If I was re-starting as an engineer, man the only outboard I’d need is API 2500, API 5500, and a UTA mpeq1 preamp. Done.

You can slam this thing really hard. Try 10:1 ratio, soft, loud, in old mode. Release to taste. Try that setting on anything to find out what it does on the 2500 - it’s really interesting.

Five 1176’s in this day n age is insane. As a modern day singer songwriter and producer. I have a rupert neve newton channel ( pre, comp, eq) 1u. And an api 2500+ on the mix buss. A great vocal mic ( soyuz 017 fet) and call it a day. Everything else can be finished in the box.

That api is a beast. Can also be just right on the mic. Try slamming it in parallel. Actually I’m surprised you don’t do more parallel compression with all the small faders and 16 record buss outs available.
I used to route the drums/instruments to a record buss for compression bringing it back on the small fader. Then both the dry and comp signals to a mix buss for one fader to control all drums. Another way is to split the signal at the patch bay.

The surprising thing with the 2500 is on gtr or mid range instruments I feel like it brings out harmonics in the mids very well. It’s super versatile sometimes can’t use standard settings and ratios it’s built differently. The design is slightly different
i really liked this compressor and if I had an unlimited budget, I would def pick this up for the racks!
I really want to try it on mix bus i haven't lately but so many guys especially in Nashville swear by it. Theres a great post on gearslutz by the designer of the unit who talks about the intricacies if anyones interested. Totally agree with you no api 2500 plugin comes close in real world applications.

It totally depends on what you are looking for this compressor to do. They are completely different sounding.
