Sony DCR-TRV103 Review, Demonstation & Test

  • From 1999, it's Sony's first Digital 8 camcorder and they certainly packed it full of features. Analog Hi8/8mm playback, Analog Pass-through, Microphone & Stereo jacks, Accessory Shoe, Manual Focus Ring, and Laserlink. For being 15 years old, it still works just as well as it did when it was brand new, which is a testament to the quality of Sony's product's durability.

    The viewfinder in this model is actually a little black & white CRT, unlike later models which used an LCD. It also tends to oversaturate the colors, unlike the equivalent analog Hi8 models. I guess Sony wanted to make the digital models look more appealing by having more vivid colors. The later Digital8 models have a more natural-looking color saturation level.

    I love this era of Sony electronics. It seemed like Sony's golden era where anybody who wanted anything high end would look at Sony first, at least for some stuff.
    I really like the audio quality of this camcorder. It's very clear and doesn't have too much tape motor noise in it. Nice little touches like a stereo microphone jack and a backlight for the smaller LCD are what impress me. And I like the silver painted plastic too, because that would have been cool back then, and mostly importantly Sony didn't over-do it.
    My one complaint would probably be the square spot of light in Nightshot, for some reason it just seems like they could have avoided that.

    This really is a nice camcorder, I wish they would make a slightly updated model that records HD to SD card. Compared to what you can get these days, that would already make a pretty high ended camcorder. But I don't think that's ever going to happen...
    The TRV103 from what I can tell was not available in Europe, maybe they didn't even make a PAL model of this at all. The oldest model we can get over here is the almost identical TRV110, I have a video about that one up on my channel.

    guess what, on this model down under the mic and plug in power looking at the front, in the left lower corner of the face of the cam recorder is a (covered by a rubber seal) hidden firewire dv in/out that can be connected directly to the computer...

    Nice vid! I have had this same camera since around 2001.It has been collecting dust for a couple of years due to not playing the tapes properly and blue screen on playback. I recently lost a hard drive that had a bunch of my movies backed up on and knew I needed to go back and re-do the backups. Sending them in is cost prohibitive, I was looking on Ebay for a replacement camera when I did some research. Turns out that a good whack to the camera, as per many threads online, corrected whatever was wrong. It is playing and recording just fine now. My modern digital JVC is krap compared to the quality of this camera. I am going to have to give it more love.

    • @stereophonicstuff
      @stereophonicstuff  4 роки тому

      There's no easy way to have it "stamped" on the video on the Digital8 models. However, a workaround is to play the video from the camcorder using the AV Out jacks and the date stamp turned on during playback. It'll output the date/time stamp over the video and you can capture the video from the AV out (instead of using Firewire).

I have a Imac from 2018 so no longer has FireWire but I use 2 adaptors Apple still sale to go from the newer USB-C to the much older FireWire and it works great.

      You'll need a Firewire cable (6 pin to 4 pin) going from your camcorder to pc computer. Your pc computer should have a 6 pin firewire port, if not you could buy one and add it to your pc computer. Also need a software to capture the video and converting and burning to DVD. I hope this helps.

      On older Handycams, if it has a VCR mode, the power switch will have a setting for "VTR". If it doesn't have a VCR mode, the power switch will just have a "Player" mode, indicating that it can only play back video in that mode, not record it.
