Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Are the Funkiest Young Duo in the NBA | J. Kyle Mann
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2021
- Fresh off being one of the worst teams in the NBA during the 2020-21 season, Sam Presti and the Oklahoma City Thunder are still slowly attacking their rebuild. In doing so, they've assembled a group of unusual yet talented players-but do these odd pieces add up to anything worthwhile? In this video, J. Kyle Mann takes a look at their roster while focusing on the dynamic between fourth-year point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey, the deft passing rookie from Australia.

The music reference points and calling Giddey’s inside craft as “old-man game,” were premium lol
Word
If Giddey was a magic card, which wizard would he be? Snapcaster Mage?
That's some anthony fantano typa shi
Nice pfp ;)
Yeah but he's no weirdo, having a unique style with a purpose is a gift, not everyone has to be a stereotype.
This video title has now become very ironic
I mean you totally nailed it. OKC content in the national media is... rare to say the least, and even when it arrives it usually seems like that person watched a few highlights and called it a day. Fun to see someone put a lot of the thoughts I've had here and there into a single cohesive spot. Really hope Giddey can become a respectable shooter, seems like the key to unlocking him from a good starter to All-Star potential.
They would trade Giddey if a young star becomes available tbh hes a 6ft8 ricky rubio hes a good playmaker and a good rebounder
If he can score consistently the sky is the limit
@@letstalk140 I agree, but it's even worse than that. Rubio came into the league as a much better defender than Giddey. Same with Lonzo Ball.
@@letstalk140 They’re definitely not trading him
@@letstalk140 Have u ever watched ricky rubio play, when he shooting well he is all u could want in pg he just inconsistent, so if giddey is already 6’ 8” ricky rubio at 19 im perfectly fine with that, hes only gonna get better
Kyle is on another level... his analysis, paired with his jokes and puns (Entropic Thunder... come on), make him the most entertaining and informative basketball content creator on UA-cam
Him and thinking basketball
@@TheIcemanthomas I stopped watching and listening to Thinking Basketball, the numbers-obsession got to be too much, took away from the actual feel and flow of the game. Ben Taylor is upper mid tier, but J Kyle Mann is in a league of his own.
Best content out there
Check out Clayton Crowley - him and Kyle are my two favourite basketball creators and it's a big dropoff to third place.
@@AB-sw4kb Ben is not just a stat nerd, he does as much film study as any NBA analyst, if not more. Idk what you’ve been watching.
Josh Giddey definitely on Team Weirdo
Don't forget Giddey just dropped 19-8-7 on the Jazz. That's pretty impressive. He can score and he's going to be a great player once he figures out how to avoid his weaknesses.
Scouts claimed the entire game of basketball was his weakness lmao what clowns
@@ConnorSimonis Exactly. Scouts only like high flying athletes and 3 point sharpshooters. They never gave Giddey credit for the amazing passing he's shown at such a young age. Looking forward to watching him develop into a player that leads the league in assists. And he gets rebounds like a power forward.
I'd rather he work on his weaknesses, and possibly turn them into his strengths than avoid them. Because Simmons seems to have completely tried to avoid his most glaring weakness and we all know how that's turned out.
I like Giddey but he needs to work on his consistency moving forward in terms of scoring. He can be a liability at times on defense and his FT % is poor. He has potential but realistically has a long way to go.
His points still stand. Giddey is impressive but you cant be a good scorer/multi-faceted player and shoot sub 30% on C&S and off the bounce. I'm not seeing great defensive player potential so his largest impact will need to happen on offense.
I'm not even an okc fan but these two are two of my favorite guys to watch. Your analysis of their unique play style is exactly why. They have a beautiful flair to their games. Reminds me of a young Steph and Klay, not in terms of play style but in terms of a young duo who have unlimited potential together
Josh giddey has a low ceiling but shai can be great one day
@@letstalk140 A 19 year old 6'8 point guard with high basketball IQ and work ethic? Imma check back this comment 5 years. I dont' think he'll be an all star but he can be a real contributor of a good team.

@@DW-rs1pr his offensive game is average
As a Thunder fan that watches pretty much every game I think this couldn't be more spot on. No complaints here
I rarely see OKC content and am so used to seeing sga get ripped on, imo SGA is one of the most underrated players in the league
@@duffal0 true and imo donovan mitchell and brandon ingram too
@@brent-9239 I agree with Donovan Mitchell, haven’t watched a lot of NOP this year so idk about Ingram especially considering he hasn’t really helped them win much, but maybe. I think Dejounte is underrated asf too
@@duffal0 trueeee and yea nop is being caried by jonas and ingram rn
fr no misses here
It’s nice to see a national media outlet saying actual nice things about OKC and their players for once, instead of calling us a “black eye on the NBA.”
I'm pretty sure almost everybody thinks Presti is a genius for everything they've done. You didn't even get fined for sitting Horford for half the season lol only negative I hear about them is the fact that they're clearly just rolling young guys out there.
@@onekidarmy well no big stars wanna go to Oklahoma
@@dhdhdhrrr yeah. Lol no one said they do. I'm just saying the "media" isn't out here besmirching the Thunder for being a black eye on the NBA. One guy said that. Most of the media is praising them for thinking long term.
Stole the sonics. Always gonna be a disgrace

Love to see it. Awesone video that even nailed the roster analysis at the end. Drummer comps were top-notch.
Always phenomenal work. So thankful to have you producing such beautiful work @jkylemann!
Title did not age well
Man thank you for sharing these videos with the world. I’ve been watching your videos almost since the beginning and I have to say you’re by far my favorite basketball related channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work !
THANK YOU GUYS FOR THIS VIDEO
this is the only video that is simply sports analysis that i ove to watch over and over and over again
Commentary on this is absolutely beautiful. Great job!!
How am I just seeing this! Great analysis bro 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
This is the best basketball video I’ve seen this year. Great stuff
I love your videos so much, the music, the pop culture and movie references, the real like metaphors like related to dating, your witty writing, perfect. Chefs kiss. Your videos make me forget about the downs in life. I could watch you for ever jkm. Appreciate your content. Imo best to ever do it. 🐐 baaaaaaa
I'm only 2 mins in but the analogy of point guards to drummers was so informative yet articulate. Hats off.
Not even an OKC fan but this was a great watch. Thanks for the breakdown. Elite commentary.
Great content. If they can keep SGA and get a big free agency name, I think they can do something, Post KD, LeBron, Steph era. Otherwise, just a good team with good pieces that sell tickets to a great fan base.
Oklahoma aren’t signing a marquee free agent bro 😂
@@gdbssa yea we straight drafting 😭
Once they start winning and their core develops, they can consider making trades or other moves. I wouldn't bother too much with free agents unless they see a player they think fits what they're trying to build.
Now this is a channel with good basketball analysis. Subscribed
Loved the whole weirdo aspect of this video, that's one of my favorite parts of the entire sport. Skill-sets that don't traditionally fit into a body/frame are so interesting to me. The best part is, it's bound to get weirder :). Stay rad Kyle
Yep agree, it's not some boring textbook NBA video, it actually has personality
This was a very high quality video. Marvellous
This analysis and commentary is so entertaining. The fact Kyle can deep dive like this into one of the worst teams in the nba like this is so cool. Nerding out to the nba is one of my favorite past times.
As an OKC fan I love watching this team. We might be one of the most entertaining “bad teams” I’ve seen in a long time. Every game is chalk full of some Giddey passes that make your jaw drop, Dort defensive lockdowns, and a Poku play that looks ridiculous. I’m not even gonna mention SGA because in my opinion he is one of the most underrated guard in the league, everything he does is amazing to watch. I wish he got more media attention for it, but it’ll come one day.
@@duffal0 I've been following the Thunder fairly consistently since they came. TBH, this year is one of my favorites to watch so far. They're so damn bad but the there are flashes in each game that is so fun to watch. Each game is basically two teams duking it out. They're usually pretty close and win or lose by a few points. The comebacks are ridiculous. It's much more entertaining to watch a bad team when you're tanking and wins don't really matter.
@@HieuNguyen-sh6ur exactly, I don’t care that much if we win or lose, but seeing how good Shai Giddey and Dort can be is exciting for the future
keep making these videos. I like how he breaks the nba down with comparisons. I like the void too. Keep making great content
Such a great video! I love the way OKC is looking this year despite not being a big contender. I think next year and the year after are gonna be playoff locks.
I always look forward to these episodes and their accurate movie references. I hope they all have an explosive growth, especially on offence, I want to see the THUNDER.
Shai’s efficiency will rise back up as he gets into rhythm
New to the channel.... Wow the offset commentary is pottery. On point!!!
Great video. Love the reference to drumming.
This breakdown was so great. Every part of it
Top analysis. Great mix of analysis, music and basketball.
What a beautiful analogy with the drummers!
Wonderful analysis. I very much enjoyed this Ringers!
Very well made and edited video, great watch 👏🏽
Damn that drum analogy hit home lol!!
Musician chiming in here to give props on that analogy. Crushed it. That earned a sub.

The way you described the different playstyles was amazing

Yooooo. Thanks for the Thunder video. Bless J Kyle Mann.
I just watched the entirety of a video that was about the CURRENT OKC TEAM.
Great video.
Superb video my friend, you just earned yourself a subscriber
Okc just proved tonight why they should never be in the national spotlight
the sickest ball analysis video Ive seen for so long
Great pontificating. Honestly, it's almost hypnotic
My favorite ringer series 😭😍
Man, that's so on point, I always have the sense that shai plays in odd tempo, and then there's giddey. Like you said that any PG could be rock drummer or smooth RnB drummer, they all play in 4/4 or 3/4. Shai and Giddey play in 5/4 or 7/11.
Amazing work ! Bravo 🙌
great video. love the drummer analogies!
Great video very entertaining and well done
I love your drummer analogy so good!✅
Bro these videos are so good
Great Video!!! Kyle Mann with the quick maths 🤣
I think poku has a ton of time still. He has that spice potential in some ways and just 19. I hope people can stay patient with him.
I'm still a believer too, but he is almost cringeworthy sometimes. It doesn't seem to bother him hough, which is a good sign.
Poku has only had one real off season. I’d give him a couple more before we start seeing him flourish.
Timeline not fit honestly, whenever they picked another similar guy, he will be gone… u can see tre Mann is much better to fit in 6th man and there is giddy now which they don’t need another creator especially when poku is a defensive liability
@@kan3221 How tf does the timeline not fit? And what other similar player are they gonna find? Also, having one more guy that can create offense isn’t a bad thing, I don’t know why that’s a negative for you.
this is one of the best basketball videos ive watched in a while
J Kyle mann deserves a bigger platform. ringer ur droppin the ball
Yo this is some great content. I can't wait to watch some more Thunder games now.
beautifully written and delivered!
The relation to music was perfect 👌
I still think we need to go after bol bol. I think he fits the weirdo mold these team wants to go for.
J. Kyle has such a distinct voice and style - love all of the somewhat elusive pop culture references. You're an inspiration!
THIS IS PREMIUM CONTENT. You are to basketball videos as Ryan Reynolds to commercials. Geniuses.
beautiful video
Oh my god, with the dating references. Love these videos
As an okc fan it was hard to see them let go of Russ, Paul George, Harden and KD walk away that old finals roster got me to fall in love with them but as I watch how Presti is running the show in OKC he has done wonders with what he has been given. Shai and Giddey are good building blocks for a team that has a very young roster and they will get even better it would be a shame to see these two guys get broken up before OKC can find the right pieces to put together a better roster.
Great content!!!
Another banger by the one and only J. Kyle Mann!!
3:57 When he said off the bounce, the ball hit a player's head lol
Fantastic video as always!! I am very curious as to how Sam Presti will manage the 30+ picks he has, will he eventually trade a whole bunch for an established star once he feels the team is ready?
thats what it feels like, lets just hope once he gets a team that is ready he still has assets to trade
I think in his ideal world, he gets star level talent from the next 2 Thunder picks or the 24 Houston pick. Most of the rest of the picks will be traded for role players that OKC simply can’t attract in free agency.
Or he trades shai and giddey for picks so he got every First rounder in a draft class lol
This is how things usually work.
They just gonna create 2 new teams with those picks
man, so many great bits of flare here!
Giddey is the future!
i liked his gaming coming from australia and still do, but i don’t see it. i don’t think he’ll ever shoot efficiently enough to be a major factor. his shot needs to be overhauled. i hope im wrong tho. he is still a teenager after-all.
(edit)
maybe his shot doesn’t need an overhaul. his mechanics aren’t too bad, he just shoots a set shot which has its pros and cons.
@@MacLaw3084 im from australia and same city he's from, and I've seen him shoot. he's a great shooter, i mean they all seem like that before they join the NBA, but yea he's great at it, just needs some adjustments but he was known for many things, and shooting wasn't excluded , just wait it out
Facts
I cant help but think of Gibby from iCarly. He always said his own name like "Gibbaaaay".
Now I'm thinking of this with Giddeeeeey!
@@fr3tbuzz. sorry to be a downer but giddey is absolutely not a “great” shooter or even a good shooter, maybe in practice but im talking about games. im sure in the games you watched him play he made plenty of baskets. but he was not known for his shooting when drafted- decent at best. 40% fg, 29% 3pt, 69% ft (australia) is not great or even good for a pro. and those percentages are notably worse this year as a rookie (39% fg, 25% 3pt, 65% ft) which is to be expected. also, great shooters usually shoot freethrows at a high %. his mechanics arent terrible its just that he shoots a set shot. im not hating on him, i hope does he becomes a great shooter. he’s just not there yet. but its fun watching the aussies make the transition to the nba.
Can’t wait to see Chet w/ Shai & Giddey next year
and Wemby 🤞
The audio quality seemed off here, but another fantastic video
Excellent video by Mann, with some really interesting takeaways. Beyond the unique skillsets of Shai and Giddey I think some of the stats and choices Presti has made demonstrate a real philosophical pillar where he thinks the league is going and believing in more committee basketball. If the league is getting more talented especially shotmaking, the ability for multifarious shot creation might be the trump card. It seems a team resembling the 13 14 spurs are really kindred to his thinking.
And that overlaps with the stats laid out. Yes league leading off the catch 3s attempts is in part a byproduct of a roster without initiators but it also is one that supports a flowing hockey assist dependent identity. Those skills will be beneficial with possible stars from the lottery, but maybe they get good enough simply getting better shots and winning with five in due time. 5 Boris Diaw's just spitting the rock around is a very fun hypothetical.
Lastly I really like that distinction in playmaking. It's something I have been really fascinated in over the last couple of years which is the nuance of single action passers to as you say players able to create in between scoring entities. I do think the league is starting to see signs or the massive benefit of having the latter. Or at least that those two ways in assisting operate very differently.
Great video 👍🏼👍🏼
Enjoyed this video a lot .
oh yeah, Kyle posted, the day instantly got better!
What a phenomenal video

9:05. A very specific comparison there Kyle. Everything alright bud? Great vid as usual
Great video
Pt 2 we need it
love the thumbnail shoutout to the artists
The ringer’s content is great but that guy’s voice is just pure honey
Giddey passes with Nash-like brilliance. He even messes with his mane like pre-Lakers Nash.
This is a great video
We got to keep remembering that Giddey is only 19. He's SUPER green, in a team with max player point guard. He needs minutes. I think Presti just went for the best prospect he could see at that pick, regardless of team fit. OKC aren't trying to win it this year or the next. They can get Giddey to a decent level a trade him for a scorer. Teams are dying for playmakers like Giddey
100% he is playing well for a 19 year old rookie and the fact he even is getting recognized is big for him and okc.
If we had decent shooters, Giddey wouldve been averaging at leas 2+ asts
Giddy and Shai are the perfect duo wym💀
I think (as an OKC fan) our best move is to keep both. We need a Center who can stretch the floor and rebound (which JRE could be eventually, if he can make more inside shots), and a lights out shooter off the bench (which Tre Mann could be eventually, if his shot gets more consistent). Both these problems could have been fixed in this draft, well just have to see….
@@duffal0 You're going to have a very young core for a very long time (as long as presti keeps them damn picks), OKC should focus on the development of their young prospects such as Shai, Giddey, and Mann. Obviously trades are in the cards but if I were them I wouldn't trade anyone but Poku. You need to get Poku's trade value. Send him to Hawks, Pacers, Hornets, or any other small market team is both OKC and Poku's best bet for development.
I like how you don’t just shot clips that end in a goal that way you get the feeling as the ball flies through the air and your just hoping it goes up in
Do you have an updated version of this video? Would be an interesting contrast as these two are moving forward in their partnership, as have the Thunder.
Nice video!
