My father was a farmer all his life ,born in 1922 and the son of a shepherd , he fought through the second world war and hardly had a day off in his life , retired and sold the small family farm in 1992 , me and my 3 siblings had a great upbringing and i have some very cherished memories of our time on the farm an d my late parents , my mother died last year aged 85, never was a more true word said when the gentleman being interviewed said farmers just retire and die , my father died 2 years after retirement in 1994 , both sorely missed .

Interesting commentary, and nice to seem some awareness about West coast Scotland - but the auto-generated subtitles weren't very accurate.

Before large scale human habitation, Scotland’s would have looked a lot like the west coast of Canada, it’s the reason Scots went there rather than the US

....a Merchant bought two Goats from a Farmer for £860.
If the Merchant went to the market to sell them both and, he made a 25% loss on one and a one-third profit on the other.
If the total profit on the sale of these Goats was £30; how much did he pay for each ?
How much did he sell them both individually for ?

May I ask you a question? In Scotland do you take the calf’s away from the moms and place them in pens all alone? Do you sell cows milk to humans instead of allowing the baby to nurse? The common practice of the US?

We’ve farmed 1200 acres in Virginia for over 100 years. My children are 5th generation farmers. We raise crops, grow apples and raise beef cattle. We have NEVER taken calves from their moms before weaning time. Usually that’s at 8 to 9 months of age. Farming is hard. Long hours, low profits and hard to find good employees, but...it’s a rewarding way of life. At least we think so. City life isn’t for us. We care for our land, we care about the environment and we most definitely care for our animals. I admit, I get a little testy in my old age when someone makes an uninformed blanket statement about farmers and what they do or don’t do.

Perhaps if he was introduced to regenerative grazing, grain supplements for livestock and support payments for farmers would not be necessary. Reference: the works of Allan Savory, Joel Salatin and Greg Judy, among others. 😀

    • @barkershill

I think that is insulting . You are suggesting this man doesn’t know his job . Do you not think if there was some simple quick fix solution he and every other farmer would be on to it ? Savoury and Salatin preach farming to none farmers and make their livings from doing it .
