We are all entitled to our own opinions even Australians complain about Australia. To think Australia is perfect is more of a tourist thing or someone who just moved here.

Good onya Ross for providing a balanced counterpoint to this video. I think mental health issues are big everywhere as it's not been that long that we've been trying to get people to speak up. I'm in Australia and I pay $290 upfront to see a psychiatrist and get $120 back from medicare so $170 out of pocket but in saying that once I hit my safety net I only pay roughly around $30 out of pocket. So the benefits you get back if you've hit safety net are massive. Not once paid to have hospital treatment etc even if it's private MH wards I just pay my Fortnightly private health (which i use for a lot other things so get my money worth) and hospital is fully covered for MH my last admission in private was $65,000 and no out-of-pocket expense.

Australia has a great Mental Health Care system, my kid works at Kmart it's open 24/7 so you can knock yourself out shopping at 2am if that's your thing! He forgot to mention that Australia has rules and if you don't like them we will happily put you back on a plane to Belgrade✈😉 Coober Pedy is great to visit, Aurora would love it something different. I came to Australia as an 11yr old and am 81yr old now but have been to UK twice in my lifetime and hope to visit again once we can travel international. I always call Australia home
Coober Pedy: People started living underground for 2 equally valid reasons... 1: to escape the heat. 2: The tunnels were already built/dug. Because most miners were essentially poor, they couldn't afford above-ground housing and insulation against the heat was non-existent AND the tunnels became traffic corridors after the useable ore had been removed,. The miners were living there anyway so they expanded the tunnels into room sized places and eventually 'house' sized or rather multi-room places.
The issue of shops closing early is not a problem. Supermarkets in Sydney are open till 10pm. If you can’t get your groceries in that time you are not trying. Australia fought for the 8 hour day - from 1856. They wanted 8 hours work, 8 hours play and 8 hours sleep. The best way to live and work. The first steps towards a decent lifestyle with good work conditions. Then the world copied. Sadly it’s being eroded even in Australia, with 24 hour shifts in call centres etc. but it’s ok as long as the workers have the choice and are paid the “unsocial hours” rates.

Adding to my comment above …. Time Zones - I don’t even know anyone in the US, so being in a different time zone means nothing to me. Internet - This guy is talking about the cost of plans for mobile devices, which are expensive. But my NBN broadband gives me all the bandwidth and speed I need, and is reasonably priced. Dangerous animals - I have never been attacked by a crocodile in my neighbourhood (in Brisbane) - and not half as scary as the USA with grizzly bears, wolves, coyotes, scorpions, and rattle snakes. Long distances - don’t drive; get on a plane; no problem - I’ve been to Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, and Hobart, and haven’t driven to any of them.
#3 is so TRUE. When I lived in Sydney, cafes closed at 3pm, and the major shopping mall at my train station closed at 5pm. Greatly enjoyed the tone of optimism in his other answers though! Another thing, it might depend on where you are. "Sydnersiders" are not talkative or open with ppl they don't know, it sounds much more relaxed in Queensland. The culture is Sydney is far closer to London than it is to say Steve Irwin Croodile Hunter.

Everything works, people get paid well, and don't need to work long hours. Its like America or the UK without the problems. Bush fires in Australia are worse. The gum trees leaves are oily to prevent evaporation, but that makes them highly flammable. In a big bush fire, the heat front of a fire will evaporate the oil which will explode when a spark hits it. The reason the fires in the USA have been bad, is because they are in California where they grow lots of gum trees.

Haha, this was pretty good - enjoy your work. Coober Pedy is worth a stop on a tour of central and South Australia. That's a road trip that needs careful planning, but well worth it. To be fair, the original video is an effective filter for people you wouldn't want here anyway.
I actually use my phone as a wifi hot spot I have 2 phones, one to take calls and use as my permanent number and the other phone that I use for data, calls, texts etc, so that means i can obtain whatever is on special each month and currently over the last two years i am averaging a cost of about $29 a month for using about 50 to 100 gig a month. I watch LOTS of movies, do international business and many other things on it with no problems!

I found Canadians very similar to Aussies when I visited in 2008. Although I only visited Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary, the people were so much more open and friendly than their far more reserved American neighbours to the south. I could quite happily live in British Columbia. The rest of the country would be a little too cold for me in winter. -50c in Calgary and -40c in Toronto. @@ThatJohnstonLife

I've always wanted to move to Australia but how does one go around the visa and job offer conundrum? You need a visa to get a job offer and you'll not get a job offer without a visa.
The problem about making a statement about internet speeds is that there is a bit more to it, entry levels at say 25 mbps are sufficient for most needs ( indeed you can stream as low as 1.5 mbps ) however, different speeds are available depending on the selected plan and you can go way up to 250 mbps if you want. International comparison is based on entry level. So problem solved if you really want and 200gig a month? What does a person DO to use that much?
I think he must have confused wiki article on Black Saturday fires in 2009 where "more than 400 individual fires were recorded" with number of fatalities (173 lives lost - by far the highest loss of life recorded). He's clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed tbh.

Visiting Australia is great. I still would take the good old USA. Convenience, no COVID fines, where I live no lockdowns and sports all year round. I could go on and on.
Yeah mate, I'm with you on that bloke's voice; it really drills itself deep into your brain the more you listen to him. My parents immigrated here in the mid 60;s from Ireland (back then one of the poorest and most under-developed nations in Western Europe, before they started receiving all that sweet, sweet EU cash back in the 90's and all that "Celtic Tiger" shit went on) and they never once looked back with regret. Mum & Dad (who were newly married; they literally left Dublin the evening of their wedding day in order to head for Australia via Southhampton) stepped off a Greek immigrant ship in Sydney at Circular Quay with nothing much more than the clothes on their backs, a little luggage and about $10K in today's money in their pockets. They both had found fulltime jobs and a rental house within a couple of weeks of arriving here, and within 3 years had enough money saved up to buy their first home, the first of many properties they eventually owned. My parents literally lived the immigrant's dream of working hard, saving hard and reaping the benefits and gave myself and my brother a very comfortable upbringing and an excellent education, which we are both extremely grateful for. Times are very different these days obviously however Australia really is still the land of opportunity, particularly if you are prepared to live outside of the big, crowded and expensive cities like Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane; you can then live like a king in a large property in idyllic natural surroundings for not very much money, and still be within a couple of hours or so drive of these big cities if you really need to be.

Loads of plumbing jobs available at the moment, you just need to get your qualifications and experience recognised over here which isn't always a straight forward process. We don't have many mental health doctors because generally Australians have less to worry about. Generally we love our life and lifestyle. Less stressed people means less therapists needed, so the statistics in this area don't reflect the need. The part of this argument talking about stress and showing someone jetskiing in an awesome spot made me giggle. One of the leading causes of death in Oz is suicide. There are not enough MH professionals to service the need. Almost everyone I know is on anti anxiety meds and antidepressants. Every night working people set themselves up to sleep in their cars because there is both a lack of affordable housing and a lack of housing full stop.

BUT coming from Germany to Australia you feel like you're in internet heaven. First: the incredible price for a huge package. And second: the (in my opinion) incredibly good connection nearly all over oz :D In Germany you're paying on a good contract 20€ >> 30 AUSD for 5GB! Australia is a beautiful country I have been living here seems 1986, loving every minute of it, love my walk through the forests and animals if you don't bother them you are safe, and the driving part well I think we use a lot of courtesy and communicate well. I hope you are enjoying visiting all the other states now that the borders are open. I keep in touch with my family in central america so Internet is slow I hardly notice . I don't feel very isolated because the majority of my Chinese Australian family live in southeast Australia where I am. I have to agree that the internet sucks. My internet cuts out regularly. I might see if I can move somewhere where it's a bit better. I heard they have better internet in the newer suburbs.
'Pretty darn close to the equator'? Most Australians live south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The 2 are 1,621.5 miles apart. (2,610 km!) Would love to see this American walk this 'close' distance! Brisbane, the most northern large city, is 3,054.26 km from the equator!
Times zones issue is really a matter of perspective. If the countries that are important to you are Europe and North America then yes it's a hassle. But if what's important to you is India, China, Japan & Korea (half the worlds population), then Australia is awesome.
@@ThatJohnstonLife I used to live in Perth WA & a friend of mine worked for a company that organized medical tourism where rich people from Asia would come to Perth to get operated on in private hospitals. Most were from countries that had a medical systems that were not 1st world. It was also way cheaper than going to Singapore or Japan. The reason that Perth was favored is that it is the same time zone as the countries most of the customers came from. So in this case, the time zone was a money maker.
I'm from New Zealand and the only comparison I do is the people. Australians are so friendly and being a Kiwi I can assure you Kiwis aren't friendly at all. Kiwis don't even smile at you, they're always grumpy. It's because Kiwis are very isolated and racist towards everyone, they're always depressed and overly judgmental. Kiwis actually have more mental illnesses due to isolation. Here in Australia everyone smiles at you and has a warm welcoming smile every time they see you! One of the reasons I'm still here regardless of the high living costs and the extremely hot summer is the vibe. I cannot find the same vibe elsewhere. It's been 13 years that I've been in Australia and I still fail to compare Melbourne to any other place in the world. I don't like Sydney because it's overly crowded, but Melbourne is perfect. Melbourne understands me 🥰

I came here in 1974 by boat, to Sydney, as a 10 pound pom. It took a month. In the 2 week hostel provided by the government there was a young couple who flew over and had been here for a week. Londoners they were homesick and wanted to go home!
Lived in Australia for 10 years , travelled everywhere, did a full lap 3 years ago before I left and in those 10 years, only ever saw 3 snakes and zero crocs, every holiday I got, I was out in the wilderness , camping , so I wouldn't worry about it to be honest....

Ah, the isolation; the reason Australians have Long Service Leave. 13 weeks paid leave every 8 to 10 years to allow Australians to get on a boat for 6 week trip back to the Old Sod, spend a week with family and get back on the boat to go home. Even after planes became the preferred way to travel, we still get the 13 week LSL. Also, the affected speech of this guy is making my ears hurt.

Hi Ross...I recently came down here to Australia about 2 months ago...and of course starting all new here it's been difficult, prices for food, housing, vehicles, especially EVs which I love, are all expensive, especially Porsches! they're a fortune here compared to other places! And since Australia is pretty remote, a lot of "global" releases never arrive until A LOT of time after "global" release! But it's not a big issue really, but for people who really love cars, evs and non, its a little annoying if ever wanting to purchase. The climate here is nice, but is a bit wack, since in summer its rainy, which I'm grateful for since fires have a less chance of happening, the government is really careless, though the NSW government is decent ig, Overall it's pretty nice, Though if you're coming from the US, it's hard, but managable. And another thing personally I don't like is all the spiders, having arachnophobia makes it even worse. luckily I haven't seen a lot of them! 😅 Anyways, so far I would give Australia a 7 - 7.5/10, Not my ideal location, but not a bad one either! and I'm already getting an accent :) (hopefully I didn't sound too harsh, i do like it here

I will concede the internet speeds, they suck. Mental health is also really bad in the country just because of our culture. Whilst there are actually a heap of free charity places to talk about this, the culture, especially for guys, is you don't talk about it. All the other reasons are great reasons to live hear i think, and the big one i contest is places closing early (even though some places are open for crazy hours when they probs shouldn't be). This is the best thing ever. It means people actually have a family life because in the same way you can't get some random thing at midnight, you are also not working at midnight.

I'm in Australia and I pay $290 upfront to see a psychiatrist and get $120 back from medicare so $170 out of pocket but in saying that once I hit my safety net I only pay roughly around $30 out of pocket. So the benefits you get back if you've hit safety net are massive. Not once paid to have hospital treatment etc even if it's private MH wards I just pay my Fortnightly private health (which i use for a lot other things so get my money worth) and hospital is fully covered for MH my last admission in private was $65,000 and no out-of-pocket expense.

Australia fought for the 8 hour day - from 1856. They wanted 8 hours work, 8 hours play and 8 hours sleep. The best way to live and work. The first steps towards a decent lifestyle with good work conditions.

Sadly it’s being eroded even in Australia, with 24 hour shifts in call centres etc. but it’s ok as long as the workers have the choice and are paid the “unsocial hours” rates.

Time Zones - I don’t even know anyone in the US, so being in a different time zone means nothing to me.
Internet - This guy is talking about the cost of plans for mobile devices, which are expensive. But my NBN broadband gives me all the bandwidth and speed I need, and is reasonably priced.
Dangerous animals - I have never been attacked by a crocodile in my neighbourhood (in Brisbane) - and not half as scary as the USA with grizzly bears, wolves, coyotes, scorpions, and rattle snakes.
Long distances - don’t drive; get on a plane; no problem - I’ve been to Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, and Hobart, and haven’t driven to any of them.
You know he's wrong when he didn't even mention the magpies...
#3 is so TRUE. When I lived in Sydney, cafes closed at 3pm, and the major shopping mall at my train station closed at 5pm. Greatly enjoyed the tone of optimism in his other answers though!
Another thing, it might depend on where you are. "Sydnersiders" are not talkative or open with ppl they don't know, it sounds much more relaxed in Queensland. The culture is Sydney is far closer to London than it is to say Steve Irwin Croodile Hunter.

Everything works, people get paid well, and don't need to work long hours. Its like America or the UK without the problems. I'm an American in Hong Kong and needed to take a break from the covid rules here last year, and Australia was great.

Bush fires in Australia are worse. The gum trees leaves are oily to prevent evaporation, but that makes them highly flammable. In a big bush fire, the heat front of a fire will evaporate the oil which will explode when a spark hits it. The reason the fires in the USA have been bad, is because they are in California where they grow lots of gum trees.

I actually use my phone as a wifi hot spot I have 2 phones, one to take calls and use as my permanent number and the other phone that I use for data, calls, texts etc, so that means i can obtain whatever is on special each month and currently over the last two years i am averaging a cost of about $29 a month for using about 50 to 100 gig a month. I watch LOTS of movies, do international business and many other things on it with no problems!

I found Canadians very similar to Aussies when I visited in 2008. Although I only visited Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary, the people were so much more open and friendly than their far more reserved American neighbours to the south. I could quite happily live in British Columbia. The rest of the country would be a little too cold for me in winter. -50c in Calgary and -40c in Toronto. @@ThatJohnstonLife

The problem about making a statement about internet speeds is that there is a bit more to it, entry levels at say 25 mbps are sufficient for most needs ( indeed you can stream as low as 1.5 mbps ) however, different speeds are available depending on the selected plan and you can go way up to 250 mbps if you want. International comparison is based on entry level. So problem solved if you really want and 200gig a month? What does a person DO to use that much?

Yeah mate, I'm with you on that bloke's voice; it really drills itself deep into your brain the more you listen to him. My parents immigrated here in the mid 60;s from Ireland (back then one of the poorest and most under-developed nations in Western Europe, before they started receiving all that sweet, sweet EU cash back in the 90's and all that "Celtic Tiger" shit went on) and they never once looked back with regret.
Mum & Dad (who were newly married; they literally left Dublin the evening of their wedding day in order to head for Australia via Southhampton) stepped off a Greek immigrant ship in Sydney at Circular Quay with nothing much more than the clothes on their backs, a little luggage and about $10K in today's money in their pockets. They both had found fulltime jobs and a rental house within a couple of weeks of arriving here, and within 3 years had enough money saved up to buy their first home, the first of many properties they eventually owned.
My parents literally lived the immigrant's dream of working hard, saving hard and reaping the benefits and gave myself and my brother a very comfortable upbringing and an excellent education, which we are both extremely grateful for. Times are very different these days obviously however Australia really is still the land of opportunity, particularly if you are prepared to live outside of the big, crowded and expensive cities like Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane; you can then live like a king in a large property in idyllic natural surroundings for not very much money, and still be within a couple of hours or so drive of these big cities if you really need to be.

Loads of plumbing jobs available at the moment, you just need to get your qualifications and experience recognised over here which isn't always a straight forward process. I would recommend speaking to a visa agent to get you started. True Blue Migration Services are fantastic. Tell them we sent you

We don't have many mental health doctors because generally Australians have less to worry about. Generally we love our life and lifestyle. Less stressed people means less therapists needed, so the statistics in this area don't reflect the need. The part of this argument talking about stress and showing someone jetskiing in an awesome spot made me giggle. One of the leading causes of death in Oz is suicide. There are not enough MH professionals to service the need. Almost everyone I know is on anti anxiety meds and antidepressants. Every night working people set themselves up to sleep in their cars because there is both a lack of affordable housing and a lack of housing full stop.

Just one note to the internet topic: It's always a matter of perspective. Maybe you had great internet all over the UK. BUT coming from Germany to Australia you feel like you're in internet heaven. First: the incredible price for a huge package. And second: the (in my opinion) incredibly good connection nearly all over oz :D In Germany you're paying on a good contract 20€ >> 30 AUSD for 5GB! And then you're having no signal when standing in the city center of Berlin (Alexanderplatz) :D

Australia is a beautiful country I have been living here seems 1986, loving every minute of it, love my walk through the forests and animals if you don't bother them you are safe, and the driving part well I think we use a lot of courtesy and communicate well. I hope you are enjoying visiting all the other states now that the borders are open. I keep in touch with my family in central america so Internet is slow I hardly notice . The guy in the video is just one of those who thinks usa is america forgetting the other countries in that continent, sad, América is a continent USA is just part of it .

I don't feel very isolated because the majority of my Chinese Australian family live in southeast Australia where I am. I have to agree that the internet sucks. My internet cuts out regularly. I might see if I can move somewhere where it's a bit better. I heard they have better internet in the newer suburbs.
'Pretty darn close to the equator'? Most Australians live south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The 2 are 1,621.5 miles apart. (2,610 km!) Would love to see this American walk this 'close' distance! Brisbane, the most northern large city, is 3,054.26 km from the equator!
Times zones issue is really a matter of perspective. If the countries that are important to you are Europe and North America then yes it's a hassle. But if what's important to you is India, China, Japan & Korea (half the worlds population), then Australia is awesome.

@@ThatJohnstonLife I used to live in Perth WA & a friend of mine worked for a company that organized medical tourism where rich people from Asia would come to Perth to get operated on in private hospitals. Most were from countries that had a medical systems that were not 1st world. It was also way cheaper than going to Singapore or Japan. The reason that Perth was favored is that it is the same time zone as the countries most of the customers came from. So in this case, the time zone was a money maker.
I'm from New Zealand and the only comparison I do is the people. Australians are so friendly and being a Kiwi I can assure you Kiwis aren't friendly at all. Kiwis don't even smile at you, they're always grumpy. It's because Kiwis are very isolated and racist towards everyone, they're always depressed and overly judgmental. Kiwis actually have more mental illnesses due to isolation. Here in Australia everyone smiles at you and has a warm welcoming smile every time they see you! One of the reasons I'm still here regardless of the high living costs and the extremely hot summer is the vibe. I cannot find the same vibe elsewhere. It's been 13 years that I've been in Australia and I still fail to compare Melbourne to any other place in the world. I don't like Sydney because it's overly crowded, but Melbourne is perfect. Melbourne understands me 🥰

I came here in 1974 by boat, to Sydney, as a 10 pound pom. It took a month. In the 2 week hostel provided by the government there was a young couple who flew over and had been here for a week. Londoners they were homesick and wanted to go home!

Lived in Australia for 10 years , travelled everywhere, did a full lap 3 years ago before I left and in those 10 years, only ever saw 3 snakes and zero crocs, every holiday I got, I was out in the wilderness , camping , so I wouldn't worry about it to be honest....

Ah, the isolation; the reason Australians have Long Service Leave. 13 weeks paid leave every 8 to 10 years to allow Australians to get on a boat for 6 week trip back to the Old Sod, spend a week with family and get back on the boat to go home. Even after planes became the preferred way to travel, we still get the 13 week LSL.

Hi Ross...I recently came down here to Australia about 2 months ago...and of course starting all new here it's been difficult, prices for food, housing, vehicles, especially EVs which I love, are all expensive, especially Porsches! they're a fortune here compared to other places! And since Australia is pretty remote, a lot of "global" releases never arrive until A LOT of time after "global" release! But it's not a big issue really, but for people who really love cars, evs and non, its a little annoying if ever wanting to purchase. The climate here is nice, but is a bit wack, since in summer its rainy, which I'm grateful for since fires have a less chance of happening, the government is really careless, though the NSW government is decent ig, Overall it's pretty nice, Though if you're coming from the US, it's hard, but managable. And another thing personally I don't like is all the spiders, having arachnophobia makes it even worse. luckily I haven't seen a lot of them! 😅 Anyways, so far I would give Australia a 7 - 7.5/10, Not my ideal location, but not a bad one either! and I'm already getting an accent :) (hopefully I didn't sound too harsh, i do like it here

I will concede the internet speeds, they suck. Mental health is also really bad in the country just because of our culture. Whilst there are actually a heap of free charity places to talk about this, the culture, especially for guys, is you don't talk about it. All the other reasons are great reasons to live hear i think, and the big one i contest is places closing early (even though some places are open for crazy hours when they probs shouldn't be). This is the best thing ever. It means people actually have a family life because in the same way you can't get some random thing at midnight, you are also not working at midnight.
