Apparently, the skull on the Leichenschrei cover is actually that of a woman whose face was eaten by her cat after she had passed away. Don't remember where I read that, though.
Now that's metal.
That's good to hear, burning would be the worst way to die.
I always knew cats were evil!
They say "don't judge a book by its cover", but, if I must confess, I've discovered so much music just because the artwork captivated me: I saw a cover, and istantly I just wanted an entire world that sounded like that cover. Here's a few examples.
Black metal for sure. I just love the imagery of nordic forests and mountains, and the urge to feel immersed in those landscapes was one of the main reasons I got into the genre. "Hvis lyset tar oss" and "Filosofem" by Burzum have two splendid Theodor Kittlesen artworks; "Panzerfaust" by Darkthrone is simply "so pure, so cold"; Paysage d'Hiver's s/t is spellbinding in its simplicity (my aunt said that it reminded her of Francisco Goya's "The dog", and that just enhances the enjoyment); "Dead as dreams" by Weakling, again with Goya; the Grateful Dead skull in "Murmuüre". And I know maybe this isn't the right corner of the internet to say this, but can I just appreciate the "Sunbather" pink cover?
I really enjoy the aesthetics and the artworks for Gnaw Their Tongues' works. "All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity" is the most iconic of course, but I really enjoy also the "Rend Each Other Like Wild Beasts, Till Earth Shall Reek With Midnight Massacre" artwork: satanic in a more sollemn and "catholic" way, if that makes sense.
I'm a fucking weeb, so when I see a good manga-esque artwork, I'm ready to go: "Draining Love Story" by Sewerslvt and "Phant Solo II" by Taishi are my prime examples.
"Éons" by Neptunian Maximalism. I bought it without having even listened to it just because the artwork was that good. Luckily, the music didn't lack in quality :)
"The Inalienable Dreamless" by Discordance Axis. I love this album also because it has a big and serene sky as a cover. Grindcore with a poetic edge is the ultimate vibe: may I call it haiku-metal?
"Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. A classic in every sense: the dripping sweat, the stregonesque figure, Africa aka the Motherland...
"The Seer" by Swans. My first Swans album, discovered thanks to that Amoeba video with Anthony Fantano. I asked myself: what the dog doin' on that black ominous background? And why this music sounds so massive?
Love that morbid saint vinyl in the background.
Some of my fav album artwork is
CC: tomb of the mutilated
Demolition hammer: tortured existence
Repulsion: horrified
Sodom: obsessed by cruelty
Destruction: release from agony
Burzum: self titled
Here's my top 15, in no order whatsoever
1. Bathory - Blood, Fire, Death
2. Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
3. Ungfell - Es grauet
4. Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
5. Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia
6. Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
7. Skinless- Trample de Weak, Hurdle the Dead
8. Candlemass - Nightfall
9. November's Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
10. Bathory - Hammerheart
11. Spectral Wound - Infernal Decadence
12. Melechesh - Sphynx

15. Asphyx - Deathhammer
Honorable Mentions:
Nile - Those Whom The Gods Detest
Kawir - Isotheos
Sigh - Infidel Art
Ancient - Svartalvheim
Wolves In The Throne Room - Primordial Arcana
Cool little bit of trivia, the "In the Nightside Eclipse" art depicts Tolkien Orcs returning to Minus Morgul.
The orcs have good taste in black metal
Yesssssssss
If there is one album artwork, I really love it's Alpenpässe by Minenwerfer. It is just breathtaking.
Here are some of my favorites.
Point Blank - Nailbomb
Rio Grande Blood - Ministry
s/t - The Berzerker
The Anthropocene Extinction - Cattle Decapitation
Blasphemy Made Flesh - Cryptopsy
Nordland I - Bathory
Krovoizliyaniye - Aspid
When The Kite String Pops - Acid Bath
Symbols - KMFDM
Homogenic - Björk
The Money Store - Death Grips
My personal favorite is Garden of Shadows’ “Oracle Moon”, it fits the Atmosphere perfectly,
Nice choices!!!
Some of my favorite album artworks in no particular order are:
- Bell Witch's "Mirror Reaper" (really anything by Lewandowski, but I love that piece especially, RIP)
- any Weregoat album, I love them all lol
- Our Place of Worship is Silence's "With Inexorable Suffering" (good 'ol Wrest/ Jeff Whitehead Art)
- Of Feather and Bone's "Bestial Hymns of Perversion" and "Sulfuric Disentigration"
- Severed Savior's "Servile Insurrection"
- Abhorrency's "Climax of Disgusting Impurities"
- Tetragrammicide's "Primal Incinerators of the Moral Matrix"
- Ancient Moon's "Vvltvre"
- Tardigrada's "Emotionale Odnis" (obligatory Black Metal Castle Supremacy cover lolol)
- Ensiferum's "Iron"
- Amon Amarth's "Versus the World" (my favorite album of theirs)
- Revelation None's "Rituals of the Flesh" (if you look it up it's pretty obvious lmao, 9000% pure degeneracy lol)
... The list goes on, but those are some of the many that I dig the hell out of.
Defacement's self titled record has really stuck with me, I've seen thousands of gory album covers but that one is particularly evocative.
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
Beautiful album cover, beautiful songs
entire black midi discography artworks
I actually have a shirt of that pseudogod album with that very design. one of my favorites in my collection
Some of my favorite album covers, some of them are very simple.
Basically every Martin Grech album cover, especially Hush Mortal Core.
The Butterfly Effect - Final Conversation of Kings
Kill the Thrill - Tellurique
Author & Punisher - Beastland
Johnnascus - Identity Crisis
Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Dir En Grey - Dum Spiro Spero
Circa Survive - On Letting Go
Children of Nova - The Complexity of Light
Leprous - The Congregation
Sweet pick with Brodequin dude. I'd say in a similar telling a lot with simplicity sense and in brutal death metal, Coprobaptized Cunthunter's 2010 LP has another absolutely incredible album art. That very rough watercolor style with medical imagery always sticks out to me when I think of album arts
Love it!!! Copro was great
Terrifyer by Pig Destroyer is my favorite album cover ever, and I'm very much inspired by it in my own works.
Great cover! I know that this could sound strange, but I find this artwork really elegant, in a weird way.
Yes! I really love the girl on the back of the album.
respect for morbid saint in the back!
one of my favorites is functioning on impatience by coalesce, its very militant and covert looking
As a man of culture, my fav is probably "Urine of Abomination" by Triumvir Foul.
Joking aside, i've always loved Mastodon album covers, "Crack the skye" probably being my favorite from them. Also Kvelertak had some amazing artwork on their albums!
I love album covers, I even have a separate folder where I collect them, and whenever I'm thinking about what is my favorite album cover, I always end up with Sin Egen Motståndare by Totalitär. The design, the message (as far as I know it means you are your own enemy in Swedish), it just ticks with me on a level no other artwork does (regardless that I have a thousand other favorites). And the music is awesome as well!
Savage grace is a great pick
Personal favorites probably Welcome to Hell, Deathcrush, Killing is my business and Fabulous Disaster but also off metal Tarkus by ELP and Casiopea self-titled
That SPK album is fucking harrowing man, makes early Skinny Puppy seem like ABBA by comparison !
Starting the video out with Morbid Saint, badass!
The video titled “CKY2 Iceland” here on youtube is one I come back to here and there when I’m feeling down because of two simple things. The warm nostalgia of laughter growing up on those movies, and the other thing is just how epic Iceland is in general and how they show it off with that song Halcyon by Orbital playing in the background. It’s always made me want to visit Iceland, hopefully someday. Love the vids man, keep it up :)
Fuck yeah Morbid Saint. Some of my favorite album covers from the top of my head are The Low End Theory, Songs About Fucking, The Money Store, Blonde on Blonde, F#A# infinity (not the vinyl version), Since I Left You, anything from Lightning Bolt's catalogue, The Gauntlet's Dark Steel and Fire, Blasphemy's BUTA and FAOD, Apex Profane, Disharmonium - Undreamable Abysses, Gore Metal, and World Downfall. I also want to add that you grow out of the whole "Jesus suffering" artwork in metal when you discover graphic goregrind album covers.
My top 5 would be:
Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth
GBK - Mocking the Philanthropist
Flooded Church of Asmodeus - No Parole from Satanic Underground (I’d rock the hell out of a yellow shirt with this on it)
Nunslaughter - Eastern Illusion
Last Days of Humanity - Hymns of Indigestible Suppuration, the only shirt in my collection I can count on one hand how many times I’ve worn because there’s really no appropriate time to except something like MDF
good vid! love love love that rudimentary peni album, the artwork matches perfectly w the music.
i think my favs rn are fijian fantasies - phyllomedusa, thou shalt not kill - antidote, burning desire to draw last breath - gulch
My favorite album covers in music is autopsy's mental funeral , because it 's perfectly show how album sounds, as stuck together decaying and screaming creatures . Most of that mood caused due to oddball time signatures ,unpredictable speed ups ,breaks and slow downs
All great picks, I love paintings. I am very passionate about certain artists. But for some reason, when it comes to black metal (not death metal) I love me some nature and especially some animals. Throes Of Dawn - Pakkasherra and Saturnus - paradise belongs to you. Comes to mind. Two banger albums
love hearing your favorites, some of mine
danny brown- atrocity exhibition
gnaw their tounges- all the dread magnificence
death grips- the money store
full of hell- weeping choir
indian- from all purity
paysage d’hiver- schattengang
prurient- frozen niagra falls
tim hecker- mirages
the money store is such a classic
Always love your videos my friend! I’m jealous of your void berserk tshirt..:nicely done
Hypocrisy Osculum Obscenum and Qrixkuor Poison Palinopsia are my favorite album art of all time.
Love the morbid saint in the background, so cool to know that you fuck with them 🤘🔥
I really like minimal album covers like Honor killed the samurai by Ka, The careless flame by Kill the Vultures, Uneven Compromise by Lil Ugly Mane and October Rust by Type O Negative.
excellent choices
DsO, Gorguts (especially on Colored Sands and Pleiades' Dust), Imperial Triumphant, Ulcerate and Ad Nauseam have sick artworks that compliment the themes of their albums and are just captivating to look at with their imagery.
Love Leichenschrei to death, heaviest thing to come out in the early 80s, Heavier than Motorhead, Than Venom, heavier than anything, even some the band members story in kinda dark
Mekong Delta debut has an extremely cool artwork. it's dark and epic at the same time.
extreme noise terror- a holocaust in your head- I love the atmosphere of that image.
Coven debut-idk why but i love it
As a stupid metal teen with stupid dumb opinions and descriptions, here are some of my favorite album covers
All - Allroy Saves
This one just has some definitively 90's style
Burzum - Filosofem
It's just nice art y'know
Obituary - Cause of Death
Very neat and the actual corpse in the album cover is unique unlike most other DM bands. Oh and that eye is just so fuckin ominous it's amazing
Allman Brothers Band - Where it all Begins
It encapsulates the warmth and comfort of both the album and the band itself. The cover is beautiful
Dangerous Toys - S/T
One of the BEST hair albums. Like no joke it's amazing. And the cover is just fun, has some shite carnival painting vibe that's just good fun.
The Meatmen - We're The Meatmen and You Suck!
There couldn't be a more fitting cover for a band of the Meatmen's caliber. The art is clearly a younger man just doodling somethin
Cheap Sweat - S/T
Some stupid art stuff that's visually appealing and weird
M.O.D. - USA FOR MOD
Grimy and tough like the band's tone
Warning - Watching From A Distance
A slow walk up a mountain in like a depressing ass environment is exactly what the album feels like
'Hiiekoda' by Metsatöll is probably my number one favourite album artwork. Jüri Arrak, who created most of the artwork for the band, had a really destinct art style that I just really love. Also the artworks by Duncan Storr are some of my favourite, being behind Elvenking's 'Wyrd' and most of the Skyclad album artworks.
Always a good day to see a new video from you, dude.
anything HR Giger is 10/10
Cool video dude. Sunn o - black one, it kinda brings some giger vibes. Benediction - transcend to rubicon. Portal - vexovoid. Carnosus - visions of infinihilty. Jedi mind - violent by design
two of my favorites that come to mind rn are "Against the Seasons: Cold Winter Songs from the Dead Summer Heat" by Woods of Ypres and "Head First into Shadows" by (EchO). Just gives off an eerie vibe that fits w the music. Ulver's "Shadows of the Sun" is another one that struck my eye that pays off with its simplicity
Tulus “Pure Black Energy” A lot of people don’t like it but I think the cover is outfuckingstanding.
Always interesting to hear your opinions on stuff like this
I find it hard to pick a favorite album cover, but here’s some that come to mind for me:
- Metallica - Master Of Puppets
- Death - Leprosy
- Styx - Paradise Theater
- Yes - Relayer
- Internal Bleeding - Voracious Contempt
- Kansas - Leftoverture
- Razor - Violent Restitution
- Cradle Of Filth - Hammer of The Witches
- Immortal - At The Heart of Winter
- Bright Eyes - Down In The Weeds, Where the World Once Was
- Slayer - Reign In Blood
- Sleep - Holy Mountain
- Behemoth - Thelema.6
- Volbeat - Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood
- Mayhem - Daemon
Love your shirt, from manga Berserk.
Anaal Nathrakh - "When Fire Rains Down from the Sky..."
Hypocrisy - " Osculum Obscenum"
Today is the Day - "In the Eyes of God"
Nasum - "Inhale/Exhale"
Brutal Truth - "Sounds of the Animal Kingdom"
Iron Maiden - "Piece of Mind"
The list would easily go on into the hundreds I reckon and I've probably genuinely forgotten heaps.
The cleansing, hate, the boy who died wolf
I like the more detailed artworks, like when there's a scenario, small or big, and there's characters doing something, I mean, a scene lol Here's some of mine (which happen to be some of my favorite albums, too):
• Casiopea's 1979 self titled debut. It showcases these two racing cars, and that's the feeling of this first records of them: fun, uplifting and fast paced jazz fusion.
• Clube da Esquina's self titled debut. My favorite MPB album, with a simple but well chosen picture on its front.
• Bauhaus' In The Flat Field.
• The Cure's Pornography; creepy.
• Blind Guardian's Tales From The Twilight World (specially), Somewhere Far Beyond and Nightfall In Middle-Earth gives me the exactly feel of a fantasy quest through a world full of menacing creatures, dungeons, creepy forests... There's also the 2003 Live album, which depicts a tavern and is so fucking immersive. While BG makes a heavier power metal style, they embrace this atmosphere of a fantastic medieval setting, and I love it.
• Dream Theater's Images and Words has the right dreamlike sensation that the band kinda had in that time. There's also Train of Thoughts, which would give me a fantasy feeling just as Yu-Gi-Oh illustrations, but it end up being a least favorite album from them; it has a lot of wasted time, IMO, in songs that could be perfect (like Honor Thy Father, that dialogue middle section just throw me off the song), but also has Stream of Consciousness, the best instrumetal Dream Theater has done to date.
• Elegy's Labyrinth of Dreams, for the same reason of Images and Words (as they're both early 90's prog metal albums).
• Opeth's Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse: one of the imagery I look for black metal. I'm not a big fan of those black and white corpse paint Darkthrone-ish cover arts, but this folk concept attracts me the most. Morningrise has and extre point of strong melancholy.
• Annihilator's Alice In Hell, for its 80's horror movies style.
• Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath.
• Rhapsody of Fire's Legendary Tales, Dawn of Victory and many others, for the same reason of Blind Guardian. It has a more classical picturing, as well for the music itself.
• Iron Maiden's Somewhere In Time.
• Pink Floyd's Animals.
• Megadeth's Peace Sells, But Who's Buying.
• Angra's Temple of Shadows
• Nocturnus' The Key and Thresholds.
• Kreator's Endless Pain. Even though I'm not a big fan of thr album itself, the artwork has that violence presented in a cool scenario.
• Dissection's Storm of Light's Bane, just like In The Nightside Eclipse, has this cold, enchanting vibe.
There's a lot more, and also Eliran Kantor's paintings, which I consider some of the best nowadays, but there isn't one in particular that I consider my favorite.
One of my all time fave artists is Joe Coleman. I don't know if he's done any album covers , but his work is cool AF.
Love flying lotus. The whole LA beat scene and those early brainfeeder years is worth checking out. And thundercat of course.
Where did you get that berserk shirt it’s so cool
Apparently Cirith Ungol recently said they have the best album art. They are a contender for sure.
Nice, SPK!
I like Sólstafir album cover, mainly ‘cause it plays with the name of the band, in the picture. Sólstafir meaning “sun spell” and the pic being in black and white and also being on a beach, where obviously there is no sun. Sólstafir also means “sunny place”
Interesting picks btw
kreators pleasure to kill is one of my top favorites

Entombed- Left Hand Path
Mastodon- Leviathan
Dio- Holy Diver
Electric Wizard- Dopethrone
Acid Bath- When The Kite String Pops
Tiamat- Wildhoney
Cattle Decapitation- Monolith Of Inhumanity
If Arthur Suydam painted an album cover for a band I listened to, that would be my favorite cover.
Death or Glory is so eye catching. Aside from the super jacked dude and the polar bear, the look of the sky is absolutely impeccable as well. Again, love the Morbid Saint in the background.

@@ManuSDP Glad to hear someone else say that
Really enjoyed this video, but wow my taste in cover art is VERY different haha
Awsome
Oh man, I could talk about album art for days. Every year I find myself agreeing with the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" less and less. Any artist worth their salt should care enough to have the cover represent the material inside, especially in the age of streaming when a listener is bombarded from all sides with artists competing for their attention. If you have good visual presentation it can go a long way to get noticed.
The perfect example I have is Morgreim for their two albums: Forgotten Tales and XXII because if it weren't for the artwork, I'd sure as shit never have never given them(him? I don't know whether or not it's a solo project) a shot and now they're one of my go to bands when I'm in the mood for atmospheric black metal.
Children of Bodom - Halo of Blood. The reaper in white standing on a frozen lake during a snow storm, the snow on the ice parting at places allowing you to see people trapped in the lake below. That imagery always stuck with me.
Samael - Passage. Literally just a picture of the moon positioned so it's craters vaguely resemble a skull. Simple but eerily effective.
God is an Astronaut - Ghost Tapes #10 and Remina - Obsidian(single). I'll do these two together because they're quite similar with both depicting a vessel (the former a plane, the latter a ship) seemingly in the moment it explodes into splinters.
Riverside - Shrine of The New Generation Slaves. If there's ever any cover that depicts the crushing feeling of dystopian architecture under bleak skies, it's this one. This might just be a personal preference but I always found this type of architecture mysteriously attractive. I honestly have no idea how to explain why.
Made of Hate - Pathogen. Soviet bloc healthcare in a nutshell.
Tyran Pace - Eye to Eye. Don't even know where to begin, it's just plain creepy. Especially for an album from 1984.
Utsu-P - UNIQUE. The more I look at it, the more I like it, a creative spin on the "Gilded Cage" expression.
Opeth - Still Life
Okay off the cuff:
Putridity - Ignominous Atonement (it’s my band but the cover is so perfect for the concept nothing could be better)
Catasexual Urge Motivation - Encyclopedia of Serial Murders (the OG cover)
Devourment - Molesting the Decapitated
Total Rusak - Exploding the Cranial (terrible pixeled out photo but it fits the mood oh so well)
Impaled - Mondo Medicale
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Outkast - Aquemini
Decaying Purity - Malignant Resurrection of th Fallen Souls (Paolo Girardi is one of the best painters in the game)
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare (Ed Repka in general is the best thrash cover artist)
A few of the top of my head:
Portal - Outre
DsO - Fas...
Schammasch - Metanoia
Burzum - Hviss lyset tar oss
Miles Davis - Bitches brew
Silencer - Death - pierce me
nice picks, here are my favorites:
midori - hello everyone, nice to meet you, we're midori
converge - jane doe
deafheaven - sunbather
deftones - koi no yokan and saturday night wrist
dir en grey - gauze and uroboros
earl sweatshirt - some rap songs
frank ocean - blonde
joji - ballads 1
kendrick lamar - to pimp a butterfly
loathe - i let it in and it took everything
mass of the fermenting dregs - world is yours
sewerslvt - we had good times together, don't forget that
thornhill - heroine
wormrot - voices
parannoul - to see the next part of the dream
😉
Awesome list
Ah Midori nice, if were in that scene I'd put Number girl's last 2 records up there too. Good list
@@2doobsmcjubes555 a midori and number girl fan, nice
sometime I wonder if I listen to cover or music
Ayyo whered you get that Void shirt??
Side question, do you like the bands White Ward, Nebula Mori, or Inherits the Void?
Yo can we get a noise or power electronics music iceberg
May be a normie pick, but I love the art for "Kid A" by Radiohead. The empty, metallic field in front of these white volcanoes just perfectly encapsulates the cold, alien feeling of much of the album.
"Octahedron" by Mars Volta, "Leviathan" by Mastodon, "Polygondwanaland" by KGatLW, and "Screaming For Vengance" by Judas Priest are also some of my favorite covers.
Glad to see a Radiohead fan here .
I agree kid a is such an amazing artwork
I hate Radiohead but i love that cover
Always loved Nick Blinkos artwork... Another person worth mentioning is Raymond Pettibon
Sick shirt man! No wonder you enjoy Berserk. Did you read the manga or watched the anime?
Greetings from Germany
Absu self-title album Absu. Also their latest album (Proscriptor McGovern's Apsu self-title album). Are you a fan of Absu?
Cryptopsy- none so vile
Where's no love deep web by Death Grips?
The pseudogod is my favorite
Morbid Saint spotted.
My favorite album artwork:
Houkago Grind Time 2: The Second Raid
Mayhem - Chimera
Carcass - Swansong
Violet Cold - Empire of Love
My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours
Rammstein - Liebe is für Alle da
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Would it still lose shock value if its Buddha or Sidharta?
Visual Kei was my indirect way into metal.
For me, it's Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch. Mariusz Lewandowski has gone on to make a load of album covers recently, but the Mirror Reaper one in particular is his best work IMO.
Cure Pornography
Whitehouse Quality Time
Jethro Tull Under Wraps
Carcass Heartwork
Miserable Lover boy
some of my favorites
Fas?
Rick Ray-Ban 😂
personally a huge fan of all crass art, all by steve ignorant: the vocalist. Gotta love the first album The Feeding of the 5000, massive love to anything ripped from gustave dore and pseudo dore works like the fourth Hell album by blial cabal
albert?
Dissection somberlane
Agnostic front cause for alarm
Cerebral bore manical miscreation
Got nothing to do with the cover but SPK eventually turned into the Human League at their very lamest. I don't like throwing the 'sell out' accusation around but damn guys - show a shred of self respect.
I always love when the artwork is made in a comic book style, like rompeprop's gargle comics, but i really love Ghoul We Came for The Dead!!! Made by Jake Karns, a real comic artist!
To Mega Therion cover I always thought it depicts how Christ is used as a weapon by organized religion since ever
