I always keep flour in the freezer. The weevils can already be in there, they don't have to get in there later. You don't need to thaw it out - it does not clump in the freezer.
Prepping is always a smart idea. My husband and I did more back during the covid pandemic than we do now. With the price of groceries it's making it a little bit harder to keep ahead but I don't ever let my pantry get empty. We have a food sealer machine too and I really love it it will especially keep your meats fresher a lot longer. I keep a lot of my dried beans and things like that and the old glass jars with the screw on lids.
Great tips! I love my Food Saver and use it to vacuum seal nearly everything (not just food). When storing beans, rice, pasta, flour, etc, I snip a *very small hole in top of the bag, making sure that the product shows. Then I put it into a FS bag and vacuum seal. This way, you are vacuum sealing the bag of whatever, killing any creepy crawlers in there. Don't vacuum seal sugar or salt or they will turn into bricks. I just use the "seal" function.
For those of us who can no longer garden or preserve food by canning, this is very useful. I do stock my pantry with canned goods and will now store cornmeal, flour and other baking essentials in the freezer zippered plastic bags. Pancake and cake mixes too. 😋😋 Thanks Calvin.
Good evening Calvin and Marie. Enjoyed watching this video. Great storage ideas. I store my beans, rice, cornmeal, flour, oats, grits and dry goods in our deep freezer or our 2nd fridge if we're going to use them soon. Yes, cook the pinto beans. I also use food sealer. I wanted to get some food grade buckets with the screw on lids also. I absolutely believe in prepping for the future. Have a Blessed week. 😊
Hey guys that clock water tower is in my home town were I still live it’s so awesome to see my neighbors in the the same mindset as us Thanks so much 😀Eric!!
I put notes in buckets or write notes on the mylar bags. Some words of encouragement or sometimes a little funny joke. I draw flowers and things on them, too. I call my preps my legacy if I'm not here. If someone finds the food I pray it will help them.. I'm happy to see you give folks tips and help them along on their prepping journey.
You and Marie did a great job prepping. A great way to keep your mason jars from breaking is to keep the jars in the same cardboard box they came in. Take care, be safe, God bless!
More tips for mason jars: 1. if your jars are 1/2-gallon size & you want to keep in original carboard box, but there is no divider inside (usually the case), save your saltine cracker boxes & cut off ends. Saltine box will easily slide on 1/2-gallon jar and still fit inside cardboard box. 2. if you have jars on a shelf without original cardboard box, then save old socks you no longer use (like they might have holes), cut calf/shin part into bands. Slip sock-bands around middle of your jars. This will keep jars from tinging against each other. This works much better than using rubber-bands. 3. if you have a Food-Saver attachment for mason jars, save your new canning lids for canning (they are expensive now!), but use old lids that are in fair condition (great way to re-purpose those used lids). 4. if you don't have 1/2-gallon mason jar, you can still use those 80oz extra-large jars from store-bought pickles (I just use these to store my extra sugar/flour/etc.). Glass jar is easy to clean, but the metal lid will take about 2 weeks to "air out" get rid of residual pickle smell. Other tips: 1. Food Saver bags are expensive, so you want to be able to re-use/re-purpose any that weren't used for meat. If you want to prep flour, be sure to keep in its original bag. Or you can use those brown paper lunch bags from bygone days, just measure out your flour according to your typical recipe (like 3 - 4 cups), put in a double-bag, tape down, then place into your Food-Saver bag, and vacuum/seal. These paper bags are also helpful if you have "sharp" items like elbow macaroni/rice that might create micro-holes in your Food-Saver bags. 2. Saltine cracker boxes are also excellent to prevent your typical bread loaves from getting squashed on the way home from grocers, just cut off ends to form a square "cylinder". I will also put extra loaves in freezer this way because they stack nicely & won't slide around. If you are buying 2 packages of English muffins they will fit nicely in 1 saltine sleeve. 3. Empty tissue boxes are great for saving those plastic bags from grocery store. 4. Save used bread wrappers (like Wonder/Mrs. Baird/etc., not the cellophane wrappers) to double-wrap extra bread loaves for freezer. I do the same with Mission tortilla wrappers; 1st I divide number of tortillas (usually 7 - 10 since I'm single), 2nd wrap tortillas in aluminum foil (this keeps them from drying out in freezer), #3 place in Mission wrapper & twist-tie close. There are so many uses for bread wrappers!
Thanks Calvin. Your info is always useful. I can’t buy a bunch but I do buy in bigger pkgs and break it down. I use 1/2 gal. mason jars to store rice and oatmeal and the likes. It’s a little cheaper. Hope you n Marie are having a good start to your week. Have a Blessed evening!🌻✨
@@SouthernCountryLiving I'm shocked about that disintegrated mylar bag with rice! Personally, I would throw it away ASAP because there might be some kind of spore, wouldn't want to chance getting a lung infection or something else. Looking forward to pinto bean video. Love from Houston, Texas!

Calvin, you are doing a great job by sharing yours and Marie’s prepping system and not just looking out for yourself and maybe your family, but thinking about whomever might come across the food should something happen to you and Marie, God forbid. You are both truly good, godly and salt of the earth people. Thank you for sharing your info and time with us. ❤️🙏🏻
Hello from KY love you and your channel and your family ❤️.Calvin I loved this video. That was very interesting.Who would think that package of rice would go bad.And it eating that aluminum off the bag.😬
Thank you for this video Calvin. I never thought of putting a variety of items in a 5-gal bucket, but I love that idea! As a single person, it makes more sense for me to do something like that instead of say a 5-lb bucket of just beans. I would love to see you cook those beans. Do you think it would be best to cook them in a crockpot? Also, would you be able to use a recipe for them where you use other prepping food too, like a ‘completely from the pantry’ type meal?
Yes i would love this and all the information you have given me so excited I just started prepping 4 months ago and I've got about 2 years worth I think but you have excited me because we are senior citizens we are on a budget and I'm so excited to see what y'all have done and I can't wait I want to get some 5-gallon buckets now I am dying to get 5 gallon buckets❤❤❤
Really enjoy learning from both of you. Would really like to see video of Calvin removing air from zip lock bags. Myself I have difficulty at times. Thank you for sharing!
Hi there Calvin! Love to watch your prepping videos and I sure do appreciate you showing us how you do it! I would love to see you cook some 11 year old beans! Wow!! The fact that the only thing that was bad was 1 bag of rice! That had to be a fluke. Maybe a tiny bit of air or something got in. It's still amazing! Hi Calvin! Thank you for this video. a few years back I had a 2lb. bag of pinto beans that I had had for several years. I cooked them for hours on end, and they wouldn't get soft. I looked it up on the internet and it said to add alittle baking soda to them. It worked. they got soft.
Thank you for sharing. We do things similarly. It helps me to see others in our generation doing the same things. We do a mix of storage for our preps as well. Yes. Please cook up those pinto beans.
Thank you for sharing how you store your food in the bucket. I love the note in the bucket. I am going to use freezer bags like you showed. I put bay leaves in my bucket to help keep bugs and mice away.

Hi Calvin! Thank you for this video. a few years back I had a 2lb. bag of pinto beans that I had had for several years. I cooked them for hours on end, and they wouldn't get soft. I looked it up on the internet and it said to add alittle baking soda to them. It worked. they got soft.
Sounds great! Thanks very much
Thank you for sharing. We do things similarly. It helps me to see others in our generation doing the same things. We do a mix of storage for our preps as well.

Thank you for sharing how you store your food in the bucket. I love the note in the bucket. I am going to use freezer bags like you showed. I put bay leaves in my bucket to help keep bugs and mice away.
Great idea!
