- Here's a very rare Robert Wadlow interview from 1937! I typed what they were saying to the best of my ability, so some words may be a little off. Nevertheless, enjoy!

Hi everyone! I've created a new website all about Robert and I'd love it if you could check it out. Besides this interview, it also has amazing photos, info and more! Keep on smiling! :)

These videos you've posted are absolutely great finds! I too have been fascinated by Robert Wadlow and his story...not just his phenomenal height but about what he was really like as a person. It truly sounds like I'd have liked to have been his friend. I look forward to visiting your new webpage!
@The Radio Vault-The World War II Years 1938-1945- I've heard that song once before. It's been added to the site! :)
@@britishchick09 Goliath was over 9 ft tall.
He was 9'9".
Imagine somebody or someone who is tall as Goliath like over 9 ft tall like 9'7" or 9'9" or short of 10 ft
How would you guy's react if somebody's as tall as Goliath like way taller than Robert Wadlow?
And how much that person weigh if he was like the same height as Goliath like 9'9"?
Fantastic job on the site with all the pictures of Robert.
Thank you very Much for This website very conplete,i Search for many many year for theses pictures!
Lot of theses are pretty nice and i never see this,on particular in the period of 1919-1929 and the last year of His life on 1940,the pics are exceptionnal for this period 😀
It's incredible that someone so renowned for their height lone was also a small-town kid, who was incredibly intelligent and well-spoken. Robert Wadlow seems like a cool guy
Nathan Kerr l
+Nathan Kerr I watched the documentary about Robert, and it said he had an outlook on life that was pretty rare, especially for somebody his age. I have a feeling he knew that his life would be short, and that's probably why. I would have loved to have met him, or at least even seen him, with my own eyes. Alas, he died before two of my grandparents were even born.
Nathan Kerr he did pocket the big show but still couldn't push Edna off the ball (who was playing holding in a 352) and may I add he moves like a dinner lady
Nathan Kerr I feel one of the very unappreciated things about bobby was his ability to strike a bond with someone who he had barely met, for example one of his defensive partners VALAK. Valak isn’t the easiest of lasses to get along with, but Robert managed to engage in a moving friendship with the interdimensional demon in a matter of minutes. R.I.P Bobby Wadlow - 37 AA - 409lbs - 272cm - 8’11.1 (correction 490lbs)
Leana Jo I actually don’t believe you. People like you fucking disgust me with your heinous vocabulary and kind regards. Bob was a monster cannibal who just went round trampling over innocents, the stupid fucking giant. He was utter shite at centre half for me and to be honest, got shown up by the big show up top in an agility based contest.
He was so well adjusted which says a lot about his family and community. Sad that he only lived to be 22 years of age.
Always felt sorry for Robert; he seemed to be a nice young man, too
How did he die

Its so strange how people talked back then, it isnt really that long ago but its so different.
It's scripted which definitely accounts for the... cadence of the conversation.
The accent the interviewer has is put on.
James Helliwell I always think that too
The recording media of the time made people sound different. It's slightly sped up, so, in fact, Robert Wadlow's voice was actually slightly deeper.
Its called the transatlantic accent. It was a learned accent that was fashionable in the early 20th century.
This is adorable. He's so passionate about the history of his hometown you almost forget about his height. And then he's no longer "the tallest man who ever lived" to you, he's "Robert Wadlow the nice young man you can tell you lots and lots about Alton Illinois"
Indeed! ♥
Love the fact that the interviewer showed him respect and most importantly let him speak. Despite his short lived life Wadlow was a gift to the world and to his family.
Indeed!! :D
I also love that he urged him to speak about his hyperfixations and interests. You could tell Robert was a bit shy, but the speaker was so polite and encouraged him while never interrupting him.
God bless you!.. Jesus saves sinners! God bless you
Although his voice was deep, you could still hear the child like wonder in his voice at 18-19 years old. You could tell this young man loved life, but sadly was cursed/blessed with the disease of giganticism. Sadly his body grew itself to death.... Really feel bad for the guy.
he actually didnt die from his height ironically but he died fro ma foot infection caused by his brace
His voice wasn't deep. He never went into puberty. This is what made the case so curious as he is the only known sufferer of a hyperactive pituitary gland not do so eventually. More importantly, not reaching puberty is why he never stopped growing, as it is what causes the brain to signal the gland to stop vertical growth. There are examples of other people with hyperactive pituitary glands who went through puberty in their early 20s, so it's possible he would have too had he lived.
@@LS-jk3fk His height is what indirectly caused his death. His heart struggled to circulate blood through his growing body and the poor circulation led to numbness in his lower legs. So when he got a blister on his foot which later became infected, it wasn't detected in time as he couldn't' feel it. He sadly then died from that infection.
@@MVK123 I came here to second what you said. While we can't prove this irrefutably of course, it stands to reason that cardiac insufficiency and peripheral vascular issues were likely contributing factors to his demise for the reasons you just mentioned. We see that all too often in larger people.
He has a child like voice cos the gigantism stopped his puberty
Despite his intellectualism and soft spokenness, you can still hear him as just the young teen he was. Excited to visit New York and talk about his hobbies. Good heart. It’s too bad he died so young. “And TWA does have some very pretty hostesses.”
Also, listening him to talk about playing basketball was awesome. Guy must’ve been a dangerous center, lol.
He wasn't a center. He was a dropper. 😂
God bless you!... Jesus saves sinners
His voice is so heavy!
Bob's lips and tongue were out of proportion due to acromegaly, a disorder which usually goes along with gigantism. You have to concentrate a little but he's perfectly understandable.
Its because as a result of gigantism which is what Robert had. He had a tumor in his pituitary gland and symptoms of these included a thickened facial frame, and also a thicker larynx, which is why him and women of very tall height, sound so deep :)
His Voice is very similiar to my Voice.
+Patrick Berger
SHUT UR BITCH ASS UP liar
Ive had of age 15 a deeper Voice than most Men with 40 years.hahahah
He's sounded like such a sweet, kind-hearted and intelligent man. Such a shame he passed away at a young age. 😞
Rest in peace Robert Wadlow. 🌹
This is probably the most interesting thing I have seen on UA-cam.
Agreed, the most interesting video I've ever seen. Really worth all the time spent around
Then you obviously have never heard of VSauce.
Well perhaps this video of 19th century Jerusalem which might overcome this ua-cam.com/video/JLzs2iJkGok/v-deo.html, or this recording of Otto Von Bismarck's voice ua-cam.com/video/czko31-6O8I/v-deo.html

First interview of his I've ever heard. Sounded like a real nice fella.
Damn his voice was deep.
Jackson Thomason because of his heighht
no shit

It’s an effect that goes with gigantism, basically since he is so big, his voice box is stretched out making a lower, deeper sound
God, this man just seems so interesting to talk to. Never mind his astounding height, I just want to sit down and talk with him about the beauty of the world. He seems like such a laid back guy. Such a shame he died so young
God bless you! Jesus saves sinners
One of my absolute idols since I was a kid, I didn’t look up to any comic superhero’s, Robert was my real life superhero. A man who grew so tall sparked my imagination, when I got into my 20s I’ve researched him as much as I can, it’s amazing to know he was also extremely intelligent and polite. I hope the world celebrates this great man for many more generations to come!
He's my hero, too! :)
Did you "look up" to him?
@@michaelsuder486Ahh I see what you did there 😂

Good interviewer. Asked about something other than "what's it like to be so tall?"
Although his voice is deep and hard to understand at first, he’s just so down to earth and relaxed and genuinely nice that you can get use to the sound of his voice and forget that it sounds deeper than a regular persons voice
His voice sure is something, isn't it? It's quite relaxing :)
His voice is actually quite normal for a male. The only thing that makes his voice seem deeper is the very dark timbre of his voice, which is a very common symptom of gigantism. Comparing Robert’s voice to the gentleman conducting the interview, Robert actually speaks at a higher pitch.
"hes just so down to earth"..
Gentle Giant
Robert was a wonderful man I think. I'm very sorry that he died at such a young age. I believe he had a good life. Every time I come back to him with my thoughts I'm so sad that he died so quickly ... by stupid infection :( His smile is still grateful! Robert someday we will meet!
I love how patient the radio host was with him. You don't see that level of restraint today.
They're reading from scripts genius
@@minchalop What are you basing that claim on?
Back in 1980, I did an science presentation about Robert. I made comparable cutouts of his hands and feet from available information to show size and dimension. The reaction from my classmates was priceless.
I bet you got an A for such an amazing project! :D
@@britishchick09 That would be a fun project to do not gonna lie!

An intelligent man indeed. Sad that he died so young, and with how he died. If he was alive now with access to modern medicine, he most certainly would have survived from what he had.
He probably wouldn't have grown to the height he did with today's medicine. There was a guy that had the same condition as wadlow, and they did surgery on him to take the tumor out that was causing his growth. After they did that, he stopped growing at 7'8" tall. If they left it in, he would have kept growing until he died.

The Piasa Bird story was interesting and amazing that he know about Elijah Lovejoy. He was a good storyteller. Its rare today that someone that young would find such folklore interesting., which is why so much of that would die out
It's 2022 and I'm listening to an interview from 1937 on my smartphone, weird. Hearing them talk about photography is amazing, considering how it was back then compared to the IG of today.
And by the time he died he was 8ft 11 and 1/2. Incredible how much he grew in the final two years of his life. Hell, the other years too but this clip just goes to show.
The radio host did a phenomenal job
He seems very educated, a shame he didn't live for many more years.
I like how he talked of his brother
It was a very sweet moment! ♥
Then he was 8 foot 7 and right before he died he was 8 foot 11
By the time of his death there was no sign if his growth stopping!
R.I.P Robert Wadlow.
He seemed like such a chill and down-to-earth guy! I woulda loved to meet him! RIP Bob
Why people seem to be very articulate back then ?
It's scripted.
No (c) rap back in 1937???
Actually, Charlie, it was called "Mid-Atlantic."
Correct. The mid atlantic accent was so called due to its dualistic nature, of being halfway between british and american language in a sense, and in application thereof. It doesn't have an actual geographical origin but was used in media as well as by sophisticates to some degree.
I also read somewhere that those microphones picked up a higher pitched voice better. Which explains the almost monotone quality of the accent I suppose. They never let their voice dip down to lower ranges
explains why Bob is so much harder to understand here
It’s sad this was only three years before his death
He was crazily intelligent and a normal man besides his height.
Thank you very much for uploading this. I was looking for a sample of his voice, and found this fascinating. A shame about his physical complications.

I would've felt so honoured to of had many conversations with Robert, he sounds like he was lovely, well adjusted, well mannered gentleman
Its interesting that people with Gigantism or pituitary gland syndrome, as both may be, i am not a doctor, have a similar tone to their voice. Oddly, its like its slowed down in tone. Sounds almost fake, but we have all heard Andre. This is so amazing, i love it beyond my belief. To put a voice to the pictures i saw as a child to the face is something special to me. And so wondrous. Thank you for putting this up on UA-cam :)
It's partially because acromegaly causes the size of the vocal folds and tongue to increase, creating a deeper voice, and dysarthric speech.
this is great, enjoyed listening to him immensely! Thank you for posting this!
You're very welcome! :D
What a great interviewer! Open questions, looking for common interests and lets Bob talk. So pleasant!
Happy Birthday to Robert Pershing Wadlow February 22nd 1918 - July 15th 1940
This is so cool! I remember reading about Mr. Wadlow as a kid and to hear his voice is surreal; really brings the man to life from the black and white photos that are all I otherwise knew. Thank you!
It's still so incredible to hear him! :D
Thanks for sharing this interview with Robert Wadlow. With social media and our faced paced world today It is hard to believe there was a time when folks were easily impressed and would gather around the radio to hear a good story.
Wow, this is a GEM of an audio recording!!! This is SUPER-RARE!!! A 19 year old ROBERT PERSHING WADLOW...WOW!!! Just think, he was 8'7 here. He was 8'11 at 22 years old. He grew 4 more inches by that time. So that means he GREW OVER AN INCH each year, until the time of his death. Robert, may u REST IN PEACE. He was truly a GENTLE GIANT!
This amazing, great Job Britishchick09!

Very, sophisticated and well spoken for the time and place he was from.

This was a great video. The interviewer focused mostly on other things besides how tall he is and how it makes him feel so different. I imagine he was tired of questions about his height. This interview probably made him feel just like everyone else. And it was awesome how proud of his little brother he was.
Thank you, BC09! I had only known him as a tall, smartly dressed, bent over gentleman.
You're welcome!! :D

It was a good idea ot list captions of this conversation. Wadlow's voice is so deep and heavy that it's difficult at times to understand what he says. But because of his immense size such a heavy should be expected.
Sounds quite intelligent and informed about history.
He sounds exactly how i thought he'd sound. The Andre the Giant type muffled voice,

That would have been awesome to see him in action, pacing the room during a court trial. I wish he could have practiced Law before he passed away.
and he still grew to 8’11 and a half at age 22
This sounds like it was read from an essay. What intelligent people lol what happened
Yeah, but would get boring after a while hearing someone talk from a script. I like the raw and natural interviews better, but its cool to listen to these old ones
The interviewer keeps bringing up circus to a intellectual giant
the purpose of the interview was prob to promote the circus
Circuses were a big thing back in the early 20th century. They would have wanted to promote it and get people intrigued. Since being a part of the circus was similar to getting into Hollywood back then. You needed skill or natural talent.
This is proof that giants would’ve had very deep voices. But then again if I’m not mistaken, didn’t every organ in his body grow as well as his body? He had a massive heart if I’m not mistaken :/. Pretty sad
This is actually so cool
I wish we still talked this way.
Yes he seems cool giant to talk to
His voice is not on a lower tone than the voice of the interviever. its just different formats, eg. overtones, that give the different sound. While the Interviewer has his palate sail and tonge up his nose, bob has has te tonge down his throat.... that wat makes them sound different,.
Are you saying he was lowering it on purpose? Or just had a different method of producing sound than the interviewer?
No no,he has a really low Voice. Its not just the Format. My voice is similiar to Roberts but im only 6 foot 6 inches tall. Most people are scared of my Voice.Ive had alway much Bass since i was 19 years old, mbut then i started to smoke much Marihuana and drunk a lot of Beer and now i am 35 years old and my Voice is ultra deep like roberts or Andre the giants.I like my Voice.
Alysha. He is talking bullshit. His and my Voice are low because weve have very large Adamsapple. When i was 14 years old my adams apple was twice the size of an 30 year old Male.My mother saw my apple and she said to me.When you grow up you will have a very deep voice. The Human Voice is made by your lungs, adams apple and Testosteron.
Patrick Berger
It doesn't really mean that much to me. Perhaps It is hard to fully guage the type of voice sometimes because the microphones of the time didn't pick up all of the little nuances. The microphone could have been making both people sound higher pitched than they actually were, or it may not have been able to pick up on the bass in Robert's voice. To me, his voice sounds pretty normal pitched, maybe even a little high in some spots...but it could just be the microphones. Another thing to consider is that the sound has to go through UA-cam conversions (notice the highest quality available is 240p), which could distort the sound and make it higher pitched. I don't know all about audio, but it seems like a reasonable theory.
i mean, he was 8 foot 11, I think his voice would be deep xD
Always wondered what he sounded like
At 2:22 Robert is describing what others have also reported in striking detail. The “bird” is a pterosaur, and some are still reporting seeing them today.
What a nice chap. Very interesting.
He definitely was! :D
3:24 I'm pretty sure he says Shower of arrows.
