I'm 45 and I tell younger folks I'm old enough to remember tv when it went off the air early in the morning. Now it stays on but shows info commercials. They look at me and say what da ya mean it went off the air?
Jack Marter Yes, you are correct. It looks like they switched languages line-by-line. I have to somewhat correct mharris on this one: the Windsor, Ontario area, which is immediately across the river from Detroit, is actually fairly well-known for one of Canada's highest concentrations of French speakers outside Quebec. Franco-Ontarians, as they are called, represent a substantial minority in Windsor and Essex County.
I could see channel 50 TV tower from my backyard when I was a kid. The tower glowing in the night with it's red flashing lights. It was a magical time to a kid of the 60's and a teen of the 70's.
"Great to see a WKBD sign-off. By the way, that Iwo Jima SSB film was used by WLIG-TV 55 (Now WLNY). I remember seeing the tagline at 2.51 at the end of the film." WUPW, channel 36 in Toledo had also used the same film with tagline for roughly 20 years.

That particular Star-Spangled Banner film was one of the more popular films that television stations around the Midwest played at sign off and sign on. I know here in Indianapolis WPDS now WXIN & WMCC now WNDY used that film every day at sign off and sign on.

CBC Will concluded another broadcast day followed by God save the Queen and o Canada (Since 1950's, 60's and the 70's) until 1979 and 1980 it was changed into o Canada with glowing hearts (film) from The national film board of Canada used in sign on and off for all CBC/SRC Television stations
no, this sstation only did this as a curdicey to the viewers in south western Ontario. it would have ben nice if CBET would have played the star spangled banner. if you look up WTVS sign off they played both oh canada and the star spangled banner.
As someone who called Detroit home from 1970 until mid 1986, I was wondering other than Channels 50, 7, and 4 airing Interfaith Broadcasting Group or whatever they were, did WJBK ( B.F...... before Fox 2 ) and WXON ( now WMYD My 20 ) #@?!? I almost forgot ANDDD... The old CBS 2 ( now WWJ CBS 62 ) aired those religious sign off messages? I should know, I have left Detroit, but Detroit lives on even in Southern California.... in this gal. Thanks.
i was not clear on my last coment about this video. what i was trying to say was the O canada film looked like a tuerisun film and not a TV sign off anthom.
Rudy Iraheta SHUT UP WITH THE FALSE INFORMATION JUST SHUT IT UP!!!, WKBD BECAME AFFILIATED WITH FOX WHEN THE NETWORK LAUNCHED IN OCTOBER 1986, WKBD WENT BACK TO AN INDEPENDENT ON DECEMBER 11,1994 THE SAME DAY WJBK SWITCHED AFFILIATIONS FROM CBS TO FOX AND WGPR FROM BLACK OWNED AND OPERATED INDEPENDENT TO HAVING THE CBS AFFILIATION. WKBD HAD THE UPN AFFILIATION FOR 11 YEARS UNTIL 2006 WHEN THEY TOOK THE CW AFFILIATION JESUS CHRIST😡😡😡😡
I can't speak for that era. But I've watched a lot of signoffs here for several years (at bedtime, of course) - and I can't recall any Canadian station using this bilingual version.
I said this before on another video and I will say it again. I believe that the stations that are licensed on the US side of the border and play both anthems, usually will play the glowing hearts film or a homebrewed version that they made.
I looked up those phone numbers but without an area code to narrow it down I couldn't get any meaningful results. I assume this is in a Mexican community somewhere in the southwest and not in Mexico. I don't know what Mexican phone numbers look like.
You're totally right...I remember watching this as a kid, up later than I should have been, and being wigged out by it. Not sure if it's the lack of production value or what, but it's just...oogie. :-/
All these sign offs are freaky. Especially the spooky PSA's they often have. Or when they finish the sign off and go to the high pitch noise and color bars.
I've always though the same thing. There is just something about station sign offs late at night that seems creepy. That and the Emergency Alert System tests
Right lol, I remember seeing this as a kid and knew the silence was coming. Than it was Time to wake mom up 50 times for some water. till finally dad woke up madder than hell and kids flew to bed. Hmmm monster under the bed waiting in the silent dark or a crack across the ass. Decisions, decisions

The same when i tell people that HBO was only 1 channel, and not 24 hrs!
Damn this brings back so many childhood memories
KREM 2 in Spokane, WA used the "O Canada" film when they signed on in the mid 1980's.
Do you by chance have a copy of the sign-on from KREM 2 that Did both anthems that you can upload to UA-cam?
@@dantheelevatorman1 I wish.
I bet you somebody somewhere has it.
How rare, a station sign-off that features both the U.S. & Canadian National Anthems.
They never played the royal anthem, I noticed.
+TimelordR Did they sing part of O Canada in French and part in English?

@@chrishenniker5944 The Royal Anthem is usually only played when a Royal Family member is there.

Man, what memories this brings back! It was always a little creepy to watch this late at night ...not sure why.
Wow! I thought that I was the only one.
Extremely beautiful and heartwarming signoff video! Thank you for sharing such a memorable video!!😊
WHTM TV in Harrisburg Pennsylvania also used this same SSB film for many years in the 70s and 80s

I was wondering as a kid is Mexico THAT close to Detroit,,if so i missed the memo..Glad to see it though
So this would have only been a year or so before WKBD became a charter affiliate of the Fox network.
probably more than a year or so; I remember this in the very early 80s

WKBD is the anthem king of Detroit TV of both nations
Anyone have the music in the background of the sign-off?
The o Canada film looked like an ad for Canada tuerisim then an a national anthom sign off.

Is the O Canada film used in this sign-off used when Canadian TV stations signed off in the early/mid 70's?

I remember being able to pick up WKBD with our rooftop antenna from Grand Rapids.
Any idea what arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" that is?
There was a time when you could pick up WKBD on cable in GR as well.
Wonder how that Hispanic community in the PSA is doing decades later.
remember the chicana service action center commercial from los angeles

Kaiser broadcasting station back in the day. call letters mean Were Kaiser Broadcasting Detroit. National Anthem shows the Marine Corps Memorial.
1:00 ~ What a beautiful version of "Jesu, Joy Of Man Desiring". ^^
"Jesu, Joy Of Man Desiring" by Johann Sebastian Bach.
1:30 De fondo, el himno patrio de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica
(The Star Spangled Banner)
This song used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid. Don't know why though! 🙂
1:00
Also, the song used in the PSA at the beginning is probably not, but sounds similar to Bourrée in E minor by Bach.
I noticed that the Royal Anthem isn't played.
I think that is only played when one of the Royal Family is physically in Canada.
Mile 42 WIAT Birmingham Opening September 15, 2009
That's Dave Lockhart doing the signoff...the video is from the Miami Valley/Cox era.
I never knew stations in Detroit sang "Oh Canada" to end the day. Did CBET ever play the Star Spangled Banner?
Stations located close to the Canadian border played O Canada. I do not know if any Canadian stations played the SSB, though.
@@gidzmobug2323 there was one station in Peterborough ON that played the star spangled banner. The station was CHEX-TV 12.
