I was sooooo obsess with Gregg Jefferies in 1989 … I was chasing all of his 88-89 RC cards… this was when baseball cards were the most important thing in my life!! Great memories!

Back in '92, my 14 year old brother bought a factory gold set for $450 from a card shop. When we got home, #793 was not in there! We called the shop and the scumbag dealer said they were random inserts...it was obvious the set had been opened by them and resealed. We wrote a letter to Topps, and they not only sent the #793, but actually sent another ENTIRE factory sealed set!!!!
I'm in my 40's.There are 3 huge flops.Kevin Mass was huge after his amazing first half of his 1st season..Wally Joyner in 86 was another.Joyner even got voted to start the Allstar game that year..But NOTHING tops Gregg Jefferies.Former 2 time minor league mvp. When his rookie came out its was booked at $5.00 which was huge back in 88 considering most packs were still under a buck..
Ricky Jordan was one of only a few players who signed his card for me when I sent it to him. Back when I was about 12 years old and sending cards to players via their teams. Great memories and kudos to Mr. Jordan for being nice enough to send my card back signed.
PineKushDude No, it was Ricky Jordan. He was leading the league in batting at the time and he blew his knee out. My friend called me to tell me about his injury. He never was the same 😢.
I remember with 1989 Topps where if you got a Don Mattingly card in a pack, it meant you were going to get a Gregg Jefferies card. For some reason, it seems like Topps packed both of them together.
NY Mets Anthony Young 1992 Upper Deck = $20 at card show, bought it. Then had it autographed at Hot Corner in Brooklyn and asking $45 for it. Was offered $20-30 over and over, held out.... I threw it out in the early 2000's
Seriously hilarious video."Dealers proudly displaying Jeffries cards"! I remember watching Kerry's 20 strikeout performance that day. Wrigley was loud! Love your content
Your narration was on point!!! I started in the late 80's and everything you said about these busts was me. I was the victim of Jerome Walton, Gregg Jefferies, Kevin Mass...etc. Thoroughly enjoyed your video. thank you so much for bringing back all the bad memories. LOL

Great flick...... major flashbacks ...there was a ton of busts in 80s and 90s. I bought a ton of Monty Farris and Andy Allenson and this guy called Corey Snider lol
Great idea of a video! Love the Greg Jefferies segment. The 89 Topps was gonna be "huge". My pick is Cliff Floyd. His 92 Bowman RC dunking the basketball, the 93SP foil, etc.. He was gonna be big and didn't wind up doing anything.
I had a bunch of cards as honorable mentions that I didn't show in the video for some reason and Felix Jose was one of them. P.S. I got Blake's custom card...that was friggin awesome!!!! And the Mattingly cards as well! Thank you so much. I want to do a video but will probably wait for some other things to come in. Thanks again!
I hoarded Gregg Jefferies cards in 1989, and that included buying loaves of Nissen bread that had Gregg and 19 other players inserted. I took the cards out and donated the loaves to a food shelf. At the time, a dealer told me Jefferies' cards would never go down in value, only up up up. Actually, that was the mantra for baseball cards in general.
I remember when Topps stadium Club first came out, as someone mentioned before, Kevin Maas stands out from that set as a disappointment. I remember picking out the best packsbased on knowing the runs, great days
I'm glad you mentioned the Brian Taylor card. i remember going to my card dealer to pick up my 91 factory set and he got one of the Topps Gold Sets with that Brian Taylor Autograph included he was asking for $400 for that 1991 Topps Gold Factory Set. I did not think it would ever hold that value, so even though I could have bought the set I did not. Instead I used that money to finish off my 1970 Topps Baseball set, looks like I made a good decision.
In a modern version, I remember the summer of 2011, buying a blaster box of Topps updated, and of course opening it. I pulled a diamond anniversary rookie card of Dustin Ackkey… but no Trout
Interesting. He had a great career and is still considered something of a legend on the South Side, but he played before I collected, so I don't know if his cards were ever considered 'hot.'
Great video. Just a note about Todd Van Popel, though, in case you forgot. Van Popel was the consensus #1 pick in 1990 but said he would play college ball if the Braves chose him at number 1. He, also, was demanding a major league contract which drove off many other teams. That is why he dropped to #14 to the powerhouse Oakland A's. The Braves, of course, settled for a young hard hitting high school prospect named Chipper Jones and the rest - as they say - is history.
I remember the New York Mets having a trio of pitchers who never quite panned out: "Generation K were a baseball trio of starting in the organization in 1995, consisting of Bill Pulsipher, Jason Isringhausen, and Paul Wilson." Isringhausen was the only one to really make a name for himself mostly as a reliever but Pulsipher and Wilson both had several years in the majors.

I remember all of these very well. Good video. I remember going to shows and everyone was looking for the 89 Bowman Jerome Waltons. It was going for $15...which is crazy.
You being a Yankee fan, how does Hensley "Bam Bam" Muellens or Ruben Rivera not make your list? I remember Rivera being compared to Mantle....I also remember Bob Hamelin, Phil Nevin, Marty Cordova, Todd Greene, Raul Casanova were big investments for me that went south!
i haven't paid attention to card collecting since 2000 or so, but over the past few years i have been getting the thrill from buying rack packs and the such off Ebay or amazon just to get the thrill.
Everyone is the next Nolan Ryan. I stood next to Nolan in 1986 (Spring Training). I'm taller, but he still threw harder, his gift. Now I'm a semi-retired physics player who throws hard due to new ways to throw based on physics.
Anthony Young...Met pitcher who had the most consecutive loses ever I believe. I even got his autograph. I excelled at choosing the worst prospects. And yes, I remember Todd Van Popple and Kevin Mass debacles.
Great idea for a video. I think you covered a lot of the ones I first thought of. Also thought about Ben grieve and the guy last name Christianson (#1 pick) who threw at a guy in the on deck circle, beaning him in the head. The guy was trying to get his timing down. Lol. Where's the intro?!?!
I've been having all kinds of technology issues because my iPhone went dead two weeks ago. I've been using an old phone and trying to keep it simple. With that being said, I should be getting the new iPhone today! I was thinking of Matt Bush and Tim Beckham as well but didn't think they were big enough names.
Honorable Mentions Jon Smiley, Chris Sabo, Ron Kittle, Angel Berroa, Alvin Davis, Matt Nokes. Ellis Burks. I remember the hype around Jefferies, anyone remember the articles where he practiced his swing in the pool? Didn't work out I guess.
I had just over 100 Nick Esasky cards. They started out for about 2 cents. I sold them to a local shop at the end of the season he played for the Red Sox. I made $1.25 a card. He then got a condition similar to Vertigo. Sad story.
Still have the donruss Jefferies in a screw down case. Part of my childhood and I'll never let it go.

I didn't jump on the Greg Jefferies band wagon that much, I did have a couple of his donruss and score cards.....i think i still have his donruss lol
I remember all of these very well. Good video. I remember going to shows and everyone was looking for the 89 Bowman Jerome Waltons. It was going for $15...which is crazy.
Awesome video. Todd Ziele is definitely another one I remember being a huge bust.
How about Corey Patterson? He was a huge prospect in the mid 90s. At least Wood and Prior had some solid seasons
Greg Jeffries ..holy shit..man you brought back so many memories with all these..
Van Poppel - I sure do remember him. Ben McDonald too (Baltimore).
The hype in NYC over Jeffries... 🤣 especially that Fleer card.
And it's Jerome, not Jeremy. 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome video my friend 💯
A 30 pin adapter. When was this video made? 2008?
What about Michael Jordon?
You being a Yankee fan, how does Hensley "Bam Bam" Muellens or Ruben Rivera not make your list? I remember Rivera being compared to Mantle....I also remember Bob Hamelin, Phil Nevin, Marty Cordova, Todd Greene, Raul Casanova were big investments for me that went south!
The Ben McDonald error card, omg. I remember buying upper deck packs just to get that one card!
1990 upper deck has so many errors its tought to count em all..
i haven't paid attention to card collecting since 2000 or so, but over the past few years i have been getting the thrill from buying rack packs and the such off Ebay or amazon just to get the thrill.
Todd Van Poppel, Rick Ankiel, Kevin Maas, Mark Prior, Greg Jefferies, JD Drew, Jose Cruz Jr, Corey Patterson, Brien Taylor and Jerome Walton
My hit in a "Fairfield" 100 baseball card $5 retail box was a Pryor Jersey relic! 😂
This is Great haha love it man
I remember I could NOT get my brother to let go of his 92 Fleer Ultra Juan Guzman. Protected that thing like it was the holy grail.
You should display some of your favorite vinyl records with your dad
Everyone is the next Nolan Ryan. I stood next to Nolan in 1986 (Spring Training). I'm taller, but he still threw harder, his gift. Now I'm a semi-retired physics player who throws hard due to new ways to throw based on physics.
Fun video. I really enjoyed it. Remember all of those cards from the early 90s.
Thanks!
Anthony Young...Met pitcher who had the most consecutive loses ever I believe. I even got his autograph. I excelled at choosing the worst prospects. And yes, I remember Todd Van Popple and Kevin Mass debacles.
First names I think of were Kevin Maas, Sam Horn, Brien Taylor.
Bunch of these players from the 80's were hyped up by sports illustrated. It's the Tony Mandarich effect.
I had just over 100 Nick Esasky cards. They started out for about 2 cents. I sold them to a local shop at the end of the season he played for the Red Sox. I made $1.25 a card. He then got a condition similar to Vertigo. Sad story.
The best thing about Nick Esasky is Tim Mcarver"s pronunciation of him
