Thank god we had this before the rest of 2020. Started out on a good, really hot note. So hot in fact that I needed to come back to this in the beginning of 2021.

I love how comfortable he is with just doing whatever he wants. He doesn't come across as awkward like so many actors do during the monologue. He just owns the stage and commands the room.
He seems to do well in front of a live audience. Not all actors are like that. He's well suited for Broadway.

I think the transphobic comment was a joke because of how awkward he was during the sketch and felt self-conscious like most actors are. SNL usually doesn't run bigoted stuff even if they're not politically correct.
At 3:56 he said, "I'm trying to drag this out." I thought it was a silly and clever reference to the joke he was about to tell, which ended with a punchline of two explanations. Python-esque, perhaps?

Watching an SNL monologue usually feels like a very famous person in front of a lot of people standing in pretty much the same spot telling jokes at their own expense (which is fine and i enjoy it). But Adam Driver's monologue here is a way different feel, like you're at your tiny high school drama club after school one of the charismatic kids in the club is screwing around on the stage during a mic check and improvising and cracking everyone up. Love Adam Driver's energy, honestly.
The way he saunters back onto the stage after threatening to kill an audience member is priceless

At every commercial break, you would see Adam going over the cue cards before each sketch. I don't think I've ever seen that level of dedication from a host.

Agree completely. I don't remember all of them but this has to be one of SNL's best-ever opening monologues. His delivery is perfect, especially the throw-away lines (like over-his shoulder to the band "you can hear that's better, right?") I'm embarrassed to admit I've not seen any of his films; I've only seen him on talk shows and SNL. (The Report is on my watchlist, however.)
@@JackNorth He has some outstanding films. 'Paterson' is amazing. That's on Amazon too. If you want to see him do comedic roles, he has some great comedic stuff in 'What If' ( he has a supporting role opposite Daniel Radcliff) in that, and also 'This Is Where I Leave You'

This was a really great monologue. I loathe when they bring out cast members to do terrible jokes whenever a non comedian is the host, it's so refreshing to see a talented actor just able to perform a solid and hilarious routine all by themselves.

Something I just realized, Adam Driver does all these sketches on TV (be it Kylo Ren in Undercover Boss, the John Oliver bit, etc.) and it feels real. I don't know if he just has that much talent or if he is just really committed to everything he does. I guess a mix of both.
Adam Driver might be the most underrated man in Hollywood today, this man is golden.

John Mulaney often says that when hosts come on they never fully have the opening monologue finished until the show is 30 mins or less to air. This really shows that off, it also shows that you don’t always need a fully finished monologue😂😂
Honestly I think they gave him a little monologue and he ignored it and did one off improv, based on how the vibe of it feels
He seems more like a Marine that got lucky with acting than a big actor who happens to be a Marine. If that makes sense, he just seems so normal and genuine like us and less scripted and polished like them
Except this lucky Marine studied at Juilliard, one of the best acting schools in the world.

When he was 19, he tried the whole move to Hollywood penniless to try and make it as an actor. After failing miserably with that, and having to move back home (embarrassed from his failure, and with no direction or plans for his life) he decided to join the Marines along with many of his high school buddies. He fell in love with it, and made many friends due to the camaraderie. But before he was to be shipped off to Afghanistan, he suffered injuries which not only kept him from going, but was also discharged from the Marines entirely. Feeling guilty being left behind while his friends went to risk their lives, he returned home. It was then that he decided to try acting again, and this time he got into Julliard.
I highly recommend watching his Ted talk about how being a Marine helped him become a better actor. It's not too long, and he's a great storyteller. If you enjoy Adam Driver, you'll enjoy this too!

Man alive!! This really opened my eyes. Not only does he inhabit each one of his characters in a special way, he's really good at comedy, which is very very hard. His timing is immaculate. And he owns the premise from the beginning. Stellar performance.

He nailed that. These things usually have a forced air to them as the actor is out of their wheelhouse trying comedy, but Driver makes this looks effortless.
