Thanks for the insight! Just fyi, links are a little messed up: Mini Grip kit and Folding Stands don't work, and Large and Small clamps and Water bags are all the Water bag link
Really Great suggestions, especially the water bags. I have a travel shoot this week and those are ideal to transport without a ton of extras being lugged around. Thank you for adding value🫡
Today I found your channel and I really don't understand why I haven't found it before. At this moment I am the pre production of my film school graduation documentary and your video's are really helpful! So thank you for that, I definitely subscribed to your channel :)
Some of the best content on UA-cam. Real world scenarios. Practical stuff. When I'm on a doc my car is always full to the brim -- but those reverse stands could change a lot for me.
I am getting great value in this channel - great work, awesome tips - useful and helpful and to the point. Keep it up man and thanks for sharing and inspiring others.
These are seriously good suggestions! I don't do a ton of travel shoots but I do 3-4 every spring, and I've been trying to slim down my grip kit so the bags are more manageable. This is very helpful!
I have, use everything in this video, except the stool. I don't carry douvetine though, too heavy. I use thin black plastic table cloths. I also don't bring shower curtains too bulky but have much thinner white fabic I can double up etc if needed. I have carbon fiber poles that screw together to hang them from.
Just bought the Matthews RoadRags II on this recommendation. Having a hard time finding the "how" when using these for sit down interviews. Hope to see content on your channel that cover this. Thanks again, Luc!
Nice one…I use the silks as diffusers for lights or to bounce fill light. The flag I use for negative fill on the opposite side of the key, or in front of light sources I want to block. The scrims i use less, but still useful. Hope you like them!
Luc, great stuff as always -- super useful and insightful. (BTW, the Large and Small Clamp links in the description both go to the Westcott water bag. )
@@LucForsyth No problem! Super portable and great modifiers for all sorts of situations. What I love is that they pack small enough to fit in a backpack but get big enough to diffuse the sun for exterior interviews. They're basically Manfrotto's super-portable take on the cheap 5-in-1 reflectors we all started with.
I’m currently in Doha, Qatar filming for music festivals running alongside the World Cup. Upon arrival in Qatar I discovered what a carnet is although not early enough to stop my gear getting detained by customs! Super frustrating. I ended up getting my gear back and have been able to fulfil the job but only after getting help from a local P.R.O. Lesson learnt. Carry a body separately and make sure I have the correct paperwork. Btw love the videos dude. Keep em coming!
I carry 4 empty sandbags (each has two zippers on each pocket) and fill them with full bottles of liquid (two bottles per pocket). Works like your waterbags, but can also be used with sand or stones or whatever.
Man I'm so glad I found your channel. You've got some awesome content and I can't believe you don't have a larger audience yet! Just a quick question but how many bags/cases do you fly with for a typical shoot? If this has been explained in a past video I just haven't gotten to it yet haha
Thanks, appreciate that! I think every shoot is a bit different, but it really depends on if I"m by myself or not. A large international shoot if I'm alone would probably top out at 7-8 bags/cases plus a folding cart that gets checked as well. That's about all I can fit onto the cart, so it's all I'm physically capable of moving without help. IF there's a team travelling with me, things change - I've been on a shoot with 72 pelican cases that all got put on a plane, so it can really scale up!
Luc, I can't believe these water bags aren't more popular... Are they lighter than sandbags (onces filled I mean..) because really, I really dont see the point anymore in carrying sandbags around if these water filled ones can do the job... I was trying to find some here in Barcelona and can't find them.. no even on the Spanish Amazon.. crazy
I know! They're not quite as heavy, but they do have zippers to attach more than one together at a time. I think with 2 of them you have about 8kg of weight, so close to a normal sandbag, but you'd have to double check that
@@LucForsyth LOL. I like packing videos and I really like packing gear. I have a two pass checking system. I pack at least 2-3 days ahead. Typically, if anything is missed, it’s glaring by that second pass.

Great video. Big shout from a documentary filmmaker in Egypt 🤩
Hey, thanks! I love UA-cam for helping to build an international community, great to have you here! 🇪🇬🇨🇦👊🏻
THOSE WATER BAGS ARE LIFE-ALTERING! I had no idea those existed. Thank you for posting!!!
Yeah, they're great! Happy to help
You are a legend. Thank you. I’ve been trying to bring documentation in the world of marching arts and your videos are gold.
Thanks Sergio, appreciate that!
A DP I worked with gave me one of the collapsible stool as gift a couple of years ago. Absolute bliss and it goes everywhere with me
Awesome! It becomes less blissful after 2 hours of sitting on it, but it's still one of my favourite things ever!

Yeah man, the struggle is real! Love those stands though, they’re great. Happy packing!
you read my mind with this video! thank you!
Haha, nice one John - happy travels!
Awesome. I was looking for light weight stands and grip heads for flags.. the two suggestions you made seem great!!
Im thinking of sourcing out my own water bladders to put in the cheap bags I already own. We'll see!
Let me know how they go!
They work great for me...good luck!
Fantastic, the most helpful video of the month!
Well that’s nice to hear!
informative video.
thanks John!
I can attest to the awesomeness of the Matthews mini grip heads. They are amazing.
Shockingly good right?!
@@LucForsyth yes, a cheap and light way to turn any light stand into a mini C-stand.
Great tips as always. Love the chair!
I love that thing so much....
whats up luc sorry if you see this twice but how do you travel with your v mount batteries? Are you able to check them?
I used IDX 98s, which are the max allowed on planes
Great video - exactly what I was looking for.
Glad to hear it!
Fantastic content! Would love to see what kind of lights your travel with to go with all the grip equipment!
Thanks Ryan - lights video coming soon!
Absolutely want this video
Same. I'd guess a couple of Amarants? 60x?
Agreed!

Very helpful video, thank you. Heads up: the links to the clamps in the description are incorrect -- they link to the waterbags.
whoops...thanks for catching that!

Awesome, glad it helped!
Excellent content. Thanks for sharing this.
You’re very welcome!
Amazing video! Thanks!

I think you'd like the Lastolight Halo modifiers. Those are my go-to but I'm tempted to pick up a mini grip kit and road rags too.
Interesting - never heard of them, but will definitely check them out. Thanks!

Great ideas, as a grip I approve all the gear you suggested, water bags are a waste of water though, I would use Boa bags.
What's a boa bag? Super curious!
@@LucForsyth compact sandbag, work with lightweight equipment.
I also use this chair 😂 great episode, thanks !

Another wednesday, another video. Your constancy motivates me! I would like to know how you carry all this equipment around the world :)
btw the Large and Small clamps link goes to Water bags
Thanks, that’s great to hear! The solution is a good folding cart and hopefully a camera assistant!

I've never seen a good way to store clamps though
Video starts at 2:35
Is that a betacam behind you?
I wish!
@@LucForsyth theres always a few hiding in storage in most towns.
really strange that in canada you use pounds and not kg....so confussing :P
Very! We use kilometres for distance but feet for height, litres for liquid but pounds for weight…makes no sense!
