Dude, I was not prepared to hear Tjarks' voice. I haven't heard it since he passed away. Did not expect to tear up this early in the morning watching a J. Kyle Mann video! Great work as always!
Literally came here to say the exact same thing. I was so not ready to hear his voice, but as the tears well up, I am grateful to have ever heard such a special person to begin with. To this day, I still remember hearing his last pod on NBA University with J. Kyle Mann. Wow, thank you for that.
If it comes up again, I really wouldn't mind more of that. He was so smart and ahead on his picks, like Jaren Jackson maybe being better than Ayton. He was right about that and I think about it often
man I miss Tjarks. I listened to him on the pods just since lockdown started, and I hadn’t even been listening for that long when I heard the news. He had not only some of the best analysis but an amazing sense of humor and a really funny, distinct voice. RIP
as a french dude, i've watched a looot of US content around wemby and chet, and this one clearly stands out. Perfect nuancing of their statlines given their two teams, how they differently score and impact ball games, good takes on what they can evolve as players and a most importantly a deep appreciation of those two future/actual faces of league. great video thanks
Not exaggerating when I say this is the best sports content on the web right now. Salute to you Mr. Mann! The only creator that I routinely go out of my way to re-watch past videos of
I have a feeling seeing Chet Holmgren as a spurs fan is going to feel a lot like seeing dirk back in the 2000s. I’m gonna hate his guts… but respect his game… when he retires… lol
Chet is definitely amazing but he is almost 2 years older than Wemby. Also all Wemby's life changed during the draft , he has to adapt to a new team, new country, new culture, new basketball and he is doing more than all right. Wemby has a really good mental strength. We will have good years watching them playing against each other.
1. That unexpected guest gave me the chills. 2. I think Chet is awesome, but I'm confident this is going to be a Melo vs Bron kind of rivalry, meaning "not much, beyond their rookie season". Wemby is a goat tier talent. DPOY candidate already.
not only have I been *waiting* for this video, but it was still somehow even better than I could have imagined. truly thoughtful analysis in every moment crafted with a lot of care. thanks as always J Kyle Mann
I really hope Chet and Wemby own the league and become arch rivals for years to come. What a blessing it is for us to witness their simultaneous ascension.
Really appreciated the fairness and objectivity of this video. Most people will favor one or the other, but you did a great job of giving us objective analysis, and we can decide who we prefer or even more shocking…appreciate both.
People saying they’d take Chet right now if trying to compete haven’t been watching Wemby closely. He’s been giving fringe All-NBA production for just over a month now despite being in a terrible context.
@@PiriakaTrackwreckerBecause of the context of rookie of the year. Not to take anything away from Chet because he is definitely a special player, but Wemby is clearly just better. that's all there is to it.
@@shepardice3775 cool story. If it were possible I'd love dual winners. I'd prefer Wemby to win anyway, despite being a Thunder fan, just so we don't have people crying over his redshirt year.
5:46 This is the underrated piece of his game, as you said. It can be deceptive because of his fluidity and abruptness, this is the freakiest thing I've seen him do. He's moving like Steph curry off the ball, but with the goat catch radius. It's going to be over once he dials in the decisions and chemistry with his teammates.
Lovely to hear Tjarks, rip to a real one. I was gonna say, what a time to be alive but it seems a bit distasteful. But it truly is, and it's clear that John already saw it before all of us.
I love Wemby but I think the media coverage of him compared to Chet’s has been a bit biased due to Wemby’s game being more colorful lol. Fair enough, but what gets lost in all this is how GOOD Chet also is! I think this post does justice to both players without being too much bias 😂. Kind of basketball analysis and content I appreciate. I subscribed 😉
any team would love to have chet as a piece right now, he is the definition of an impact player and he is going to get better! i dont see him having his own team but surely he could be the second best player on a contender.
The crazy thing is, Wemby has more obvious room to grow, and more time to grow as well. He's spotting Chet a whopping twenty months and an entire year around an NBA team, and he's still basically tied with him in impact metrics. This is the difference between an All-NBA fixture and a perennial MVP candidate.
Every fan needs to be treating the basketball gods right because if these two have long, healthy careers we could legitimately be looking at the next great individual rivalry in league history. They both have the potential to be that good, and they clearly don’t like each other all that much. There are so many ifs, but what started as tongue-in-cheek hyperbole now feels possible: they could be the next Magic v Bird, the next Wilt v Russel.
Chet is going to be a really good player but I think Victor is going to be a top three player within 5 years if not sooner. If they had decent point guard play in San Antonio the dude would be averaging 25 as a rookie.🎉
@@benjaminlockhart8932 I'm partially disabled so I have to do everything speak to text but normally I go back and check to see if Google printed everything out correctly. I'm going to fix that but that is fucking embarrassing. 😂
Chet and Wemby have similar builds but their plays are vastly different. Chet is spreading the floor and hunting for mismatch. Vic is scratching and crawling in the paint to position himself and attack whoever it is in front of him.
Chet is somewhere in between Joel and KD: has Joel's post and mid range game, with KD's size and spacing from deep. Special, and somehow only the 2nd best rookie.
Good vid, but you can't count Wemby and Chet as being in the same draft class and say its one of the best ever just bc they're both rookies. Chet was literally drafted in 2022 lmao
Chet it so much further ahead and mature on floor than Wemby. I'm taking Chet if I want to win right now for the next 5 years, and Wemby if I want to build for the future.
Maybe you're right, but I can't help to imagine what Wemby would be doing if he was on that Thunder team instead of Chet -- and I can't in good conscious say that it wouldn't be drastically better then what Chet is doing I think the year off Chet took with NBA shooting coaches is really the only difference in the now vs rebuilt decision. I'm pretty confident that Wemby's shooting is going to take a huge leap in year two after a full year of NBA coaching -- which makes Wemby the clear better player
@letanefonotiiii4287 You don't have to imagine. Chet has significantly elevated the competitiveness of OKC this year. They are on track for ~ +17 win record over last season, which many believed was a year they over-achieved. Whereas, San Antonio are somehow even worse than they were last year, where they were already one of the worst teams in the league, despite the presence of Wemby. Chet impacts the floor simply by his gravity as a spacer, even without the ball in his hands, which in turn elevates the play of his team mates. Chet is the more complete player at this moment. Not everything is about numbers, but of course some numbers matter more than others. But Wemby, while still very raw, has more than demonstrated that the hype was real.
If they both stay healthy, we just might be lucky to have a decade long rivarly like Magic vs Bird. The last 10 years have been disgusting (with the exceptions of Jokic and Giannis winning, as well as Curry yet again without KD) and Lebronze and KD that made the superteam era are to be blamed.
Thinking it’s unusual for Wemby or Chet to move like this or they have “unhealthy” bodies is definitely some short people propaganda, speaking as a short person. The human body is not dumb. Gotta keep gods in check tho.
More skilled? Not up until this era have I seen this many teams with no real point guard and it’s very evident or big guys who can’t score on a 6ft mismatch or this many travels, carries, and flops.

Yeah Fr. The only problem is I don’t know if Chet will ever get to shine offensively playing with a future star and a mvp candidate
It's always a joy to hear this man talk hoops. Looking forward to the next one. RIP Tjarks
