    Installed a frequency drive just to run the fan at full speed. LOL! Man, I vaguely remember being in an ABB class back in the early 2000's on that drive line and here is what I can tell you...we ate chicken fried steak for lunch. Yup, that's all I remember.

      In that application they're used as soft-start controls. We put Mitsubishi VFDs on a pair of 600V 80HP blowers back in the 2000s mainly for this reason. The motors drove centrifugal blowers via multiple belts (a 1950's high-rise with central air...the blowers were over 6 feet in diameter) and the old hard-start motor contactors would result in belt slip (noisy as hell) and eventual belt breakage. Running the motor up slowly via a VFD resulted no trauma to belts, ears or pillow blocks.

    The 1st thing I check on VFD z is. Voltage, clean the heat sink and check muffin fan. This drive is just there for soft starting. Great videos, t.u. u do great work.

    Vfds on ex fans running full speed is often done by design engineering. They put in the drawings sonit gets installed no questions asked. Usually results in services calls or failures so good for the maintenance business

    You did a good job trouble shooting and evaluating issues. I suspect there was an incoming power issue and wonder if this VFD is set to resume operation after a brown out or power loss.
    The thing I find most odd is somebody installed a VFD to run a 3HP motor at full speed 24/7. A VFD seems like unnecessary expense & complexity in this particular application.

      My thought is they ran out of funds to complete the BAC, or that install is due in another phase.🤔

      it likely requires a soft start to not over-current and trip overloads/breakers or obliterate belts(need larger motor). also it doesn't make sense to use step starters or old fashioned controls on them anymore, likely voids warranty on all newer gear too.

  • @Jay-pu6cu

    I believe you need a jumper between 11 and 12 to get you start/stop working, this could be why you your speed command shows 20mah but wont run in auto. Also its seems drive is set 0/4-20 mah. Change it to 0-10v.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 3 місяці тому

      for sure needs a jumper there, as for the rest of the config, not a clue.

    Just a quick correction, the 24v on the drive is still DC voltage, it's not AC. To me, it seems like one of the parameters is not set right, as it should start up when in auto mode, and it seems like it was set to 0/4-20mA speed control instead of 0-10v control(since it's connected to 10v)

    • @realizator5567
      @realizator5567 Місяць тому

      In "HVAC default" mode you have to tie DI1 and DI4 inputs to +24VDC to automatically start the motor, if parameter 1608 is not setup correctly.
      Thats how i understand the schematic from 15:30
      I would tie those inputs to +24V bus, just to save up some time on future service calls ;P

    Why do they have all the VFD's mounted on top of disconnects and other drives? There are small cooling fans on the bottom to cool the fins on the back that collect dirt and need to be blown out at times or they'll over heat and shut off. I had it happen with those very drives.

    Not sure if it's even a concern, but the yellow leg on the bottom of the shutoff looked like it saw some heat and melted a bit at one time? Might have had an overload or overcurrent on that leg and triggered one of those error codes? Just an observation with what you had in the video. Hopefully not an intermittent issue you'll have to come back and troubleshoot again, but just another pair of eyes to share some input. Keep up the great work good sir!

      looks like all the wires are tape covered for proper color coding at 480V. the tape is loose on that wire end (yellow). I can see the lumps and spiral looking lines in all the field wiring they did through the conduits. they likely used whatever wire they had(other than green/white/gray) and color coded with tape. very likely under that you'll find all black/red/blue wires(common 120/208/240v coding)

    Lol....salesman had fun selling a drive to use as a starter. Whats the point of having a drive and no start enable or speed reference. The "black grease" is morw than likely whats known as EDM....Its shaft voltage going right through the bearings. Thats why shaft grounding rings are installed. You get shaft voltage due to capacitive induction between the rotor and stator. Its a common occurrence with VFD'S. The bearings get whats called fluting and frosting. The grease is getting overheated. Could of just put a cheaper soft starter or a part winding or wye-delta starter ( depends on how many leads the motor is )
