- In the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, life on the Isle of Harris has been largely influenced by the practice of crofting, a small-scale agricultural tradition that has been passed down for generations. In this short film by Joya Berrow, follow the quiet life of crofter Donald John Macinnes as he tends to his sheep and cows in the staggeringly beautiful landscape.

Crofting is a unique agricultural practice passed down generations in this part of Scotland. If you were a part of this community, do you think you would be able to uphold this physically demanding tradition? Why or why not?
Rose K. Most crofters are part time as it is very difficult to make a living on crofting alone
Uh y
Your video was racist within the first opening paragraph. Hope you realise that. Disgusting.
this was absolutely amazing. the scenery was so vibrant. its always great to see life through another persons eyes
We're so happy to hear you enjoyed watching this short film about small-scale agriculture in the Scottish Isles! We love how we can witness the beautiful scenery from Donald's perspective.
”The side I’m on is as green as you can get”
As much as I love this, as a local (inner Hebrides) my community has already been so affected by rampant unregulated tourism (thank you Harry potter), so there's parts of my country I'd probably cry if I saw a tour bus arrive in. Big up BBC alba on here!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I was thinking about car trip around Scotland, but now, after that short, I absolutely sure that I will visit this amazing lands! Thank you, NatGeo!
I just couldn't get enough of that thick scottish accent, just beautiful
Its more of a hybrid of Scottish and Irish
It's a Harris accent
Good, honest hardworking people, proud of what they do and what they are, and rightly so.
I used to live in the Hebrides and let me tell you that on a sunny day, it really is the most beautiful place on Earth. However, be warned, the weather is brutal most of the time!
He surely does live on the right side of the fence. Just beautiful!
Beautiful, I wish I could live there!!
The scenery in Scotland is simply breathtaking, isn't it?
Minus the constant rain and the place is perfect
@@Rainaman- dont forget the midges and mossies
@@geoffpriestley7001 oh yeah, those too. Scotland is the only place where you pray for wind as it takes care of that problem.
Paradise.
Been there. what a beautiful place. The people, the land, the sea and mountains.
We're so happy this video reminded you of your visit to the Scottish Isles, Thomas! The scenery is truly amazing.
I live there
amazing place, maybe i should visit this place someday
I learned to love the Scottish accent but my first experience with their articulation was unexpected. A fisherman said "It's me torrn to shucka pun." After much research and queries I discovered that what the fisherman had said was, "It's my turn to shake a pan," meaning it was his turn to cook on the boat that night. Lol.
Life between nature is called Life
I wish I were there now....it's been a while. Having a Scotch on the rocks and reminiscing!😊😍🤗
Man that last sentence. I think that's what everybody is looking for.
I loved this , what a beautiful place ❤️
Much nature, such amaze, very satistying
Just beatiful
Lovely life no stress
Trust me there is plenty stress in crofting try garthring sheep in of the moor when the light is fading or hoping you wiĺl get a good prise at auction crofting is all stress and hard graft
Loved it!
would love to live / camp there for a few weeks
The majority of us Scots never really appreciate the beauty of our country.
polarbear109 just beautiful landscape
It is true. I know many that have never been to the Highlands at all.
Beautiful video
Beautiful
so simple and beautiful. thank you for this beautiful video
Great stuff as always.
There's crofts on the mainland remember
So nice of this any job for their 👌👍💐
Respects to the Scotts and Irish
Without the subtitle I wouldn't be able to understand what he says at all 😅
peaceful life
Lovely!!!
Ah bonnie Scotland
Nice shot😊
I envy this guy
It's beautiful there but the animals sounds got to me. I'm used to my cannabis farm in the mountains of Oregon.
John Doe All of my operations are in complete compliance with laws set forth by the state of Oregon.
My move used to live there but now we live in NY
Majestic cows
Too short. Those are strange looking hee-land coos. Scotland is beautiful 😭
There not highlands they are short horn cattle
I like how there is subtitles for a person speaking English/Scottish
Beautifully shot and told but I have no idea why a person speaking perfectly good English needs to be subtitled. It really takes away from the visuals and is totally unnecessary.
bebox7 i dont agree. Im of Scottish Heritage living in Australia and none of my Aussie mates can understand him!
:) Well I'm an Aussie who has never been anywhere near Scotland and I could easily understand 99% of what he said.
*passes a trophy* some people, especially hearing impaired or people who have difficulty understand their language in other accents might not be able to understand. I'm a kiwi who has been to Scotland and yes, some people have very thick scottish accents that are hard to understand in real life
Absolutely - subtitles/closed captions of course are there (and always should be) for the hearing impaired or anyone that needs them. My point was that it would be nice to be able to choose whether to see them or not on screen for those of us who can understand what he is saying as I feel it takes away from the beautiful cinematography and story.
“You feel this land belongs to you” - how very blood and soil of him. Fascism has spread everywhere it seems even the most remotest parts, what they need is a mosque and some African or Middle Eastern immigrants.
That is the same island that president Trumps mum, Mary Ann MacLeod, was born and grew up
clear as mud
beautiful until I remembered that all these cows would be slaughtered :(
Reneevee133 So what? The people need to eat.
Humans don't need to eat animals to survive. We can get all of our essential nutrients from plant foods.
Wrong! Humans need b 12. There are people who can't eat your vegan diet or they get very sick. There are also people who can't eat meat or get sick. Most of us don't have to give up meat and will not do it. Don't judge others and respect others diets.
Eloise Tugwell vegans love to push their diet. You never heard of people allergic to soy , people who can't digest plant matter well, people with low iron. Humans are omnivores it is basic science. Eat what you want but don't push it on others.
You do realise that if those cows where not eaten they would never exist any way I think I would rather have a life and then be eaten than have no life at all plus they have had a better live than any wild cattle remember the have had acsses to supplementary feed and acsses to health care also cattle farmed in that way helps A keep the grass and Heather healthy which allows them to take In carbon from the air and store it in the soil which helps fighte climate change and B helps crate habitats for rare birds including the corn crake
❤️❤️❤️
I can't see green grass...
Ok, I must’ve missed it, what is crofting?
MsKTMvalley small-scale farming on pretty rough land, usually cattle or sheep
Be still, be quiet.
Watch and see God move.
Are you high?
When the accent is so strong you have to put subtitles.
nice
Sad to see animals trusting humans so much, only to be betrayed by them... :(
VeganVixen humans eat meat and is fine as long as they have a nice life and a quick painless death. Not everyone is going to eat your diet.
They have a very good live there and have acsses to food and medicine which they would not have if we left them there also they would not have a life if they are not eaten at some point the way they are farmed here also helps crate habitats for rare birds including the corn crake and helps fighte climate change
Having experienced both, I can tell you that factory farms and Scottish Highland cattle farming are two completely different worlds. Scottish cattle have the best life possible. Far superior to what a wild auroch would have led. Please go see for yourself.
Mary-Anne MacLeod country.
I have a college friend who is from barra the island beside it and he said it was shite hole lol
What are those creatures and why is that man yelling at them 🤔
Is mór an trua é go bhfuil deireadh ag teacht lena léithéidí comhphobail is seo...
Tha thu ceart a'bhalaich.
#Pleasant living :)
👍🏼
Hlo
Forst
Nice video concerning group ownership of land.
BUT... animals are not products. #endslavery #meatismurder
without this industry nobody on those islands could earn a living
callumisgreat First, there, fortunately, is not an industry. 2) Oh no? No plants there? No other profession? Everyone raises cattle? haha
Blah Blob But there are plenty of cereal, grains and other plants to feed the animals, right?
lmao
Fernandogdc yeah. It was in the bag of cow feed that we can safely assume was sourced elsewhere.
Bullcrap! This aint Scotland, i havent seen one Mosque or Hijab in this video.
Why did Breivik kill Open Border people? This Scotland goddamit.
Wtf m doing on dis planet
2nd comment
Would look WAY MORE BETTER with a trump golf course. And turn those cows into Mc Donald’s burgs! MURRRICAA
Paradise.
