You said it---Contentment is the key. To learn to be happy and feel that it is enough is the key to real joy. Anything else is extra and we usually get to have a little bit of that. Thank God for all we have and may He especially bless all those in true need.

Our family tends to come open house style so I make a big pot of chili and a big pot of chicken and noodles with some cornbread muffins and rolls. These stay warm in crockpots and people can serve themselves as they come. We ask people to bring Christmas goodies to share. This year we’re expecting about 28 people counting us. The grandkids get presents and everyone else just enjoys the time together. Merry Christmas to you both, and to Dixie, too.

Emmy, both the casserole and the rolls and sausage look really good! I am the only breakfast eater at my house so I will probably have oatmeal with blueberries on Christmas morning. Dinner this year is ham, scalloped potatoes, corn casserole, seven layer salad, rolls and a cookie tray dessert. I thought of you all a bit ago. I went to Hy-Vee to pick up some lost leader items they were advertising, Hormel black label bacon for 1.99 (limit 3), canned beans and corn ($.39), limit 12, powder sugar and brown sugar for 1.99 for 2 pound bags. While I was there they came over the loudspeaker and said they were overflowing with Honeysuckle turkeys and until 7 pm tonight, they were selling them for $.59/lb. I said to myself, what would Paul and Emmy do? Yup, I marched right over there and picked me out a 12 pound turkey to put in my freezer for only $7.08. It will taste good about the middle of January in a traditional turkey dinner and then turkey soups and casseroles after that! I'll make turkey broth with the carcass and get my money's worth out of that bird. Wish my freezer wasn't so full or I would have bought 2!

Emmy and Paul…..We used to get caught up in the consumerism, but as we got older, and now especially after I was a caregiver for a few years for my late husband, I became much more grateful and content with the simpler life…..it’s much more satisfying and meaningful to be content now. God Bless you both and your extended family!!

Emmie, never apologized for buying store bought items to use. Remember you are showing us how to create a recipe that is simple and there are plenty of us who appreciate that we don’t need to make homemade rolls etc. this time of year it’s helpful to have simple go to recipes with items we have access to or have on hand. Merry Christmas 🎄

Table looked so pretty and the food amazing! We have kids and grands over for brunch Christmas morning with scrambled eggs, grits and homemade cinnamon rolls plus whatever they bring. So blessed. They go home about 2 and we just eat leftovers for dinner so we don't have to worry about a huge meal and clean up. It's relaxing. Thanks for all the work you put into this channel, it shows in your face how much thought you put in to each video. Christmas blessings to you!

I will still be baking our traditional ham as the main meal but something new I am trying this year is a mashed potato bar which is a new to me idea where you simply keep a Crock-Pot filled with creamy mashed potatoes and then you set out different toppings so you can create the kind of potato flavors you want, side bowls of shredded cheese or sour cream or diced green onions and crumbled bacon and also the normal turkey gravy pork gravy or even country gravy to pour on top. I think this will satisfy a lot more people's taste buds.

QOD: Christmas day will just be me and my mom. I will be baking a cherry breakfast yeast bread (prepackaged and frozen), which I purchased from my great niece's school fundraiser for choir. We will enjoy this with a cup of coffee while prepping the ingredients for our main meal: Pineapple and brown sugar glazed spiral ham, which I will be cooking in the crockpot, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, crusty bread to dip in herbed olive oil (I do make this), and strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert (also premade and frozen). We are keeping it simple this year. Neither one of us wants to be slaving away in the kitchen. Mom is 82 and I want to enjoy every minute I can with her.

Just the two of us, so instead of buying a whole ham, I am making ham slices (the thick ones sold separately at the grocery store), mashed potatoes with cream gravy, candied yams, Southern green beans, pear salad, pea salad and either biscuits or rolls. Pumpkin pie for dessert. What about you, Emmy?

I find that at the holidays, you can get the whole ham for less than a ham steak. Then you can do something else with the rest. I like to have chopped ham or ham slices in the freezer. I also use the bone to make broth to make split pea and ham soup. Such a nice rich flavor that way. Merry Christmas everyone

I make a seafood bisque, baked stuffed shrimp, and clams casino (yes, we do bacon on top, even though it's supposed to be meatless!). We revel in the company more than the chaos, now. Merry Christmas, Emmy and Paul.

Oh those recipes look good! My two sons decided to buy a huge prime rib from a local producer this year. We usually have prime rib, but I get grocery store stuff, so this is quite a treat. The rest of the meal will be on me. I’m making sea scallops, twice baked potatoes, and a veggie of some sort. I will probably just do cheesecake for dessert, plus I have a frozen chocolate pie in the freezer that I bought for $1 last month. This meal will be Christmas Eve. My dd will have a Christmas brunch the next day. She’s vegan, and the rest of us aren’t lol. I admit, some of her vegan stuff is ok, but some isn’t, so I will bring something meat based to add to her spread. Who knows-maybe I will use one of your recipes. Last year I took biscuits and gravy but my oldest dd is taking that, so I need a different plan.

We have been gifted three hams. It’s just the two of us. We are going to have them sliced and then use our food saver to put them into servings for us to eat throughout the year. Our local dollar tree had four different winter/Christmas pattern plates. I bought two of each except the black and white Buffalo plaid because I can use those throughout the year for different seasons, just switching the color of the napkins, etc. We eat Keto but I’ve already figured the swaps I can make to your breakfast casserole to make it keto friendly. My table also has a mirrored tray surrounded by pine cones and berries and a kerosene lantern in the middle. It is my favorite decoration in my house. Thank you for all of your frugal ideas!

I make a double recipe of overnight French toast for Christmas morning every year. I bake bacon in the oven the night before and just heat it in the microwave or oven with the French toast while it bakes. For supper, we go to my brother and sister in law’s house and I take Italian roast beef and strawberry pretzel jello salad.
    Italian roast beef:
2-3 lb chuck roast, trim the fat and brown it in a skillet.
I can Italian seasoned diced tomatoes (garlic, onion, oregano)
A heaping tablespoon of Italian seasoning
    I/4 cup good ketchup
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon onion powder
Place the browned roast in a crockpot. Sprinkle the onion and garlic powder on the roast. Dump the diced tomatoes overtop of it. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning over the top. Cook on low in the crockpot for 8 hours (overnight). Remove the roast from the crockpot and shred it, discarding any pieces of fat. Place the shredded beef back in the crockpot with the tomatoes/liquid and squirt in approx 1/4 c of ketchup. I LOVE HEINZ KETCHUP!! Mix well and serve on good buns.

Our work Christmas party we are having a pasta and salad cook off, each person brings in either a pasta dish or salad and we have a big pot luck. Everyone brings in containers and we share the leftovers so we can all bring some home- no waste. Plus we have our gift exchange too and everything has to come from a second hand store or from your home, so you have to get creative.

My mother….I never asked her why….always had picnic foods at Christmas….so, after she passed, I carried on her tradition….potato and macaroni salads, baked beans, BBQ ribs and so on….of course, lots of snacks, Christmas cookies, pies and goodies….great pic of you guys and Dixie decked out in ribbon…..Merry Christmas to all and may God bless!

I may just have to try those cinnamon roll wrapped sausages for Christmas breakfast. We are having a simple breakfast snack (we rarely eat breakfast) of coffee and kolachi, but the sausage/cinnamon rolls would be a nice offering too.
Wellll, our Christmas dinner is and isn't frugal this year: We usually have turkey and the trimmings (fewer than on Thanksgiving because I've usually been up half the night playing Santa's helper...)--but this year we wanted something very different. So, my Mom is buying steaks and I'll prepare them for us...and we will provide the rest of the meal...roasted potatoes, cranberry sauce (homemade), a lettuce wedge each, mac n cheese (we have one picky eater), garlic bread, roasted beets with balsamic vinegar and blue cheese, and fruit salad. Much of the meal will come from what we've bought ahead or grown and stored. The steak is a splurge, but we're blessed to have my Mom offer to provide them. She is 80 and has serious mobility issues, so I always make all of the food.
On Christmas Eve, we'll have finger foods, punch, wassail, etc. and enjoy each other's company. I'm learning to find a new normal after having our family dwindle in number due to my Dad's passing, moves, and marriages/moving.
    Merry Christmas!!

I’m Norwegian and we always eat traditional Norwegian food for Christmas. We have the family dinner 24th of December. We eat «ribbe» pork ribs, saucages, large meat balls, potatoes, sour cabbage (similar to the german one) and cream with cloudberries for dessert.

Looks good. Enjoy your channel. Have to cook low sodium because of husband's heart. We are being different this year. My daughter & 2 teenaged grandsons live with us but they are going to be with their dad on Christmas after Church. Christmas Eve we 5 are going to have pork carnitas with tortillas & probably tamales that I'll make this coming week. Chocolate pie for dessert. I got the pork butter roast for 0.99 cents a pound just after Thanksgiving. We usually have turkey & the fixins.

THank you Emmy & Paul!! I am bringing a big tray of cinnamon buns to our Christmas Eve brunch * hopefully. Our dryer died last Monday and the oven died on Tuesday of last week- at the worst possible time!! So I say hopefully that the new one arrives on time- I usually make a French Toast casserole and a savory casserole for Christmas breakfast- I make them the night before and this allows me to be with my family while they cook rather than watching from afar~~ Merry Christmas xo

So for christmas this year we are keepin it traditional and frugal. So: polish pierogi with mushrooms (dried forest + some with cabbage). Really frugal meal if you're make it from scratch or even go to forest to get mashrooms yourself :) And for a dessert vegan cheesecake made of tofu (which is now 5 times cheaper than a traditional one.. and tastes even better! And gingerbread made our of canned tomatoes. I know, it sounds crazy but it's the best gingercake I ever had. And healthier. And cheaper. Highly recommend.

The dishes looked delicious! We always eat the pre packaged cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning! haha I loved your vintage table. Just beautiful. Back in the day I had a formal dining room and set the china and polished silver and made it beautiful. I don't regret it because it brought much joy to my mother and mother-in law. But now that I'm a granny I keep it very simple and have more time to enjoy. We celebrated solstice on Sunday so my daughters can have time with their in-laws this year. We had roast beef, Christmas potatoes and the fixings. I introduced my grandsons ( aged 2, 4 and 5) to the joy of Christmas crackers and homemade candied popcorn. They loved both and so now it's a tradition for Christmas at Granny's house. haha Wishing you and Paul a wonderful Christmas with your family and loved ones! :)

Your table looks lovely and full of Christmas cheer! I am serving (store bought) tamales on Christmas Eve, which is a Southwest tradition. I haven't decided on what to make on Christmas Day. I may make pork tenderloin or a ham, and roasted potatoes and vegetables. I have made lasagna for Christmas in past years, but I just made that a couple of weeks ago, so I will probably do something else. I don't think there is a right or wrong thing to serve on Christmas. An old co-worker used to get the big, party size Stouffer's entrees to serve, so they could focus on the holiday. Thanks again for the ideas!

We are doing a standing rib roast, homemade bread or rolls (can't decide yet), potatoes au gratin, turnip au gratin, roasted Brussels sprouts with a spicy balsamic drizzle, a salad(not sure what kind yet), a cheesecake bar(homemade caramel, chocolate, strawberry and cherry sauces for each person to add whatever they want), blue cheese garlic butter for the rib roast, a hot chocolate bar(probably bought hot chocolate but with marshmallows, crushed peppermint, etc), and a cheese ball. (The Jimmy Carter cheese ring recipe). And to be clear, I am doing this with things I buy cheaply as possible. The rib roast, I went ahead and bought on sale and wrapped and froze it.

This past Christmas we didn't have any 'meals'. Mom (that's me) was tired and I knew that I wouldn't feel like making a big meal. My aunt and my sister came over. We had cheese and crackers, vegetables and dip, buffalo chicken wing dip and taco dip. And, of course I had a tray of Christmas cookies and some Christmas candies that I had made to add to it. There was something everyone liked and everyone was happy to have a snack day. Like you had said in another one of your videos about entertaining. I didn't have a lot of money or time or energy so I kept it simple and didn't have to be in the kitchen while we had company. And, my sister was supposed to bring paper plates and napkins but forgot to get them (just like you said, don't count on others because things happen). Fortunately I had some in my stash that I have had for years and we used those although not Christmas ones. Thanks for the fun videos. I'm enjoying trying to catch up with them. I'm a fairly new viewer. Love you and Paul. You're a lot of fun and share great ideas!

We celebrate the day after Christmas and we are starting a new tradition by having tacos in different ways, both soft and hard shells as well as beef and chicken fillings and all the trimmings. Looking forward to a more relaxed meal with the family without all the cooking. The one thing I will be making is cinnamon apples also.
