  • What is the best mixer for live hardware based electronic music performances? Do I need preamps if I am only using synthesizers and drum machines? Can I use the WMD Performance Mixer with synths instead of eurorack modules? Do I need to have Eurorack modules to use the WMD Performance Mixer?
If you are asking yourself these questions, take a few minutes and check out this video!
The WMD Performance Mixer is an 8 channel Mixer for the Eurorack modular synthesizer format. It includes two auxiliary sends, a master insert section, six Mono channels and two true stereo channels. In addition to being the end all solution to mixing audio in the eurorack system, it works wonderfully with hardware instruments such as synthesizers and guitar pedals.
In this video Alex answers the question above and works through mixing four different hardware sound sources, the Roland TR-8 and JU-06, the Arturia Microbrute, as well as a vocal channel using two guitar effects pedals to create an interesting loop of sonic textures.
Alex also uses both auxiliary send and return channels with guitar pedals for external effects. The Zoom MS-70CDR and the WMD Geiger Counter help fill out the mix and make the sound more unique with some pretty traditional sound sources.
808s, 909s, Juno 106, Polysix, they all work awesome with the Performance Mixer.
The Performance Mixer is great for mixing both Eurorack and Non-Eurorack signals together so you can use what you have currently to make the music you love.

Awesome mixer. But what impressed me was the Haas Kicker on the ceiling. Most people don't actually try to tune their rooms with much more than a few impressive blocks of sculpted foam. And those that do use kickers don't know how they dynamically work. They use noise cancelation do to the physical nature of the size of the holes and the depth to the back wall of the kicker. The back wall of the kicker sends back a reflection that is 180 degrees out of phase to the original sound. When it hits the hole it's like feeding a 180 degree chunk of sound wave to the incoming sound source just at the hole and the size of the hole. So it pulls down soundwaves that pass thru the hole easily. I bring this up because it would be nice to have a side module that takes a mic's signal and allows you to feed it back on itself to perform sound cancelation do to an adjustable phase capability. You can take the ambient reflections out of your primary mics with an out of phase room mic with that feature. In other words you would have an electronic Haas Kicker. Just brain storming.

Thanks for trying and showing us! Couple questions. So you gotta use 1/4 to 1/8 converters for the instrument cables and pedal patch cables? Also, if using for a while, does the mixer get hot? Or do you think other modules may struggle with the power needed for the mixer? Thanks!

Hi there, yes just use 1/8 to 1/4" cables. Yes, the mixer does get hot as there are a ton of op amps and parts in general on it. As long as your power supply has enough current for all modules, you should be good!

I've been considering the WMD Performance mixer to replace my Roland MX-1. I'd like to expand the functionality and add more channels, I find it limiting... and not in the right sense. I'm planning on making a rack with the mixer, delay and reverb, distortion and compression all in the case. I love the PM DB25 for multitracking via snake outs.
Just nervous on pulling the trigger-it's a whole new world.

Hi. Antoher Question about the Aux Send/Return on the Performance Mixer. Is it possible to get a 100% Wet Signal when connecting a Pedal directly to the Mixer Aux Send/Return?

    • @WMDevices
      @WMDevices  4 роки тому +1

If your pedal has a 100% wet setting then yes.. just put theFfader down and switch the aux routing to PRE-FADER.

I have an Inellijel 7U Case with a Performance Mixer and want to use a Guitar Distortion Pedal. So I can go directly with Mini Jack too Jack Cables from the Pedal to the Aux Send and Return of the Performance Mixer? If this works I would not have to buy the Intellijel 1U Pedal Tile :-)

Just try it. I do it lots, but some pedals work better than other do to their headroom. Start with the Aux all the way down and then put signal into the pedal little by little until you find a nice balance where the pedal is not clipping in a bad way. In my experience, I hardly ever send full volume from the auxes which means you've got attenuation already. Use the pedal's master volume to adjust the level of the return. If you need more gain, then you can return to a Mono channel in the mixer instead of the return to boost it. I have not had to do that, but it's there if you need it.
I like to mix where my master level is at zero or just above at +6 or so. This also helps as if you are mixing hot and taking up the full headroom of the mixer, then it will be hard for external sources or pedals to compete.

It's seems ok for dance music but what about ambiant/drone music ? where sounds got to appear and disappear smoothly. Could you show that please ? I read the specificaton and it says that the volume slider start at -30db before that it's just OFF . its make me doubt of this mixer . I dream to buy one of these but I don't have the possibility to test it in that particular way.

Hi there. The -30db to off was a design feature that we quickly changed to have a much smoother curve to off. It was something that we did not notice as an issue and the first 50 or so units went out with that. We then put out a notice out to everyone who bought a mixer and got most, if not all units back to receive a mod on our dime. All new units have a smooth fade to off as a part of the design. It is much better and totally usable in ambient and drone style patches.

@@WMDevices great answer. Note from 2 years later, I LOVE my Performance Mixer for both Dance AND Ambient music, I make about 50/50 of each. It's still a - nah, it's THE - superb Eurorack mixer. About to try running into some pedals tonight. FWIW I have plenty of options for good outboard mixers, but I still love having the PM in my rack. It's 10x more immediate and connected-feeling to my modular system and it truly is a fully-featured mixer in Eurorack format. Love it - an absolute jewel of my collection
