    It has always amazed me how often the Beatles avoided to keep the same amount of harmonies by the end of the melodic line when it finally resolved into the tonic chord. If in the beginning we hear three voices than in the end it will be only two (like here) or if in the beginning there are two voice lines, then in the end it would often be only one. It shows a lot of sense of taste and the sense of measure that they had. In this way they were very much different from the American song-writing styles, in which the three lines would be kept till the very end of a tune like the Beach Boys, for example, often did.

    • @ovandolf
      @ovandolf 3 роки тому +26

      The Beach Boys did use that technique too quite often. In the Smile sessions, you can hear a lot of isolated vocal work where Brian wrote vocal arrangements that often started with a four part harmony and then use just two lines or one in the same section. Their version of Auld Lang syne also has that kind of style, it begins with two voices, then four etc.

      and yes at the end, less voices or unison... this also happens with great composers, or great choral music. Most ppl talk about The Beatles as a "social phenomenon" they don't have a clue of how brilliant they were musically speaking.

    Singing initially over a C major chord, Paul's first note is the 3rd note of the chord which is e, John's first note is the fifth note of the chord which is g, and George's first note is the root note of the chord which is c. If you play it on guitar, Paul's note is the open 1st string, John's note is the open 3rd string while George is the 2nd string 1st fret. Basically then, on the first note sung, Paul, John and George are singing the three notes that comprise the C major chord. Important lesson here for people wondering what singing harmony is all about.

      I find it interesting that The Beatles and The Bee Gees were two of the few bands around at the time who harmonised using a chord structure, eg major chord, root, third and fifth. Many other harmony bands like The Beachboys, the Doobie Brothers, CS&N and the Little River Band, seemed to harmonise in octaves. Eg each vocalist singing at the same note, but with separations of at least one octave. I’m not sure of the technique used by the Everly Brothers. It seemed to me that they sang in very close harmonies, maybe root and third?

    This is brilliant, thanks so much for isolating these! The difference in each performance is striking. Paul: Sounds fantastic, strong, very *present* as the chief singer/storyteller. George: Not quite on pitch, almost shy, but tasteful as he cuts out the final "people." John: Sings apathetically, certainly much less skillfully than someone of his talent should. Which is probably 'cause this is a Paul song. (Are there any similarly "I don't give a crap" performances from the others on a John song?) Yet despite differences in their engagement and skills, the three produce beautiful work.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 3 роки тому

      I disagree. Beatles tracks are exceedingly excellent, that's why they are who they are. Each vocal was carefully calculated to give the desired result, with many takes and ideas to get it right. The proof is in the blisteringly great result. How can it be blisteringly great if George is out of tune and John is apathetic? Beatles vocal stacks are stunning, every bit as good as, but actually better than, The Carpenters, The Beach Boys, The Lettermen, The Osmonds, and any other vocal group you could name. They are even better than those legendary groups because they sound like The Beatles, that Liverpool, cheeky personality comes through, making them something that we've only ever heard from the Beatles.

    • @kiwilerner
      @kiwilerner 3 місяці тому

      @@TheLarryBrown Ha, coming back to this three years late--typical of me! Anyway, I think you answered your own question--"How can it be blisteringly great if George is out of tune and John is apathetic?" Because greatness does not require perfection in every facet at every time. It's the quartets' idiosyncratic, unique, individual voices, tastes, sensibilities and emotional/mental engagement that created this extraordinary band. If they were all identical, perfectly in tune to 440hz like they were autotuned, what on earth would be so delightful, relatable, connectable or even *human* in such a group? (I'm saying "quartet" even though Ringo doesn't sing here because the same can be said for the Beatles as instrumentalists.)
      John's less-than-thrilled-sounding vocals--almost a drone--works as well as it does because as compassionate as the lyrics and song are, the harmonic voices are dissociated from the "lonely people." They're looking at them. Not all observers are empathizing--perhaps saying "yes, inevitably the lonely will always be among us." George's slightly under-pitch, fading line sounds like he's himself sad, either empathizing or actually including himself among the unfortunates. Paul, brighter and more technically gifted as a singer, adds the energy that leads these lines into an impassioned plea to pay attention.
      Revolver was *very* tightly produced, flaws and all, and if Paul wanted them all to sound like a chorus of pure angelic beauty, I've no doubt George & John would've been, um, encouraged to do so by George Martin, if not Paul himself. (He hadn't got to the level of OCD insistence that drove the others nuts in their last albums.) Perfect example is "Here, There and Everywhere," same album. The harmonies are just gorgeous, sweet, gentle, *pretty*. John ain't droning and George isn't sagging.
      This brief video could not be a better example of how the whole is even greater than the sum of its parts. Each singer is great. (Well, not entirely true...Paul and John were certainly great singers, indeed two of the best rock singers ever. George's unquestionable effectiveness as a singer was more in his musicality than the beauty or strength of his voice.) Together they are The Beatles, and that's the highest achievement to which no one else could aspire.

    @lennon1252 3 місяці тому

    In an October 2021 article in The New Yorker, McCartney wrote that his inspiration for "Eleanor Rigby" was an old lady who lived alone and whom he got to know very well. He would go shopping for her and sit in her kitchen listening to stories and her crystal radio set. McCartney said, "just hearing her stories enriched my soul and influenced the songs I would later write."
    McCartney wrote the melody and first verse alone, after which he presented the song to the Beatles when they were gathered in the music room of John Lennon's home at Kenwood. Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Lennon's childhood friend Pete Shotton all listened to McCartney play his song through and contributed ideas. Harrison came up with the "Ah, look at all the lonely people" hook. Starr contributed the line "writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear" and suggested making "Father McCartney" darn his socks, which McCartney liked. It was then that Shotton suggested that McCartney change the name of the priest, in case listeners mistook the fictional character for McCartney's own father. So Paul took his advise and looked through a phone book until he found 'McKenzie'.
    McCartney could not decide how to end the song, and Shotton suggested that the two lonely people come together too late as Father McKenzie conducts Eleanor Rigby's funeral. At the time, Lennon rejected the idea out of hand, but McCartney said nothing and used the idea, later acknowledging Shotton's help.
    McCartney also asked the advice of Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans.
    John Lennon expressed his resentment at the way McCartney had sought other bandmates' and friends' creative input, rather than collaborate with him directly. Lennon added, "That's the kind of insensitivity he would have, which upset me in later years.
    "Ah, look at all the lonely people" refrain over the song's final chorus. was requested by George Martin, who said he came up with the idea of the line working contrapuntally to the chorus melody.
