Industrial HVAC 101

  • I had to take a service call at an Industrial facility that I’ve been going to since 2004. The unit I was currently working on is located on a crane roughly 65 feet off the ground. I had repaired this unit after a massive fire that nearly took down most of the plant. The unit is 460v 3ph, In a very harsh dirty environment and limited time to work on the unit. Generally I like to do a good thorough cleaning before working on any of these units. By doing a good thorough maintenance it allows me to start fresh and with the basics. Always make sure you wear your safety gear and protect yourself at all times. The equipment in this facility are put to the worst of the worst conditions and require constant attention. I like to shoot these videos for future techs to show them what they may run into in the near future. These calls are NOT staged and I try to be as thorough as possible. I appreciate all my customers for allowing some filming and try to respect their privacy. It is very good for a new technician to start at a dirty facility because of the constant service calls. If you like what you see please like, comment and subscribe. I film, edit all my videos myself any suggestions I'd really appreciate. The more subs, comments and views I pick up just thrive me to do more.
Thank you once again for watching HVAC Explained

Great video! I work in some industrial places too but nothing like this. As someone who records work as well, thanks for the videos especially stuff like this, it's not easy to record normal calls with camera restrictions and such. I'm curious how you approach your customers about recording, ive only done so a hand full of times at certain sites. Kudos to you my friend those are some harsh conditions.

Certain places I go to yes are limited with safety and security so I don’t wanna get anyone in trouble but I would love to Film more. I probably have close to 2000 random heating and air videos stored up I just need time to edit properly unfortunately I am still trying to learn that. Damn right.
I was using a compressed air gun to clear out a unit one time but first I had to blow all the soot off around the unit. During that process it stirred up that metallic dust shorting across the contactor causing a violent explosion taking out pretty much all the wiring inside the unit. Not fun to fix especially with no schematics.
Caution must always be taken when working around live equipment especially with dust.

Electric heat is 100% efficient but it’s 100% expensive when it’s operating. Electric heat is very reliable as long as you have power and your connections are good. It works well in many situations especially if flammable conditions are present. Sometimes the hazardous conditions can damage the resistive heaters by deteriorating the aluminum heat transfer discs on the side. Thank you very much for watching and commenting on my video have a great day stay safe.

Also I’d like to try to set an example to other technicians in this industry that we are not indestructible. I like to point out interesting environments that we may get exposed to in this industry. A majority of these locations upcoming technicians don’t get to see in a classroom. I may film a video coming up I have a neighbor that wants me to install a new furnace and air conditioner and I think I may refuse to do the job because she is a hoarder. I literally would have to walk sideways to get downstairs and to her furnace it probably would take me a week to move all the stuff just to get the furnace out. This industrial plant recycles hazardous material. It is extremely toxic for the environment and for the human body show precautions must be performed at all times. I literally have been going there since 2004 and a majority of my training was on the job, at this facility fixing constant breakdowns due to the conditions. They have had three major fires in the past 12 years. I have never seen a sprinkler. They utilize foam and other chemical agents to put out the fires. They try to keep all chemicals in separate areas so they do not have a chance to incinerate the entire plan just parts of it. I joke with guys up there once in a while saying the TV show dirty Jobs refused to come here lol. I have been in many Other factories, power plants and industrial plants but this one by far is the dirtiest. Thank you for your comment have a great day and stay safe.

Heating and air industry is not a bad field to know in general. The pay is good sometimes the jobs can be bad at times but that’s with any field. Sometimes you just have to find the best fit and what you’d like to work on. I started working at this facility in 2004 and we had some technicians either retire or move onto a different company so I kind of hung onto the account since I was new with the company and was trying to make myself look good. @hvacexplained9341  Рік тому

With our union yes, the rates are different. Typically in any trade Industrial rate is higher. It is not only hazardous but extremely dangerous.
In the heating and air field you must be alert all the time.
This by far is the worst of the worst conditions that I’ve worked in for my accounts. I took over this account around 2005 and held it till about 2019 before I start training a couple technicians to take over for me because I have moved to Florida and currently with a new company.
I begin my career at 19 years old, doing residential, heating and cooling for 1-1/2 years. I will never returned to residential. I help out friends and family only if it’s residential.
The money is not there as a technician. At least that’s my take. If you are an owner of a residential HVAC company, you should do well as long as you show good customer service skills and have reliable, honest technicians.
