Steely Dan is definitely a rabbit hole worth falling down! Enjoy their great music, they had extremely talented musicians and sound engineers. Superb mixing.
The song is profound in many ways; it's about Violence, Women, and Money and how men keep making the same mistakes again and again. The cycle of life keeps happening again and again. That's what I love about Steely Dan, smart, great instrumentation, witty lyrics that make you think.
The closest I can come to are Through With Buzz, which seems more like a sketch than a complete song, and the cover of East St. Louis Toodle-oo was just unnecessary filler for a great LP like PRETZEL LOGIC. Maybe KINGS, since it's the weakest song on CAN'T BUY A THRILL.
The first song on the first side of their first album... This is the right way to begin your journey down the rabbit hole of all musical rabbit holes!!!
The song “Do It Again” by Steely Dan was released in 1972 and was written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. The guitar player on the track is Denny Dias
This is the best kind of smooth riding time machine...swoops me right back in the best, coolest way. Just lay back & let it wash right over you. Endorphin rush.
I was a little boy when this came out and heard it on my Moms radio station lots of times. I didn't understand what he was singing about but I remember loving this groove. I thought this was a Latin band like Santana for a long time.
RIP Walter Becker, one of the best electric guitarists of his generation. It's about people being stuck in self destructive cycles, be it getting in trouble with the law, gambling, falling in love with people who are only going to hurt you, etc. Mr. Becker had a long term battle with heroin and other substances so, that may have been part of the inspiration for these lyrics.
The lyrics of this song are dark, but there is 6.1 minutes of amazing music. Steely Dan ran hundreds to tracks to every song and only recorded the best. Play this song when you are on the treadmill and you will find yourself dancing through your workout! Hey Nineteen, FM and Peg are other songs you should check out.
OK here's another rhythm I could live in, have lived in, this is exemplary, I still don't know how to play this on any instrument, this overall feel, this groove, evades me, it's just so freaking delicious! The lyrics, the tale, is timeless; a masterpiece of composition, execution and studio recording perfection.
I had suggested White Rabbit about a month ago and gave him this URL: ua-cam.com/video/pV5bpc_dH1M/v-deo.html from a TV show in the 60's and Grace Slick is remarkable.
Another very nice reaction and analysis. Explore more! The Dan will get you hooked but no worries, they have a wealth of wonderful music to choose from filled with great lyrics, often with a humorous flavor. "My Old School" is a jam with a great guitar riff from Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Song is about a drug bust at Bard college in Annandale-on- Hudson, N.Y. when Donald and Walter were attending. Great lyrics. Another is "Kid Charlemagne", about a chemist named Owsley Stanley who supplied LSD to many Rock Bands till he was busted. This song also has an awesome guitar solo from jazz great Larry Carlton. This is just a small tip of the iceberg to what is a deep catalogue of the musical genius of Steely Dan! Suffice it to say that you can't miss with the unique sound of the Dan! ENJOY! RIP MR. BECKER.
Can't Buy a Thrill SD first album you'd be hard pressed to find a debut album like this. Not a bad song on this album or any of SD albums. Been a fan since 73. This is what talented musicians sound like. You should react to a few more songs on this album and you'll be a fan in no time.
JM Earlier in your other video you asked the question if you should put something other than music videos. I've seen others of them kick their ''azz'' doing what you want to do. If you read your comments, you have several new subscribers who subscribe to your channel precisely because they like the way you react to what you listen to. Keep expanding your musical universe as you do. You went from Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin to Steely Dan. Nothing prevents you from starting another channel with other kinds of videos. It would be silly to see your subscribers leave.
My favorite lines: "Then you love a little wild one and she brings you only sorrow, all the time that she's been smilin' you'll be on your knees tomorrow..." The human condition in 3 verses, backed by a fantastic groove, keyboards, and electric sitar. This song was our introduction to Steely Dan.
Steely Dan was really just two guys plus whatever musicians they brought in to make a song. The guitarist here is using some sort of attachment that makes an electric guitar an electric sitar...which gives it that jangly sound. Regardless I consider this one of the more impressive rock guitar solos ever. Their lyrics are rarely obvious. Sometimes it's hard to tell if they're mocking someone/something, whom or what it is, and why. That's the fun. One can spend a lot of time pondering lyrics, but this one is pretty straightforward. The dude is a loser.
"Do It Again" In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water And you fire 'til he is done in but they catch you at the border And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round You go back, Jack, do it again When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend In a room with your two-timer, and you're sure you're near the end Then you love a little wild one and she brings you only sorrow All the time you know she's smilin' you'll be on your knees tomorrow, yeah You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round You go back, Jack, do it again Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turnin' 'round and 'round You go back, Jack, do it again
We know the lyrics , Thank you. , and understand the meaning . Lot of time on your hands ? ...gotta go. I'm in London England, off to do a night shift in busy trauma ward. Steely Dan. Kid Charlemagne next please . About a guy who used to sell spliffs at Grateful Dead concerts back in the 60 s allegedly !!Have a good and blessed day/night to you all. ❤
@@sallybannister6224 YOU may know all the lyrics to every song ever written, many don't including our host. Yes, being happily Retired gives me plenty of time to do just as I like each day. gotta go. Thank You
love your reactions and the look of discovery on your face. You are down a classic rock rabbit hole and really appreciating. you should listen to Peg and actually the WHOLE AJA album.
They are the geartesr Jazz/Rock fusion band of all time! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Steely Dan, your favorite bands favorite band 🔥🤘✌
Steely Dan is bomb!!!
Very talented musicians, perfect mixing, exquisitely produced. Need to do a deep dive into their catalog.💪
If you're unfamiliar with Steely Dan's work, it's a wormhole well worth the time venturing down.
Absolutely!
Great, werent they ? I loved " Hey Nineteen ". It was cheeky, seventies summer music. Excellent !
You hear it all the time for many bands: "They never made a bad song". This is the only band where I think that is literally true!
My fav of theirs is Aja.
The whole Aja album is all bangers.
Heard this on the radio back then, went out to buy the album - the rest as they say is history.
The way millions heard these two songs for decades... SANTANA - Black Magic Woman / Oye Como Va
That electric sitar by Denny gets me every time. Since '72.
The first song on the first side of their first album... This is the right way to begin your journey down the rabbit hole of all musical rabbit holes!!!
A constant source of esoteric lyrics, mixing and musicianship. This band has it all and has stood the test of time.
I fully enjoyed watching your reaction to this one👏
"Steely Dan".... You did them again. as the title says. Another Top Self Tune from these guys. Another Top Self Reaction.
A masterpiece. Layers and layers. Always had to listen every time it came on the radio.
Great reaction man.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.

The starting point for serious musical and lyrical growth for Becker, Fagen et alia.

This is another classic song from them. Great choice!
More Steely Dan please! Would love to see your smiling eyes react to "My Old School".
BRO...These guys have SO MANY good ones!
I damned LOVE whrn people hear Steely Dan for the first time. 💯😎🤣

That was Denny Diaz playing a sitar like a guitar
Dear sir, you nailed the meaning. Hit me hard when it came out, but more as I get soooooooo much older.
It’s as if Jazz and Rock spent a drunken night in a cheap motel….9 months later Steely Dan was born 😜
I think you're right. makes perfect sense.
Still grooves and has held up over time!💥💥💥💥
Always puts a smile on my face ❤

@@dabassmann That's the one to watch. I 1st recommend it back in February, then I forget, SO many Great Tunes.
Oh yeah, cruising around town listening to one of my favorites albums out of the back seat full of 8 track tapes I had
Nice choice. Maybe a little funky song like "Show Biz Kids", in near future would be 👍. Nicely done, sir.
Back in the 80's, somebody did a mash up of this and Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. It was pretty interesting.
More , please .
Warning :
Really hard to find a less than stellar tune in their vast inventory .
The Pointer Sisters covered a couple Steely Dan songs, and they were great too. I suggest Pointer Sisters, "Fire".
Yes yes yes for the Pointer Sisters! Yes We Can Can, Neutron Dance, Jump, Fire....and the list goes on.

Check out "New Frontier" by Donald Fagan. The song is awesome, and the video is early '60s art, some of my favorite.

Saw Steely Dan last year at the Hollywood Bowl. Fantastic show. One disappointment, however, they did not play this (my favorite SD) song.
Nice to see that you wait until the song is over before you comment. Many others keep interrupting during the song.
