CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Will (Orson Welles) threatens to lock Ben (Paul Newman) up if any fires break out, and Ben asks for a decent job.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
While often regarded as one of America's greatest novelists, William Faulkner produced work that did not always translate well to the screen; it's ironically appropriate that this movie, based on several of Faulkner's short stories, is often regarded as one of the best films based on his work, though not especially accurate to the original source material. Ben Quick (Paul Newman), a sullen but self-confident drifter, arrives in a small Mississippi town where his father had a bad reputation as a firebug. Will Varner (Orson Welles), the town's patriarch, still holds a grudge against Quick's dad, and when the young man decides to stay in town and sharecrop on Varner's land, Will goes out of his way to make his life difficult. However, Will develops a grudging respect for Quick's guts and determination, and he wishes that his weak-willed son Jody (Anthony Franciosa) could be more like him; Jody's wife Eula (Lee Remick) happens to agree. In time, Will gets the idea that Quick might be a good match for his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) and a better choice to take over his business dealings than Jody. However, neither Clara nor Quick care to be told what to do, and besides, Clara already has a beau -- though Alan Stewart (Richard Anderson) is even more of a milquetoast than Jody and is led by the nose by his mother (Mabel Albertson). However, sparks begin to fly between Clara and Quick, and when Jody fears he may lose his place as heir of Will's estate, he takes drastic action, trapping his father in a barn, setting it on fire, and planting evidence that would suggest that the blaze was Quick's doing. The Long, Hot Summer was the first film that Newman and Woodward made together, and they got married the same year.

There will never be another 'screen idol' like Paul Newman. He's just the epitome of male beauty, one of a kind, an absolute legend.
Brad Pitt
@@Bri-nc8yp He doesn't come close to the virility and masculinity of Newman.
Brad was pretty in his youth though definitely
Theodore James from divergent
@Bri-nc8yp No. Pitt's not even close, I agree w/ other commenter. Besides, his acting is a bore, I can't even stomach Any of his films, tho that might say more about available scripts than his acting - maybe.
@@Bri-nc8yp Pit? No way.
The first time my teenage daughter saw this scene, she, well, went boy crazy over Paul Newman.
😁
Same with me, when I was a teen. Paul Newman is timeless.
How old is she?
@@teresataylor2916 try with james dean
@@yogeshpandey7239 she’s 35 now.
I'm 19 and Paul Newman is smokin' 🔥
Now you're 21!!!
"Like you said you're an old man." "I am that. And you bear that in mind. And be respectful." I LOVE that line of Orson Welles and use it myself sometimes.
Paul Newman was a master of natural, DELICIOUS repartee with the right sparring partner. He is SO fun in this with an 'over the top Orson' and his future wife Joanne. But nothing beats the banter of Patricia Neal and Newman in HUD.
Newman's best banter is definitely with Redford in Butch and Sundance as well as the Sting, in my opinion.
@@ianbauer4703 I know, the best bromance ever made! And they became great, lifelong, friends while making Butch Cassidy. Talk about a dream team! Both to look at and in life.. ❤❤
I like him swinging from a chandelier and giggling in Rally Round the Flag. reminds me so much of Sean Penn. Started playing the same character in every movie. Still a good actor though
He just knows his craft. What works, what won't. "From the Terrace", his attraction to the daughter, he realizes he settled for a loveless marriage. At least he ended up with her, money and lust, putting up with a spouse who uses you, puts you down or compares you to another. His wife really lost a good man. Sadly she wanted to be desired and wanted. On her terms. And wealthy. So glad he got away from her.
Patricia Neal in Hud was on to him from day one. And he knew it. She called him on his crap, messing around with married women. Her eating in his car, claiming "Someone smells like Chanel #5, isn't me, can't afford it."
"Where do they find the time?"
"They drop everything."
"I suppose it beats housework."
Her 'work attire, so unglamorous but boy she looked great.
@@lisadc4681 My friend liked Robert Redford and I liked Paul Newnan. It's a tough choice, though!
Orson Welles and other stars in the movie knew both Paul Newman and JoAnne Woodward were in love. He said, it was a nice thing to see reflected in the movie. Paul's life time partner, best friend, wife, mother of his children.
My favorite movie, completely undervalued.
I agree with you!!!
I never regretted buying this, one of my absolute favorites!
This is my all time favorite movie. I think Paul and JoAnne were magic!
Wow his eyes..
This is the kind of scene that makes want to watch a movie.
Paul Newman had the most blue eyes on the man i seen
I don't normally crush on movie stars, but...Paul Newman. Need I say more?
I've always liked this movie. Amazing how Ben & Will team up rather quickly and of course Ben gets the girl in the end.
Orson Welles was just 42 when they filmed this in latter 1957 but he does come off convincing as a 61 year old.
Much of the film was done on location in Mississippi rather than on a studio back lot so there's a degree of realism here.
No way man ! Orson welles was 30 back during citizen kane
Citizen Kane, 1941. Okay: 16 years later: so Orson would have been 46. Still looks a lot older than that! Thanks for that info, though! Haven't thought about that fundamental classic in a long time.
@@cockeyedoptimista Every source I've read says Orson was born in 1915 but then you never know. New things are uncovered all the time.
@saimsadit5046 Orson was 26 the week that Citizen Kane premiered. This was only 17 years later.
The best Paul Newman 😍
The original Blue Eyed Bandit.
I have this classic movie and can’t stop watching it. I love this movie and it is a great movie
I’ve always liked Paul Newman. I’d say, probably my 1-5 favorite actors. Problem is, I’m 44 by the time I discovered him, he was a very old actor. Love these old classic movies. Something about them when I watch them, I was born in the wrong era…Paul seemed like he was in real life like he was in “cool hand Luke” always cool…
In the late sixties, I was an au pair from Denmark in Westport Ct. Paul Newman and Joanne lived there. He had an reputation for being very nice and and low key, when he was out on the town, he had his favorite restaurant etc.
What a strapping young man ❤️❤️
Not many guys in modern Hollywood have this charisma -- just oozing that masculine, confident and irresistible stance. A natural. Surprised Clara's knees didn't fail her as she raced out of the store away from Ben's dangerous charms.
Orson Welles found a kindred spirit in Newman. Both loathed and escaped the drudgery of Hollywood living.
Orson here reminds me of Burl Ives in Cat on a hot tin roof. Wonder if that was somewhat deliberate
Will and Big Daddy were more or less the same character.
@@ChrisJones-ij3xp Yeah. I just finished watching it, Welles is a terrific actor in other movies i've seen of his. Has one of the best screen presence ever even in this movie just him being in the frame would dominate over others but i feel he wasn't at his best acting wise in this one, Burl Ives breathed the role of Big Daddy
Did I mention Orson Wells is sitting in two different Jeeps during this scene. No big deal.
So gorgeous!
He’s hot your honor
Gosh he was pretty to look at!
Mix of Slovakian, Polish, Hungarian and Jewish roots... that's a recipe for Paul Newman's hotness and charm
Before me Michael Ealy, Willy Monfret, Jesse Williams and Jeremy Meeks. There was Paul Newman the Original Blue Eyed Bandit.
his Mother was a Christian Scientist, so I'm sure he went to church with her as a kid, his Dad was Jewish
The eyes 💙💙💙
Love Newman's hat!
Orson Welles is only 42 years old in this scene!
Looks much older
@@ianbauer4703 That's my point.
Indeed ... The character is supposed to be 61 in the movie !
@Commander Keen - Accurate.
No way!! 😳😳😳
one of my top ten movie favorites
I love this movie. Everything about it
One of the best movies made.
Bellissimo..stupendo,.Ti amo da sempre.
Phenomenal movie!!
Excellent movie i watched this movie 30 times . 2/23/2021
Those eyes
WheeeeWeeeeee Paul sure was HOT and I was always envious of his wife. Oh yes, I prefer the old movies over the new movies. Back then, actors REALLY had to ACT.
The scenes - take a bus take a train dye your change your name and maybe you can get away from me !!! LOVE IT!
Dye your HAIR
This came in '58 but it's HD wtf
70mm film translates to high-def digital quite well. The problem is finding an original film that has not degraded (or combining multiple originals and using the best parts when all have areas of degradation) and transferring the film and audio to a digital format.
Guapísimo,🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Me gustaría que la película se pueda ver el capitulo completo y por favor en idioma español es tan hermosa esta película que vale la pena ver
My go to movie.
I just found out that Will was played by Orson Welles who also directed the movie Citizen Kane and also played Charles Foster Kane
Good Bless Morning Everyone Happy Bless TGIF Love This Movie 🎥
he was a truely beautiful man ànd a fine actor x
they don't make em like him anymore.
Welles's character is not unlike the police chief Hank Quinlan, whom he played the same year in 'Touch of Evil'.
Quite shocking how quickly he let himself go after 'Othello', so he got typed as a big fat bully chomping on a stogie.
Mi película favorita ,donde la puedo encontrar ?
Il più bello di tutti
I always thought the actor Josh Lucas looked like Paul Newman!!!
He played a young version of Newman in 'Empire Falls'.
blasphemy!
The original Blue Eyed Bandit. Take that Michael Ealy, Willy Monfret, Jesse Williams, Jeremy Meeks and Ronnie Cash.
The original Blue Eyed Bandit. Take that Michael Ealy, Willy Monfret, Jesse Williams and Jeremy Meeks.
Those aren’t even of the same caliber of talent as Paul Newman. Jeremy Meeks is a no good convict who made money off a rich chick. None of them are worthy to clean Paul Newman’s boots
@@kermitsippintea7433 Well Michael Ealy is very talented. People magazine said he had the most beautiful blue eyes since Paul Newman . Willy Monfret is the number one male model In The World. Jesse Williams is also very talented and intelligent. Yes the sexiest criminal in the world has very beautiful blue eyes like me. Now that he makes three hundred thousand dollars a month modeling. I'm sure his criminal days are way behind him😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Orson Welles 🎭 beautiful 😍
Oooo those blue eyes tho 🥴🥴🥴
Hot tuna
Q tio mas guapo
Dizem que essa casa do filme é mal assombrada

The cast of ,Long hot summer
Not-so-fun fact: Elvis was a big fan of Paul Newman. One night he took three girl fans to a Memphis movie house to see this pic. After returning to Graceland in the small hours he took a call from the hospital where his mother lay sick. She had died unexpectedly.
In a sense Elvis died that night as well. He was never the wild 'hillbilly cat' of 1955-58 again.😢
Elvis was in the Germany at the time.
Hogy találom meg a filmet magyar?
Bones don't lie.
Be respectful ...
Is this dubbed???
To bad they don't make movies like this anymore ! todays movies is mostly about violence just stupid and
not worth seeing at all, I miss movies like this ABSOLUTELY !
Love classic Hollywood but black white is always better than colour . Uncles it’s Ben hur
I heard Newman had trouble meeting women
A short scene of two men having talk. No special effects, no fake anabolic muscles, no bullshit and yet these two are more masculine and the scene is more captivating than 99,99% of what Hollywood does these days and the message of the movie was pretty nice too.
Mernincsmagyarhang
Bad people t\all of a sudden turn good at the end total cheese
Nemmagyaszinron
good acting, but a contrived, unbelievable ending, not true to the characters.
The ending was too quick for her to change that much toward him.
The story here IS the star not these actors. It's a great story by a great writer, well directed. The rest is mostly window dressing. Mostly putting capable actors in the right parts. People seem to miss that Newman playing the stud was easy. All straight ahead cocksure whereas the part of Jody (Franciosa) was much harder and very well played. If you really WANT a comparison watch "The Hustler." Where it is obvious that George C. Scott or Jackie Gleason are in a class far above Newman even though Newman is supposedly the star. They HAVE to keep the camera on Newman or Scott and Gleason would blow him out of the water. Much of Newman's career was manufactured. Great stories, great directors, and great actors surrounding him. But when he's on his own - not so much. Orson Welles overplayed his part here as far as I'm concerned, not unlike Orson. Being a good "guarterback" often depends on having a great line. Just don't get confused about Newman. He ain't no Marlon Brando. In fact, without Brando there probably wouldn't have been a Newman since they play him, often, in Brando type roles. Too bad he doesn't have that Brando sensitivity or animal magnetism. Newman got better as time went by, but he is often carried by great stories. He tried later to shed himself of the Brando image by playing softer roles. Didn't work that well though, he just didn't have that capacity to play vulnerable or sensitive. Luckily for him, James Dean was dead and Montgomery Clift was too I believe otherwise he would have had more to contend with image wise.
You tell it, Mr. Raymond. You tell it..
Lay off my man
As you can tell by my profile picture, Newman is my all-time favorite actor (along with Steve McQueen) and as much as it pains me to say, you have somewhat of a point about early Newman. He definitely became a much better technical actor as he got older.
Chris pratt looks like a young paul newman
😂😂
Not even 5% as handsome.
it has a cheesy Hollywood ending.
