed to write that reply. It feels like a needed to get that off my chest. So thank you for stating something that spoke to me.
I have a theory. It is something girls can't seem to grasp about being a man. That emotions are forcefully kept in check and that is NOT a choice. It is testosterone and nature and instinct. To not react until you lock yourself in a cave and remove yourself from society. That brings with it the simple fact that you kind forget how. Even though you need it, want it, seek it and long for it, you. JUST. CAN'T. CRY.
I've tried and tried to explain but all I get is some boiler plate reply fashioned from their own understanding about the world. Once I got a reflection from a coworker on how she never saw her father cry once during her upbringing. It was almost stated in a blaming fashion. But no thoughts as to what that really actually meant about her father or possibly how hard that must've been for him.
I digress. But the fact remains, that getting the privilege of feeling like this is very very difficult sometimes. But oh so powerful when it does happen.

The long stare Adam has while smiling then it fades away hit before I knew the context. You can see the pieces coming together in his head after she says that without her even saying anything I mean the body and emotional language was there anyway but still. Based on the context of what I do know too I wonder why she didn’t tell him and then they have the questions about what they’re gonna do when they get home and both know deep down it’s over I don’t get it makes me wanna watch it tbh.

  • @anthonyfranco88

I don’t get why the conversation veered off like that. They spent the whole day making, what seemed like, legitimate plans to raise this baby. What realization did they come to over this soup?
Hannah is getting a real “grown up” job and is following through with that, and Adam has shown his knack for being paternal when he had Sample during Caroline’s breakdown; he seemed the most centered when having someone helpless to care for - calling Hannah “kid” played into that a little bit.
Maybe he realized that she’s not as helpless anymore. Even with the arrival of the baby, uncharted territory for her, she is not in need of him or his assurance like she used to be, and their relationship worked (sometimes) because they helped fill in those gaps. I think their relationship could have lasted if Hannah hadn’t left for graduate school, but she did - they were both able to grow while apart and they no longer fit when they met up again years later.
Or maybe they were afraid that their relationship was too cyclical and they’d make the same mistakes again. But they are different people now than they were when their relationship was the most erratic.
    Whyyy.

Two exs, the girl is pregnant with someone else's kid, the guy had got with her best friend. Guy leaves his girl, offers to help raise kid, tells her he still loves her, etc. They reunite for a night, which initially starts as happy and loving. They begin to talk about how they'd raise the baby, be a family, maybe getting married like the guy says in this scene. But it starts to dawn on them how outlandish the whole thing is, with the realization that none of that stuff can actually happen or would ever work. Neither wants to say it, so they continue the pretense through tears. There's no getting back together, no future and this is their unspoken goodbye scene. Girl goes home, guy goes back to his girlfriend.

    Hannah=Soup.
Adams(Driver) is perfection here, as is Hannah(Dunham)...at this point in their relationship... it's like watching a couple(or even our parents) that.... need to end it.
The ultimate passive-aggressive response, angry, yet agreeable, if only to not further conflict. Adams MO... and Hannah with the constant need to continue her trajectory towards success.
I'm glad this is a "meme", it's a fantastic scene. It's honestly "GIRLS," wrapped up in one Diner scene.

Adam comes back in her life to be the baby’s father. And at first Hannah agrees. This scene broke my heart because I realized that the characters were just no longer in love in that, and they probably would have resented ending up together, but deep down you still know they cared deeply for one another, and have an unspoken bond that none of the other characters had.
