I grew up in Alton, Illinois and my mother (1926 - 2019) knew Robert Wadlow as they both lived in the Upper Alton area and went to the same school, although were not in the same grades. Mom said that he always had time to say Hello to her. He was a gentleman and well-respected in Alton and never treated as a freak by those in his home town.

I learned about Robert as a child, while reading the Guiness Book of World Records. That was pretty much all there was to read about him, for the local libraries had nothing else. When I first got the internet, one of the first things I did was look for information about him. As time went by I enjoyed reading whatever I could find. Not only about him but others of great height, like Andre the Giant. In 2007 I was diagnosed with Acromegaly. When the doctor told me, I knew exactly what she was describing. I had read it all before about Robert. As my health gradually got worse I would read about Robert. Read about how well mannered he was, always with a smile. I would imagine just how rough it was for him, with his joints in pain just moving from place to place. Yet he never complained. What an inspiration he remains to this day, at least for me. We were blessed by God with this Man. A great blessing indeed.
