- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" Overture, Op. 21, MWV P 3 (with Score)
Composed: 1826
The overture in E major, Op. 21, was written by Mendelssohn at 17 years and 6 months old (it was finished on 6 August 1826). Contemporary music scholar George Grove called it "the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music". It was written as a concert overture, not associated with any performance of the play. The overture was written after Mendelssohn had read a German translation of the play in 1826. The translation was by August Wilhelm Schlegel, with help from Ludwig Tieck. There was a family connection as well: Schlegel's brother Friedrich married Felix Mendelssohn's Aunt Dorothea.
Such a perfect peice I can’t put it into words. Mendelssohn is my favorite composer and this is my favorite piece in all of classical music.
The beginning is the most beautiful thing I ever heard
I first heard those four opening wind chords 53 years ago, the first piece of classical music I had ever listened to properly, and have never forgotten the effect they had. They were like a call from another enchanted ineffable world. Which I suppose is the mood they were intended to invoke.
First time I’ve heard this in 60 years, and it’s still as much fun as it was when I was 17… can still hear the various characters!!! Great!!!!
The sudden increase in volume almost killed me.

This is a revolutionary work in those days.
Mendelssohn's world of music, Mendelssohn itself.
He wrote this with 16! A true German Genius.
A true Jewish genius.

Sure
Can you write this with some English grammar meaning: what does "He wrote this with 16!" actually mean? Did he write it using 16 pens? Or perhaps he wrote it using 16 blank music pages. It couldn't possibly mean he wrote it AT age 16 (years) because it sounds like you know English well enough and you aren't a lazy cuss like some folks on utube not to be precise enough to write sentences with unclear, cryptic meaning...right?
@@thejils1669 he clearly meant "with 16 key signatures"
