      As far as I can tell Blender uses CUDA cores to do the raytracing.
      A typical RTX application does one (!) raytracing pass and then uses a neural network to add detail.
      Blender needs to do hundreds of passes as it gathers the details for each pixel. Also, take into account the material simulation in Blender is probably more complex than the ones you can define in RTX.

    Seems for most games the real killer RT feature is ray traced global illumination. The shadows and reflections are nice and all but the real scene changing stuff comes from GI. • @stonedassnecoarc

      To me at least the reflections are the most noticeable change. While full global illumination would be nice, almost no games use it yet because it is just so hard to run, and even then, the only time it does much is in dark areas with minimal lighting sources, for example, dark caves with a few torches in minecraft.
      Reflections are far more noticeable and improved overall, all for minimal performance drops. DOOM Eternal's RT reflections are really well done and the non RT global illumination looks extremely good as well.

    Ive always wondered, what happens if you solder more memory modules to the empty space?

    • @Cortanakya
      @Cortanakya Рік тому +6

      Technically doable. You'd also need to flash a hacked bios that was able to manage the added memory, and you might run into issues with artificially limited memory channels (e.g., if nvidia used poorly binned silicon for the lower tier cards like Intel does then there might be no physical connection between the actual gpu and the memory channels for the newly installed vram). If nvidia didn't A) physically sever the data lanes for the memory and B) you could convince the bios on the card, the bios on your computer, the drivers on your computer, and the memory management across the whole... Well, then sure! It might be as simple as soldering it on and flashing the bios from a higher tiered card (e.g., a 3090 with 24gb ram) and matching the memory one-to-one with the flashed bios's expected memory configuration. You'd then just have to tell the card to limit itself to only using the CUDA/RTX cores that your 3050 actually has (so it doesn't attempt to compute data on cores that don't exist) and also limit the max power draw for the card to match the specifications of the 3050. Things like fan speed control and display output should just work as-is.
      Super simply: yes, that's basically what nvidia/MSI/Asus etc do. They produce thousands of boards that can accept several GPU configurations (3050/3060/3060ti/3070 etc) and simply stamp the required components onto the board. You could absolutely do that yourself but anybody with the knowledge and skills required to do so almost certainly wouldn't need to do so as they likely have a very profitable job working for nvidia already and could just buy a brand new 4090ti ;)

    Ray tracing is more an industrial thing. RTX cards are noticeably better at rendering 3D scenes, baking lights in unreal, and other industrial stuff than their non-RTX counterparts. Real time ray tracing in games isn’t really too viable in games rn, as much as it runs amicably on even the 2060 and 3050. It’s gonna be a few years yet until RTX is a staple, and even longer until it’s worth it to the average gamer, but for anything non-real time or non-gaming, RTX a wonderful feature and a massive time saver

    ray tracing at this point is just a tease anyway. It is awesome eyecandy and I hope the tech keeps getting better and games n whatnot get on board more too. RT is going to be something that will immerse you more into your experience, it can be a tool to bring more realistic stuff to your eyes or super realistic, the super part we got, we can just make it up and see what looks good, for realistic its gonna take a LOT of work. There is a bandwidth of rays we still do not "trace" or calculate. Subtle variances, interactions and conditions that effect everything. Adding all this together can make a scene indistinguishable from the real thing. Now we have screens that can show more detail than our eyes can see we can push the limits of cg calculations

      @JorgeDimton 3 місяці тому

      @@alexturnbackthearmy1907 First of all, if there is a difference in energy consumption. Not everyone has power supplies of 500w or more, I know that power supplies are not especially expensive but they are an expense, and they get more expensive the more bats they have. I talk about energy consumption by source, and to a lesser extent but with equal importance, electricity expenditure. That's point number one. Point number two: The RTX 3050, although in my opinion it is not worth it, it is cheap. Very cheap, costing less than $200 for the 8 gigabytes of vram model. That is, for a little more money, compared to what a 1660Ti or 1660 Super costs, you have the RTX 3050 that comes with 8 gigabytes of vram, and not the 6 gigabytes that all GTX 1660 models have, in addition to coming with more power (Since the RTX 3050 performs the same, or similar, as the GTX 1070. That is, it is more powerful than the GTX 1660, 1660Ti and 1660 Super). Without mentioning that it comes with DLSS 2.4 and supports Ray tracing: Bad, of course, since the 3050 is the least powerful RTX, but it can handle ray tracing and does it much better than the very limited ability to handle Ray tracing that the GTX has 1660, 1660Ti and 1660 Super. That and the 3050 consumes less energy, therefore, it does not need a source of more than 500 watts, and therefore, your electricity expenditure is lower. And all for, at best, $150... the same $150 that the GTX 1660, 16060Ti and 1660 Super cost you. Bottom line: The RTX 3050 is absolutely, and without a doubt, a much better option than the 1660, 1660Ti and 1660 Super. But it's better at everything, literally everything. There isn't a single thing that the 1660, and its models, are better at. Literally NOTHING.

Dying Light 2 is the only 1 of those 3 that actually made my jaw drop when I turned on ray tracing, and it's during the night time where it truly stands out. Ray tracing is really more of a developer helper than anything else. Baking lighting into games without ray tracing is an archaic mess of work-arounds and fudging. But it's a mess that people in the game developing world have gotten very used to (since it is literally the only way games have had lighting since games were a thing - with few exceptions). With ray tracing, the developer can put a light in a scene and it just works - no fudging needed. If you don't notice much of a difference with ray tracing enabled, it means that the developers did a great job with fudging the lighting.
      DLSS, on the other hand, just seems like fudging to me. If I play a game at a certain resolution, I want the game to render at that resolution. I may be skewed in my opinion a little since I've been using 4k monitors for so long, but I can immediately notice the drop in resolution with DLSS on. I would much rather just tinker with the settings for a few minutes for a game to run smoothly.

Yeah it crushes fps but that’s on the game developers, the lower end specs of the ps5 can run rt just fine.
